Today we are featuring our friend and local Columbus musician, Tony McClung, on a new Vintage Build Gretsch Broadkaster kit. Sizes are 14x22 bass, 9x13 mounted tom, 16x16 floor tom. The shells and hoops are the classic Broadkaster maple/poplar/maple shell and 302 stick chopper hoops, but this kit features some of the vintage build hardware options available in the Gretsch Broadkaster line. It has a vintage style rail mount, vintage bass drum spurs, vinatage floor tom legs and leg brackets, and all of the drums have internal mufflers for the top and bottom heads. We also feature a mix of Zildjian A Avedis cymbals and K Cluster Crashes. Rounding out the set up we have (one of Tony's favorite) a Ludwig 6.5x14 Smooth Copper Phonic snare drum.
    Also Featured:
Audix D6 Dynamic Microphone (in front of bass drum):

The decay on that 20 inch crash is so pleasing.

I know this is all about the kit, but that snare sounds fantastic. Such a nice cut-through-the-mix crack.

Curious on head choices or if they are factory?

That first groove is from Dave Grohl (Soundcity CD) song Mantra. Am I right? :p

It seems like there is no mic in front of the BD as mentioned in the description. From the stand behind Tony, it looks like an overhead.
Could you detail that overhead mic please?

There is an Audix D6 mic about 30" out in front of the bass drum as well as an Audix CX112B up about 30" above Tony's head.

Hey fellas, why aren't you using the tom mount? Don't trust it?

Mostly just personal preference. There are some limits for positioning with the mount. This is the original Gretsch design for the reissue rail mount. They have since added some knurling to the mount to make it a bit 'more trustable'...a welcome improvement!
