This is a very popular misconception, even Russian newspapers of the time got the idea of this flag wrong (as seen in the picture, it's written "new Russian national flag" there).
It wasn't a national flag, it was just a nice sympol to be used by citizens. It has never replaced other flags and wasn't officially adopted as a civil/state/national flag. Modern tricolor was official in that time

Our Finnish flag is based on the Russian blue-white naval flag. First representative flags used by Finnish yacht clubs and sea traders used the same symbolism to show loyalty to the Tsar's military while doing foreign sea trade or participating in international boat races. After gaining independence, we used a red flag with a lion coat of arms in the centre, but after the bloody civil war between pro-western whites (ironically lead by tsarist loyalists like Mannerheim) and the pro-Soviet reds, the red flag was scrapped, and the flag that represented antagonism against the communist Russia was chosen due to it's history of use and Christian meaning in addition to national romantic explanations of the white being snow, blue lake water etc.

The 1991 Russia flag wasn't actually a light blue, it's just a misinterpretation of the government explanation of the new flag. The "changing" of the shade was actually just a clarification of the shade of blue that they originally meant
But in fact, the color of the flag was different until 1993. For example, in the Resolution of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR dated August 22, 1991 No. 1627/I-I, it was stated that the color of the flag is white-light blue-scarlet.
In addition, the flag that was hung over the Kremlin after the collapse of the USSR can now be viewed at the Yeltsin Center in Yekaterinburg. You can see there that the colors are different from those now.
I don't think it was just a misinterpretation
He definitely had the light blue stripe from 1991-1993. It was replaced later. Just go to the wiki article about the Russian flag, change to Russian lang and you will see two different flags next to each other.
@@zuluoscarlima7822Wikipedia is created by people, so the mere presence of two images there doesn't prove anything. If we refer to videos from those years, we can observe that at one time, flags with both light and dark stripes were used simultaneously. Interestingly, this is still the case today. Sometimes, even at official events, flags with light stripes are used, but this doesn't carry any additional meaning.

Another funny coincidence: both confederateand Novorussia flags are used by patriotic nationalists in both counties. Russian liberals can't stand Novorussia flag just as American liberals cannot stand the confederate flag.
And they can't stand them for good reasons, too. One is used by nationalists who don't see human beings as people and the other is a Confederate flag. :p
The Black-Yellow-White flag is not used by anyone except some kinds of nationalists or monarchists who wants to bring the empire back
As a graphic designer I absoluely love your videos and explanations.

The light blue in the flag of Russia in 1991 was used as the flag of the democratic forces, namely Boris Yeltsin. indeed, this color is from the Soviet-Russian-republic.
The dark blue flag finally became the state flag along with the new anthem of 2000 under Vladimir Putin . The official interpretation of dark blue is computer color. (however, dark blue has been used as the flag of the President of the Russian Federation since 1993)

Thanks for video. As Russian, I learned some new things about our flag. And yeh, tsar's flag still in use, but only for some nationalists or some history things, like 3 flags near Lakhta Center in Saint Petersburg, (how I know) representing that Russian history is united and unique
In Russia, the ribbon of the Order of St. George, with three black and two orange stripes, denotes that he was executed three times and resurrected twice. Soldiers often use it to denote friend or foe.
At St. Petersburg there is now (1+ year already) where all 3 huge flags are at the same time:)
I'm suprised you didn't take this opportunity to talk about how the Soviet union's flag had a different obverse and reverse
A similar design was used by Novorossiya as the War Flag

The 1914 flag looks like one of the more cooler flags they had.
Fun fact about the Soviet flags, the Emblem of the Latvian SSR had depicted the sun rising from the Baltic sea, but due to the geography of Latvia it's impossible, as the sun can only be seen over the sea during sunset.
You did a great job about explaining our flag. Some people (not even from Russia) now know some more about our culture and flag.
And about "царь (tsar)": you have a really good pronunciation. I'm using Busuu, and people there (not only beginners) having really bad pronunciation of that word time to time.

I noticed the switch, I was thinking, wait, isn't chad's flag the darker one? Maybe I remembered wrong; and then you confirmed that i was not going crazy
Same
love the shirt Tapakapa!
thank you for finally making this video and clearing this up
Did I miss where you actually show the Confederate Flag? That seems like a large omission. Also, the "National Flag" of the CSA is not what you are thinking about. The original National Flag has a blue field in the upper left with seven white stars in a circle and then three bars (red/white/red) for the rest of the flag (the "Stars and Bars"). What you are probably thinking about (and never show) is the Confederate Battle Flag which has the blue cross (called the "Southern Cross") with 13 stars (for the 11 states in the CSA plus two states, Missouri and Kentucky which they hoped would join) on a field of Red. This was later adapted for use on the second National Flag which had the Southern Cross in the upper left and the rest of the flag white (not a great choice). They later added a red bar at the far end of the field of white.
What's with the different logo? Did @CGPGrey finally trademark stick figures?
After monetising the comments section, anything is possible
Great video as always. No idea how you're able to pack in so much information in a relatively short video
No, no, you don't get it. Every Russian person knows that red means beautiful, blue means fresh, and white means elegant.

The Russian Jack having the same symbolism of the British Jack but with the colours reversed kinda makes Russia and Britain like Mario and Wario
Well, by the way, if Britain is Wario, everything fits. Britain attacked and conquered literally half the planet and gave all these lands as colonies, that is, they pumped out resources from there and exploited the natives without giving most of them equal civil rights.

Yes, kinda resembles Novorossya
The colors of the flag are characteristic of most Slavs, and Black and Yellow are the colors of the Romanov dynasty. Red, blue and white are the colors of the Slavs, black and yellow are the colors of the dynasty. Red, blue and white were used in the navy, including the merchant fleet, as a designation of nationality, and black and yellow as denoting the power of the Romanov dynasty.
And the flag of the Soviet Union is also used and is called the “Victory Banner”; it hangs on some government buildings and military
Late to the party but that’s factually incorrect. The Victory Banner is a banner of a 150th rifle order, not the flag of Soviet Union.
@@ProtossOP Originally it was just a Soviet flag with white instead of gold. The writing on it was added by the soldiers afterwards.
However, the Banner as it is now is indeed recognized as officially being equal to the Russian state flag _during Victory Day_
Wasn't it Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich himself who decided to use white, blue and red colors? The Dutch merchant Jan van Sweden asked the Russian government what these flags should be, since "... all the colors of those kindyaks as the great sovereign will indicate; only on ships there is a ship of which state, there is also a banner of that state" and after that the tsar requested a cloth of red, azure and white for the ship's naval flag "Oryol"?
Btw the confederate flag people think it is is just the confederate war flag the real confederate flag looks like the American flag but has 2 red bars and a white one in the middle and there is also 15 stars (I think) in a circle
