After uploading the video I realised I hadn't mentioned the size and weight: It's a 3.5cm (1.38") cube that weighs 47g (1.65oz)
I am in the market for a action camera which one do you suggest I get? The Contour Roam2 or the Polaroid cube
There is now a GoPro hero edition 2014 for £99. This is an amazing camera with 1080p 5mp and 720p. I'd definitely go with this if u have the budget. Check it out at www.gopro.com
Michael Santoni I'd just go for the Gopro TechMan Yeah suggested, better quality and has a lot of aftermarket mounts and stuff.
can you please get the waterproof case for the camera. hers the link www.amazon.com/Polaroid-Waterproof-Shockproof-Action-Lifestyle/dp/B00NXK3FZ6/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1412657818&sr=8-6&keywords=polaroid+cube
You did not mention the fact that magnet is concave. It means that you can stick it to a sphere and tilt the way you want.
Aside from the content of this review, the Polaroid Cube, this is one of the best tech reviews I've ever seen/heard - concise, straightforward, easy to understand, and just the right amount of useful information. Thank you, Techmoan!

That blue color gives it a retro look.
628DirtRooster that's why I picked the blue rather than the red or black versions.
The black version is great when you want to film incognito. Filming who is messing with a friend's chained bike outside every night. The black Cube was oriented, sitting on an iron gate/fence pointing to the bike. Since it was black, and the fence is black, and it's night, you couldn't even see the thing sitting there! And yes, we got clear video of the vandal and turned in the video to the cops...

This is the BEST review for this camera , period. Polaroid should link to this article as part of their "manual". I ended up getting the Polaroid Cube, it's the cheapest option in Canada Mobious is still more mone for w/e reason.
Honestly I was quite impressed with the quality of the visuals of the camera. I was not expecting something so clear from something so small. Also I think it's real use is for more stable camera work, being a hidden cam for a video or TV show might better suit a camera such as this (that's just my opinion)
came here expecting it to be rubbish, leaving here wondering why I haven't got one!
Impressed with the sound quality of it the most, plus....
IT HAS A MAGNET!
Matthew Coleman - Thanks for the synopsis, I did a look-up and saw it was $135 then I noticed your comment was four years old. I thought it was too expensive before I noticed that now I _know_ it's too expensive. But thanks for the synopsis!
It’s only $30 US at Amazon now, Cowboy Bob.
I love the magnet. It sticks anywhere on my car. It sticks to the railing for my stairs. It sticks to the cubical walls at work. It will even stick to the corner of dry walls (the corners use a metal strip on them). It sticks to my adjustable arm desk lamp! Plus, you can get a tripod fitting magnet with the similar curve and mount it, magnetically, to a tripod! I have the waterproof housing and take this snorkeling! It's quite a nice camera to play with! I glued a neodymium magnet to my kite and sent it up into the sky!
@@JohnMHammer the Act II is the new cheap one for $30. It's a piece of crap compared to the original
@@Dogmom27 I can't use it to read license plates from my bike when both the bike and the car are in motion so it's not a good after-incident safety cam. But it's pretty good for recreational purposes, the plastic bike mount that goes with it is not very good but with a rubber band to reduce the vibration it works nicely for "fun" videos. Think back 10 years and imagine what kind of video camera you could get for $30, pretty amazing really even if it's just a toy.
I watched this expecting a good laugh at Polaroid’s expense and ended up wanting one.
Wow your reviews are actually on point and not just someone loving to hear the sound of their voice as it is the case with so many reviews on youtube. Every word has information that is valuable and concise, as well as very understandable vocabulary and helpful links. Subscribed!
Great review!
I feel like you forgot to mention that people really love the magnet for some reason, even though it won't really stick to most surfaces.
very strange, mine doesn't reorient the video as yours does. regardless of what position it is in when i power it up and or when i start a recording....
i just read that it depends on your playback software, which needs the ability to read exim data from the footage which orients the playback of the video
Would you recommend it
Besides the complaints about Polaroid the company, I really loved and appreciate such a thorough review of this little cute camera. I have been waiting for a proper review for months now! Thank you for this!
Calida I wasn't complaining - just clarifying. Many people really think that the Polaroid products must automatically be good because of all their years of history making cameras. I get similar emails about the Kodak action cameras that are identical models to the ION and Monoprice cameras - I believe it's important to ensure that people know exactly what they are buying and why the names and logos are no guarantee of anything (good or bad).
I bought some little magnets and taped them around my polaroid cube. Now it can attach in any orientation :)

I must say I wasnt expecting the quality to be so good from a little camera. Looks very nice.
Thank you for the hard work you put into making this video. I will now the black one.
I like your reviews, they are really helpful and thorough.
Regarding the camera, the reason it wasn't sticking at the handrails is because handrails are made out of 304 or 316 grade stainless steel which is not magnetic. It is not the camera's magnet fault.
Can you use it as a webcam at all?
Larry, I didn't think you'd be commenting here!
Daniel Michael
Lol I comment on a lot of videos :D
I would doubt it because it doesn't seem to come with a way to hook it up to a monitor/computer, but to be honest I'm not sure. If it did though it would look awesome. And yes Daniel Michael, He isn't kidding I see him in comment sections almost as much as I see pressfarttocontinue!
***** isn't it a bit expensive to use it just like a webcam? Average quality usb webcams cost arround 10/20€...
Joe Mauri Well true, but you could also use it as a video camera so it could double as both. But as a stand alone webcam its not worth it, logitech has MUCH better webcams for the same price.
Clever, thorough, most enjoyable review. And supplying the files, for anyone to watch them on their favourite player? Totally amazing!
This camera seems to do a fine job for what it costs. I have been looking for such a camera and do not want to pay for an expensive Go Pro. The Polaroid Cube is now at the top of my list of choices.
Curious as to what you may think about it in 2020... And most importantly, if its fixed rechargeable battery is still any good?
That camera is really really cool for what it is! I would've never have expected that a camera at that size could have that much quality. It's quite impressive!
Um afraid that Apple would buy this and relaunch it as iCube :D
***** right ? haha
+miroozy well it is a cube that can seething like an eye can
+miroozy and they would charge twice as much for it
FukUNerd triple actually..haha
and they'll make the app only available in the apple store. 😑 I hate apple
I love that packaging. It's my favorite thing about it. Other than the magnet, of course.
OK, this thing is old now (2020), but also down to $26 shipped, and appears to have better image quality than some of the cheap chinese action cams on Amazon depending on your use, besides the "useful" magnetic mount (i didn't have trouble imagining steel mount points that aren't stainless...). Note that most any decent video editor can flip the image for you any way you need to...
You can now also get the tripod mount, a suction mount, a sticky mount, and a bike mount all about HALF the prices shown in the video, so that means, for example a $36 version of this can include a tripod mount...
Gopro session copied this?
yeah...
+jaap crooijmans Yes, today read the claim that Polaroid filed against GoPro
+Eddi Nice I thought "Polaroid" means nothing now?
how does the video and still image quality compare between the Cube+ and GP Session
King Bravy yea but I the go is better remember Polaroid doesn't mean nothing anymore
The busker at 05:20 sounds awesome! What a great song Georgia in my mind is.
Since it has a accelerator built in it, maybe a firmware upgrade will allow it to be used as auto start stop dash cam with collision detection.
10p6 like the Wii Remote
That was one of the best review I have ever seem. And I mean in general. You explained every aspect of it, you were clear and right on point. Took away most of my doubts about this camera. Excellent work! Thumbs up for this video!
hi Techmoan do you still use your Polaroid cube?I want one now.
The magnet is a great and useful part of this camera. Lots of stuff in my life is metal. I stuck it to the roof of my Jeep and drove down the road at over 60mph and it stayed on the entire 40 minute drive! On my Kayak, I have a metal plate under the carry handle. The camera sticks quite well to the plastic kayak magetized through the kayak and holding onto the metal plate. I took the metal plate that came with the packaging and epoxy'd a 10X20 nut to the plate. Now, it has a threaded camera mount! I went to my local hardware shop and purchased some metal sheet and cut out my own metal squares. Now I not only have a camera mount, I have a velcro mount, a 3M quick release mount, a suction cup mount, and a special mount I created that allows you to use rubberbands or bungies to hold it in place!
"and you can see my stupid bald head" oh man I laughed so har to that sor some reason lol cheers, i like a lot your animosity! :)
We had a couple of those that we used to use for field aid research at university. The lack of auto stabilization on video wasn’t much of a downside since we used a small mechanical stabilizer mount we adapted for it but it was still a big hassle. The cameras themselves were also not stock, for one we changed the magnet for a stronger one and put a protection film between it and the camera to prevent EMI and because the process of changing that was mostly destructive, we commissioned clear polycarb shells as replacement for the original pastel color shells they came with. All because we didn’t have access to the optionals for it at the time. Eventually the original couple got given away to one of the group members for another study and we got a new set of them with polycarb protective shells and used something akin to SwitchBots to record video from a distance (basically a RF receiver on a solenoid that activated a small piston to do the button presses required for recording from a few feet away). Pretty nifty thing, that camera. But let’s say that they are not that blast proof.
i've seen mentions of this camera before and it does look pretty decent for what it is capable of :) maybe they will make a little case that will let you attache it to a tripod? that would be cool!
they already have that.... or just buy a 1/4-20 screw.
If you had watched all the video you would of seen it mentioned that there is a case and a tripod mount and a few other items being released for it. :-)
i did see the case part, but was unaware of the tripod mount. thanks for mentioning ;)
As always Mat thanks for the upload!
I own a Mobius and for me the most annoying thing is the 3 buttons, I find them unnecessarily complicated. I'm tempted by this Cube purely for the ease of use with the one button. As a biker yourself I'm sure you will understand how hard it is to press things when you have your gloves on. Another thing that tempts me is the range of mounts that will be available, as I would use it to put on my helmet or mount to my handlebars etc. The issue of no tripod thread doesn't bother me because if I do ever mount something to a tripod I generally use my AS-15....hmmm, very tempted indeed, you've given me food for thought!
Thanks once again
Fire, Water, Air, and Dirt. Fucking magnets, how do they work?!
I used to have a Polaroid cube a few years ago but I lost it, It was an amazing camera and I really liked it. I really liked the Magnet on the bottom.
"Now you can see my stupid bald head" LOL that made me chuckle haha!
Just bough a cube and was not sure how to fix the angle of view things. Thanks for the tip on how to activate the view sensor.

It's funny to see a Mcjuggernuggets reference here.
Got one last week. Great camera for $25!!! I mainly got it for my son's "GoPro" Hot Wheel. Works great!
New smart car, never seen that in the US (yet).
XKR1200 unfortunately it's already been and gone. Was manufactured 2003-2006. It's a Smart Roadster Coupe.
Techmoan the 2016 model.
Really impressive little thing! By the way, I traveled down to Manchester from Scotland in the summer and wandered into the arndale center. I must say it was quite sad how excited I was to be where most of your videos are filmed!
Great review, thank you for sharing
I think this is an attempt to create some type of go pro camera as if this would be the competition. Do you think the polaroid stacks up against the go pro? I think this is just an attempt and the go pro would be much better for an 'action' camera.
that little thing is so darn cute!.. ; )
I've got one for the magnet issue. Why not drill a 1/4" hole on it, so you have your tripod ready access as well as the magnetic option (even though its not very practical).
This guy sounds like James May.
Jacob Mason petrolhead spotted! you on Carthrottle? I'm just sittin here researching a future Vlog camera and I scrolled past a petrolhead statement. had to ask.
Here in the Americas they call us motorheads! I think he just sounds like James May. Too bad Top Gear is canceled.
Jacob Mason Grand Tour is decent
Oh my god you're right.
Captain Slow has a little bit of a deeper voice ( :
I want to know if that first street musician has a record for sale anywhere. His voice, I really dig it.
I watch your videos even though I'm not really interested in this product. Great job. The quality of buskers in your area is phenomenal.
When you were driving it freaked me out because I live in the US and we drive on the right side of the road!
ByteOfWood YT. You didn't realise the British accent?
Didn't know they finally got the scaffolding off St Anne's church! Might have to pop by later and take some pics.
And this camera is a bit tempting, it's footprint is much smaller than the gopro; so it's great for mounting onto a hotshoe or something like that. Is not too wide.
Note: 2019, the cube is cheaper than the mobius
Polaroid CUBE Act Two is $29 as of 031220!
I've finally got round to watching this has here I am in 2022 going to buy one. Still seems a brilliant product. How much were they back in 2014?
People are 'attracted to' a magnet. Heh.
Why has no one laughed at this in 3 years

excellent, balanced review. i could not read the webpage clearly but didn't it show tripod mounts and helmet mounts?
I was going to give this a "thumbs up" but I'll do that later on ;)
Hilarious!
Just got one of these worked ok but none of my move editing programs where able to put together clips and edit them adobe elements and windows movie maker , movie maker you can work with the clips but when saved the audio is not in sync with the clips..

Hmm interesting.. I've always been a sucker for cubes and I also really like action camera's :) I hope they'll make a mount for it that lets you use their waterproof case and connect it to GoPro attachments :)
it looks s bit like the instagram logo
Simon Andersson Do you even know how old the brand Polaroid is?
Well, Instagram ripped of Polariod.
Their old logo basically was a stylized Polaroid camera, probably because the target group (hipsters) loved Polaroids. Then some Holding bought the brand and Instagram changed their logo (what a coincidence)...

We just got these in at work and I was thinking of getting one, with my discount its affordable enough to get to just play around with... Thanks for the review!
Just get the new cheap gopro. It is superior to this piece of crap. Gopro is waterproof and has tons of accessories. Gopro has replaceable batteries and a screen.

I dont understand why morons like you like to start tech wars....how old are you 10?
rather get an sj4000 wifi
If you bought a waterproof case with the Polaroid it would still be cheaper than the session.
I noticed the daytime car footage was filmed around Parbold. Very nice.
Could you have used the little metal plate in the package underneath the cloth car top to attach it? I was thinking another magnet or steel plate would let you clamp it to thin surfaces like clothing.
I think that little magnet thing could be usefull for a dashcam function.
The cam does give good qaulity at low light, which suprised me to be honest.
If u would make a little plateau for it on the dashboard with a piece for the magnet, and a usb lead for charging.
U could stick it with the magnet easily on the dash (plug in the lead if u want or need too)
And simply turn it on or off, and when u dont need it u can simply pull it off, and put the camera away.
Only problem would maybe be the heat as u say, after a while it gets hot.
Mabie you can review new cheapest version of gopro HERO?
You didn't mention how close you can shoot? will the cube go 6" away from subject, 12"? 24" and still be in focus?
Thanks for the review! I've had the cube for over a month and I had no idea about the orientation option when you power it on or that the back piece will stick to the magnet. So thanks, man. Nice work.
And like some other folks you've spoken with, I do love the magnet. Not so much for finding steel out in the world to stick it on, but the fact that you can find bits and bobs in your garage to make your own sort of mounts.
Merry Christmas. Thanks so much for the review. This is indeed very beautiful! The design got me actually and the quality is more than enough for me.
At 17 minutes you said that you'd get sideways video, which is not something people want but previously in the video you said it had that orientation feature so you really won't get a sideways video...as long as you start the camera after attached on its side...right?
Techmoan oh no, did I just become the dumb person who asked a question I missed in the vid? That's my worst nightmare haha. I'll re-watch. Thanks :)
kellytir I think it's all covered clearly in the video. The sensor in the camera is a 16:9 oblong - that should answer your question.
Techmoan thanks! And thanks for your reviews!
I can't believe how this is better than some smartphones
great review
can you please confirm that this cam will not flip to landscape when on its side? the only orientation correction is when it's flipped upside down right?
+mushedroom's toy box - you'll see it flip to landscape in the video demonstration of the rotation.......however not every program can read the orientation flag - and you can always rotate in editing.
Techmoan thanks for the response but i was wondering if you put the camera on something sideways, using the magnet, like on the lamp post, will it always shoot video portrait style?
thank you again!
+mushedroom's toy box you can see me put the camera sideways in the video on a metal wheel and a lamppost. The sensor in this camera (like every video camera) records in an oblong area with the longer sides of the oblong being parallel to the ground when the camera is held upright. If you turn the camera on its side, this oblong then has the shorter sides parallel to the ground....as a result all cameras record vertical video (portrait) when turned on their side. The dimensions of the video in landscape are 1920x1080 pixels, so in portrait this becomes 1080x1920 pixels.
Techmoan gotcha
thanks!
Polaroid CUBE Mini Lifestyle Action is easy to use, video and still image quality is pretty good. Special it's small, very convenient. Visit plus.google.com/u/0/115436804991230069758/posts/foFXd5un17R to see more and order if you like it.
in the min 7:33 (for example) when the author of this video talks it's by the microphone of the camera or he edited the video and talks after ?
magnets are a bit bittle but you can drill and tap um, screw holes can be added to almost anything
So I'm not sure if you would be able to answer this but I would really appreciate it, so i recently recorded with the cube and at the same time i was recording my audio with a mic through the application Audacity. When I try and sync the audio i recorded with my to the video captured with the cube, the audio overtime becomes out of sync. I'm not really sure why I've had this issue before and it was a easy fix of running it through handbrake and changing the fps to constant but that didn't work this time. Does the camera record at a variable fps? This is extremely frustrating
Pretty sure the mafnet is there for sticking it onto cars. It's also concaved so it wouldn't put a single point of pressure on paint
Many thanks for the download link! I have 2 Mobius cameras, one I use as a dash cam with a super capacitor swapped out for the battery. The big reason I may buy the Polaroid is that it just went on sale for $69 and since its weather proof, will hold up better than the Mobius. But the Mobius has so many more features like time lapse!
I never thought in my life i would see such good images and video coming from a thing smaller than your pinky!. I`m quite impressed. Although the sound was indeed a little low quality. But coming from a little square toy , i guess it`s okay for now.Who knows 2 or 4 years from now.
I have tried everything, but I just can't get it working properly...mainly the issue is that the settings can't be changed. I hate it when the date and time is three years wrong...what I am possible doing wrong? I am able to take pictures and videoclips, no problem with that, just the settings is missing...
the 1080p looks really soft on this. the 808 16 v3 is able to have a higher bitrate than the cube and thats only 720p and much lighter.
They have since released a plus version that has image stabilization (but smaller FOV as a result). Have you considered doing a follow-up review of that?
Hey my Polaroid Cube didn't come with instructions booklet I had to watch your video to see how to activate the video on the cube
Yeah, looks like a hip thing for iPeople and seniors and performs rather ok it seems.
I'm curious about HTC's cam that is supposed to make its entry soon. Periscope design.
this is surely a brilliant camera and its size is amazing...
Looking at the spec and the video samples it's almost identical in features to the Polaroid XS100 action camera apart from the silly magnet. The XS also has an rotation sensor so it can record shots the right way around, however when fitted to my motorcycle I found that the slight angle of the bike being on the side stand was usually enough to rotate the video 90° and ergo ruining the quality of the video, also had the same darkening of the image when heading towards sunlight.
It is missing some sort of handle where a strap can go through. Perhaps a solution is to tape on loop tape (Velcro) to all sides and use a strap with hook tape for attachment.
my friend once told me about this amazing neat looking magnet! it's cube shaped and has wonderful colours! best magnet you can ever get.....oh yes, and it also have a built in camera if you're into cameras! great magnet! :) !
Good review of an interesting little camera. I didn't know about it or the other small one you mentioned near the end of the video. Where was the building shown at the 7 minute mark of the video? It looks like the interior of a very tall enclosed mall type building.
It's a bit disappointing to see that it films in portrait mode despite correctly orientating the image.
I don't think it's that bad that it doesn't turn on/off automatically for use as a dashcam but I generally never leave an expensive camera in my car in a visible position - that attracts thieves.
I was impressed that it stayed on your car while driving. How fast were you going?
I found a work around. but u have to use a conversation program it's time consuming though. The files WILL not work in cyber link power direct 14, windows movie maker or GoPro studio without converting. Polaroid technical support confirmed this. You can call them. If it is working on "some" editing software, that's fine. But, many won't know until they try.
