I'm doing a standing ovation. Not for Matt Petgrave, but for the fact he's been arrested. Disgusting that anyone would cheer for this guy let alone a standing ovation. I know the intention to kill wasn't there, but kicking his leg out like that was meant to do bodily harm. He needs to go to jail.

True. If it was a white guy who did the same kicking motion with the same outcome the outrage would be the same. Or if it was two black players involved.

As a Player myself since I was 7 an still play on Our FD Team an a lifelong continuing Martial Arts Student I actually am Myth Busting this an am doing a Side Kick on a Dummy with the help of my Coach an Rink..this was absolutely intentional, he even extends his knee at the back of the Kick which is where that Kick gets its torque, an pushes off his throat! Iam still sickened by that Game.

I am not sure if there is another angle of this because Matt cannot chase the player in front of him and suddenly kicks Adam on the neck ? i am not sure if Matt lost balance because it happens but the way it shows on this video, it is completely showing a karate kick and above his own helmet hitting Adam on the neck.
If anyone could show another angle, then i would change my mind but it doesnt look that there is another one unless there is a coaches challenging camera above but other than that, it is still a world tragedy.

It's clear from the footage that Petgrave intended to cause harm to his opponent Johnson, regardless of whether he intended to kill him or not, he would know the harm/risk a blade to the body/neck would cause. He should be charged with manslaughter as a minimum. Can't believe people gave Petgrave a standing ovation, he should have been banned from playing while a full investigation took place.

After watching the video of the death of Adam Johnson multiple times, I believe this is murder. At first I thought it was incidental contact and accidental, but it becomes apparent that the opposing player Matt Petgrave was targeting Johnson. Yes there was another player in between the two of them, but you can see Petgrave is following Johnson’s path. As Johnson starts to pivot to go behind his teammate, Petgrave puts on the brakes with his right leg (you can see the snow kick up) and lifts his left leg to make contact with Johnson. You may say the intent of Petgrave was to slow down Johnson, but the horror of it all is how high the skate goes. Call it what you want, murder or manslaughter, I see it as intentional.

During the entire approach towards Johnson, Petgrave's body was pointed low and to the left as he was setting up the perfectly timed and executed kick...at no time did he lose his balance, as claimed by many, but maintained his focus and body posture to enable him to raise his left leg in a deliberate kick to Johnson's body. As a family member of a professional hockey player my heart goes out to Adam's family, fiancee, team mates and friends. My deepest condolences to them as they grieve the loss of Adam.
This was not an accident. It made me sick to my stomach that fans would cheer for Matt Petgrave. I believe that he needs suspended until the investigation has concluded.
Hockey leagues also need to enforce the wearing of neck guards. As the players would never step onto the ice without their helmet and pads, a neck guard needs to be as commonplace in all levels of the game.

A neck guard wouldn't have saved Adam in this case. A 200lb player's weight on an 1/8th inch blade is more force than any neck guard can dissipate. Neck guards can protect against glancing blows, but this was like being hit with an axe.

Here in the uk I think there is 2 different kinds of manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter (where there was no malicious intent to cause any kind of harm but the reckless actions or negligence of some kind resulted in death) and manslaughter ( where there was a malicious and deliberate attempt to cause pain/injury that resulted in death) I could be wrong but I think this is how it goes in the uk. But hey, its social media, feel free to make a guilty charge against a guy you have no clue of the game he's playing. Your response is exactly why attorneys get to help chose the jurys....so that they have people who can make an informed decision judge the conduct as reckless or a normal hockey play. I've got 35 years playing and a fan for over 50 years as my background. That was an unfortunate accident. Go look up Evander Kane getting his wrist cut by Pat Maroon, Clifford cutting Gostisbehere's face, or the most similar situation, Clint Malarchuk getting his throat cut while goaltending for Buffalo (cut by his own team mate).
