It would have been nice if you had mentioned the Royal Navy tradition where a submarine returning to port after a victory always flies a Jolly Roger made on board. They did this from the First World War right through to the Falklands War.
My country's flag is actually technically a pirate flag! Just search history of Bahrain ,they used to be pirates (technically) and colonised the country late 1700s .
The skull on the left side of the flag at 2:30 reminds me of Sam O’Nellas illustrations.

Those horrible pirates had always spoken in ways that were unorthodox.
There's actually one real pirate flag, in the maritime museum of Åland.
It's like all pirate history preserved didn't talk about the massive number of pirates that DIDN'T announce to everyone around them that they are pirates and instead posed as normal trader ships.
Most did that and then raised it at the last second for intimidation

From my knowledge, there was one kept and later destroyed by order of the king. I believe it was Walter Kennedy's flag.

Of course there are historical pirate flags remaining today. Pirates on a budget used a sky-blue background displaying a silver white star in the middle. Pirates with plenty of booty had a blue background with a white saltire which on itself has a white and red crosses overlaping. A "Union Jack" is what most flag expert call it

There are 2 original Jolly Roger flags around today. I know one of them is in st Augustine Florida at the pirate and treasure museum. I went to the my once and it was great

British navy Submarines often have their own Jolly Rogers wich they fly when returning from a mission often displaying symbols that represent ships they sunk during that mission along with the skull and sometimes crossbones
So, the video is more about the lack of a real piece of cloth that pirates used than details about said pirates use.
There ARE 3 known pirate flags that are preserved.
2 are skull and crossbones Jolly Rogers that are in museums, one is a RED Skull and Cross Bones, but from the 1800s, long after the golden age.

Skull and bones flag actually meant disaster or an epidemy aboard the ship and thus was used to lure merchants into a trap.

They sometimes used a British or Spanish flag for example to trick other ships into believing that they were trading tea for example.

Flying false colors is such a long-standing naval tradition not just among pirates this is why it is still considered permissible to this day for belligerent vessels to fly false colours as a ruse of war. Though the false colours are supposed to be lowered and the true colours raised prior to engagement in combat.

Why would they fly a 'No Quarter' flag? If the ship they are attacking knows that no prisoners will be taken, they have nothing to lose if they fight to the death.
More likely, the pirates would have signalled that 'quarter' would be given, if the other ship just surrenders and hands over its cargo.
Much simpler, quicker and less dangerous for all involved.
Of course, they may have disliked the other ship so much that they really didn't want anyone to survive - but they still would not have signalled that in advance!
They could have used no quarters when meet with army ships they don't actually want to fight with.
The "no quarter" flag was there to make merchant ships even more scared and surrender their cargo out of fear.
It meant the ship will kill everyone if they fought
Has it ever has there ever been a contest for a national flag if so what were some of the proposals or ideas
New Zealand recently ran such a contest; I don't think they have taken any action to change their flag yet.
