In this video we will explain a common battery drain that we have seen at the shop on BMW e46, e91, e90, e92, e93 and we will cover how an alternator that looks like a good alternator can drain your battery when the car is parked and you do not drive it on BMW e46 e90 e91 e92 e93. If your car battery dies after not driving the car for a few days or even a day that battery drain could be caused by a bad alternator diode. We demonstrated battery drain caused by alternator on 2006 BMW 325i but it should cover the whole generation BMW E90 E91 E92 E93 and even generation E46 with 4 and 6 cylinder engine.

Hey, Thanks for bad alternator and symptoms. Very helpful. Let me add you are reading the forward voltage drop across the diode (pair) with your multimeter. The meter puts current through the diode to display 0.54 volts forward and 0 volts reverse when the silicon power diode is good. Other types of diodes may show 0.3 volts but these are not used in the diode pack in the alternator. There are six of them, each pair to rectify each phase of the 3 phase AC produced by the Alternator. A bad diode shows up with voltage ripple on the usually flat output of the alternator. This can be seen with an oscilloscope or shown when the alternator output is low, weak charge, weak voltage. Normal regulated voltage in the car is 13.8 to 14.2 volts above 1000 RPM, not at idle. Less voltage is a bad alternator (diodes), more voltage, 16 volts is a bad voltage regulator. Too much? An under or over voltage/ charged battery will shorten the life of the battery.

I have a bmw 2004 325xi wagon and fuse 54 is causing battery draw when the key if off. I pull the fuse 54 everything goes down to 0 am
What about on diesels? My 335d keeps draining battery completely dead within 8 hours

Hello, congratulations, it's nice to see a problem resolved, I have a 325i 2010 N53 slows down unstable and shakes when cold, it lasts 1 minute and afterward the car runs very well. When she does that I accelerate slightly and that prevents the shaking and slows it down unstable, do you have any idea, said the vanos? No smoke, no smell of gasoline. New spark plug and coil. Or with the engine running check for ac voltage at terminals. If ac voltage is present, bad diodes.
Do you mean battery terminal? Or the connection between your the +and ground...

Same issue just replaced the starter then I got a coolant leak replaced that drove it for 2-3 hrs and woke up tow dead batttery did you ever find out

Hey man, I keep hearing weird wirrrr sounds after it has turned off. Then when I go to turn on the car, SOMETIMES, their will be a one second delay with the same wirrr like when the car is off. I think my BMW E90 with LED Angel Eyes and Fog Lights. Would that be slowly draining after like a week at home?

I replaced new alternate and battery but my battery is still drawing. Come to know that my window motor is getting warm after I turned off the car. Is there anyway I can stop that?
Yeah remove the window relay and that relay is Frozen clothes so you need to replace it but I would pull it out even if you can't replace it right away cuz it could cause a fire

Changed alternator on my 2009 528i lasted 1 month .changed again ,changed again alternator bad again burning up alternators ? On 3rd alt now machanic says may be bad Modual. Also batery drain after a couple day parked.

@@kadecorey1347 yes battery drain because radio has parasitic draw, I now have to pull the radio fuse every time I leave the car parked for a long time . also had new battery programed to the car. The dealer wanted $ 3000. For a radio. $ 500. To find the problem.

Yesterday I drove to store came out started up fine after driving a few minutes it lost all power and would not drive normal the rest way after parking it the car would not start the battery was dead after charging the battery it started fine so drove it to autopart store and they said the alternator was fine and battery was good I can't figure it out please help

In most cases the regulator is the culprit not the alternator itself

#1 make sure your battery is registered to the car.... #2 on the negative terminal battery post intelligent charging fuse/cable may need replacing #3 relay # 15 and or #
30 may need replacing #4 check voltage regulator
So will disconnecting the alternator wire keep battery from draining?

Get a new or referbish your alternator. If they can be refurbished.
My car was having electrical issues, a lot, and noticed that the battery kept draining overnight. Got a new battery and it is still draining overnight. I'm thinking it's the diodes like you stated in the video, but can I just replace the voltage regulator and not the whole alternator? Thanks!
