    Walking the plank was indeed a real thing. They didn't fasten a plank to the side just for that punishment. The plank was there to get off the ship when it was docked. The threat wasn't the plank itself, but rather the lack of a port to step onto.

Now, some years ago the crew of of a nasa mission shut down their radios and gave the middle finger to houston's schedule for like a day or so. Nice choice of pastel colours so that the annotations stand out, split into thirds for visual clarity, and the colour choices make it look like a national flag which really ties it all together, not to mention you clearly paid attention to formatting and text placement.

    A gangplank is needed for embarking and debarking. If you plan to dock places that wouldn't welcome you, then you should probably bring your own. It doesn't need to be attached, just weighted enough on one end that someone could stand on the other. If that someone doesn't want to finish their walk, you just need to let the weight up enough they can slide.
    Adventurers were just people who traveled distances, and if their travels weren't financed like the most famous ones, they earned with their weapons. When they couldn't contract out their swords, they put them to their own business, including banditry.

      in the days of pirates, it'd've been pronunced differently, therefore the joke, at least in the time, would't exist. Seaman(n) would be roughly pronunced like s-ae-a-m-a-n and the word semen like s-e-m-e-n, with open wovels, making the connection virtually impossible. Also... Look at the Dutch and their zeeman or Germans and their seemann.

    In 300 years kids will run around with toy Kalashnikovs, with ragged clothing and saying "look at me, i'm the captain now" instead of using cutlasses and eyepatches.
    Or if they are american they'll just borrow their dad's actual kalashnikov and make the "trick" portion of "trick or treat" much louder and dangerous.

    important to note, is that what was important for the pirates success was ports- those in power(Who could be bribed) let the pirates dock and spend time in the ports, selling all their plunder. Near the end of the golden age, new less bribe-able people were in power, and they cracked down on the ports making piracy a much less viable option.

    I was always told "walking the plank" wasnt a excecution, more like a punishing trial. If you managed to keep balance on the end of the plank on the sea you could come back on the ship. Same as the thing where they pull them under the ship and as long as they didnt drown they could get back on the ship.

    • @Jan_Koopman
      @Jan_Koopman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The last one you mention is called kielhalen and it was definitely lethal every time: the time you spent under water would cause you to drown and even if it didn't, the baricles at the bottom of the ship would injure you enough to be lethal.

    • @chrisp.2852
      @chrisp.2852 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Jan_Koopman kielhalen is the dutch word, the English one is keelhauling.
      It's definitely not lethal every time, it would greatly depend on the size of the ship and if you were being roped the length of the ship or from side to side. If drawn to slow you could drown and drawn to quick you would be cut more by the barnacles (causing more pain, scars and possibly infect) but are most definitely survivable, specially on smaller ships.

    i mean, a lot of very bad people and actions go down in history as "cool". after all, we all love a good, chivalrous knight, the story of a rough and tumble mercenary band, or a noble ninja sneaking through the shadows. the part we quietly sweep under the rug is that all three are armed soldiers, murderers and thieves, and the ninja were specifically assassins for hire who killed a lot of people who didn't deserve it.

    • @artsy_artist1323
      @artsy_artist1323 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      From what I’ve read, it was one of the worst punishments since it was as much a form of psychological torture as it was physical. So they didn’t bother to go to an island to maroon someone unless it was super serious (I may be wrong tho)

    • @AidenRKrone
      @AidenRKrone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Take what I say with a grain of salt because I'm not knowledgeable in pirate history, but they probably just dumped the offending sailor on the nearest island they came across. They didn't go looking specifically for an island to maroon the sailor on. Until they found a suitable island, the sailor was kept in a makeshift brig.

    • @10gamer64

      Actually, in The Netherlands, there is a political party called "De Piraten Partij" (The Pirates' Party), which strives - among other things - for the legalization of burning dvds/cds/etc. (piracy), so piraxy acrually is (or at least has) a party
