Ian - 👍👍 I use an M3P Plus battery in my M4P and considered Remote-ID a non-issue here in LOS, that is until watching this video. I'm obviously not concerned about it over here, but curious how much the Remote-ID's continuously broadcasting data taxes the Plus battery when active.
DJI state it has zero impact on the battery life as it's using the existing antennae and transmission... If you're in Thailand, it should not be active as long as you have GPS locked
Hello! Very good video! If I understand you correctly, Drone Scanner can't see where the drone/pilot are if you have a drone in Europe under 250 grams?
I was hoping you were going to show whether the Remote ID error message goes away on the DJI Goggles when using the lower capacity battery. I just got a pair of the goggles two days ago and was very disappointed to learn that I have to have my phone connected to the goggles to broadcast the remote ID here in the US. I've ordered a bluetooth USB dongle that I am hoping I can plug into the goggles and have the phone connection over bluetooth. If that doesn't work then I'll return the goggles to DJI and wait for them to come out with a version where the RID is integrated.
@@IaninLondon Not the case for me with the Mini 3 Pro. I got the remote ID error regardless of battery. I've returned the Goggles 2 and will just wait for their next iteration where remote ID is integrated into the motion controller and/or headset.
@@AZGeek520 I tried to recreate the error but linked the Mini 4 Pro to the Goggles 2 and Motion Controller 2 outside, AFTER the drone had GPS lock. I'm wondering if that makes the difference?
I would think that if you unlock the height limit above the 120m, technically making it a C1 class drone after 1/1/24, the remote ID will be broadcast permanently as well. Important for EU residents who are hesitating on whether to unlock or not. I live in France and prefer to put up with the 120m limit and stay incognito ...
So where you get the plus battery ? Both look the same .. is there a markings on plus battery compared to to the normal battery Lovely video , thank you 🙏
The standard battery has "249 gms" printed on it whilst the Plus battery doesn't; it's plain. I bought mine in the US although you can also get them on eBay but double check with the seller that it's a proper Plus battery for extended flight time.
My own M4P shows up on app regardless of using plus batteries that came with M3P, standard battery that came with M3P (2453mAh) or standard battery that came with M4P (2590mAh)
Thanks for sharing Ian. Interesting to have an idea of what is coming. It will be interesting to see the reaction of these so called audit pilots when Remote ID comes. 😀👍
@@lforleee2004 Well from the few I have noted, and I know there are fair few others out there. They appear to go out out of their way to hide their identity. They are one day, going to be the root cause of killing the sub 250g drone benefits, and it pushes more regulation on everyone, spoiling it for all the genuine sensible drone pilots. Not getting in to a rant, it's just my thoughts.
If I understand correctly, and you are flying under part 107 you are required to have RID regardless of the battery you are using. I hope DJI will do a firmware update that will allow you to turn on RID if you are using the regular battery. Otherwise you will have to install a module. Seems silly if your Drone has the capibility built in.
Good to know! I think you're right, it's only a matter of time before RemoteID comes to EU/UK Deliberate drone nuisances cannot be effectively dealt with unless they can locate the pilot, so it becomes a security concern. Inevitably, some less responsible pilots will intentionally harass neighbours or fly over concerts and football matches, causing this to become a pressing issue. At the end of the day, we're ALL responsible for how this hobby develops and how we're received by the public. As always... there's gonna be a few bad apples : /
Any hacks to disable remote ID of better yet override DJI authority so one can operate whatever without the stupid “unable to takeoff warnings” for whatever reason such as this RID issue
Very interesting test Ian and I've had a few people asking about the RID but not active in the EU yet. When I use a Mini 3 Pro battery in my Mini 4 Pro, it comes up with Plus battery warning, so would that also mean it would activate the RID? Many thanks for sharing the info Ian and Happy New Year to you and your family.
It triggers the “plus battery” message even though it’s a standard M3P battery in the Mini 4 Pro and thus over 250g; I will try to test but I have an iPhone, I believe the WiFi is not enabled on drone scanner, is that correct?
If you put in the plus battery can you not fly it under the 250-500 gram class? That class’s constraints seem really light but having longer battery life seems really appealing. Are there any other negative considerations?
Thanks for the video I have the same with the plus battery. Can I ask a question what goggles are you using with the mini 4 , as I'm currently looking for a pair to suit
I don't have the MP4 but the MP3 and was curious, so I performed a test. I'm in France at the moment. [T1] No GNSS lock. (Inside) Motors turning. Wifi SSID appeared and, as normal, turns off. No RID [T2] GNSS Lock. Motors turning. Wifi SSID appeared and, as normal, turns off. No SSID. Both tests with standard & Plus batteries.
if you then put a regular 249g battery in the drone, does this turn the remote ID off again? ie - is remote ID activated ONLY while using the Plus batteries?
Thank you for your excellent content. It's been very helpful. Does this mean that the Mini 4 Pro (plus battery) auto remote ID will not work in the EU? I have been in contact with DJI and they claim that the remote ID on a Mini 4 Pro that was bought in the USA also works in the EU and other countries. I'm confused :)
My understanding is that using the plus battery in the Mini 4 Pro will result in remote ID being automatically triggered in any country that requires remote ID for drones over 250 g. So it should switch it on automatically if you're flying with it in the EU
So, remote ID is using wifi? So, what is the likely range that you would be tracked? Wifi has rules over its signal strength, and surely that means someone would need to be in your location to track you?
@@IaninLondon Ian, in that case, a future video would be interesting to see how far away you could be from a drone to actually track it. Cheers for your work chap, appreciated. HNY!

so technically if I use the plus battery I would need an internet connection to fly? Im not exactly sure how this works, if I registered my drone with the remote ID built in, does the internal system update and stored permanently to where I dont need an active internet connection to fly or does the drone/station goes online and verifies my drone is registered?
Other UK restrictions... please could you explain max height and max distance when using motion controller and goggles v2.... regardless of setting I have a max height of 30m and max distance of 50m. Please comment as if this is the case its pretty much a waist of money and going on eBay.
I think you've still got it in beginner mode. You have to log in to the fly app with your verified DJI email account email address. Go to DJI.com, and sign up for free, then enter that email into the fly app and you'll be able to fly full height and full distance.
if not yet then soon cause as you can see dji is the first that wants to become compliant to stay in business and sell drones to you. And also to stay in business with the local agencies like the emergency and fire departments. Just a matter of time till your drone with a take off weight over 250 gr will act according to remote id.
The once my phone actually saw the RID on my Mni 4 I was able to take screen shots and there was no information on Pilot or Remote location and even the drone location, height and distance was way off. The drone was stationary at the time.
Your statement was quite prophetic. With all of the things that DJI included on their drones - geofencing, attitude limitations in mountainous areas and forcing RID to get updated features- they still will be banned in the USA for suspicion of spying. I’ll keep the drones I own now, but definitely will not buy more.
Bought the mini 4 pro fly more plus by mistake. Now I have 3 paperweights and had to buy 3 more regular batteries. Or pay 15% restock fee. No way in hell I'm flying emitting RID. I'll use the bigger batteries when I'm out in the middle of nowhere. Why buy a mini at all if you're going to register and send out RID
I can imagine this been an issue let's say you fly around your local area regular someone will be willing to complain about it regardless of whether your doing wrong or not fair enough if your filming somones back yard that comes under invasion of privacy. I was flying locally for someone up the road shouting abuse I was 100ft up just flying locally when I was landing hearing abuse. Imagine this tracking RID and them rocking up at your door for confrontation after getting your exact location. It should only be available to police caa if a formal complaint was raised but for the public to have this I don't really agree. You can't get an address off a car plate so why a drone.
its not giving the address away tho - its giving the location. Your analogy of a number plate etc - is senescence. Just because you have taken off from x location doesnt mean that is ur address. Just as much as if I see ur car parked at the same location - that may not be your house. If you are doing nothing wrong - then with Remote ID - I dont see any issues. If you dont want someone to track you then dont take off from a location to where you are known. Its not rocket science. - Well maybe for some it is.
I just did the same check here in my house in Berlin. - RC2 on - Plus Battery in M4P - M4P on - RC2 warns with a red notification that using Plus Batteries does not comply with C0 regulation, tip of a finger, notification gone - Drone Scanner app started - switched on the motors - RC2 warns with an orange notification "no GPS, fly carefully" - Drone Scanner app still showing 0 drones - left it all running for a minute, no changes Have alle the current firmware updates installed. Different behaviour here. Strange.
It took around a minute for it to show for me. Open your phone's wifi settings and search for wifi networks and see if it shows up after a minute or so.
@@IaninLondon Did check again, still no RID signal! I had several views on: Drone Scanner App, Android WiFi scanning and WiFi Analyzer App. None showed any signal. Not while motors are running, even not after lifting up to half a meter in the room. For 2 minutes at least. After landing again, though, there appeared the standard WiFi AP from the drone with its name in it for fast share. Still nothing in Drone Scanner App. I opted out my M4P from C0 in favour of preserving the 500m height limit in 2024 and on. After the last firmware update the height limit was 120m again and the blue link "request higher limit" was there again. Clicked on it and after a wink of an eye the limit was 500m again. So I have 2 ideas concerning the different outcome with our two drones: - either the RID only comes with drones that are still C0 - or the RID only comes if the height limit is 120m C0-alike I suppose there is a simple logic defined by DJI that leads to a different behaviour between our two M4Ps. We just have to figure out what this is. 🙂
I'm genuinely unsure. I haven't changed my Mini 4 Pro in any way. I've not taken the declassified it, but only flying in UK so far, I've not had the option to
@@IaninLondon I must admit, the whole EASA FAA CAA xxx mess does mix things up inside my head sometimes and then I have to re-read some documents. Which helps to remind some important things. I now suppose that my M4P does not have to send out RID at all. Because we here are operating under EASA rules. And these only demand marking the sub 250g drone with your personal e-ID, no more than that. C1 and up / >=250g have to send out RID when being used. Probably my M4P does not send out RID because it simply does not have to in the EU. In the UK drones will at least partly behave different because the different legislation.
2 weeks ago having an FAA Part 107 licence, I flew a P4Pro in restricted airspace after being given clearanc in Las Vegas. I had to purchase and attach a RID (Remote ID Unit) to the drone. Interesting process, and everything worked fine.
This is just a guess, but my guess is if you are going to fly under 107, or you just want RID on all the time, not sure why, but ok, then register your drone and enter the registration info into the drone. While I have not tested this on dji mini 3 or 4, if its registered, it should broadcast rid all the time.
Hi Ian my Brother doesn’t have a drone can he get a flier ID . Without registering so he can fly my Drone , when he logs in to the CAA it asks for his Bank details. He was told it was free . Whey is asking for bank details . I myself Have OP & FD . If it’s free why is asking for bank details. Stuck
The Flyer ID is free, but you have to take a test. If you read this page, it says near the bottom what you will need, including a debit card IF you require an operator ID. So click start, but make sure you take teh option for flyer ID only when that asks; don't take an Operator ID option... register-drones.caa.co.uk/individual/register-and-take-test-to-fly
So... be very careful when installing a software/firmware update for the UAS or its batteries. Don't start the motors at home, because if GPS is not locked, your home's location will be broadcast. SCARY? Yes. If you do so at home within an FRZ, you've committed an offence, because the legal definition of flying is from Engines On until Engines Off - and that incident's data may be used against you retrospectively. To be clear, imagine that you were banned from driving your car and you started the engine on your driveway to check its function - the day before your ban was to end. This would be discoverable if RID existed for cars - and you could be prosecuted for Contempt of Court, Driving Without a Licence, and Driving While Uninsured. You could thus be sent to prison, lose your Driving Licence and be fined. No small matter, then, this RID. Thanks Ian.
Two things come to mind there though; 1, if GPS is not locked how can it broadcast your location? 2, Most regulations apply to outside flying. Inside a building, with walls and a roof would not be controlled or restricted. Certainly that's the case in the UK with the CAA making that clear.
In the US, I only have 2850 mAh batteries (4) - I downloaded 5 RID apps and spent about 6 hours over a 2 day period and only 1 app ever saw the drone and only twice. RID at least in the US broadcast all the time regardless of battery size. Part 107 missions require RID small or large battery. I too saw that DJI notice about the PLUS Battery and don't know what that's all about.
Interesting! I live in the US and wasn’t aware of this update, but it’s good to know it’s active. Personally, I don’t mind having the remote ID function enabled with or without the plus battery. There’s enough crazy operators out there that I hope it 1) keeps them in check more or 2) enables the authorities to use the information to capture them if they do something illegal with their drone(s).
there are also too many Karen's and other drone haters, and it's really a deep visceral hate, to have pilot location broadcast. Keep in mind there is supposed to be a FAA remote ID exception for sub 250 gram, unregistered drone, flown recreationally anyways.
I am glad RID is no longer broadcast on the mini4 when flying under 250g (using std battery) recreationally! Never should have been in the first place. Never was supposed to be per the FAA.
why? The drone will still broadcast rid when required, it will just no longer automatically broadcast it when it's not required. What is the problem with that?
@@RebelByNature because I don’t want to pay that much for a drone that does stuff I don’t want it to do. I will stick to my Mini 3 Pro and Air 2s and many other drones that I keep control over

Interesting. I wonder if it’s the case with my Mavic 3 Pro too? I will need to test it indoors!
Note: Drone Scanner does not work on Apple iOS. It’s an Apple security issue. Works great on Android.
Hello! Very good video! If I understand you correctly, Drone Scanner can't see where the drone/pilot are if you have a drone in Europe under 250 grams?
Correct. Remote ID isn't on when using a standard battery
@@IaninLondon Thank you so much! Keep up the good work! 👍
Hi Ian,
Not watched for a bit.
All the best for 2024.
Awesome info!
Awesome video!
Good point. I need to do some testing.... 👍🏻👍🏻
I’ll have this question answered here in a week or so. If goggles don’t work because of remote I’d with standard battery I will return them.
@@axebeard7677 Goggles 2 will work fine, without the Remote ID error with the standard battery. I tested it
@@IaninLondon Not the case for me with the Mini 3 Pro.
How interesting. Thanks for sharing.
They need to start making dji mini series light enough to be under 250g with plus batteries imo.
You the first one to talk about this as I've noticed this in the downloads notes , does the mini3pro have the remote I d capability?
Yes it does...
@@IaninLondon Thank you. Much appreciated 👍
Got mine from an ebay vendor. Same size but doesn't have the '249g' + label
My own M4P shows up on app regardless of using plus batteries that came with M3P, standard battery that came with M3P (2453mAh) or standard battery that came with M4P (2590mAh)
Are you in the USA and are you on the latest firmware?
Thanks for sharing Ian. Interesting to have an idea of what is coming. It will be interesting to see the reaction of these so called audit pilots when Remote ID comes. 😀👍
and how will they be effected. The point of them is to make the drone known so it seems not that big of a deal.
Would the same thing happen if you use mini 3 pro batteries inside the mini 4 pro drone please?
This Remote ID issue only occurs with my Goggles 2, extended batteries in my Mini 4 Pro (I'm in Canada).
I think you're right, it's only a matter of time before RemoteID comes to EU/UK
Deliberate drone nuisances cannot be effectively dealt with unless they can locate the pilot, so it becomes a security concern.
Thanks Ian for the information.
Yes, I should have mentioned I was using a Mini 3 Plus battery in the Mini 4....
The standard mini 3 battery weighs more than the standard mini 4 battery, so using that battery in the mini 4 will put it over the 249 g limit.
Ah, understood. I don't believe that triggers the remote ID. I'll double check
It's the Goggles 2 and Motion Controller 2
@@IaninLondon thanks mate
Very informative thank you.
Thanks! :)
To the point..nice vid.
I don't have the MP4 but the MP3 and was curious, so I performed a test. I'm in France at the moment.
[T1] No GNSS lock. (Inside) Motors turning. Wifi SSID appeared and, as normal, turns off. No RID
[T2] GNSS Lock.
@@IaninLondon Thanks! I appreciate you.
Hey, thanks for the info. If I get my mini 4 pro classified to a C1 drone( to increase the 120m limit) , will this enable the remote id on it?
With the CAA consultation enforcing remote id, what was the purpose of the survey if our opinion is ignored?
My thoughts exactly....
I saw that when I did the firmware update.
Remote ID is now active in Europe ... Thanks EASA
So, remote ID is using wifi? So, what is the likely range that you would be tracked? Wifi has rules over its signal strength, and surely that means someone would need to be in your location to track you?
This has been discussed at length online; keep in mind the control range of these models is 5-8 miles at times.
@@IaninLondon Ian, in that case, a future video would be interesting to see how far away you could be from a drone to actually track it. Cheers for your work chap, appreciated. HNY!
Brilliant Ian mate. 👍👍
Well, looks like I cannot upload anymore videos. I used basic Windows Movie maker as so rubbish at editing and was easy to drag and drop video, drag and drop logos and add music with ease. I had an issue other day after trying to upload a video, so had to delete and tried to reinstall Movie maker.... Seems its obsolete now 😥😥😥😥
Need a free video converter that works exact same with no messing. Any ideas?
Davinci Resolve, free and it works. Yeah, there are many "options" that might confuse people, but you don't need any of them to do what you want AND there are 100's of videos explaining how to do what you want to do.
@@Hat_Uncle Will check Davinci out. Been messing with CapCut that someone suggested and has taken me hours to edit a 10 min video and will not upload as bet is rubbish. Basic Movie maker was a dream. Will try your Davinci and try again tomorrow. All I want to do is drop recorded video in, drop pictures and add music.... should take moments and not hours. Im rubbish with computers, hence reason need an easy video editor.
I've used Filmora by Wondershare; you pay a one-off payment of £50 and it's yours with updates for life. Very powerful and intuitive.
Thanks for that buddy and will look at Filmora, but really need a FREE and easy to use video editor as do not make money from my uploads, so not keen on spending £50 for something I will only use now and again. If I was earning Money for uploads, I may get great software.
so technically if I use the plus battery I would need an internet connection to fly?
Thank you for your response, much appreciated@@IaninLondon

Hi Ian, does this work with the mini 3 pro?
Nice 1 Ian

Does this apply to the DJI Mini 3Pro as well? Got some plus batteries...
if not yet then soon cause as you can see dji is the first that wants to become compliant to stay in business and sell drones to you.
And also to stay in business with the local agencies like the emergency and fire departments.
Just a matter of time till your drone with a take off weight over 250 gr will act according to remote id.
@@typxxilps Better stay away from updates then....
@@Stefan_Boerjessonbetter not use Plus batteries & stay within 250g 🤷♂️
@@GetUrOwnHandle I bought the plus batteries for a reason, the extended flight time. No way to retire them.
The once my phone actually saw the RID on my Mni 4 I was able to take screen shots and there was no information on Pilot or Remote location and even the drone location, height and distance was way off. The drone was stationary at the time.
It can't show the location if it hasn't locked GPS, and the moment it gets GPS it will switch off unless you're in the US
The hobby is dying fast. 😢
I suppose the only brightside to Remote ID is that it'll lead to legal BVLOS flights in the near future
Is there a way to tell if The Plus battery is being used? & wat remote I'd displays is an invasion of privacy.
Has anyone tested this firmware update using mini pro 3 batteries in a mini 4 pro? The battery is heavier but is not considered a plus battery.
Excellent video to the point 👍
One more thing, try it w/ The MIni 3pro battery plus on The Mini 4. See if shiws remote id.
I was using a Mini 3 Pro Plus battery for this test...
@IaninLondon Is there anyway of downloading the Previous Update, undoing the this new current one ?
@@ipadmini1874 no, they never allow role back usually
@IaninLondon new mini 4's don't come w/ this new update, right?
So to get the update, I would have to download it right?
Would article 16 allow you to fly the mini 4 pro with a plus battery in more areas?
No, but it would for larger drones
Okay the next question, if you go above 400 ft, does it turn on the transponder remote ID?
No, but you are then committing a full criminal offence.
I just did the same check here in my house in Berlin.
- RC2 on
- Plus Battery in M4P
- M4P on
- RC2 warns with a red notification that using Plus Batteries does not comply with C0 regulation, tip of a finger, notification gone
- Drone Scanner app started
- switched on the motors
- RC2 warns with an orange notification "no GPS, fly carefully"
- Drone Scanner app still showing 0 drones
- left it all running for a minute, no changes
Have alle the current firmware updates installed. Different behaviour here. Strange.
It took around a minute for it to show for me. Open your phone's wifi settings and search for wifi networks and see if it shows up after a minute or so.
@@IaninLondon Thanks, will check again
So I have 2 ideas concerning the different outcome with our two drones:
- either the RID only comes with drones that are still C0
- or the RID only comes if the height limit is 120m C0-alike
I suppose there is a simple logic defined by DJI that leads to a different behaviour between our two M4Ps.
I guess there will be a time when dji drones will gain value again once you add "no remote id"
I assume if a RC2 controller is used Remote ID doesn’t work?
That's not the case. 8bwas using the RC2 for this testing when it activated
2 weeks ago having an FAA Part 107 licence, I flew a P4Pro in restricted airspace after being given clearanc in Las Vegas.
I had to purchase and attach a RID (Remote ID Unit) to the drone. Interesting process, and everything worked fine.
Wonder if it would pick up a drone in the uk that has fcc mod installed ?
Good call 👍🏻👍🏻
yeah people need to get the 1.5w boost its far better than 0.5w
So how do you turn remote ID on permanently for those of us flying in the rule it won't bother us.
So tired of logouts and geofencing. Try taking it on long vacation without internet connection to the tablet.
FCC rules state that no RID is required for under 250 gms, so after this update you should see no RID when using a standard battery...
This is only true is you mission is pleasure under 44809 however is you mission is under part 107 RID is required no matter the weight.@@IaninLondon

We are going to loose this great hobby! You only have to open your eyes!! Xjet has it sussed!
I am glad RID is no longer broadcast on the mini4 when flying under 250g (using std battery) recreationally! Never should have been in the first place. Never was supposed to be per the FAA.
Another good reason not to buy a mini 4 pro or update older drones
why? The drone will still broadcast rid when required, it will just no longer automatically broadcast it when it's not required. What is the problem with that?
