    Zink technology was developed in building W-4 on Polaroid's Waltham, Massachusetts campus - I was a security guard there. Most of the buildings on the campus were empty as Polaroid was largely defunct by then. (Zink later became a spin-out of the company and relocated elsewhere). I remember patrolling (walking) through Zink's labs late at night marveling at this new ink-in-the-paper technology. Large colorful photographs were everywhere - on lab tables, walls, etc - they were photographs taken through microscopes of exploded Zink color crystals. Each color crystal (or are they capsules?) releases it's color at a specific temperature. The photos were used to evaluate the progress they were making. I even saw printer prototypes with large heat activated print heads...building W-4 still stands today on a hill overlooking the former campus. Most of the rest of the buildings have been bulldozed and the campus is now a shopping plaza. What was once the administrative building is now a store and office building for Clark's shoes.

      Zink moved to Whitsett, NC - a huge plant that used to be owned by Konica. I think it was a film or paper coating facility for Konica at the time. Zink is a very interesting technology. I hope they continue to develop the technology to make larger printers and paper.

      I planned to give this Polaroid camera to my 7 year old nephew because he loves using my Fuji Instax instant camera (reviewed in an earlier video) ...I was in two minds because I thought it might be a bit complicated, but then the locking-up issue kiboshed that plan. He'll be getting the Fuji instead.

      All troubles aside, for the price I think this is a great gift for a kid you're trying to get interested in photography. There's something magical about getting a physical copy of the picture you just took. Even more so for this new 'all digital' generation coming up now.

    I got a Zink printer a while back to see how good it was. The images I printed out with it back then are still looking perfectly good. It's quite pleasing if you hold a soldering iron or heat gun to a bit of the zinc paper as it suddenly changes through all the colours. It must be incredibly precise to be able to do that consistently.

    I have this camera and I take it everywhere! I feel like we’re so spoiled with the high-tech shots that phones, dslrs and whatnot take now that we expect every camera this generation to produce the same quality. This is a camera that shoots, edits and prints instantly, AND saves copies of photos in digital format. I’m pretty happy with that!

    Hey, Techmoan, I just wanted to appreciate the fact that you review this kind of products in such a deep and comprenhensive manner, even though they may seem like dull things for teenage girls, there is always something special in the analogic-real life photography and actually having to store the photos as the precious memories they hold. Your videos exceed in quality, you never stop to amaze me with new and interesting gadgets.
    Thank you, you make our lifes a little more "analogic".

      @ellielopez1615 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom5tom Entertainment Yeah, I wanted the screenless one before I seen this one but I didn't really like the quality of the printed photos but the only reason why I think this one is ok because it takes photos, videos, prints them out from either the camera or your phone. So with or without paper, you can still use it. I have one from the 80s & hasn't been touched since last fall. Film is too expensive. 8 shots for 23$. So in comparison of others, this is somewhat better. I do wish it was cheaper though. :)

      nostalgia nerd i love your channel and i think Polaroid just don't have the funds to produce anything substantial, they are a bit cheepo, they are always selling TVs in asda. great idea though about printable paper on the go just doesnt turn out as expected, nobody wants physical copies anymore just a thousand photos of random crap because memory is cheaper....

    • @FaridDE

    • @Pyrlixx
      @Pyrlixx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      IMHO the camera quality is not even on-par with one of those "regular" smartphone cameras. It seems that my old OnePlus One makes better photos and videos compared to that Polaroid camera.
      Even my old Samsung compact-camera I bought 3 years ago for 160€ makes better photos and video. It surely makes no print-outs but well... you pay for the Polaroid name here.
      But hey, mobile digital cameras are completely new thing to the technology world ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ A half-decent lens, better sensor and good AF wont cost that much extra... the tech is there.

    those little beepy noises right at the end... i love hearing little blips like that. i really appreciated how the original ghost in the shell movie included such noises in the "POV" shots. the CPU-whine type stuff. (even though it actually annoys me when i get those over headphone jacks... which were a big part of why i switched to macs back in the day. nowadays though onboard audio on PCs has all these separation and shielding things going on, and thankfully seems to just be a thing of the past.)

      If you think £2.10 a picture is a steep price, you should check out large format. You can get up into the $15-20 when shooting 8x10s, and that's just the film price before you even develop it.
      You do however, have an 8x10 negative to work with then, so it can be more than worth the price if you're pointing the camera at the right things at the right time.

    I've noticed the traditional instant cameras are making a comeback, too. I went to a party recently and several of the young women (College age) were carrying mini instant cameras around that take really small photos. When I was a teenager, I had a little green instant camera that took teeny-tiny little pictures, some you could buy with a sticker back and others with fun boarders. It was a big bummer when those were discontinued and you couldn't find refills for them anymore.

      They haven't gone anywhere - they don't appear on every video. There are usually one or two videos per month maximum with a comedy outro.

    Great new outro! May I suggest you consider using for the end card the oscilloscope footage you were using as a transition? The reel-to-reel intro is a classic, but it's already at the beginning of the video, and I think that oscilloscope footage is really cool-looking. Just a suggestion, of course!

    I was really surprised to see that this was actually a modern product, what an interesting market choice. This video was very informative, though I doubt I'll be considering this camera.
    Have a nice day.

    *IT IS ADORABLE* how the chap talks. He says "a little bit" in places where there is nothing little about the issue, so he should rather say just "a bit", "quite a bit" or even "quite a chunk" instead.

    my family used the Polaroid Snap (not touch) last year on vacation. While indoor pics were dark, it served the purpose of allowing anyone to pick it up and snap a pic to capture a moment on the beach or around the pool or playing pirates! It was especially nice because we were trying to leave the phones indoors and really unplug from technology a bit. We have a lovely scrapbook full of these photos - augmented by a few select photos printed from our phones. So I was considering the touch this year for a little better quality - and frankly we had a hard time framing things within the tiny viewfinder, so this screen looked great. After seeing your review, I'm still on the fence. For this sort of purpose, what are your thoughts on this camera?

    I'd love to see a proper modern day Polaroid, as many pictures I take with any digital camera usually just get locked away on some old hard drive or even deleted. There's so many photos I would've never had seen again if it weren't for my old Polaroid.

      Store JPG copies of all of your photos on your personal PC and set your screensaver to do a photo slideshow. That's built in to just about any operating system. Configure it to go to slide show in random order after about 5 minutes of inactivity, and you'll be able to enjoy some gems while you're talking on the phone, etc.

    Thank you for all your great videos :-) Always a pleasure to watch.
    The grey BG in the picture of the soft toy at 12:55 is due to the camera's auto exposure trying to meter the BG to come out mid-tone grey. All light meters do this. Ideally the compensation for this should be made at the time of exposure using the EV controls (if the camera has them!). A black BG would'nt come out black - it too would come out a bit pasty!

    Hey I just wanted to mention something, this camera is very sharp like you said in the video. So the only problem was the colouring I know you mention this already but your can adjust the brightness and all of that good stuff like the place you take it... (you can chose like flouresent lighting) I think they will update their designing for this product and fix the bugs. And if you want to wait for a new product thennnn.... good luck with finding it in the first place and paying the price $$$... I was on the edge of saying no but these cameras can be adjusted with filters... I really like the way to make it a sticker and the printer the self.... Along with the borders and decorative stickers you can apply... The colors won’t be POPPING put it has that thing that makes it look slightly older witch I love if you put them as memorable photos because they will start to age anyways (the photos). I don’t like to price individual paper, I just like to price the pack of them itself. Anyways thanks for the video it helped me understand but I’ll just buy it for fun anyways! 🤗🤗🤗

    I'm actually pretty pleased with the color reproduction for a niche/novelty camera. The prints seem to be lacking though, I expected the color issues being thermal based but it's sort of grainy and blocky too. Well done as always Techmoan!

    I'm using this camera for cataloging memories purposes, take a photo of an heirloom, write on the back where it's from and store it in a box for future reference. Sharp photo quality isn't needed for this purpose and it's easy to use so my parents can use it as well.

    The way the printer works is pretty interesting. I would have assumed it used ordinary Polaroid film, and then had an internal OLED screen or something, which would momentarily light up to expose the film to the image.
    Now I wonder if what I just described above could be a viable way of doing it.
