The Tama Superstar has a special place in my heart as it has been my dream kit since I started playing drums. I was able to buy one for reasonable price back in 2020. Its from the 80s and is the Super Maple finish. It came as a 12, 16, 22, but shortly after I bought a snare from a subscriber and was offered an 18" floor tom from another. A couple years later I had the opportunity to check out the Tama Superstar Classic, which draws inspiration from the vintage Superstars, but is a totally different kit. That brings us to now for Tama's 50th Anniversary where they released a limited number of Superstar Reissues, along with some snares and hardware. I would have loved to get a bell brass snare, but $4,000 is a bit steep for me lol. But the REAL question is, did Tama redeem themselves with this kit?!

I've had my Tama 8 piece for around 40 years now. Yes, I'm older lol 53 to be exact. Anyhow, I was Blessed enough to find a black kit, customized with oversized toms. They didn't realize that it was a bit a of a special kit, so I got it for a VERY GOOD price. I'll never get rid of them because they still sound great. Always have, always will. It's nice to see another Tama fan, in this world of DW drums!!! Nice kit and they sound great!🫡👍🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Yo , I'm a TAMA brother I've been blessed also to have my 9 piece cherry wine super Stars Xtras for 40 plus years. I also have a 9 piece imperial star in silver patina. These kits are apples and oranges but the still sound great for vintage kits made in Japan . super Stars Xtras 82, imperial star 81. I have a 8 piece hyper drive kit in Snow White Pearl..and a mini cocktail kit. DW is playing catch-up. It Begins and Ends with TAMA.
I hate DW drums. Just waaaay overpriced and hard to tune, in my opinion. However! I DO like Pacific Drums. Go figure. 😂

I own a 1982 Tama Superstar in 13, 14, 16, 18, 24. I have an array of snare drums, heads and cymbals I use for different assignments. Excellent kit that can sit in any type of musical situation.

I had a set with the aqua finish in 1981-84. 14x24, 9x13, 10x14, 12x15, 16x18, with 6 1/2” steel snare. They were BIG and beautiful. That color picked up stage lighting like no other color I’ve ever seen.

I would be super happy with either, but (believe it or not) I'd go with the modern kit. Too many sad experiences with vintage-quality hardware, especially telescoping bass drum spurs. Beautiful kit!

Oof. You can refit old MIJ drums though... which is what I did with my Starclassic kit, rather than buy a new Chinese one for twice the cost or more. I don't blame Tama for offshoring production to expand, but I won't buy any of their Chinese kits, personally.

I've got a '86 kit that has gone to heck and back and still sounds amazing. A buddy gave it to me years ago as "payment" for a video project I did for him. It wasn't until about a year ago when I realized what I had on my hands and started to clean it up and play it at bigger shows.
Glad you brought up Neil. Those drums sounded way better to me than the DWs he later changed to. By the way, both kits sound great!

I'm still playing on my extremely rare (ie. pathetically cared for) 1982 $199 Tama swingstar from high school. It's in a pitiful condition but I'm a Tama fan 100%! Thank you for this fantastic video. Keep on Tama'ing!

One of my favorite all time drum sounds were Tama Superstars on Accept's "Metal Heart" album in 1985. They also turned out to be my first concert that same year and they reproduced the album sound perfectly live.

another MAJOR difference is the old superstars were made from Japanese birch where the new ones are made with the current birch used for the star classic performers

I’ve got a 1986 Superstar in Cherry Wine Red that still sounds great. I bought it used from the original owner in 1990 and I still use it as my primary kit.

Fantastic comparison video! Thanks for doing that! There is one more difference between vintage and the reissue, the placement of the badges. I prefer where they placed the badges on the reissue. The way I have my vintage kit setup the badges face me rather than towards the audience. Not the biggest deal in the world. Still the best drums I've ever owned. :)
They both sound lovely, and I can't imagine being unhappy with either of them. To my ear, the modern kit sounded just a little sweeter. Maybe it was the 10"/12" combo that just rang a little truer to me. Also, my 1973 Ludwig Hollywood kit has a 13" rack tom. I've been playing and loving that kit for more than half of a century. That drum has a beautiful resonance that has only improved over the years, and melds nicely with the 16" floor tom.

Found an 83 Super Mahogany sized 13 14 18 24 complete with Zildjian A hats ride and crash. Set of Roto Toms and a 78 Ludwig Acrolite. $250 at a thrift store. Great set just not my sizes. Sold the Tama to a friend for $500 and I kept the rest.
Personally, even though I grew up in the era of 12", 13", 16", I never understood it. That's like going from middle C, to B, to G. 10", 12" 16" makes so much more sense to me melodically. You've gotta love Super Mahogany if you love Stewart Copeland. The Zenyatta Mondatta kit.
Why would you go from a 12 to 16 with nothing between? 10-12-14 is way better. If you're doing a 16, either do a 13 up or a 14 down and have 2 floors
Don't fool yourself. It has nothing to do with perfect incremental melodic difference for the reason modern Tama changed over. It has everything to do with profit margins ......less wood = less cost. Just like the badges stating China instead of Japan. Anyone who's played and restored drums will tell you that the modern China kit won't hold a candle in value to the old Japan kit in about 10 years from now. There's a reason for that too......drummers know quality versus cutting corners.

Great comparison video here. While there's definitely a modern sonic flair to the reissues, they still sound great and in line with the oldies. But man, that vintage Superstar kit is just a STUNNER. Love those tones.

I've have a full vintage Superstar kit in the satin mahogany finish with all concert toms. Love it! Vintage for me, always.

I had the vintage super mahogany kit with 24x14, 13x9, 14x10, 16x16, and 18x16. It was a BEAST of a kit. Sold it to a good friend of mine and she's very happy with it.

Back in the mid-to-late 1970s I loved TAMA Drums and Hardware!! I had the catalogues and dreamed that one day I would own a Superstar kit like Lenny White. I ended up with an Imperialstar with concert toms and I was happy AF!! If I had to choose between a vintage or anniversary, I’d choose the 50th anniversary. Great video by the way!! 🥁🥁

You have an impressive collection of drums/kits and, congratulations on that new acquisition. Having said that, I can say that I used to work at that company (for 14 years, made it up to Senior WH Manager before being "unceremoniously laid off) and, one year at a company named Thoroughbred Music before that company was bought out by SA. When I heard it was going out of business (the entire 100 YEAR OLD CHAIN) due to bankruptcy, I couldn't laugh hard enough (can you venture a guess why?)! When I left, I made a promise never to buy anything from them ever again or, to step foot in any of their locations. But, when I found out that their "ship had been sunk" I just had to see for myself. None of the people I worked with at both the store AND mail order center were there any more. Anyway, that's a great looking Tama kit you got, as well as your original. Enjoy them all!!!
Just got the exact same kit last month with the steel superstar reissue snare to go with it. I LOVE IT. Currently waiting for a good deal on an 8" or 16" tom, prices are crazy out there.

I bought a BB156 Bell Brass reissue. Came with same cards and red key. Words can't describe how good that snare is.
Completely different series but I didn't understand the difference between a vintage drum and modern until I bought a 1991 14"x 6.5" Tama Rockstar snare and holy crap yeah there's a difference
I would prefer the vintage kit, but I always prefer vintage stuff. I remember going to Guitar Center with my buddy and his dad in the mid 1980s and we came home with a brand new power Tom version of the Superstars.
I had that catalog with Billy Cobham in it. I stared at it for hours and hours and hours! I might even still have it buried in a box somewhere. Another great video!
I found an 83 super mahogany about a year after your last superstar video came out for 400 bucks in 13,16,22 sizing. Love that kit!!

I love your passion for Tama. Definitely make me appreciate the brand. Especially from the vintage aspect. They’re not really in the conversation when it comes to vintage drums. I wish I would have kept this vintage set that was 24,13,14,18 Tama. In that clear over maple color. I sold it cheap. Didn’t know what I had.
First Tama set I had ever seen was at sam ash when I was just a 9 year old kid back in 1979. It was A gigantic double bass Imperial star set In silver pearl😱 That kit was real eye candy!

I have a small Tama collection - my Tama "Eras" Collection. They're the best brand for the money, as far as I'm concerned. I have a 1963 Stewart 4 piece kit (made in the Star factory in Japan, one of the MIJ stencil kits, and sold with the Stewart badge - of course, Star became Tama not very long after); a 1981 Imperial Star kit, MIJ with the zola coat - double kick kit, with 10, 12, 13, 14 rack toms and the 16 floor tom - the iconic sound of classic rock! and the original snare that came with; a 1993 Rock Star kit, luan shells but with the painted interiors for sound control (black) - a relatively inexpensive kit, but perfect sound for punk - also with the original snare; a 2002 Art Star Custom - not the cool colors the earlier Granstars came in, unfortunately, but I might re-wrap; a 2013 Super Star Hyperdrive kit (paired this with a Ludwig Black Magic, as it didn't come with a snare - my only non-Tama drum, but I love this snare); and just got the new 50th Anniversary Starclassic Mirage kit, with the matching snare. The only thing I'm missing is something from circa 1973 to have something for every decade :D
I think they nailed it, though I'm also a Tama guy, so I'm probably biased. I'd be happy with either kit, but would lean toward the new one just because older hardware tends to be less reliable over time.

I'd like to see you explore old vs new trend (but going back to old?) Thick shells vs thin (that are in definite fashion now and for some time). @drumdotpizza had an interesting video on old Sonor catalogue write ups how the best designed drum (G series snares from Tama?) have thick shells that do not absorb/resist drum head vibration - the goal is for shells to be "passive", which results in way more sustain - all energy is passed to vibrating heads... yet modern marketing of old style thin drums "sells" the consumer the opposite, if you will - shell resonance - if shell is vibrating, it is quickly sucking and killing energy from the stroke, etc. which implies a longer more pleasing sound... but the 80's thick shells maybe the truer answer to "resonance"?
So on my big blue imperial star, I just picked up a 10 and 14. The 10 is a Swingstar but swingatarw were the same Luna shells.

I have just bought a vintage tama superstar classic Maple MIJ 9 piece with double bass and matching snare in Coral Reef Blue.
When a local theater was playing Tron Legacy the “T” fell off the sign so I saw the name Ron Legacy for almost a month. It would have been a cool stage name / porn name as well.

They really ought to increase the offerings in this line. I bet lots of people would want them. All the sound tests I’ve heard have been great.
Still waiting for a chance to get the late 70s re-ringed model to replicate Neil Peart's kit as his had re-rings and thin shells (Artstar prototype, but used the same look as the Superstars at the time and used standard sizes than Xtra depth)!
I have been a fan of superstar forever, as my two favorite drummers Neil Peart and Stewart Copeland both played tama when I started playing drums in 1983 (Of course I realized later that Stewart was playing imperialstar but still). Both kits sound amazing but I’m leaning toward the new. That bearing edge suits my ear better. I wish they offered components and I’m hopeful that if enough people buy them and love them, they will.
They sounded surprisingly similar to me, except for the snare of course. I think I'd be happy playing either one.

It would be interesting to see you compare your modern DW's against an early 2000's "Made in Mexico" Pacific CX kit. The Mexican CX's use genuine DW shells but they fly under the radar and thus are super cheap (
I've had a hard journey with Tama, i had Starclassics in Maple, Birch and Birch/Bubinga and I didn't like any of them. But a few days ago I got the chance to play on a real vintage Superstar and i loved it. Based on your Video, I would choose the modern one, but that's probably due to the sizes. However, I'm not a Tama fan when it comes to drums, but i love, no I adore their hardware! They're so close to Yamaha with build quality, for a much lover price. (at least here in Austria) So shout out to Tama.
You should try 10/13/16 it was all the rage in the late 80’s for tom separation. Anton Fig used that setup on his Yamaha 8000 series kit.

Both kits sound great! I think I'd probably rather play the new one because of the sizes and kick drum spurs. And against popular opinion, I like new stuff. Only problem is that now I want one too. Keep up the awesome videos! 🥁❤️
