I know that Adam stated he feels the USA Custom kit sounds the most full and "woody" of the three kits, but I must beg to differ. To my ears that crown goes to the Broadkaster kit. HUGE tom sound which brings to mind the classic sound of Purple/Sabbath...etc. Absolutely amazing!
Great job guys! THIS is how you present equipment in a shoot-out! That you guys work this hard to assemble quality videos shows how far you are willing to go to help your customers make an informed decision; I don't see any other shops going to these lengths. Just outstanding stuff; I love it! I was surprised at the results today. I went in to this thinking that the USAC or Brooklyn's had this competition nailed down. But it appears that at high volume and big sizes, thin is in! Winner: Broadkaster. Finally, good job Barrett! A strong showing for the rookie.
@@matthewpaluch777 I understand what your saying. These large sized kits definitely drive a rock or big band setting.I will say I wish I would have had my BEBOP Brooklyn kit when I was working small clubs playing country,or blues . I did get a chance to play gospel music at are church and they sounded ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. I don't know what it is about these drums, the tunning range is like nothing I have ever experienced from any other kit,and buddy I've own a lot of kits in my day. A mutual friend of ours ( Steve Maxwell said it best) for plyed drums I'll put them up against anything on the market. Those are pretty strong words coming from a man whom can buy, sell, and play the best of the best. Not just because he sells them.!!!
Great video! I own a USA Custom shell bank. I bought a 10", 12", 14", 16", 22" kit in 2019. I was so impressed that I added a 13" tom, 18" floor tom, as well as 18", 20", and 24" bass drums, which all came in this year. I have friends who own Broadcaster and Brooklyn kits, and they rock as well. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the USA made Gretsch kits!
Well I was 3 for 3 with Brooklyn for the first 3 configurations. For the large sizes the broadkaster wins.I will say that the 9x13 Brooklyn was my favorite, and the broadkaster snare was my favorite. THANK YOU DCP, I know this was a lot of work to go through. I mean they were even the same finish.!!! BY far the best comparison of gretsch USA drums to date. You guys have taken the guess work out of any drummers mind that is undecided what kit to purchase if there looking for THAT GREAT GRETSCH SOUND. Thanks again,Sincerely David.
As host of this amazing examination of these drums your observations are invaluable. I hope Shane is paying you enough because in addition to your insight your playing on the Jazz drum videos deserves a broader audience.
Another great vid guys! I gotta say that the bottom end on all three kits were very impressive with the tone and the sustain was incredible. BTW, get Barrett on more kits in the future! He's a true rocker!
Looking forward to getting my Turquoise Sparkle "Big Rock Kit" Gretsch Brooklyn's tomorrow from DCP :) Thanks to Shane and the guys for another great deal.
I bought Brooklyns from The Drum Center of Portsmouth this summer. They absolutely sing! Been playing for decades professionally, even sold my 1980's Gretsch power tom set to afford the Brooklyns. Believe me, modern drums are that much better and are the only way to go if you are going to be serious and play to get paid. Truth. And this place knows drums.
@@MrFunkyjive You really can't go wrong with any of these kits- they can all be tuned any way you want. I haven't found the limit yet. High, low, medium they just sing!
Late to the party as usual and even if no one is looking at this 2019 post anymore, I saw it today after clicking for an hour. The reason I came upon your video is because I was looking at Gretsch drum kits for pre-beginners (if there is such a kit). I have something to say. First, I am not the greatest or even a great musician but I'm willing to learn. Second, I DO know teaching/training/instruction. I am still a non-music subject educator who LOVES music. From my perspective as an educator/instructor... 1. the sequential planning for presenting the information was a 10, 2. for ANY of your market audiences, this video works, and 3. I knew I wanted a Gretsch but I wasn't sure. After this video? SOLD.
Loved these videos. Thank you for putting all of the time and effort into making them. I'd love to see you continue this concept with other brands. Might I suggest C&C or DW?
Thank you very much. I really enjoyed watching this. I play a USA Custom(with a 24“*14“ kick btw.) for more than 15 years now and it will always be my number one work horse, especially for recording situations. I recorded a lot of different music from rhythm&blues, funk, hip hop, tv commercials, classic rock, prog rock, even metal with it. You just need to mount the right heads and these drums will do the job 100%. I am going to buy a Renown for live purposes next year. Made that decision after watching your video about the 2k bucs kits. Greets from Germany!
This is one of your best comparison videos. Would really like to see you guys do one of these with the Ludwigs in these sizes. Or maybe with 26" kicks?
As usual, fantastic real life comparison. The USA overall gets the nod from me, but if I were building a truly custom kit, I’d go USA snare, floor tom, Brooklyn rack tom, and broadkaster kick in this configuration....but you just cannot go wrong with anyone of the USA made Gretsch Kits!!!
Listen to this vid with a real stereo that can crank out 120 decibels ....and it's Broadkaster all the way, that bass drum differentiates itself from the toms which sound similar between the kits.
Thank you to all the guys from DCP. The time y’all take to bring us the sounds and differences of all the kits is so helpful. The ability of someone looking for a new kit to play and replay your videos is priceless. Garrett, you make all the kits sound amazing !! Blessings to all of you, Brian
To my ears, Brooklyn is number 1, Broadcaster 2, and USA takes third. However, I’d be happy to have any one of these beautiful kits. They all sound fantastic.
Isn't that the truth, these guys really go to the extreme for the drum companies they represent and sell there products. That speaks volumes to people like us, the consumer.
I own a USA Custom and absolutely love it, especially in fusion/bop sizes and tunings. However, Broadkaster wins this round. If I were in the market for these sizes...
I'm actually surprised how much I liked the Brooklyn kit. I'm a vintage drum person (and I have a round badge Gretsch kit) and I came thinking the Broadkasters would be my favorite. I might have to re-think that. Could be the slight tuning differences. I felt like the Brooklyn was the best tune of the three for some reason.
Brooklyn is very underrated in comparison. I highly recommend them and buy from these guys, they know the products better than anyone. DCP are true drum geeks in the best sense.
Hey team can someone help me out? That little fill/ embellishment at 3:594:00. I always hear it, but does it have a name, or do links exist that break it down? Thanks in advance!!
That 24 broadkaster kick drum is absurd. I wonder if Gretsch does custom sets where you can pick and choose different series for each drum of the set. Like a brooklyn 13 a USA custom 16, and a Broadcaster 24, but all in the same finish.
It's kinda ironic that these huge Bonham style drums, are very similar in size to the big band jazz greats!! Just goes to show it's all about the drummer and not the kit!! 18" bass drums became popular for their portability!! Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa played some of the greatest sounding jazz ever on 26" bass drums!! In fact when I saw him perform a couple of times close to his death. I'm pretty sure he was using a reconditioned Slingerland kit with a 24" or 26" Bass!!
Agreed. Some where along the way jazz drums were marketed soley as bop mini size drums, and that couldn't be further from the foundation of what made Jazz great- Big Band.... monster drums that had superior acoustics and dynamic range for any music. Any of the rock drummer legends as Bonham, Ward etc would've been 1st to admit that.
