New Gretsch Broadkaster Kit with Tony McClung

Good friend of the store (and phenomenal musician), Tony McClung, recently got a new Gretsch Broadkaster kit. He loves the kit and we love Tony, so we thought we'd ask him to come in to demo his kit, talk some drums and music and learn a little about Tony's musical background.
We have another Gretsch Broadkaster available in store, so if you like the sounds Tony was getting out of these drums, come in sometime and check them out in person!

Gretsch orange is just flat out better than normal orange

I grew up in Columbus and it was a great town to learn to play drums in. When I was in high school, I'd go watch Tony play every chance I got, and Columbus Percussion was a great resource with a lot of clinics, and a monthly drum circle, and especially Drum Daze. I bought my first real cymbal there almost 20 years ago with the discount I got with my Drum Daze stub, and I still play it today.

That amazing kick drum inlay just makes that kick sound better. That is my story and I'm sticking to it! :)

Fantastic video, drums, and player. A "small world" story- my love of Gretsch drums brought me to this video, but I have a connection with one of Tony's band mates, the great bassist Jeff Ciampa. In the late 70's Jeff and I played together in Johnstown PA. It's great to see these two great players united in the Columbus scene.

Really dug the higher tuning of 8x12 tom towards the end.

amazing sounding kit and snare! Could you add details about the mics used? Thanks!
We just use a 2 mic set up. A condenser overhead (above the player) and an Audix D6 mic about 30 inches out in front of the bass drum. The D6 is also angled down slightly to avoid extra tom sounds. Normally, the condenser mic we use is an Audix CX112B, but Tony brought in his own condenser for this recording. I'll touch base with him to get info on what that mic is and let you know. Thanks!
What heads and tuning range do you recommend for the 12 and 16?

Is that the kit’s matching snare, or something different.
The snare is a Noble & Cooley Alloy Classic 6x14.

Pity he didn’t demonstrate the Broadkaster snare...it would have made more sense.
Its great seeing older men put away their walking sticks and take up this instrument. I guess by hisplaying her has been at it for 2 or 3 years. Good effort
