Prefect timing with this video, because my new job (just started this month) has a Blackmagic Camera I haven't ever used, and seeing that you have tried to use it make me feel better and more confidence in learning how to use it. Keep up everything!
FilmDude I'm in San Diego, I've been doing photography but not videography. It seems like there's a great opportunity here, with jobs fetching at least a thousand or two for multimillion dollar homes. Which is most of them. The properties here are so expensive, and the realtors get so much money in commission, that it's starting to look like there's a great opportunity to be had. Hence, I'm considering buying the Ursa Mini 4.6K.
Film Riot I'm a software developer and can give some advice on preventing your emails going into spam if you like? You need to set some spf and dkim dns records. Been watching your show since the start keep up the awesome work!
Film Riot don't do this again. Not everyone is using Twitter and Facebook and than this shit comes where you say: account made for this getting banned from the "game".
My work has had the Original BM Cinema Camera, it has its perks, but I could never get over the tiny sensor. A while back, we rented the 4K Ursa Mini. It was a fantastic camera to shoot with. Glad to see you guys doing a Blackmagic review. I struggled with their products up until this camera as well.
The trick with the black magic cameras is to shoot at its native iso and then boost the exposure in resolve. I know this works when shooting raw, so you would shoot at 800iso and raise the exposure +1 and you will have a better noise pattern. Also, the camera needs to "warm up" to get better noise quality.
After reading several 3 star reviews on some well known sellers, has Black Magic fixed the Magenta problem with the chip as well as their customer service? Thanks.
Really cool camera, been lucky to play with one recently too. One thing to note is the updated software recently released that makes some huge improvements to access and utilizes the touch capabilities far more. Recommend installing it. Cheers for a great review, direct and to the point.
Love my Ursa Mini 4.6k.....the dynamic range for the price is unbeatable. Not to mention the ability to shoot 4.6k raw etc. Awesome camera even with some of it's limitations.
One note about Cfast cards in general: Look for some Cfast to SSD converter units. It is cheaper, more flexible (storage wise, not in terms of equipment).
Go x0.25 speed at 4:26 and you will see 1 last frame of Ryan talking got doubled the colour correction filter. No idea how I saw that in the first place...
You want to stick to ISO 800 as that's it's native ISO even when you film in low light, it is only boosting the levels of the footage in camera the same you would in post so filming at 800 gives you maximum quality and maximum control over exposure too. Going to 400 again will lower the quality as its baking in a exposure adjustment that could be more precisely done in post.
UnratedAwesomeness The C100 is great. I use it at work. My only problem with it is that in certain shades of dark blue can give it a hard time. Other than that, the camera is bigger than you would think. So, you may run into some issues with gimbals.
400 should be clean, 800 begins to show noise. At least, that's the case with the 4K. I don't know about the 4.6K but apparently it's got a higher usable ISO level.
The R4v3n Nevermore Ok thanks for the advice! Yeah I've been eyeballing that c100 for a while now. New one's been coming out every 2 years so hopefully a new one gets announced and the mk 2 will drop in price? hehe a man can dream can't he?
UnratedAwesomeness The only thing that I don't like about the mk 2 is that the view finder is giant. So, it really limited the tilt range when we used it with our Movi m10.
I'm going to New Zealand this upcoming January and I'm on the fringe on getting this. How do you (or anyone in the comments) think a barebones rig would fare? I'd for sure get a battery, and I'm bringing a glidecam, but other than that I'm not sure how much I'm willing to haul in the middle of nowhere.
Don't you prefer the 4K version over the 4.6K, since it's cheaper and has a global shutter? 4.6K can only be used for 4K stabilization and slight croped shots.
There is also new software coming out soon which is only beta version at the moment, which makes the menu system even more nice and simplistic. This has so far none of the problems that the older large Ursa had, a much better camera.
Good review thank you. it seems every camera review I see mentions the low light issue. even the new Red 8K REd Epic-W. Is there a camera out there that actually works well in low light, and having said that, is there really a new for a camera to perform in low light? It seems that in any film or production worth anything some type of lighting setup would still be needed.
Hi there. How can I get a song included in this video (it´s an electronic music between minutes 6.08 and 6.48), who is the artist? I like it very much and I´d like to include it in some of my domestic videos. Thanks in advance for your support.
The Beta firmware makes using the Ursa Mini so much easier as it allows for real time changes to be shown on your screen/view finder. However, as it is still in beta form it is very buggy and will require you to press "reset camera settings" a few time on a day's shoot - though it is a positive sign for where there are taking the software in the units.
You mentioned in this video that you don't have to use Cfast 2 cards in this but will lose some shooting modes, can you give me a short answer to what cards you can use in basic modes? I am most concerned with the 4:1 compressed raw and then all 4.6 or 4 k modes, possibly 1080P in some situations. Thanks in advance and love your videos!
Does it have physical dials or buttons for iso/shutter/iris? I don't want to have to tap into a touch screen menu to adjust the exposure of my camera when I'm running and gunning.
Great review. Refreshing to hear someone else who doesn’t often shoot with shoulder rigs. And reassuring to hear that the UMP works for you for handheld work on that front. You may well have just nudged me over the edge. My wife will be in touch with your complaints department soon ;)
400/800 is a load of crap. Low light depends on the right shooting conditions as to what ISO you can use. There's a guy who runs the Faymus media channel and he does a really bad low light test where he can get the Blackmagic to produce a usable image at 6400 ISO. By comparison, this guy did an opposite end of the spectrum test to produce a bad ISO iso performance at 1600. For normal shooting conditions where your image is not black and you try to boost it in post like this person did, the image is very fine at 1600. This low light test he did would make any camera look bad.
Did you guys have trouble with crosshatch patterns on your 4.6k cam? ... seems to be a debayering artifact, that's occurring in windowed mode and gets worse when scaling the image ... we have the issue on ours and the forums are full of suffering owners... bmd rma'd some of the cams with mixed results... anything on your cam?
Hi Ryan! I'm planning to shoot a 90'' ad. Do you have any advice on how to write and plan a scene in order to keep it in a given time frame? I mean, the final result will be a number of scenes edited together to get to a 90'' short story, how can I write, for example, a 17'' scene? Is there a sort of "equation" like X words/lines = X seconds? Thank you for your work, it's gold!! Keep it up ;)
The 5d is also pretty outdated. That said, the ursa mini is not quite as inexpensive as it sounds. Storage and batteries for the Ursa mini are really expensive, while those things are really cheap for a dslr or mirrorless camera
Definitely wouldn't go with Canon DSLR's nowadays (high ends are still just fine). Many people have been switching from Canon to Sony (including myself) and love them.
Sony cameras are bad too. They have bad dynamic range and the rolling shutter performance. If you were lucky enough to see the HBO camera stress test they did with all the top cinema cameras from each manufacturer, the Blackmagic image is the only camera under 10K that holds up to the image of the Red/Alexa cameras. I think the Blackmagic image is even better than almost all of the Canon Cinema Series lineup all the way to the C700.
would you really recommend this camera? I mean knowing that Magic lantern is working on the 5d mark iv makes me doubtful about chosing ursa mini over the 5d.
Are you fine gentlemen aware of any way to scan through LUTS over an image or footage in a quick view scenario as seen at the end of your video here on a MAC OS? Appreciate any feedback... Thanks. Nickolas
I just filmed my first short with the 4K version. Not a fan. The 4.6K version might solve a lot of things I didn't like but I don't think I'd want to use it either unless it was just the right project.
hi ryan. i bought me the ursa mini 4k and im so happy with it. I didn t need the 4.6 because im 14jears old and the 4k version is still expensive. every monday night ich watch your vids (im from germany). keep up the great work. P.S. i know the vid is older
You are the best Ryan........ please help me with full tutorials on editing music videos with Adobe Premiere Pro cc or the HITFILM editor. Really need to know how to edit music videos, thanks
I have had this camera for about a year and I have never been so disappointed. The image quality is great yes, but the camera has some very prominent quirks (typical Blackmagic) the fixed pattern noise is my biggest issue, but to be honest the newest firmware update is not too impressive.
Hey I know you mentioned it in a Monday Mailbag video, but I was wondering when your After Effects Tutorial Video would be released, like by the end of the year or beginning of the next?
well the fact they really haven't mentioned it, i doubt its coming out any time soon. but, you don't talky need a full class, I've learned so much just from they're individual tutorials
This camera is a beast. I have been eyeing it from months. But sad there is no global shutter. But i would still like to have it s it contains a lot more than what it doesn't have. It's the best under 6000 bucks. Great crisp review. :)
Good review. The top handle makes a huge positive difference to using this camera! The native ISO is 800, and like you said, the new firmware makes the menu even better! (Huge improvement to audio settings too)
Are you looking to do photos with your video? Audio? You are comparing 2 different markets. One is a great photo camera that can do great video. The other has more dynamic range in your video and professional audio capabilities. You are comparing apples and oranges here.
2 completely different cameras for completely different uses. 1dxmkii is a great run and gun documentry lowlight camera. ursa mini 4.6k is a great film narrati9ve production film camera with raw and 15 stops of dynamic range (but poor low light)
hello, I need to buy a camera that qualifies for Netflix requirements aproval , but that is in my budget, what do you recommend, I have some canon lenses might be able to use them
I'm a simple man. Film Riot releases new content, I watch. Always learning something new/interesting.
HELL TO THE YEAH
they stoped doing Videos for Beginners!!!:(
Gosh if only there was some way of watching all the videos for beginners they made previously.
SPY FILMS - Watch his older videos then?? I'm growing as Ryan is growing. If you're still at the same level you were in 2012, there's a problem
Why a Problem im 17 :D? I just like the Old videos with Simple steps and Low buged .. now its to Professional
Prefect timing with this video, because my new job (just started this month) has a Blackmagic Camera I haven't ever used, and seeing that you have tried to use it make me feel better and more confidence in learning how to use it. Keep up everything!
Does anyone else realize the Film Riot channel has been up for more than 10 YEARS now?! how awesome is that!
Finally Ryan reviews the camera I've been trying to get him to review for months!!!!!!! Thank you film and movie gods!!!!! Winning!!!
this channel is so positive it is a great outlet for all filmmakers
+NRC Thanks!
I'm totally going to buy one of these... The dynamic range would make real estate interiors a breeze
I can vouch for that. Its nice to be able to see out windows.
Is real estate video in demand these days?
FilmDude depends on where you live. To be clear it's not the highest paid work, but if you can do multimillion dollar homes, you do alright
Kevin Carr I feel that, I live in Atlanta and we have some nice places, thinking about reaching out to someone. Thanks for the reply
FilmDude I'm in San Diego, I've been doing photography but not videography. @ryan do you ever wake up screaming "think domain.com!!!" xD
+Life Effects Every. Damn. Night.
Been using this camera exclusively for 6 months and love it. Nice review
don't you get any fpn?
and @ 3:59 my logo
His logo is based on the mark for the distant between the sensor and the subject aka the focal plane mark.
Giancarlo - the sensor marker (where you measure from to know where to set focus)
Oh damn! I just got that now that you mentioned it
Wow I just now realized what your logo is when it was on my camera forever. I just thought it looked cool.
Nate's Film Tutorials - You have a channel giving filmmaking tutorials and you don't know what the sensor marker is? It's used to set focus precisely.
@ryan - update that firmware to 4.0. It is life changing for this camera.
and then I finished the episode and realized you couldn't upgrade it.... ..... so when you do, you'll love it.......(slowly walking away)
The camera loves to live at ISO200... Noise is gone then.. but yea, it is super noisy as you go up in ISO.
This video couldn't have come at a better time. Using an ursa mini on a shoot in november for the first time and needed to do some research!
+Braxton Klavins great tips. I'll try it out.
I'm loving the Psycho look at 9:17. Very unique B&W. I'm loving it.
After reading several 3 star reviews on some well known sellers, has Black Magic fixed the Magenta problem with the chip as well as their customer service? Thanks.
What lens did you use for the test shots outside?
Anything you had Ryan Booth DP I will gladly watch :)
I got my ursa mini back in January and I'm loving it. It's so much better than the old canon I had before that.
Really cool camera, been lucky to play with one recently too. One thing to note is the updated software recently released that makes some huge improvements to access and utilizes the touch capabilities far more. Recommend installing it. Cheers for a great review, direct and to the point.
Great video as always guys, the bar you have set for yourselves has only been rising and I love it!
They updated the interface! Not sure if you've seen it, it makes the run and gun game pretty easy!
Love my Ursa Mini 4.6k.....the dynamic range for the price is unbeatable. Not to mention the ability to shoot 4.6k raw etc. Awesome camera even with some of it's limitations.
I noticed your file explorer at the end showing off the LUT pack has chrome-like tabs. Is that part of Windows 10? I've never seen it before.
One note about Cfast cards in general: Look for some Cfast to SSD converter units. It is cheaper, more flexible (storage wise, not in terms of equipment).
Haha will buy it soon and now you made a video about it. Finally a review from you! But I was pretty sure already that I am going to buy it
Go x0.25 speed at 4:26 and you will see 1 last frame of Ryan talking got doubled the colour correction filter. No idea how I saw that in the first place...
It's pretty impressive how much BlackMagic has improved the menu settings ever since the original BlackMagic camera!
+elliott mariess From my tests, 400 yielded better results. Held the highlights better too.
Hey Ryan! Are you planning on doing any VFX tutorials soon? Also, due you have an ETA on Intercept?
This is such a beauty! Really hope stars align and with Harambe blesses me so I could get my hands on this!
At ISO 400, is the image clean? Or is it just minimally noisy. Looking for a camera. I think the c100 might be better for me
UnratedAwesomeness The C100 is great. I use it at work. My only problem with it is that in certain shades of dark blue can give it a hard time. Other than that, the camera is bigger than you would think. So, you may run into some issues with gimbals.

IAN 4000 Very true, and increase res means more room to play with NR too right?
The R4v3n Nevermore Ok thanks for the advice! Yeah I've been eyeballing that c100 for a while now. New one's been coming out every 2 years so hopefully a new one gets announced and the mk 2 will drop in price? hehe a man can dream can't he?
UnratedAwesomeness The only thing that I don't like about the mk 2 is that the view finder is giant. So, it really limited the tilt range when we used it with our Movi m10.
So will the film riot crew be in bloodtober like previous years or will you guys be behind the camera this time?
The 4.0 menu system blows this one away! its so amazing!
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. What is your workflow for grading the raw footage?
Don't you prefer the 4K version over the 4.6K, since it's cheaper and has a global shutter?
4.6K can only be used for 4K stabilization and slight croped shots.
Are those the Zeen primes or are those the original cine primes from Rokinon?
I've been waiting for you guys to do a video on the Ursa for so long!!!
We love your channel! Thanks for all the hard work your team puts in!
There is also new software coming out soon which is only beta version at the moment, which makes the menu system even more nice and simplistic. This has so far none of the problems that the older large Ursa had, a much better camera.

I am most concerned with the 4:1 compressed raw and then all 4.6 or 4 k modes, possibly 1080P in some situations. Thanks in advance and love your videos!
Can it record on two cards at the same time? Like first card is for raw and a second one is for proxy footage?
Great review, btw ;)
i would like the mad max fury LUTs.Do you hav it on list?
+matthews Raphael it's in the cinematic LUTs pack.
I have the Ursa 4.6k and it is brilliant! You definitely need the 4.0 firmware, it makes it even better!
Does it have physical dials or buttons for iso/shutter/iris? I don't want to have to tap into a touch screen menu to adjust the exposure of my camera when I'm running and gunning.
I think with a new update the menu structure is made even better. Don't know if it's released yet. Greetings from germany!
Oh... You mentioned this in the video right after I commented xD
So am I entered in the contest now!? 2 years later!? Yes, yeah? YEAH!!!!!!
Great review. Refreshing to hear someone else who doesn’t often shoot with shoulder rigs. And reassuring to hear that the UMP works for you for handheld work on that front.
You may well have just nudged me over the edge. My wife will be in touch with your complaints department soon ;)
"Like literally inside the bright orb in the sky." Too good. 😂
Do you have a plan to have a giveaway to Davinci Ressolve Studio?
Such an awesome little camera but ISO 400/800 just kills me
400/800 is a load of crap. Low light depends on the right shooting conditions as to what ISO you can use. You wouldnt like red or the Alexa
NICE! What codec did you use for the footage?
Is Andrew Kramer actually going to release Intercept?
Did you guys have trouble with crosshatch patterns on your 4.6k cam? ... seems to be a debayering artifact, that's occurring in windowed mode and gets worse when scaling the image ... we have the issue on ours and the forums are full of suffering owners... bmd rma'd some of the cams with mixed results...
anything on your cam?
I really like the fact that the short films have the most straightforward titles!
Keep it up ;)
can you look at the Pocket Cinema Camera?
is this 4k or 4.6k?
Loved the video, those close ups of the eyes were super duper sharp. Plus I'm real hyped for bloodtober
Damn at with the price points nowadays it doesn't even make sense to even look at buying a 5d anymore. Damn times have changed.
The 5d is also pretty outdated. That said, the ursa mini is not quite as inexpensive as it sounds. Storage and batteries for the Ursa mini are really expensive, while those things are really cheap for a dslr or mirrorless camera
Yeah you're definitely right about the ursa mini. The 5d iv is pretty up-to-date though! Depending on what you're planning on shooting of course.
@@overnightclassic2 where can I find this HBO stress test?
I also had a test shot of the black magic ursa mini on my channel. I'm using the Sony f7s on my newest shot, I love it! I hooked the Odyssey up to it.
what is the soundtrack on short BM video playing? Love it.
Actually just got hands-on with the URSA Mini for the first time last night. Coincidence?
would you really recommend this camera?
4k raw or dci? which format?
Does this camera support apsc lenses, like canon 18-135mm efs.
You are the best Ryan........ please help me with full tutorials on editing music videos with Adobe Premiere Pro cc or the HITFILM editor.
Really need to know how to edit music videos, thanks
Intercept?
Probably never coming
I feel like after all this time it's just too hyped up and would disappoint.. kinda like Half life 3 ;)
Does somebody know which music is beeing used at 6:09 ?
What do you think about the Ursa Mini 4k vs the 4.6k?
I have had this camera for about a year and I have never been so disappointed. The image quality is great yes, but the camera has some very prominent quirks (typical Blackmagic) the fixed pattern noise is my biggest issue, but to be honest the newest firmware update is not too impressive.
@ryan what´s the song in the footage part? (6:10)
I think there is a OS update for the Iraq mini
These are really good cameras tbf. We have two of them for my course at uni and they hold up af
Where can you rent pro cameras like this?
Ryan, is that a specific LUT you're using to grade the test footage? or is it a full custom job
Ha, just unpaused to see the answer to that question
Hey I know you mentioned it in a Monday Mailbag video, but I was wondering when your After Effects Tutorial Video would be released, like by the end of the year or beginning of the next?
after effects tutorial for what?
After effects...
dude, they have hundreds of after effects tutorials on the channel.... what more do you need
I know that, but Ryan mentioned they were working on a FULL After Effects tutorial from the basics to the advanced stuff, like a class kinda thing.
well the fact they really haven't mentioned it, i doubt its coming out any time soon. but, you don't talky need a full class, I've learned so much just from they're individual tutorials
This camera is a beast. I have been eyeing it from months. But sad there is no global shutter. But i would still like to have it s it contains a lot more than what it doesn't have. It's the best under 6000 bucks. Great crisp review. :)
i would have liked to get some sound tests with this camera Ryan...
Most people use external recorders with boom mics or clip on mics.
Most people use external recorders with boom mics or clip on mics.
True, but it is 5,000 dollars, so I have decided its juuust a little out of my price range....just a little. okay, so maybe a lot.
Michael Martin best option would be to get a sony a6300 or gh4 with an external 4k recorder . The entire rig will be cheaper than this camera.
Thanks bro
Wow . . . What time is it?
Finally a blackmagic design review
love the Sunshine reference at the end
Also, what lens did you guys use? Canon EF-based I hope.
He uses the Rokinon Cine DS lenses. (I highly recommend them by the way. I currently now have a 14, 24, 35, 50, & 85). Just have 2 more to go!
Good review. The top handle makes a huge positive difference to using this camera! The native ISO is 800, and like you said, the new firmware makes the menu even better! (Huge improvement to audio settings too)
1DX Mark ii or Ursa mini ?
1dx Mark ii for sure
Are you looking to do photos with your video? Audio? You are comparing 2 different markets. One is a great photo camera that can do great video. The other has more dynamic range in your video and professional audio capabilities.
You are comparing apples and oranges here.
2 completely different cameras for completely different uses. 1dxmkii is a great run and gun documentry lowlight camera. ursa mini 4.6k is a great film narrati9ve production film camera with raw and 15 stops of dynamic range (but poor low light)
But how feels the motion?? From da camera?
PLEASE TEST OUT THE LUMIX G7
I'm happy with it, great for video, but for photography I recomend Canon
It's a gh4 with less bells and whistles. Surprisingly enough though, the noise pattern for the g7 looks cleaner in some situations than the gh4
Unidrw Better off testing the g85 - the g7 is old hat now
Sure, but the G7 is more for budget shooters- it's like 500 bucks body only on amazon
hello, I need to buy a camera that qualifies for Netflix requirements aproval , but that is in my budget, what do you recommend, I have some canon lenses might be able to use them
Video starts at 1:59
Been shooting on the Pocket for 2 years. Quirky little guy but after shooting 12 bit color I never wana go back to the dark ages of 8 bit
Where can I get copyright free background music???
giveaway? how do we enter?
Can anyone please tell me what "Log C" is? And also Dynamic range
