    With all the bullshit reviews by "experts" who shoot nothing more than travel videos thrown together with overblown transitions, this proper review by an experienced professional really is a breath of fresh air. I'm sick of seeing people review cameras and gear that they've been loaned and used for a days shooting of nothing more than a few garden flowers only for them to give their opinions on how good the product is as though they know what they're talking about. Garth your video like those of Phillip Bloom are right on the money, backed by real world use over an extended period of time in a whole host of environments. Thank you

    As good a camera review as you will find anywhere. If you ever decide to hang up the camera one day, there is a presenter's job awaiting as well. Comprehensive, outstanding Garth.

    Yeeeeees! Finally someone reviewing this incredible camera who actually USES IS and not just makes a "review", talking about it from the perspective of professional real world job and not from a "vlogging" point of view. Lots of people compare the Ursa Mini Pro to the Canon C300 ect. While the C300 does have great featurees and good image quality the ergonomics are the worst piece a sheit from hell! Question: have you ever used that stupid multifunction dial at the side? thanks for the review and I'm curious to see "Disunity". Great respect for all the folks working to protect the last rhinos, this job is more dangerous then being a Cop in the US. Salute! Sadly, black and white Rhinos are considered extinct. :(

    What a great review, Garth. It seems that you are not only a talented filmmaker, but also a very talented presenter. I must say that I really dig the shots from your Africa documentary, yet I am left wondering what lenses you used on the piece. Must have been a variety of wide angle, mid range, and telephoto for such comprehensive shots. Could you please enlighten me on your lens choices and how these suit your work with the URSA Mini Pro? Keep creating!

    • @robertdeltour3668
      @robertdeltour3668 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, they do this to discourage poaching. By removing the horn in a safe environment, they take away the one thing that poachers are after. Its basically like a giant fingernail, so it doesn't hurt them at all.

      Thank you! I use the Sigma 18-35 F1.8 and the Sigma 70-200 F.28 That gives me fairly good coverage on a wide range of focal lengths, although I find my self using the 18-35 about 90% of the time.

    Great review! But there's no mention of lowlight? How you deal with poor lighting, what you found to be the limits, and perhaps your preferred method of grading the footage(LUTs, presets, output preference?) Please touch of these vital point when u get a chance. Cheers.

    • @GarthDeBrunoAustin
      @GarthDeBrunoAustin  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment :) Yea I thought of going in depth into it for the review but I decided to just put some lowlight shots in the review and instead do a whole video about what the camera is capable of in low light and how to maximise it's potential. Thought It would have been rushed in the review, I probably should have briefly touched on it though. It's actually the next video i'm putting up :)

      dsa I own the UMP as well and honestly it is the best camcorder for doc work short of going above the 20K mark.. love it as a main camera for this stuff even more than our industry standard fs7’s and c300ii’s because of the image quality. It rivals our dsmc2’s and with the form factor and Built in ND’s along with its reliability we often prefer it to those, it matches arri footage nearly perfectly.. As for low light if you shoot in braw or cinema dng you can pull a ridiculous amount out of the shadows that it’s as if you were shooting close to 12,800 on a canon, but without banding.. it stores that much info...

  • @brmoogma

    Hi Garth, I have read that the Ursa mini pro does NOT support simultaneous recording on the CF or the Sd for a back-up. Can you confirm this and how did you manage this? I mean shooting for a whole day and have a card failure (especially in harsh environments) is not something impossible. This is something that would stop me from buying this camera. Of course you can add an external recorder but for documentary shooting it means complicating things.

  • @benoitpeeters7511
    @benoitpeeters7511 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok, So,... don't know if you'll read this comment because it's been 2 month already and... u surely have got more stuff to do ... BUT:
    Man I searched the youtube for any reviews about people that effectively USED the camera on the field. I'm planning a documentary with my sister, in Canada (yeah it's not african Rush I know lol), and I was really blind about what camera to pick. I'm in Brazil and here where I live I can't rely on shops to see the camera and to test it by myself, so I kinda rely on pro advices. It is hard because lot of reviews are not so "field oriented", they only talk about specs and other marketing race stuff. I was with my heart balancing between Ursa Mini Pro, Red Scarlet and Canon C200. I think I'll go URSA.
    Could you give me some advices about the lenses you used? I was thinking about a couple of good prime (35mm and 95mm) don't know if a zoom lense is suitable (I come from DSLR background where I'm used to use lenses like 70-200 F2.8 :) )
    I will do some interviews and planned shot, I wonder if an external screen/recorder should complete the setup...
    I'm new to filmmaking... As I told, I got Photo background. :)
    Thanks for your help!!! Great job! Plus I loved the footages !!!!

    • @ThisIsTenou
      @ThisIsTenou 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From my experience, working with zoom lenses instead of fixed primes can make your life so much easier in documentary shooting. But that's only the case if you have to do spontaneous shots you can't plan. Like animals etc.. If you can plan your shots, definitely get primes!
      And regarding the external recorder/monitor: That totally depends on you.
      The Ursa has already a monitor built in, but it's not that big, of course. That's a personal decision, I believe.
      And I just wanted to say, that instead of buying expensive CFast-Cards you could also get the SSD Recorder for the Ursa, it costs about $400 (USD) but SSDs are way cheaper than CFast cards. So at a certain capacity, this can save you much money.
      Edit: He stated in another comment that he's using Sigma 18-35 1.8 and 70-200 2.8 Lenses. So he's using pretty much what you already have, if the mount fits!

  • @Zocker827
    @Zocker827 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just wow. Do you shoot virtually everything in ISO 800 and adjust your ND filters and iris accordingly? There didn't seem to be any noise at all at 800. I heard that this camera doesn't cope with low light but that didn't seem to be a problem at all, going by the fire scene. I'm looking forward to using this.

    Great review. I could use your help with a question: I'm about to shoot a series of docs and I am looking at this camera. I don't have the budget for two, but I could get this with a dslr/mirrorless "B cam." Do you know if the image from Panasonic GH5 would be able to match this BM image or is there another camera in that medium format price range that could do the job? Maybe the Sony A7r3? Thanks.

    • @benoitpeeters7511
      @benoitpeeters7511 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'l in the exact same situation... hahaha and was thinking the exact same thing... picking a Ursa Mini pro and a Panasonic GH5 as B cam... I thought that PAnasonic shooting in LOG 10 bits it could be easier to match the BMD. Well I imagine that, I don't have the technical background yet to asume it. But in theory. Even if it doesn't match perfectly, It should be close enough.

Please I bought a BlackMagic URSA mini 4.6K for a friend on my last trip to the US, she called me today that the camera isn't showing options to shoot in 4.6K just options for 4K, I went to check the camera myself and 4.6K option isn't on the recording menu at all just the option for 4k, she actually has 2 URSA mini 4.6K and the other one is showing options for it in comparison. I actually believe it is the settings on the camera or maybe the camera has to be updated but she is really worried and probably thought I bought her a fake camera even when 4.6k is written on the camera, Blackmagic is closed for the weekend so I can't reach them... Please what do you think could be hiding the options to shoot 4.6k...

      Howzit Anthony. Could you ask your friend to send me two photos, one of the front of the camera and the other of the menu where you change the resolution settings. Then I’ll see what I can do to help. You can email it to garthdbaustin@gmail.com

      EF mount? no "Cinelenses" then?

      I think the mount is swappable. But EF definitely has cine-lenses... cooke, zeiss and canon even. Atlas Co will have their new anamorphic lens with EF too.
