Hello.... Thank you very much for the information on Polaroid Cube pluse... I know it is quite along ago since you made that video. I wonder if you could help me to purchase the black color Polaroid cube+ OR anything similar with better specifications, cheaper, and more.... if that is possible. I checked on Amazon but unfortunately they don't have black colour and it is confusing me in terms of costs & quality.!!!??? Once again well done in your work 👏 and thank you! 😃 👌
Here's the information from the video description regarding the black-frames issue (which isn't an issue). "UPDATE - BLACK FRAMES in 1080p60 I've now noticed that the black frames were not present in the original files, they only appeared after the files were imported into iMovie. It therefore looks likely that this is an iMovie bug rather than any issue with the Cube+".
+Techmoan Yes- avid and severely addicted FPV fiend here. I have considered giving this cam a shot on one of the race drones. The session works a treat, but is pricey and the cube form factor is a bit tricky to mount on many of the newer, race oriented frames. I run a league near DC
+Hiway warning. Due to magnet, drone can have side affect. look at other youtube videos. I tried my with FY G4 and brush-less magnetic motor just got crazy due to strong magnet n cube.
lpka I will be using them on racing quads- the magnet will not have any adverse effect unless it were to be placed directly on the flight controller. Even then, these racing drones are flown full manual mode with no magnetometer, accelerometer, or gyroscope, or gps devices present or operational. Obliged though!
You may be interested to know that the Cube+ WiFi utilises the 802.11N standard...this explains the snappy WiFi streaming performance. I couldn't find the WiFi specs for the Cube+ anywhere, however an interrogation of the WiFi signal reveals that it is 802.11n 2.4ghz. Also - the battery life whist recording in 1080p30 with the WiFi turned on and streaming to a phone is 75 mins...so the WiFi knocks about 10 mins off the battery life.
That magnet test was inspirationally simple, although I did think you were having a stroke near the end when you said "Supoorted" twice.... until I noticed the dialog box text XD
Hi Mat. Love your reviews (the best I've seen) - Just wanted to let you know I purchased a Polaroid Cube+ purely based on your review and I'm very happy with it. It's "exactly" as you described and demonstrated. Sample videos on your website was what sold it for me. Thanks heaps. Looking forward to seeing more of your reviews. Cheers Will
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but in the time since this review's been posted, a stream-to-facebook/facebook live option has been added to the app. And it actually works quite well. Just a neat little tidbit.
I used my Cube+ for the first time in years this morning. I'm still amazed at this little action cam and quality of the video. Too bad it's no longer manufactured.
Trust no one could explain better than this. Full detail in short time. You could reduce by max 4-5 min. Loved it hope you have same performance with all your other videos, I am a follower now, yes you EARNED a Subscriber
I purchased one of these just because of this review. I think there is a newer model now, but this one will do exactly what I need it to do. Love your videos, Techmoan!
i dont know what your other videos are but i need to subscribe to you. This is one of the BEST reviews i have seen on a product. You even explain the minute details. very meticulous.
The best part about requiring the use of an application is that they can just drop support for this camera when the new one comes out and it doesn't work any more. Pretty cool!
I'll be blunt, thats a bloody impressive camera. The refinement of several things over the previous model exceeds the sum of its parts. That lag free streaming!
I stumbled upon this review last night. I had forgotten about this cam. Luckily I found one last night on Kohl's for $59 us, yes a plus for $59. Now let's hope it comes in.
Funny I was about to drop the same thing but got two if them I do still have the Xs80 which is like too but this Lil one hasta few more features and just order a huge 18 piece accessory thing since I like to Mnt bike the review sold me too going to run the magnet on restored GT Dyno on the next big bmx ride take it to see how it handles jumping if magnet stays put. But good video we got a good deal on this item on clearance... Cheers
Mat, brilliant review once again, very detailed! Question - Do you think the magnet is strong enough to sit on the tank of my motorbike without sliding off? (it's faired if that makes a difference)
+Techmoan Thanks Mat, Also is there another way of donating to the channel at all? I've seen you're on Patreon but it's not really my thing. PayPal gift perhaps? Or maybe you still do that one where we can 'buy you a pint?'
Helpful review; I've been planning on buying this little camera for some time now. Here in Canada, it sells for $150. I plan to use it to get some shots where a larger camera won't fit. I think the video quality is decent enough so you can use it to capture secondary shots when using another main camera. I'd say its #1 selling feature is that its tiny, and #2, its not super expensive. Its a device you can carry around in your pocket and whip it out when you need to shoot a bit of quick video. And another bonus is that most people won't even realize its a video camera. (sneaky) And the one thing I learned from your review is that it has timelapse mode. I shoot quite a bit of video this way already. (hyperlapse) I was not impressed with the original CUBE, but I think the CUBE+ has been improved enough to make it useful to ad to the list of other cameras I have. For the record, I already own the Polaroid XS-100i, I find it to be a decent action cam, I use it almost daily.
see the flicker in the background at 5:15 - thats what happens when you use 30 FPS in 50hz countries. - this is why webcams have a 50hz/60hz setting - the frequency mismatch causes strobing.
Hey TechMoan, Nice review... I just wanna know that How do you shoot this video... where do you fix the camera when 1:52 in this video ... What camera are you using for it... how do you shoot so closely....? Please guide me.... Thanks in advance...
Thanks for the outstanding review! I appreciate your effort to cover everything so thoroughly. I'd love to see more reviews and tech advice for audio cassette decks. Trying to refurbish a Tascam 302 Mk II deck.
What a superb little camera. I think we can take for granted modern technology. If you remember old camcorders (Video 8), and VHS-C, this little cube is a miracle.
Just the video I have been looking for. I am trying to decide on which camera I want to start out with on my video journey. I have just started a channel and I want a cheap camera to play with until I know what I really need. Most of the cameras suggested are over $300.00 here in the US. Thank you so much for this video.
Does it autorotate? and if now how to rotate it? The magnet is an awesome idea but if it wont rotate, its a problem since I want to stick it to the side of the car and I HATE 9:16
that camera looks bloody good. And I love seeing Liverpool getting its fair share of TH-cam exposure. More You tubers out of the capital, and in good cities like Manchester and Liverpool. And maybe York
That's a great little camera. I just bought an iPhone. I'm still stuck with getting a camera that accepts a microphone from my helmet and continuous power. That camera has all the tiny buttons. I like the one big button and the magnet feature. And of course the dark to light. What an incredible camera. And as always, a great review.
I have watched a lot of you tube how to videos and you are the best at explaining the items you are commenting on . Thanks much and keep up the good work .
@10:25 You could have framed the flag poles by rotating the camera up a bit instead of recording so much of the ground. Fantastic review and fantastic product. Very impressive.
+Ted Soto It was attached to a knee height bracket holding a chain -it wasn't possible to rotate it because the bracket was a flat surface. If you do get a Cube+ you'll soon discover that there aren't that many magnetic surfaces around that can act as a suitable mount...I was very fortunate that St George's hall in Liverpool has an old chain link fence around it.
Techmoan Interesting. I immediately ordered one after watching your review (I've never done that before). I have a trip coming up and this seems to be a great way to capture hands free video and no need for lots of equipment either. Also, I've given some thought to a clothing mounting device. I'm thinking a hard drive magnet would hold it very well. So all I have to do is wear it with the magnet on the inside of my shirt or waist area and the camera on the outside. Keeping it still will take some practive I'm sure. I've got some time to play with it before the trip thankfully. Love love love your channel.
I was wanting to do some tests with Sample footage. I tried the 1080p60 Buskers footage, but it seems to not have any audio. Now I know that perhaps it could be codecs etc, so I have tried VLC, and used a couple of different tools to work out what audio is on the clips, and they are all reporting that the clip has no audio. Can you confirm that that sample has no audio? BTW - Love the videos. Very good reviews. I keep thinking I recognise the area you are driving around. Is it Poynton? Im from Macclesfield.
Watching you handle such a small device so close to the drain grates early in the review, sent a shiver down my spine. If it were me, I would probably have fumbled and dropped it. ;)
So, using the app, could this camera be used as a real-time Wi-Fi monitor without actually recording anything. Say, for example, I'm waiting for a parcel to arrive. Could I set this near a window looking out toward the street so I could see when the parcel truck arrives even if I'm in another part of the house?
If I may ask, why are the comments for the Xiaomi Yi video disabled? The camera is $64 shipped, it has a great community support and tons of features (even more than the gopro) and you can get a gopro style case for it for less than $10 shipped. It also runs 35 Mbit/s after a stupidly easy update.
Did you come across any rolling shutter effects in any of your testing? If the sensor readout is quick enough for use as an action cam, it might be a nice cheap gopro alternative for b-roll / multi-angle stuff. :)
This is the best review with loads of great information. I had the original Cube but it fell off the magnet and is lost. I did like it however. One question I have is.....I had to spend more money in mini SD cards than the cost of the camera before I could find one that that actually worked but since I've lost it I don't know which it was. Can you tell me which card brand you use with the new cube? Also is the wifi model even worse on power than the original? Also I was able to run my cube for up to 4 hours with a power bank hooked up......is this likely to be the same with the plus? Also, one more question if you'd be so kind.....I personally liked the 5 minute video segments. Since the sound never worked I had to run it through a video convertor which was rather slow so I found the 5 min segments useful so I'd only convert the small percentage of video that I actually needed. It seems that the plus model will run clips as well as indefinite but will the clips run continuously? Again, great review and thanks Dave
I loved the little music video you put together! I always watch your videos and most of these things I'll never get but they are just so interesting to watch. Thank you.
Great review! In wifi mode can you use the smartphone app to turn the camera on and off via wifi like you can with the Hero Session (i.e. camera in standby/off mode, but wifi on and connected)? That's an important feature to me and can't find any information on the Cube website.
Best feature is the wifi connect mode... which you need a smartphone for... which has all of the camera features, plus more... can you really justify purchasing this over a go pro or similar pocket size action cam?
What a great review and instructional video you created... It is your video that convinced me to purchase the Polaroid Cube +.....can't wait for it to be delivered. thanks again.
I'm a little confused for capturing Timelapse. I set the timelapse option via the app but then the whole thing shuts off in like three minutes before I start timelapse. When I go to record it just goes back to 1920x1080 30fps. Is there any way to get this thing to 'remember' what you set or do you have to set-and-record timelapse every single time? Its so clunky that you have to ad-hoc the wifi to connect to it.
Great review. Did you find the sound quality on the cube plus the same as on the original? I've seen a few reviews complaining about this on the latest version. Thanks.
Can I ask an unrelated question? Do you know of a camera that has a mini screen that would enable you to watch in real time what the camera is recording and if it is even on? I mean a separate screen rather than a phone and linked by wi fi. I ask because I don't use a mobile phone (Hate the bloody things) and also, I have a pal who uses his camera on his bike and he hates having to use his phone to check if the camera attached to his helmet is still on, while he is riding.
Awesome video, great explanation on using this action cam. I just received one as a small gift. So had to explore TH-cam on how to use. Your video was very informative compared to other videos I've seen. Cant compare really learn anything with the 4 to 5 minute videos posted on here lol. Thank you for your info.
late to the party but maybe you have it on your shelf collecting dust and can check. can you record with the usb using a charging brick? did it take well to vibrations? im thinking about this or a go pro session for a camera inside a small aircraft and the nature of the application is abit buzzy. i havent had any issues with the AEE s71 or go pro hero 4 but im really looking for the fly on the wall size thanks!
Hi Sir, I'm curious about the frame to use with tripod. Doesn't it has any metal material at the back? Otherwise it could prevent the camera from rattling. Anyway, as always, thank you for reviewing. 😀
thanks for the video and specially for the sample clips. This camera is a little bit more expensive here in Chile and as I heard the audio is not good at all I've been checking different reviews to see if I will still buy it or not. I heard the firmware update made the audio much better and I was old by polaroid staff the audio's max capacity and olume can be found by playing the clips in vlc media player, could you try making a comparison among the players?
+Ignacio Sepúlveda (IgnolisisX) Update: I downloaded some sample clips from your link, One sounds awesome, another one barely sounds and the one with the guys busking hs no sound at all...and just like I was told, I have to play them on vlc player so i was wondering if you had any problem when using them for this video?and which program did you use to edit it?
Just a bit off topic but I would like to know what software you use for editing and compiling your videos? They always look professional and at the moment I can only load single files to youtube - I would like to combine clips, fade and add comments. Maybe add background music. Nothing fancy or complex!
Thanks for the review, after watching this I have just bought one to compliment the Gopros on the motorbikes.Had it an hour now and have just got some video of the garden birds, so far I am impressed.
+Techmoan I have ordered a case from ebay to use Gopro mounts. Problem is the vibrations on both Ducatis. The BMWs are smooth, but we don't use them much anymore. I am sure that I can come up with something using tyraps etc!
I have it too, pretty happy. But sometimes imagesare a bit washed out. I wonder if there is a way to compensate the exposure at -1/3 or - 2/3 stops. How does it compare with Git2 / ThiEye / SJ Cam M20?
Wonderful presentation! Most informative. Thank you for sharing. In your opinion which model has the better picture. Some reviewers choose the "Original" over the "Plus"
Great review, but could you clear something up for me? Will the camera connect via WiFi to a Windows Phone? I have an HTC One M8 Windows and a Nokia 928. The Cube website says: Features: WiFi on the fly Stream your footage in real time with iOS and Android compatible WiFi capabilities. Need a viewfinder? Your WiFi-enabled Polaroid CUBE+ can pair with any smart device for real-time view controls and shot framing right from your device screen. If i read this correctly, I can control the Cube+ from a Windows Phone but I can't live stream to it.
Had one of these Cube+'s but sold it due to poor audio quality. Original cube had good audio quality and the Cube+ uses the same microphone and even after the latest FW fix it was still not good. If you want good audio, buy either a Sony for the best audio or GoPro's are good also.
Your video review is Awesome . I had been looking to purchase for my young daughter a video / camera that doesn't cost an arm and leg. This seems just the ticket . I like the idea you can attach it to arms / helmets and on the bikes its . so when she's enjoying her multi sports be good to play back and see her face. I Like the fact it's water proof too with the right attachment. I would be gutted if it was to fall out of the accessories. Tfs.. 👍
hi, i really love your review with loads of information. which do you reckon captures best in low light.. i'm thinking to get one and hopefully could capture some aurora ..and maybe timelapse?
You filmed in Liverpool! So much better than the blandness of Manchester where you usually go. St. Georges Hall is my favourite of all my home city's buildings, and it looks as amazing as ever here. That place is so beautiful that you might have the problem of it making even the worst of cameras a lot better than they are! ;-). When you ended up in our China Town you were a stone throw from my house. The kettle is on here for you in future if required mate.
+Techmoan glad to see you concur mate. I'm very proud of this place, especially St.Georges Hall. Earlier this week I went to Plymouth and was blown away by the place. So many beautiful buildings there from the fruitful days that it was a port of worldwide significance, just like Liverpool, right through to the contemporary styled ones. I was shocked how at impressed I was. 4.5 hours drive though :-(

Another great review but I'm a bit confused, if it's a Polaroid, where's the slot for the picture to come out? Or am I just showing my age!
Yes, that's just age related :)) Polaroid went bankrupt a good while ago, and a Chinese firm bought their name.
awesome awesome video (and i suppose it helps that its such a great product). nice to see you giving the musicians in the square some props!
Did you come across any rolling shutter effects in any of your testing? If the sensor readout is quick enough for use as an action cam, it might be a nice cheap gopro alternative for b-roll / multi-angle stuff. :)
good review. The time and effort definitely shows.
Wow is that Liverpool? So beautiful. By the way how do you take your footage to a desktop to edit? Thanks.
Again, great review and thanks
Dave
I loved the little music video you put together! I always watch your videos and most of these things I'll never get but they are just so interesting to watch. Thank you.
Being the back door magnetic, doesn't it afects the card?
Regards
Duarte
how about the sound quality? Is it really that bad as it is said in several reviews?
I haven't used any of these before, but they look intriguing. How would you compare the Polaroid to say, a low end GoPro?
+Chris Bennett It really comes down to what you prefer - as you can see, the video quality is fine.
Any chance that you will do any dictation machine reviews, I saw one of the older videos that featured a micro cassette dictation machine.
Hmm, were you wearing a Mi Band Fitness tracker in this video?
Great review! In wifi mode can you use the smartphone app to turn the camera on and off via wifi like you can with the Hero Session (i.e. camera in standby/off mode, but wifi on and connected)? That's an important feature to me and can't find any information on the Cube website.
built-in sd card, built-in battery, slo-mo feature, great app. i'm sold to this.
Nice test !
What about underwater movie quality, did you tried ?
Best feature is the wifi connect mode... which you need a smartphone for... which has all of the camera features, plus more... can you really justify purchasing this over a go pro or similar pocket size action cam?
Love the street musicians performing that Waterboys tune.
Thanks for the reviews. I am going to buy an action camera just not sure which one.
I did not see the Adventure cam ten reviewed.
Really good video. Ive been looking for an action camera with my features. How does the Cube+ compare to a similar GoPro?
I really do appreciate the detailed reviews you provide. Thanks
+Techmoan How could Poloroid not have known that their original cube had a orientation sensor!?
How's the battery life?
thanks for the video and specially for the sample clips.
+Ignacio Sepúlveda (IgnolisisX) those are the files I imported into iMovie and did no work on them at all other than trimming them for length.
Just a bit off topic but I would like to know what software you use for editing and compiling your videos? They always look professional and at the moment I can only load single files to youtube - I would like to combine clips, fade and add comments. Maybe add background music. Nothing fancy or complex!
2009bracken the youtube editor can do the things you asked for. so start there
nice vid of my home town. im thinking of getting the cube+ for my race drone. do you think it will do the job.
thanks
Proper comprehensive review . Best on U tube
Thanks for the review, after watching this I have just bought one to compliment the Gopros on the motorbikes.Had it an hour now and have just got some video of the garden birds, so far I am impressed.
+Bob Thompson Good news, hope you've found a good way to attach it to the bike.
+Techmoan I have ordered a case from ebay to use Gopro mounts. Problem is the vibrations on both Ducatis. The BMWs are smooth, but we don't use them much anymore. I am sure that I can come up with something using tyraps etc!
+Techmoan PS having followed you channel for years now, I would just like to say what a great job you are doing.
+Bob Thompson Thanks for that.
does anyone know if the cube will fit inside the housing for the gopro hero 4 session ? looks like it will
I wouldn't be optimistic
I have it too, pretty happy. But sometimes imagesare a bit washed out. I wonder if there is a way to compensate the exposure at -1/3 or - 2/3 stops. How does it compare with Git2 / ThiEye / SJ Cam M20?
Wonderful presentation! Most informative. Thank you for sharing. In your opinion which model has the better picture. Some reviewers choose the "Original" over the "Plus"
Really great video Mr. Moan ;)
- It is nice that you put that much time and effort into pretty much every single product. Keep up the good work
Wasn't expecting the shots of you driving through Skem/Upholland.
Great review, but could you clear something up for me? Will the camera connect via WiFi to a Windows Phone? I have an HTC One M8 Windows and a Nokia 928. The Cube website says:
Features:
WiFi on the fly
Stream your footage in real time with iOS and Android compatible WiFi capabilities.
Need a viewfinder? Your WiFi-enabled Polaroid CUBE+ can pair with any
smart device for real-time view controls and shot framing right from
your device screen.
Came for the excellent review, stayed for that music! Really enjoyed that! :D
Thanks Matt, much loves!
Superb little thing. Very tempted!
I really like your reviews. Because of them I`ve ordered a Git2, but still waiting for it.
+Lee Hodge Liverpool flows much better as a city than Manchester. Much more pleasant to walk around.
4.5 hours drive though :-(
Does it still record in 5 minute intervals like the old model?
As always, a thorough and thoughtful review. Thanks.
Is there any gimbal for the polaroid cube +
