Thanks for the Review ! I was really waiting for this kind of review on Ursa mini 4.6k. And yes we Indian love films so much and love to gather and see it shooting !! hahaha
Great review Tom! I just downloaded your UM4.6k film to expanded range video LUT and its fantastic! No more washed out film log picture and No more crushed blacks or blown out highlights from the standard REC709! THANKS!
Hello Tom, first I want to thank you for sharing filmmaking tips and tuts, I find them very helpful. However, I'd like to request that you please share a video tutorial on the BlackMagic URSA mini settings you used for the filming of 'ZIA' and its grading tutorial as well. Thanks
Yeah especially if you have a rig to stabilize it too. I guess it would only be a problem in an intense action shot but it still looks great. My buddy at film school has the 4k version and we love it. Been using it for months now and I have been thinking about getting the 4.6. Thanks for the review Tom.
Thanks for being there, Tom and I am glad to follow every post you make. A bit about me: I am a narrative feature filmmaker, currently shooting on the Sony FS100, and also edit my work myself on FCPX. So ease is of paramount importance. I intend to start shooting my work in 4K. I don't like to sync all audio in post, so would need recorded material to contain both video and audio. You now have used extensively both the Panasonic GH4 and Blackmagic Ursa mini 4.6K. Knowing what you know now (plus the fact GH5 debuts next year), which would you advise I get? Any other preferences? Thank you, bruver.
Great review! I'm really looking forward to the follow up review of the ND Filters too. Also, I would love to get a copy of the LUT you mention in the review (I signed up for the newsletter, but didn't find a link to it in there). Thanks.
Great review, matches my thoughts exactly! I thought the camera would have more negatives than it has. Just surprised about how great everything works. LCD usable outside, great resolution also. So simple to get consistent exposure with false color. Skin tones looks fantastic without any work. Also i noticed that when working in mixed lighting conditions the camera handles this so well, much better than the C100mk2 I had before. And the codecs are awesome, often do simple corp jobs with Prores LT and even that looks fantastic! Also the negatives you mentioned, some of them aren't really negatives, like ND - much better to control what ND you wan't instead of having fixed ND strengths. I use it with a Hoya IR cut + Genustech Fader ND - great combo for situations where you need to work fast. Later I will look into getting the matte box you have together with Format Hitech filters.
Excellent review - thanks so much for your contributions to the community, Tom! I did a review of the 4K in similar depth, and was great to compare with yours of the 4.6K.
Great job Tom, I would like to thank you, I just bought my first camera after several time of waiting a good product for cheap budget. You made me push to the final choice witch is an ursa mini. I am really interrested about your future video about Nd filters witch is the only issue I see on this camera for now. You covered really every aspect someone like me can ask to himself about this camera and you found all the cheapest solutions. Again, thank you !
excellent review Tom, as far as night shots..was noise ever an issue with the camera? I hope a smaller version of the camera is released in the future.
Great review Tom :) and yes shooting movies in India is tough job. People here are very curious when they see any movie shoots or other cinema related stuffs. I hope you had a great experience shooting films in India. :)
cfast cards are becoming the new standard for video cameras so they will keep getting cheaper every year. i think there is enough space on the ursa mini, where BM could also fit in a slot for an ssd.
Hello Tom, Thank you for such great info. Just purchased your LUT packs, going to try them out. I am real beginner in this field, lots to learn and a long way to go.
Tom outstanding once again, i love your tutorials as always. I have purchased this camera on ebay (second hand), my question to you is which two lens would i get or which advise would you give for someone like me or many others who are just starting up with cinematography or music video etc.. what kind of lenses to get to put me in a whole another level. Thanks😊😊
Great video Tom... could you please make a video about chromakeying with this camera comparing only the PRORES CODECS from 444 to 422. I think it would help a lot of people in the CG department which you already forgot about and specially the one that made me subscribe to your channel. Thanks in advance.
Nice current video. Now the price on the camera is relatively decent. Of course you did add a ton of gear to make it a working camera... battery, Lampart FF and handle etc... think you have a zacuto FF and hand grip as well....so there is a fair bit of customization needed before you can go out and shoot........ I'll go out on a limb and say the 15 stops of dynamic range is a valid number if you are using a LOG setting... maybe.. Not even sure the Alexa has that much dynamic range. Great point about the rolling shutter... better to have the slightest amount of wobbliness than loose any dynamic range. Makes great sense. This seems like a nicely designed camera and even weight wise think it would be pretty light even fully kitted out ... did you weight it in fully combat mode? Great deal that it includes DaVinci Resolve. These cameras have a great deal of criticism online... mostly due to delivery issues which is common for BM... also challenging support system.... also typical considering the company is in Australia. But oddly enough, the camera is on back order and obviously quite in demand. Plus, having met Grant numerous times ... from day one he released Decklink SP in a 20x20 booth.... his is guy driven to succeed and produce great products. Any issues that are encountered are guaranteed to be solved .. just the kind of guy he is. As long as the camera is robust enough to withstand daily use then I think it is a great choice. The problems associated with this camera are nothing out of the ordinary... anyone who has every worked with RED knows the challenges ... But as usual I would never buy first generation anything and I think this camera is on its second iteration so it should be good to go.
+Tom Antos you are so right u can't just setup a normal DSLR with a tripod, u draw a lot of attention even for normal photography , especially sometimes u get questioned by officials and even no drones allowed ! did u use any drone shots for the film ?
Pieter Batenburg The simplest explanation I can give is pan very fast in your DSLR. Then Pan very fast in a cinema camera with global shutter. in the playback, pause mid frame. Global shutter video will not tilt the vertical lines (for example a light pole or the endge of a house). While Rolling shutter will tilt.
enjoyed the review, thank you. Please do one on the URSA Mini Pro. Also does the Ursa Mini downsample the 4k footage in camera to record 2k DCI, or is it windowed? Not slow-mo just normal shooting. Deciding between UMP and Canon C300 mkii
Great video as always.. Now that you've had the camera for awhile have you run into any issues (corrupt files or cards, overheating, etc). Any issues when you shoot with it for a long day? Thanks I love the camera but reliability on jobs for clients has me hesitant from purchasing one. I used to Sony type reliability. Thanks!
shooting in RAW on the FS5 yes, shooting in XAVC it produces antialiasing issues in slowmotion also it doesn't have the same color depth so once you grade the image will fall apart faster than the RAW video
Thanks for showing us the real world exprience of the camera. I saw you in the video use gimble and gimble support with vest, what brand and model are they? and how good are they with this camera?
How does it compare to the Sony FS7, Tom? I know this camera looks cheaper on paper, but once you've added all the needed extras as well as upgrading your computer to handle the files & format, it starts to become rather expensive.
It's still a lot cheaper than the FS7. To edit it's actually easier and requires a less powerful computer then the Sony FS7. Problem with FS7 is that it uses a compressed video file that takes a lot of computing power to decode it.
Thank you, Tom. Extremely helpful info. I started watching a couple hours ago. Had to stop in the middle and come back. Looks like you reposted. Was there a problem with the original? should I rewatch the first half?
Tom, how did you get your start in filming? The path I'm currently on is simply being behind my rig whenever possible, practicing filming and editing. I simply wanted to know if you had advice on what was most helpful in your journey to jump to the next level.
hi Tom, thanks for your tutorials. but can you do, some kind of real examples about the rolling shutter, in my opinion is a biggest problem of the camera, and i look from the post production department, and my question is, will the rolling shutter influence the green screen shooting, i understand i will have the 4:4:4 information in raw but if i need to shoot some fast motion will it affect the green screen recording, for example.... Thanks..
Thanks for this great review...but what is your opinion about the new upcoming Kinefinity Terra 5/6K and overall what do you think about Kinefinity color science?I know you had or still have one of the older models.
Thank you,Tom,i think that there is no need for transcode anymore but maybe i am wrong,i just wanted to know if Kine feels like real cinema camera and can we compare it to say RED or BMD URSA for example.
about this question ,i want to konw too. i just sent back my ursa mini 4.6K,because when i shot with 14mm canon lens,it‘s still have mengenta problem。other lens have not。
陈宗横 Wow,this is very brave decision,i think that it is not worth sending back such a great camera just because of the tint issue with particular lens..
Dear Tom. A huge Thank Y O U !! I was surfing the web for accurate info about the URSA mini and i literally got lost in the numbers... until i finally i found your real world test and opinion about this little wonder cam. I am learning so much and I have to say you really made up my mind and now the decission of what camera should i buy is narrowed to 2: URSA mini 4k or 4.6 versions. I am on a tight budget that implies not only a camera but also investing in my editing platform (I am switching from HD to 4k here...). Key question is: do you think there is such a huge quality difference btween both sensors to justify the extra 2 grand? Thanks in advance!!
The problem with the blacks turning red, is actually an IR problem. A video from "myvideoversion" here on youtube explains it very well. Not an ND problem though!
Which cameras is better Gh5,Gh4 or Ursa mini in low light situations? If Both of the camera is the same low light performance, I will buy Ursa mini 4.6k soon.
Hi Tom I see you review some pretty nice and experience cinematography equipment. Do you buy, rent, finance or do companies lend it to you. Just wondering
Tom, I signed up for your newsletter and received your three LUTs, but where can I find the LUT you created for the URSA Mini 4.6? I am very interested in loading it into my camera and trying it over the included LUT.
I just received/checked your newsletter and there is no link at the bottom of the email for your in-camera LUT you created for the URSA 4.6k. I only see the link of the 3 LUTS (thanks for that). Can you please let us know another way to get that particular LUT?
rudystudios yes those luts where released on my newsletter when the video was released which is why it's no longer available through there but you can now find it on the download page of my website
Hey Tom what lenses would fit this camera . I am more into dslrs that too the entry level ones but i dream to shoot a short film with such a cam .Can you suggest the lenses that would fit then i can rent them .I need one wide, one zoom ,one prime lense (equivalent to 18-55mm,55-250,50mm f1.8 eos lenses)
Great Video Tom I'm really interested in this camera and all the equipment, but computer you think has the most space or storage to hold the average files from footage , so which computer you you use or would use for this camera ?
TomAntosFilms Thanks a lot Tom This that video was very helpful . And in your opinion which camera would you buy that has the best cinematic look that you have used to shoot Short films under $6,000 if you had to choose
I don't know how anyone would rate this camera as GOOD when 90% of the shots with the subject made a slight quick moved there are slight blurred or stuttered images it produces. Please look at the host and the sample clips carefully. You really don't see this in Olympus 4k Em1 MII or Gh5 nor Sony a7s MII/a9 and other. This is what happened with Angle Shutter Speed camera.
The negatives are not really negatives when you look at what type of camera this is. Arri Amira uses CFAST cards and weighs a ton, granted it has built in ND filters, but REDs have to be build up as well and don't have ND filters and also cost a ton of money. Po' boy Alexa, hell yeah! From what I'm seeing there are no negatives. If you gonna drop 5 g's on a camera then it's a given to drop some more for media and accessories and you probably already know how to light your scene.
Hi Tom, thank you very much for this video! Was very helpful! We are planing to shoot a feature film with the Ursa 4.6 as well and I have some questions... What storage solution (on the editing machine) would you recommend and how many terabytes space are necessary for editing a feature film? I know it depends also in the format you are shooting. In what format did you recorded your feature film?
As a film maker would you recommend you are using EF mount on the Ursa mini as opposed to PL? I'm getting ready to buy this camera mainly for cinema / aerial work but not sure which mount to go with. Granted the PL cost a bit more but I am just curious as to why it seems you went with EF
Hello Tom thanks very much for the great work and tips. I need your advice. I am planning on buying a new Ursa mini 4.6k here in the UK by end of May 2018 which is on a killer sale offer but for the pl mount version as pl lenses seem to be more expensive and people buy more of the ef versions like yours due to the vast and cheaper lens options. I can only find Samyang Xeen 's and slr magic both in pl mount in the UK which are still expensive and Xeens give a greenish tinge and slr magic seems just okay hence now I am thinking to buy this camera with ef mount which is £1200 more (: and get sigma art 18-35 1.8 to begin with. My main interest is feature films for which I want to get this camera. Are Xeens and slr magic really worth? Kindly advice which mount would be better and why. I have very tight budget though. Would you still buy ursa mini 4.6k in mid 2018. BMPCC 4K is coming but still far. Thanks very much for your support. Regards.
Tom Antos Hello and thanks very much for your kind reply. My heart is with UMP and brains with c200 and I have watched many comparison videos between UMP and c200 and read forums and now fs5 ii is coming up as well but then there were complaints about FS5 mark 1's af and low light issues I think. I really like the UMP and that it comes complete as a pro kit and mainly due to its special film like look and codecs and ssd recording etc. I'll be using either of these cameras for events as well as for feature films and music videos and I have also preordered the upcoming BMPCC 4K which now I will think about more than twice unless can justify it as a b cam if required. I believe c200 still don't have 10 bit 422 internally but I like it's build quality and size mainly it's low light and autofocusing capabilities but might not need them so much over UMP's features. For price, features etc etc I still think UMP might be better but then I need your advice as you are a pro in filmmaking with lots of experience with BMD. Out of these 3 and others, for feature films and events which one would you buy and why? Thanks again very much for your time. Much appreciated. Regards
I doubt this camera has a dynamic range of 15 stops. Arri lists their ALEV III sensor at "14+ stops over the entire sensitivity range from EI 160 to EI 3200 as measured with the ARRI Dynamic Range Test Chart (DRTC-1)." I haven't seen any independent tests evaluating the latitude of the ursa mini in a scientific way. But too my eye, there is no way it tops the 14+ stop ALEV III sensor or even comes close. I would guess its about 13ish stops on the scale that Arri uses.
I have seen one test on youtube that disproves this. That is why I am saying Ursa has ""12-13ish" stops on the scale that Arri uses." (ARRI Dynamic Range Test Chart (DRTC-1) Blackmagic is either using a different scale to calculate and/or is exaggerating their flagship sensor's dynamic range. If you see the test conducted by Slanted Lens (youtube/watch?v=Rk7ZFx7j8f8) at 6:45 seconds they show Ursa clipping at +4 2/3 stops over, while Alexa had not began to clip at +5 stops. They also show at 10:00 that the Alexa out performs the Ursa in under exposure as well. They did not show the entire range of over and under exposures on either camera (because of operator errors?) so we can not make our own assessment. Either way, when you get into the higher and lower exposures the Ursa color accuracy decreases and their is an introduction of fixed pattern noise which some users might say is unusable, further reducing the *usable dynamic range.* I was one of the early people to receive an Ursa Mini and I have clocked a lot of hours on mine. I have also used Arri and Varicam which both rate their sensors at 14+ stops. I trust that Arri and Panasonic who have been making cameras for years, are both being forthright. Perhaps they are being conservative, and their sensors has 17 or 18 stops if BMD has 15. Cheers :)
Thx for the respons, Tom. Yeah, the first 6K's are just now starting to reach chinese customers, 5K is set to arrive at years end. Good to know that you're on top of things tho :) Keep up the good work, love your channel. :)
I have a fairly powerful system, but I find REDCODE to run much better (without transcoding or optimizing footage) in Davinci 12.5 than RAW DNG. What is your experience on that?
It does. Trust me. I had a 4.6K - for about 4 days - returned for horrid magenta color casts. Not to mention - it was a render nightmare for "RAW". Our REDs have never been an issue. We ended up going with a RAVEN for our B camera and an Epic W for an A. :-) Red RAW even runs smoothly on our Macbook Pro at low debayer settings. The Ursa Mini 4.6K - did not.
Tom Antos I'm glad, at least, Blackmagic got their 4.6k looking better :-) Problem was - for early adapters like my studio - after a 10 month wait and then getting a faulty product - they have lost some if their market share. Keep doing the good work, sir!
Thanks for taking the time to put this together! I am considering buying it and this pushes me closer to pulling the trigger. Loved your grading, too.
More information than I was hoping for but the type of review that makes it worth watching.
This is the best Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4.6k review hands down.
Thnx!!!!
it really is!!!!!!! kudos bro!!!!
Thanks for the Review ! I was really waiting for this kind of review on Ursa mini 4.6k. And yes we Indian love films so much and love to gather and see it shooting !! hahaha
Thanks! Yes I noticed that in India people love films more than in any other part of the world I think :)
the motorcycle panning looked way better than expected. that's awesome.
Great review Tom! I just downloaded your UM4.6k film to expanded range video LUT and its fantastic! No more washed out film log picture and No more crushed blacks or blown out highlights from the standard REC709! THANKS!
Tom Antos has the most understandable videos for amateurs like me
Impressive Tom! The footage looks very filmic. Congrats!
Thnx!
Hello Tom, first I want to thank you for sharing filmmaking tips and tuts, I find them very helpful. However, I'd like to request that you please share a video tutorial on the BlackMagic URSA mini settings you used for the filming of 'ZIA' and its grading tutorial as well. Thanks
These URSA Mini videos have been excellent, thanks for making them.
You are welcome Richard
Thorough review, nicely done, Tom!
It's a great camera. Love the dynamic range but I just wish it had global shutter like the 4k version.
It would be great in those rare occasions when doing flash photography but otherwise you can't see the rolling shutter effect.
Yeah especially if you have a rig to stabilize it too. I guess it would only be a problem in an intense action shot but it still looks great. My buddy at film school has the 4k version and we love it. Been using it for months now and I have been thinking about getting the 4.6. Thanks for the review Tom.
Harut Hajin it's the rodelink I did a review of before
Love the footage and the colors, so spectacularly nice.... I just wish there was a URSA nano ;) As i am planning filming a documentary in India.
Please make the video about the battery types and mounts

use an IR Cut filter to remvoe the blacks going red when using nds
I think it's time to move to an URSA Mini from my GH4's. Thanks for this well done video, Tom. Great info and delivered just perfectly.
Very good video buddy. I just got my ursa mini 4.6k and just experimenting at the moment. I really love this camera
Great review! I'm really looking forward to the follow up review of the ND Filters too. Also, I would love to get a copy of the LUT you mention in the review (I signed up for the newsletter, but didn't find a link to it in there). Thanks.
Chris Messineo you will get an email in a few days with a download link
Cool, thanks!
I had the same question, I would love to use it!
Has this gone out - I haven't seen anything?

Great Review Tom. It's a shame that Blackmagic didn't include the Global Shutter option in the final product.
What is a global shutter?
Here' this will clear everything www.red.com/learn/red-101/global-rolling-shutter
Thanks. That would be a big advantage for everything moving
Pieter Batenburg The simplest explanation I can give is pan very fast in your DSLR. Then Pan very fast in a cinema camera with global shutter. in the playback, pause mid frame. Why didn't you say the FS7 i think it would be a great camera to compare to this camera. Whats your thoughts about that Tom?
Michael Mystro Pierce the fs7 costs significantly more than this camera, therefore it would not be a fair comparison
Yeah i just asked because i know he was looking at the FS7 but was wondering what happen and yes i agree it's a bit more.
A test came out that the XAVC looked the same as Raw to Prores. I disagree that you can't get the same great image out of the FS5. I did
shooting in RAW on the FS5 yes, shooting in XAVC it produces antialiasing issues in slowmotion also it doesn't have the same color depth so once you grade the image will fall apart faster than the RAW video
Thanks for showing us the real world exprience of the camera. I saw you in the video use gimble and gimble support with vest, what brand and model are they? and how good are they with this camera?
I used different gimbals and steadicams... I will do a follow up video showing what kind of results you can get with what.
Thanks in advance. Tom

In real life working days!! Is a very honest pro review!! Thanks for your experiences !! I love your work an your reviews
Ciao Paolo Corino

Thanks in advance!!
Very good Review Tom! i buidt up my ursa mini system after your suggestions :)
ok Tom - it's Jan 2017 - How's the real-world experience of the Mini 4.6 going? May we have an update? Happy New Year!
Well done review, thank you! Would love to use one of these some day.
Sir which movie you shooted in india ?
The problem with the blacks turning red, is actually an IR problem. A video from "myvideoversion" here on youtube explains it very well. Not an ND problem though!
Hey Tom, what tripod are you using in India? Is it a manfrotto?
Which cameras is better Gh5,Gh4 or Ursa mini in low light situations? If Both of the camera is the same low light performance, I will buy Ursa mini 4.6k soon.
Great Review, And an incredible camera!
Hi Tom I see you review some pretty nice and experience cinematography equipment. Do you buy, rent, finance or do companies lend it to you. Just wondering
awesome! thanks Tom. Looking forwards to your video about ND filters vs. IR pollution video. Signed up to your newsletter.
iam in love with your tutorials. approximately your Ursa setup costed?
Thnx. My current one has even more stuff. I'm doing a new video about the updates. It's cost me all in $9600
Tom Antos thanks for replying. do you have a toturial comparing Ursa and eva1?
Tom,
I signed up for your newsletter and received your three LUTs, but where can I find the LUT you created for the URSA Mini 4.6? I am very interested in loading it into my camera and trying it over the included LUT.
For the the newsletter which comes out every Thursday. At the bottom will be a link to the LUT for the ursa mini 4.6k
Sir wich lences is used for black magic sir piz tell that for profesinol
Hi Tom! What the difference between the 4.6 (5k$) and the 4k (3K$)
GOD BLESS YOU Tom, your a real blessing love your work
amateur question -- i have a BMPCC, what's the difference between URSA Raw and BMPCC Raw? besides three stops of dynamic range.
i have looked at Sony but after watching this video this is what I have been trying to find (video camera) that shoot 4k well and is still affordable
Awesome video thanks for making this video Tom!
Audio sounds a little 'hissy'--did u have gain cranked up the whole way?
Nice information, but what you advice for eddeting with raw us computer? thank you.
Just to clarify your custom LUT for 4.6k isn't out yet, right? I'm excited for your LUT as the built-in LUT in the 4.0 software is too contrasty
That's right. It will be out this Thursday to those who have subscribed to my newsletter before thursday
Is there a website or anything where I can check out more info on the feature film?
As always great summary. Love your style. Thank dude :)
Great Video Tom I'm really interested in this camera and all the equipment, but computer you think has the most space or storage to hold the average files from footage , so which computer you you use or would use for this camera ?
Isaac Splinker I did a video 1 month ago on my channel where I show how I build my new computer for $2K and how it edits raw 4.6k video
TomAntosFilms oh wow ok I'll look for it thank you for the feedback , keep up the good work man your going very Far!
Woo Tom Antos in India!! That too in Mumbai!! Misses a chance to meet you Tom Antos.... :(
If FHD is enough, get the BMMCC. Cheaper, smaller, lighter, RAW up to 60fps with beautiful filmlook.
If you gonna drop 5 g's on a camera then it's a given to drop some more for media and accessories and you probably already know how to light your scene.
dude lol the camera has negatives. just use it
can you record at 120fps in RAW?
Hi Tom, thank you very much for this video! Was very helpful! We are planing to shoot a feature film with the Ursa 4.6 as well and I have some questions... What storage solution (on the editing machine) would you recommend and how many terabytes space are necessary for editing a feature film? I know it depends also in the format you are shooting. In what format did you recorded your feature film?
Almost hilarious how much better your LUT is.
As a film maker would you recommend you are using EF mount on the Ursa mini as opposed to PL? I'm getting ready to buy this camera mainly for cinema / aerial work but not sure which mount to go with. Granted the PL cost a bit more but I am just curious as to why it seems you went with EF
EF more lens choices
very well explained and great attitude ! thanks very much
Hi Tom, thanks for the review! I'm from India. Can you tell me which film you shot here?
Kushang Dholakia title Zia
Hey Tom! Do you think you have a few samples you could send? I would even do some color work for you, my skill is provable.
awesome great camera - looking forward to seeing the film you are making in India!!!!
What tripod head and legs were you using? Looking for a tripod for my Ursa mini
Hey Tom, any word on when Zia will be released?
What about artifacting in the blacks? Is the fnp there no matter what iso you’re at?
Will this camera produce the same slow motion effects the Sony PXW-FS7 II 4K XDCAM Camera System with Super 35 CMOS does?
Did you try the Tiffen VND?
Hello Tom thanks very much for the great work and tips.
I need your advice.
I am planning on buying a new Ursa mini 4.6k here in the UK by end of May 2018 which is on a killer sale offer but for the pl mount version as pl lenses seem to be more expensive and people buy more of the ef versions like yours due to the vast and cheaper lens options.
I can only find Samyang Xeen 's and slr magic both in pl mount in the UK which are still expensive and Xeens give a greenish tinge and slr magic seems just okay
hence now I am thinking to buy this camera with ef mount which is £1200 more (: and get sigma art 18-35 1.8 to begin with.
Regards.
Amit Rajkumar Bagai yes it's a great camera and I still use it and recommend it. Get the EF version if you are on a budget
Tom Antos
Hello and thanks very much for your kind reply.
Then perhaps you should see the scientific tests
I have seen one test on youtube that disproves this. That is why I am saying Ursa has ""12-13ish" stops on the scale that Arri uses." (ARRI Dynamic Range Test Chart (DRTC-1)
Blackmagic is either using a different scale to calculate and/or is exaggerating their flagship sensor's dynamic range.
Either way, when you get into the higher and lower exposures the Ursa color accuracy decreases and their is an introduction of fixed pattern noise which some users might say is unusable, further reducing the *usable dynamic range.*
I was one of the early people to receive an Ursa Mini and I have clocked a lot of hours on mine. I have also used Arri and Varicam which both rate their sensors at 14+ stops. I trust that Arri and Panasonic who have been making cameras for years, are both being forthright. Perhaps they are being conservative, and their sensors has 17 or 18 stops if BMD has 15.
Cheers :)
How much costs your whole set up? I have the ursa mini 4K and i dont know which extras i should buy
Hey Tom, do you think you'll be reviewing the Kinefinity Terra 5K/6K at some point? Sorry for being off topic btw
Im trying to get my hands on it so I can review it but so far no luck :(
Thx for the respons, Tom. Yeah, the first 6K's are just now starting to reach chinese customers, 5K is set to arrive at years end. Good to know that you're on top of things tho :) Keep up the good work, love your channel. :)
Hey Tom do you color grade your own footage because I have seen a huge improvement over the years and now your color grades look fantastic
Yes I do. Thanks Dawson!
Thanks for the response, love your channel!
Hey Tom was this shot in India ?
Parts of it yes.
Tom Antos Where can I see the Film
why didn't you upload in 4k?
What SIGMA lens did you use for film?
Yes the Redcode is still the best RAW format... but this comes close and it's a lot cheaper. If money is not an issue go for Red camera
Tom Antos I'm glad, at least, Blackmagic got their 4.6k looking better :-) Problem was - for early adapters like my studio - after a 10 month wait and then getting a faulty product - they have lost some if their market share. Keep doing the good work, sir!
What are the links to your films using the ursa
