Today I got all the ingredients to make my very first homemade Masala Dosa!! Its a South Indian dish and we love it! Let me know if you like my recipe and leave me a comment below :)

I am an Indian guy and tried making round, thin, cripsy dosas but the batter never listens to me 🤣🤣. But still I somehow manage to get them thin and ok-ish.

Dosa is cooked on a flat tawa (skillet) and only on one side. The one you are using (Griddle) is for chapati/Roti. And you crisped it a little more then ideal.

Hi Jessica while cooking potato curry first you need to add mustard seeds once you see mustards jumping you need to add a pinch of turmeric powder,split chenna dal then add onions,fenner seeds,ginger garlic paste,Asafoetida just a sprinkle will do,generally I go for green chilli paste.after onion turned little brownish I add 5 to 6 drops of lemon and then drop the mashed potato into it and close the lid on low flame.this tastes so yummy .next we make onion chutney also for dosa .same recipe as potato instead of potato we can add 3 to 4 onions and you can add tamarind or lemon drops into it because health wise consuming too much tamarind is not good. One more thing Jessica you can make peanut along with coconut powder it is sooo yummy..in south india people also like to eat upma dosa that is after making dosa they fill upma in it..
Authentic masala onion, garlic asafoetida are not added, lemon juice it won't go at all

The potato filling can be used for multi purpose other than masala dosa : can be used as side dish or curry for chapati, plain dosa, poori, for making vada pav, aloo bonda, as patty in veg burger and finally most delicious as curry with hot rice with ghee

Take tamarind water and put don't put that much tamarind.
To make tamarind water, soak in Luke warm water for half and hour. Also avoid putting anything hot or warm in the mixer grinder, it alters the taste.

Hi...this is fantastic for a first try...my first day of dosa making was a disaster :) ...to that tomato chutney, I usually add roasted peanuts and that gives a very beautiful flavour....also if you find your dish has turned too hot due to chili, you can add some sugar/ jaggery to balance the taste...some people hate adding sweet to their cooking but some love it :)...also if you can find black mustard seeds, add them to the oil, once they splutter and add the rest of the ingredients for the potato sabji.
We have dosa for dinner also.

Quick Tip:
1. Use a flat bottom ladle instead of curved one you used, If Dosa is in your future food list. Flat bottom spread the batter easily, evenly and faster.
2. Do not flip cook the Dosa, Let it cook from one side only, the other side will automatically get cooked but stays white.
This one is not the tip but answer to why your Dosa was not getting the perfect brown. It was because you cooked on a non-stick and Dosa generally cooked on Iron skillet. Non-stick Dosa sides gets cripy and brown but not perfect whole crispy brown like the one in restaurant.

Tamarind you need to soak in water 10 or 15 min, and just squeeze it and only use water, you can remove pulp.

yes you can eat masala dosa for breakfast and dinner. In many south Indian restaurants, masala dosa is available all day long. So you you can order it in morning, afternoon, evening and night.

Just remember this, If you come to India visit restaurant CTR in Bengaluru and order "Benne Masala Dosa" Special instruction to chef "Add more red masala inside"... This is the best dosa in the whole India..

Usually we don't flip the dosa to the other side. Once the bottom is brown & cooked, we put the potato masala & then serve it like that.
Quick tip use fully flat pans to make dosa or that kind of food to get fully brown or nice golden. Do not flip whole just side flip
