Just to help people out, as I can see some people are confused about it. With the part about Arthur keeping both eyes open when aiming down a sight is a sign of being an experienced gunslinger, is in fact very true. If you close one eye, you lose approximately 45% of your peripheral vision. This is the same with both scoped weapons and iron sight. Now, some may think that losing that 45% can't be too bad as you're already aiming at your target, but you can't be any further from being right. Experienced marksmen will keep both eyes open until they're about to shoot in which they (may) close the eye they aren't using to aim down sight with to better help with taking a shot, then open that other eye again, this is because you need to see not just your target, but what's behind your target, around your target, and there are a few atmospheric conditions that you normally need to take into consideration depending on the distance of said target. If you were in a forest per-se, and you know this forest has mountain lions in them (only speaking hypothetical), and you were about to shoot one before it gets you, would you keep both eyes open to see if there's another mountain lion coming to get you, or close one eye to focus on that singular mountain lion? If you say focus on the singular mountain lion, you aren't going back home.
Hopefully this helps some people with their confusion. If people want to know my experience with firearms, I grew up around guns on a farm, hunted things, received police training and still shoot today.

Unsure if been commented on before, but the "john/arthur eyes open/closed when aiming" thing may be due to what's called 'eye dominance'. Arthur may be right handed and right eye dominant, whereas John may be right handed but left eye dominant (just means he automatically focuses using his left eye). That would explain why John closes his left eye when rifle shooting (if I shoot a right handed rifle stock I do this). Its a well known fact that experienced hunters/riflemen keep both eyes open when shooting to keep peripheral vision, but *only* if their eye dominance/dominant hand match etc

These were all super cool (as I expect from your videos). The only one I don't agree with is the blind left eye; it usually depends on the shooter and how they were trained as to whether they close or keep both eyes open whilst aiming. It's usually more common I'd say to close one eye.

    • @WisdomThumbs
      @WisdomThumbs ปีที่แล้ว +10

It’s situational and depends on the time period. Modern training emphasizes having both eyes open, but it takes work to get used to that due to the natural inclination toward tunnel vision. And of course, keeping one eye closed can also be the result of the sun’s position, or a bruise, or blood and sweat.

@@cdogthehedgehog6923 Ah, but you're missing one crucial detail: if you grow up shooting, *like someone on the frontier,* the flinching is trained out of you in childhood. That's why I started with "it's situational and depends on the time period and region." It's tempting to assign mechanistic explanations to things when we know a little, but having grown up on a wilderness farm, survived getting blown up a couple times, and studied oldtimers from a variety of professions, let me tell you... There are no absolutes here.
And in the late 1800s, it was noted by professional lawmen and many eyewitnesses that people who were confident with guns often shot with one eye closed, even if it was their first shootout, because brushes with death came at you often from an early age. That's not even counting the soldiers, because different units trained differently for different purposes.

To be honest, this theory goes way back to 2010. John, in the first game, had a visible lazy eye and also closed his left eye to aim. People said he was blind in one eye. A lazy eye can also be seen as some damage taken in the eye, or even a glass eye. Anyways, the same was being said about Johnny Klebitz so maybe the fans have a fetish or something idk 🤣🤣

If he was blinded in his left eye and they patched up his right one due to the scars, he’d be blind all through the chapter but we clearly see him looking at Arthur, Abigail, Jack, and Dutch when he speaks to them. It’s likely as time progressed Johns eyesight got worse by the time rdr1 rolls around but he’d have a weak eye, not a blind one. A weak eye is more plausible due to all the damage it’s been through plus working on the bright sun damn near every day too

Great video, RedsDeadBaby! I can see you put actual effort into this one. Two criticisms that I have is that John being blind in his left eye is entirely untrue. John means "getting his eye back" metaphorically as in getting his precision back. The Deadly Assassin outfit is just a pre-order bonus outfit that looks cool. The visually injured eye is just popped blood vessels, not serious. The closed eye while aiming is just because he isn't using it at that current moment so he closes it for better precision. And the Rachael named after his daughter thing is a theory, not a fact like the title says. I like that you included some lesser known facts on this video. Again, good job.
    Here are some additional notes:
John not "yah-ing" his horse while riding is due to a bug with the game files, a modder named Daan found this and relayed it to me after I pointed it out. (The dialogue in the files exists, but due to an accident they made in the script for replacing the files with updated ones, it doesn't work.)
John using Arthur's vomiting sounds is obviously a bug, he has his own in the game files.
RDR1 John has grey eyes, whereas RDR2 John has blue eyes. You can see this in the two games' texture files.
Old Boy is not directly the same as the War Horse from RDR1 but it is very obviously inspired.

If John was blind in his left eye he wouldn't need to close it. If however his vision was impaired in that eye, he might in order to give a clear image when aiming.
I suspect the eye colour and body/ face shape changes are due to the fact R* just used Arthur's body. And stuck John's skin on. Why they made this change when they already had a presumably working model in version 1.00, is baffling.
John doesn't take to the horses in the way Arthur does. He just doesn't seem all that caring towards his steed and, well, the feeling is obviously mutual. This is probably just my perception of it, because surely R* didn't program that in ... or did they? I've never had a really reliable horse with John, however I've had two fantastic bombproof ones and several others who were pretty good with Arthur.

aiming with both eyes open gives greater field of view and is taught by militaries for clearing rooms due to the greater field of view given. while aiming with one eye is more of a "target" way to aim, giving greater accuracy at range.

It's the scope, one eye see far ahead through a lense, the other eye do not and that is a massive disparity in depth for both eyes at once and that is problematic as it mess with your depth perception. Take a binocular to your right eye and you understand haha, plus it's Generally better with one eye closed with scope, but long range with Iron sight and red dot with both eyes open works just fine, because the depth perception helps. This way you can also put on the lense protector on the front of the red dot scope at night, having both eyes open, like blocking your one eye with your hand at a certain distance from your face you can see through it, it's the same effect with the red dot and this help keeping you concealed in short distance shooting position in the dark, because the red dot lights up as a beacon.

I think it’s kinda cool that Arthur’s dead eye sounds like he is taking in the sounds around him more; like he is processing all the feed his brain receives to make the predicted shot to land in dead eye, whilst John’s sounds more like a time slowing, locked-in perspective of just focusing purely on the gunfire and positioning of his enemies; perhaps meaning there are different types or ‘stances’ for dead eye? I’m probably just overthinking it, but it would be cool, because then assuming someone like Micah who is presumed to have dead eye, I wonder what his would be like?

5:07 "John aims with his left eye closed (possibly due to his blindness)"
If John was really blind in his left eye, he wouldn't feel the need to close it while aiming. Marksmen often close one eye so that the vision from that eye doesn't interfere with aiming down the sights. If the eye was blind, closing it wouldn't make a difference, so he wouldn't bother.

    • @birdsteak9267

No, you use both eyes on a Rifle too, unless it's scooped for sniping. Closing the one eye with a scope makes it easy to focus through the tube, but with a Iron sight or red dot, it's two and you get two advantages, 180° vision and a better aim.

@@Xavier28200 So you look through a 10x fixed scope with two eyes open when it's actually more convenient to have a complete focus through the shooting eye? It's one thing to have both eyes open with a Red Dot aimpoint or a Iron sight, it provides an advantage then to have two eyes opem, but with a Scope with optical zoom, having both eyes open is an disadvantage, the other eye is completely useless and if anything, it's not good for your focus to have such a disparity. There is a reason why Snipers don't have two eyes open for sniping in optical zoom. But if it works for you, well ok, but in general that is not a standard with a Scope.

@@Xavier28200 That might be true, it ahould be easy if it's not magnified glass, I only had issues with that with thinner more primitive types of scopes, the edges get magnified by slight head movements and it can be a pain in the head to lock oneself into a perfect vision, granted was a lot more common back then, in general one can chose be flexible with it depending on what you deem necessary before a shot.

Being blind doesn’t have much to do with him shooting how John does. As someone who shoots with my left eye closed (dominant righty) some people can shoot with both eyes open or one closed. For me it helps me focus better on a target instead of being a blurred mix of two targets.
