This was a snippet on breaking down the game of basketball. All made valuable points on studying the game and the individuals who you face. I don’t know the study habits of the players in the league today but players like Gil, KMart and learned from those b4 them. As they spoke about Kobe, you can understand Kobe studied and worked on every aspect of his game so he had no weaknesses. The Mamba had excellent footwork (he trained with soccer players), could shoot with either hand and he could go left or right. Kobe also studied his opponents as well so he knew how to defend them. He knew their strengths, their weaknesses and their tendencies. Kobe was a true student of the game and a true savant.
Obviously not the same thing. But I once knew a D1 coach for volleyball (top 10 team). Never played the game. He got in to coaching because his little girl was playing and they needed a coach. He didn't know anything at the time so he started watching games. And over time he started understanding so much more than any of the other coaches. There's something to just watching the sport and learning.
Exactly. Everything with Gil is always if you weren't a superstar your opinion is less than mine. By his logic MJ is the only one who can give advice. All the greatest coaches of all time weren't all high levels pros. Tons of analysts too. His mindset is so close minded. Maybe he would have been a better defender is he actually read the scouting reports
Gil started his take by saying none of the scouts ever played in the NBA, which is not true. Many has played basketball at some level, and some have in the NBA. There's been many Gil's recent takes, where Gil has been making stuff up that are not true. In this video he sounded like he was repeating somebody else's words. Probably Dahntay Jones'. So most of the things could be true.
I’m glad we have more shows and podcasts about this because the average fan thinks they know so much where is the players actually know and will tell you the truth not the nonsense at the media tries to push
The scouting reports worked however they don't move the needle the way an elite or talented player does. In the NBA level, every little bit matters. Just look at Kobe Bryant, in addition to the amount of work he puts into the gym he also uses scouting reports all the time. There's so many wild stories of him knowing odd tendencies of every player, arena, ref, etc.. As Norris Cole said, you aren't necessarily making Kobe score less, you're making Kobe less efficient. And when you get to the conference finals or finals, the scouting report could determine the outcome of the game.
Tony Allen defended Kobe very well during the regular season and postseason. Kobe also struggled in the 2004 finals against the Pistons shooting 38% from the field.
@@fatpatlives1998 The Pistons made defensive adjustments against Kobe after game 2,shut the Lakers 3 point shooters down, let Big Ben and Eldon Campbell guard Shaq one-on-one. Gary Payton was useless in this series-USELESS. Karl Malone had injuries hinder him early in the series,Rick Fox and Horace Grant were also injured.
Gilbert is talking like he was a good defender, and he wasn´t detailed, he was a good scorer. The problem with those players like Giannis, Luka and others mentioned (that Gilbert discredit so blatantly), is that even if you know where he is going when he is frustrated, to have the ability in an instant (on the court, on game) to connect your brain with your own body parts and react on time is not possible, usually is too late or not well executed and the guy got a foul. I always remember when Kobe and Jordan were on court, and they were talking about the body movements and feet angles, that´s a level of detailed, like Rodman talking about the way the fingers in a certain play help the ball move and he checked the way it rotates to guess the direction after the ball touch the backboard or the rim, he prefer to see the way his teammates shoot to have an idea and be in the best position to get the rebound. The same goes to defense, Joe Dumars, Byron Scott, Jordan, Pippen, Kobe, this people of that level of DEFENSE DEATILED could tell you stuff like that, but they know some people or movements are even beyond their best capabilities, experience or speed to counter and move on time. Alan Iverson crossed Jordan on the first season they played against each other just to put an example.
That was Gil saying the scouts have never played, which means it's not true. Many of the scouts have played at least at some level, and many in the NBA. Gil has been making stuff up in his recent takes. Gil's defense used to look so bad, he actually must've discarded all scouting reports.
First time I met Gilbert Arenas was in Tucson AZ at the park mall, Mike Bibby and Micheal Dickerson were making an appearance at a card shop and Gil showed up, messy baby fro with UofA shorts! Goodtimes
Kobe was a student of the game. Basically , you guard me center way. im gonna study and beat you on that move. Then, I'll wait for you to bring another move so i can study and get better at my job goat no doubt 💯 💪
"Jokes on you", and "good luck". Coming from the best of the best. The only thing they could do was maybe throw off Kobe's rhythm. That's all they could do. It's so cool to hear the details of how these NBA pros are thinking. It becomes martial arts with a basketball. They're slowing it down and explaining how they think.
Shoutout Gil for mentioning Kobe’s ability to change his shot pocket. Another one of the little things that separates Kobe from other greats.

GilL you top 3 when it comes to this understanding about basketball period.. you top 3 bro.. and that's Coming from me
Really not this was good but that’s glazing lol
People who guarded Kobe in 2004-2006 probably had a much different experience than people who guarded him later
This great talk about Kobe might make me subscribe to this channel
Agent zero my favorite nba podcaster
Stop meat glazing
Shump
I love when players talk about defense. So interesting as a basketball fan to hear.
Tony Allen defended Kobe very well during the regular season and postseason. Kobe also struggled in the 2004 finals against the Pistons shooting 38% from the field.
Yup, but it was TEAM defense like Kmart said. The Pistons were phenomenal defenders that year.
FIRST TEAM ALL DEFENCE !! Love tony fr
04 finals was weird he played great in game 2 but after that the team quit
@@fatpatlives1998 The Pistons made defensive adjustments against Kobe after game 2,shut the Lakers 3 point shooters down, let Big Ben and Eldon Campbell guard Shaq one-on-one. Gary Payton was useless in this series-USELESS. Karl Malone had injuries hinder him early in the series,Rick Fox and Horace Grant were also injured.
Tayshaun on Kobe was fairly a problem 6’9 “ with long arms
This episode is amazing If you love defense you’ll understand
"Let's try an keep it to 29"☠️🤣🤣
EXCELLENT point by K. Don’t just show the opponents’ makes in film sessions.
Dahntay Jones pushed Kobe in the back while he was in the air . I guess that was his scouting report
Lmao 6:55 "which, he eventually developed that shit" Watching Kobe live growing up was different.
Kobe was the best scorer ever, no question about it.
Rip to the 🐐. It still stings when I think about you're gone. I was young and wasn't able to make money to meet you just even once. 😔
Mike and Kobe are 1a and 1b all time in the goat 🐐 🐐conversation 🥶🥶👿👿🏀🏀🔥🔥💯
No other podcast do i constantly hear people swallowing. When they reach for the cup mute there mic it’s not hard
Just remembered that reverse spin on Kenyon Martin..
Lol, so the entirety of all NBA scouting departments are useless because they didn't play, huh? Bit of a hot take
That was Gil saying the scouts have never played, which means it's not true. Many of the scouts have played at least at some level, and many in the NBA. Gil has been making stuff up in his recent takes.
Gil's defense used to look so bad, he actually must've discarded all scouting reports.
Cold with the Left.. and remember Kenyon played on the biggest Stages
Kobe da god 🎉8/24/2
First time I met Gilbert Arenas was in Tucson AZ at the park mall, Mike Bibby and Micheal Dickerson were making an appearance at a card shop and Gil showed up, messy baby fro with UofA shorts! Goodtimes
Who else high?
Kobe is one of the greatest fundamentalist ever and he was cerebral, who can honestly guard a guy that is that coordinated
.... "He's worked on ALL defeciencies".... 💯 Mamba
Kids in this era NEED Gil a coach. Whether it’s in the NBA OR College
Kobe was trouble from the passer fire... 🔥
The way gill talks about Kobe story is like how Charlie Murphy talk about Hollywood on the Dave Chappelle show
For the scouting report to say good luck when it comes to Kobe, another example of why it's Kobe, MJ & everyone else
Where was Rashad for this segment? Somewhere on his knees praying in front of Kobe statue I bet.
I miss my 🐐. Kobe Bean Bryant
This was a nice convo
The fact that the man has counter for a double team and hedging that makes him a very skillful scorer..
The scouting and video report should show clips of the best defenders defending a person.
I wish Kobe was still here.
Kobe was a student of the game. Basically , you guard me center way. im gonna study and beat you on that move. Then, I'll wait for you to bring another move so i can study and get better at my job goat no doubt 💯 💪
Watching shark vids to guard Iverson 😂
"Jokes on you", and "good luck". Coming from the best of the best. The only thing they could do was maybe throw off Kobe's rhythm. That's all they could do. It's so cool to hear the details of how these NBA pros are thinking. It becomes martial arts with a basketball. They're slowing it down and explaining how they think.
PLEASE DO A TOPIC TALKING TODAY AND PAST PLAYERS TENDENCIES. Kmart face about jt side step killed me😭😭😭😭
Gil mentioning "detail" is ironic, because that was the name of Kobe's show on ESPN, where he was analyzing other players game.💯💯
GIL SALUTE 👊🏾 "GUARDING KOBE GOOD LUCK" 😂😂😂😂 LONG LIVE KING MAMBA 🙏🏾👑😥💜💛💜 LMCPGMARLEY TAPPING IN💯
