There was no discussion about ports. Having an SDXC card slot, 2 USB A and one USB 3 is definitely a huge step up from Apple's poor port selection on the 16" model. It's still an inconvenience to this day looking for a dongle every time I need to use a USB A device. So that's one huge advantage for the Surface Book 3.

also there is CUDA core support which for premiere pro users will be a good thing. pros really outweigh cons but the biggest con is apple's if you are used to logic pro or final cut pro then you are stuck with their ecosystem like it or not.

Hmm. Looks like you people are the Microsoft sheep.
At least you can use a dongle for USB A and SD card slot with the MacBook Pro but what about thunderbolt on the Surface? The surface book comes with a single USB C port that is even a thunderbolt 3.

For a so-called "Apple Sheep", you had a very even-handed and fair review of the Surface Book 3. It is definitely not for everyone. It's probably the epitome of the "jack of all trades, expert of none" in the computing world. But I'd argue that it does a lot of things very well. This isn't for the normal consumer. You definitely have to know what you're looking for and what your work flows are like to get the best device for yourself.

Great review: Keep the Surface 3.
I have to confess that I am a total non-committal when it comes to operating systems. I like the integration of the Mac with the iPhone and Apple Watch; I like the touch screen and the old games and backwards compatibility of software on Windows; and I like Linux Mint which has a stable and low resource hungry profile that is infinitely customize-able as to desktop themes, has the chops to do most things well.
My wish for Apple is that Tim Cook would stop trying to do 'WHAT STEVE JOBS WOULD DO' in his obsession of not using touch screens on computers and add at least the option of a touch screen to all Apple products. Disney nearly went bankrupt during the years after Walt Disney died, by not innovating. While Apple has had some innovations such as the Apple Watch, it is in danger of not innovating in areas such as user interfaces such as touchscreens (unless you buy a separate iPad or iPod touch). Using my 20 inch Samsung is just like using a giant iPad, and this touch capability is truly missed when playing games, swiping between applications, moving up and down on web pages... rather than fumbling around for a mouse.
I also wish that Apple and Microsoft would BOTH stop trying to force their ecosystems down the throat of their customers by trying to limit purchases through their respective app stores - to me this makes me angry when planned obsolescence is infiltrating the tech sector. We have WAY too much electronic wastes caused by updates in operating systems or hardware that shortens the lifespan of old phones or computers that were state of the art just four or five years ago.
Well, your video makes me dig out my old Samsung. Great to have choices between ecosystems - keeps us smarter, if not poorer in buying all of them.

    • @ronkemperful
      @ronkemperful 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Cubei I absolutely agree with your comment. I tried a program called "Splashtop" downloadable from the app store, to try out using a touchscreen on different operating systems from Windows XP to Windows 10 , and the Mac. The Mac barely had any on screen touch gestures. And I agree the interface for the Mac OS is my favorite between Windows and the Mac - though some Windows/Linux programs really shine with a touchscreen as opposed to using a touch pad. A bit of interesting information: iOs for the iPad is basically a dumbed down version of the Mac OS, which in turn is basically a layer running on the top of UNIX. Thanks for the comment.

I have a Surface Book and I love it. The screen "wobble" is from the hinge design, not from it being a touch screen. It's because the screen is removable so it becomes a Surface Pro tablet. The Surface Laptop doesn't have this issue as the screen isn't removable. I'll agree that the trackpad could use some work, and the backlighting of the keys is better than nothing but not ideal. But, the backlighting on my MacBook Pro has quit working altogether, so... :D

Great review... this is the first video I've seen from your channel and it was suggested to me probably because I am a Surface Book user... I have had mine since 2016 and it still rocks!
I am a mechanical engineer that mostly works with 3D designs, simulations, renders and a little bit of graphic design. So you can see that the Surface Book is the perfect device for my workflow... I can conceive an idea, sketch it, conceptualize it, modele it in 3D, simulate how it works and then render some images or videos. My device is quite old, so if I get higher demand of work or more complex designs, I will probably need a newer laptop and I will definitely upgrade to the Surface Book 3.
However I completely agree that this device is not for video editing. The MacBook Pro 16, or Dell XPS with better CPU will satisfy most people... But this device is the most versatile if you want to have only one device for almost all your needs.

When the SB first came out it was really a great design - today, not so much. The trackpad is definitely too small and a switch to Renoir would really get it close to the macbook in CPU performance. Some hardware revising would be nice as well, with smaller bezels and the pen could use an update. Slap on a 120hz screen and it would be a real 2020 contender.

I find the screen tone generally really pleasing to look at and the speakers are surprisingly full sounding. The keyboard is nice to type on and doesn’t flex. I wish it had better cooling and webcam but for a £950 laptop it still kicks ass and is going strong!

Good video. A couple of things I find missing from these comparisons is the software. Most graphic designers have spent years on the brilliant Mac software and that is reason alone to stick with them. Yes they are expensive but the fit and finish is superb. They also ‘just work’. I bought my base 2013 MacBook early 2015 when I started my design business and it’s never let me down and handled everything I’ve thrown at it. I had an iMac before that which I’d had for 7 years and a MacBook from 2008 which my sister is still using. Yes they are expensive but they are great value (most of the the time). However I resent the fact that apple hasn’t released a more affordable Mac Pro. I think this is a move to keep customers upgrading as most graphic designs/agencies only require iMacs.

I like my book 2, its the same shell design so it shares a lot of its flaws outside of the new one having improved detaching from the base. I get why they put the gpu exhaust port there, and its actually a good decision for some reasons but I wish they cut out part of the hinge that's basically negative space and put the vents exhausting out the back for the gpu. It's probably better for thermals at a desk but it definitely adds to the designs heft. That and that hinge. So unique, it's biomimetic and a great bit of industrial design.

I agree with most of the video. Very good review. The Surface Book 3 truly shines when you are travelling (I use my desktop at home). It's an all round tablet/laptop/workstation. I'm a Developer, so this works much better for me as I have to do much reading and prefer to read articles in Portrait mode. I would highly recommend the Surface Book 3 15" over the MacBook Pro 16. That's my opinion.

I did not see the video to the end. But I noticed you forget to mention the pencil device that comes with the laptop. This is one of the selling points if you want to use it as a tablet. I skipped to check if you detached it, but this is the purpose of the thick hinge and you should show more of it detached. I own a 2017 model and it has been very reliable, but I honestly almost never use it as a tablet, where it has a very weak battery range (most of the battery is in the base). But if you use it as a laptop and don't make heavy use of the NVIDIA card the battery is as good as any Mac.
BTW just got my first MacBook Pro a week ago and I am very happy with it. Knowing that there is not too much daily practical use for the dual features I think it is preferable to own a traditional laptop and an individual tablet for tablet applications. Dual laptop is not too practical and you overpay for something you don't use. I use an iPad 2018 as my daily tablet and it is way more practical than try to use the tablet on the Surface Book.
Anyway the Surface Book is a fantastic piece of engineering and at least mine has been very reliable. I was afraid that the hinge contacts would wear out fast, but mine still works as new. The screen is Apple quality and the keyboard is not too shabby. My main concern is that I overpaid and I would had been better served by a cheaper laptop with a superior NVIDIA card. But at the same time the Surface has a premium feel that other laptops lack. For example, screen resolution and color is better than cheaper non-dual laptops. So it is a compromise, but worth its cost at the end.
