Now you can make a third video with the conical wheels and we'll all be watching again.
i dont think it will happen cause it appeared that there was a sixth tunnel but it was caved in at their side possibly so even with conical wheels, they wont actually make it to the bridge on rail, just the same spot but faster
Maybe it's time to find another abandoned railroad to explore! @@gavinreed6113

When you fail on trip one because wheels you should probably Google train wheels and know this.
the issue is he needs a stopper for the wheels so the cart doesn't derail
@@rukirgamingyou don’t really even need flanges if you’re not going that fast.
Needs to be better engineered as well. Their brake design is wack and so many other things about it. Slow on top of that. Seems if it was that big of a goal they would have built a more solid cart.

Such a wonderful place to be on the rails......

That part of the video is bs, they knew exactly where the bridge was, etc... this is 2024, not 1990 stand by me 😂
life tip: if you intend to go to a place ~3km only one time, you don't need to build a vehicle to get there. Just walk.
@captainLoknar was it not 10miles?
@@saltyXrice 10 miles is a lot but is walkable in a day. And I think the point was that the effort put into making this vehicle (which was not actually capable of making the journey there, let alone back) was at least equivalent if not more than just walking.
@@EncryptedLiberty Much easier to mountain bike, takes about an hour each way. Simply pay attention to weather forecasts and don't go when it's hot. Plus you can detour around locked gates and rockfalls.
My grandma once told me that the difference between ignorance and arrogance is when you know you’re making a mistake, you’ve been given ample opportunity to fix it yet you still carry on.
This is you and the conical wheel
Oof... and there is also unkindness, and often it is passed down from the ancestors and is called wisdom - I speak from personal experience. All of us need to make mistakes to learn. I imagine he not only learned about the importance of the conical wheel, but also a lot about mechanics and fixing things on the fly, as well as logistics and planning. It is true it takes some arrogance to think you can do anything in the world. If we didn't have it and had never set out on the journey of making mistakes and learning from them, we would still be living in caves.

Everyone is saying “you need conical wheels” but the real answer is that you need both conical and flanged.
If you look up images of train wheels you will see that they are slightly conical as they are the optimal shape for self steering on tracks, then they have flanges to keep them from derailing on sharper turns
No one saying that he needed conical wheels was suggesting removing the only safety feature on his cart lmao
Honestly, I am shocked that this TH-camr never decided to even check how train wheels actually work.
this all could have been fixed had they just welded the damn flanges to the axle so they couldn't move.
Railroader here. Okay so what i would recommend is getting wheels from an old hi rail truck or a push cart. Go to the local rail yard and ask around. Im sure if you show up with a decent bottle of whiskey im sure someone could hook ya up. They run about $1,3000 CAD brand new. So maybe a couple bottles. Scrap yards maybe? But id recommend something thats built specifically for that purpose.
Use brake drums lol
What’s the likelihood you could run into authorities when on these adventures?
@@matthew_natividad low but it is criminal to do this because its still railroad property and they treat it like being on active rails for some reason
@@matthew_natividadin Pa we have active tracks...if you are somewhat vigilant you can travel the whole country by rail or tracks.....some workers have a personal stake in calling the cops, others not so much. We used to hang on an abandoned tressel over a river, and sometimes when a train would come some of the drivers would throw 6 packs of water and snacks out for us lol.
@@grekygrekThat sounds pretty cool.
Just search for steel rail cart wheels. There are plenty of options and they are not expensive. Your biggest design flaw after having the wrong wheels is that you didn't have a strong enough way to keep your wheel spacing from changing.
Wouldn't that be very hard to lift? With the rock being where it is it all needs to be semi-portable.
@@awake_at_the_wheel7644it'll probably only add like 10-20kg

You make a good point. For this reason: also bring sticks of dinamite and pickaxe to dig a hole to place the dinamite into :)
Or the extra effort is easily outweighed by the hours they spent fixing breakdowns related to this exact issue.
Either works.
@@lincolnv9261 Dynamite could work. Or make it so that the heavy wheels can be detached, so you can carry the kart past the big rock in 5 parts (the body and the 4 wheels separately). Then you just have make sure that one wheel isn't too heavy to carry, instead of the whole thing.

Why does the distance increase when 2 tunnels are closed off i.e. the distance is cut short.
Because when the tunnels are closed, you have to hike around it. It adds about 4-5 extra miles for each tunnel closed @@doripenem
Well, your comment provided a quick bit of self-shock therapy for me. I read your post and was like, "ppft, why does this guy have TWO girlfriends. " I don't know if it was jealousy or anger at the idea. 10 seconds later, I realized the nonsense of it all and y'all were just some ladies hiking... I though the whole experience was interesting, so a few sentences up, I decided to start telling this whole little adventure, that happened right here. On this very TH-cam video, in the comments, under a post by @intotheether3803, where she was detailing an account of hiking on a 100+ degree weather that day day. Her post was followed by some laughter at the memory and nostalgia, before being left to be found 2 weeks later, by some gentleman thinking that her post was a humble brag / blatant lie about have 2 girlfriends and/ or hiking. I was that very same gentleman. I decided to turn the whole ordeal into a creative writing assignment to offset and hopefully correct whatever strange response that was initially incited by an innocent memory. One holding a trove of happy experience, despite taking place in a 100+ degree weather that day day.
On a side note, in another book, yet to be written of wants and adventures. I want a train trail cart also. It's a great idea, and I hope it materializes in my future reality.

As a hiker, I always liked to follow abandoned railway lines. They almost tell a story of the old days. You took me to beautiful landscapes through the video that I may never get to in my lifetime. I especially like this rocky, rugged landscape! And it must be a great experience to travel all this by rail cart. The experience gained - even if it is sometimes difficult - always brings you forward! Keep going!
Done this hike maybe 12 times now over the years and when i saw you get to the “last tunnel” with no collapse and only 2 minutes left of the video i was so worried you guys were gonna give up.
You can walk through that last collapsed tunnel btw its just a rock pile in front but the inside is totally fine. Reminds me of the first time i went there too we went to see the abandoned trains and started where you guys did. Walked all the way to the trestle without knowing where it was got back to the car at 9pm and didnt see any abandoned trains. I did that hike with my dad and family when I was about 8 years old, it was pretty far and I didn't walk all the way and now I kind of regret it, but it was a great hike because we got lost on our way back and when we finally got to the car our tent flew away so we just drove back to San Diego and it is one of my favourite adventures, even though I didn't see the bridge

If you can't find or afford railcart wheels, think about using the front wheel rims of a garden tractor or riding mower. They should ride over the rail with enough clearance to allow for the difference during the curves in the track. The noise can be dampened by wrapping the metal to metal contact area with rubber. Good luck.
By the amount of money he made on this single video he can easily afford a second hand or new railway service pushcart.
That bit at about 20 mins in.. thank you for that. Im glad you got to see your bridge, i cant imagine what it would feel like to finally stand there

Search for conical wheels and watch the video that Lesics has on it. He explains why...@@kennethschultz6465
@@kennethschultz6465 The wheels of a train are conical. If you ever see a wine barrel rolling down 2 rails it keeps itself centered because the ends of the barrel are conical. When a train goes around corners the wheel on the outside of the curve rides on a larger diameter than the wheel on the onside helping the train turn. If you look at most race cars that compete on an oval track you will see that the tires on one side (the right side in America) are larger than the wheels on the other side helping the car turn. There should be TH-cam videos about this.

For those of you who are interested this is the former San Diego and Arizona Railroad or otherwise known as “the impossible railroad”. It got this nickname from how hard it was to build the line. The railroad almost pretty much lost all of its presence when the southern pacific (who owned it at the time) started dieselizing it’s roster and fading out the steam locomotives. The line was abandoned in the 70s by the sp and to my knowledge it’s been pretty much dormant ever since The SP abandoned it in. Not much survives of this railroad par a 2-8-0 consolidation #104 (which is in terrible condition), a few railcars, and Southern pacific 4-6-0 #2353 which, while not owned by the sd&a, frequently operated on the stretch of line. If you want more there’s wiki articles and some well done books about its history on Amazon.
I would write more but writing a TH-cam comment on a phone is incredibly hard when you have to go back and forth between sentences.
I will gladly be tracking down those books, the history of this track is new to me and utterly fascinating. You've made my day, thank you!

Dude, even if you didn't find the bridge, you didn't drag your friend out there on a worthless journey. You shared one hell of an adventure with your best friend. Sometimes that is just as good as what you are searching for in the first place. And the cherry on top is that you actually did find the bridge when you thought the journey was over. You kept pushing just a little more and you reached your destination because you refused to quit. Hell yeah. That being said, next time please plan a little better and put a little more time into your cart.
I read about this bridge a few months back and have been really wanting to take a trip out to it. My only option is to hike it instead of building a go-kart train though lol. Good to see you made it out there!

Even better than Conical wheels are train wheels that are curved, so that as it rests on the track, the train wheel will hug the track that it is resting on.
This design is used on the Shinkansen railway trains in Japan and offers the smoothest train ride ever because it's more stable when going around curves.
The reason your old wheels broke apart so easily is because they are sand cast ones which will not hold under tension that is applied to the metal and the flange and wheel aren't forged as one unit.
The other thing I would like to point out is that you need your axles to pivot left or right so that it can move in the direction with the curve.
This is why I love TH-cam! Watching people be creative, ingenious, and allowing all of us to enjoy in the journey.
WOW! What a video!! Powering through the hard times to get what you were working so hard for. And Preston, the words at the end were touching. Some people, like myself, needed to hear “don’t give up when things are hard”. You are the MAN! Keep being you and pursuing the smiles in life!

I was one of those "conical wheels" guys on the first video, but seeing your enthusiasm, production quality, and effort for just creating an experience with a friend, I don't care how janky your hooptie is.
I got frustrated by how many obstacles he created to his own success by half-assing it so much.
@@elrey8876 I agree but a lot of us have also just bodged something quickly to see if it works. He's doing that and have a great time.
@@althejazzmanHe bodged it last time and it didn't work. And then he did it again.
I love the sicere and personal storytelling. It feels as if we were in that kart aswell, through all the highs and lows. I loved the pacing of the video. A masterclasd in editing and enganging the viewer. Amazing work!

He’s seriously incredibly talented at creating real, vulnerable, connecting yet uplifting content. 💖😭🥹
Wow man, I can’t remember the last time I throughly enjoyed a video as much as I enjoyed this one. Genuinely awesome production quality. Subbed!!!
Now THAT is how an adventure is supposed to look! Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Ngl I got full body chills at the bridge reveal
huh, when he stopped before the bend and did the long talk as if he didn't know it was just around the corner it was like... yeah, this is gonna be a forced big reveal isn't it? meh
bro is gonna have the most insane dad lore
underrated comment
This is the perfect opening twenty minutes to a horror movie about two cool dudes you make a train car to visit a very old bridge in the middle of nowhere when they run into a group of cannibal desert track dwellers.
“Red add’s 5 horse power” I know sum big green bandits that would love you 😂
