1:26 Ness is not a zoner. His kit encourages a more mix up style of play since he has a better time being next to his opponent vs being far away from them. Moves like PK Fire help him keep his opponent in place to set up for combos. Pk Thunder is good for helping Ness send his opponent flying towards him to continue applying damage. If you play him like a zoner, he only ever has one projectile out at all times, making him easier to approach.
@@GameMasterWLC You’re absolutely right. Many are unaware of just *how* many archetypes in this game incorporate projectiles; they’re NOT all zoners just because they have a projectile or two, EVEN if the projectiles are somewhat centralizing. For instance, did you know that in Ultimate, Villager isn’t a zoner? Even though his forward and back aerials are incredibly good at zoning, Villager’s archetype leans towards what’s called “Turtle”, sharing an archetype with Byleth, Corrin and Hero. Ness is officially a Grappler, sharing an archetype with DK, Ganondorf, and Incineroar, among others. For anyone wondering, the premier Zoners include but are not limited to, ROB, Mewtwo, Olimar, and Zelda, just to give an idea of what a zoner looks like.
I like this video, but I have no idea why HC keeps calling Ness a zoner. He has a projectile that only goes vertically, a projectile that only goes a roll's distance, and a projectile that relinquishes all control of the character for a few seconds. You cannot win with these projectiles alone lol.
Some things you didn't mention about Ultimate Ness: 1. PK Flash's main buff was less how much better it could edgeguard (PK Thunder 1 and the lingering hitboxes on his yo-yo are still better for that), and more that it became a better combo starter with its uncharged variant. 2. Ness has historically struggled with recovery due to other characters' abilities to either edgeguard Ness, counter PK Thunder 2, or absorb PK Thunder 1 (Rosalina and Villager). In Ultimate, when everyone got directional airdodges back, Ness's was one of the ones that covered the most distance by far. This alleviates essentially all the risks of PK Thunder and may even be the main reason he's risen in viability between games.
weirdly enough, starting in Brawl, to smash 4 to ult, Ness is able to take a stock from a majority of the cast, including some heavies from 0%, w/exactly 2 pk fires and one PK thunder 2(at its max launch power. so Ness has to be close enough for that to work. too far away and PK thunder 2 won't kill.) if done in this exact order around the middle of Final Destination(where the 2nd person's spawned at start), a majority of the cast will lose a stock in both smash 4 and ult. unfortunately I can't speak for DI on PK thunder 2 hit, cuz I've never seen a single person live this in Smash 4+Ult when all 3 moves connect, nor known a person who actually mastered DI to attempt to live it, aside from knowing how some people could get out of Smash 4's PK Fire impossibly fast w/DI. this's a surprisingly obscure Ness fact for over the past 10 years that somehow, very few people know of. and shockingly also has 0 video of, which's always surprised me. because its so simple, yet somehow no one's known about it or has video of it. its all easy enough to avoid, but when it works it takes a stock very quickly. but I can confirm Ness is able to do that in just those 3 moves, in that exact order, across all 3 games. I can confirm this's more consistent in Smash 4+Ult compared to brawl, as brawl's more iffy, but it does work there, including on Bowser(a heavy) granted in brawl it makes sense cuz its iffier there, but smash 4 and Ult are the stranger ones, cuz it works a lot easier in those 2 games (when ignoring factors like smash 4's broken shields or Perfect Parrier players in ult).
Ness back kick in melee to me was good kill potential honestly it's how I'd get my kills cause I was a knee of justice like Zelda's. Air side kick made it so. There was a kill force to an other wise. Only throw and base ball bat edge guard
Hey Honest Contest, just wanted to tell you some things about Smash 64 Ness! 1. Ness has a cool movement tech called DJC Rush. Basically his run is really slow but his initial dash is really fast, so you can use a really fast DJC fair so it cancels the run and lets you dash again. 2. Ness has some good recent performances in 64. At Supernova 2024, two players, Fray (A Ness main) and Raychu (A Ness secondary) got to top 32.
You nailed it on the head during the Ult segment. Ness has so much going for him, he's just stuck in a meta with so many strong swordies and yet again, DLC top/high tiers that gatekeep him.
Least hes a mid tier. And his recovery is finally buffed with the directional airdodge which is tied for the farthest traveling air dodge in the game. Meaning that most of the time he doesn’t even need to jump to recover. Plus with the removal of multiple air dodges it makes pk thunder a more reliable pressure tool for edge guards and forcing opponents to airdodge. And ness is overall faster in every regard. His traction is now the fifth best in the game. And the infamous yoyo now being able to do cheesy edgeguards. Pk fire having less startup and A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN LANDING LAG. And pk thunder having intangibility for frames 1-9 on top of his head being invincible for the rest of the duration
I can't see him rising any more and just hope he doesn't keep falling. His weaknesses always get more apparent the longer a Smash game goes on and his matchup spread is atrocious.
@@mandalorianhunter1ness… yeah a little i guess. Lucas no Lucas has a horrible shield game. Yes his combo potential and kill power are WILD, but thats it. None of his aerials hit before frame 7, struggles against swordies even with him having some disjoints, struggles with escaping getting juggled. And despite how good his grab is, its also slow as shit. Approach options are bad, pk fire is way too laggy and unlike ness it doesn’t lock the opponent in a multihit it immediately sends them away
Ness is likely the most buffed character in the franchise, Bowser could be seen as more improved overall, but Ness was around for longer hence my choice
Ness in Ultimate is revisioned as an all-rounder, kinda a "jack-of-all-trades", but unlike let's say Melee Mario where because of that the character struggles cause he doesn't know what he wants to do, Ultimate Ness's all-round gameplay works in his favor since now all of his moves are strong & reliable tools for whichever kind of gameplan Ness wants to adapt to & the best part about his whole kit is that they all connect & sync with each other so well. Ness essentially becomes a very flexible & part of what I love playing Ness in Ultimate is how expressive he can be in his gameplay thanks to that. Not entirely related, but we actually now live in a time where not only PK Flash is a decent edgeguard move, but also heavily useful for reads & even can be combo'd into PSI Magnet as well as any of his aerials (yes including down air LMAO). If there's one thing I wish Ness can be updated & be more improved upon, it's not something everyone will like but when you look at the character histories, you can see why I thought of this: it'll be just give the best parts of Lucas to Ness cause, honestly, Lucas holds Ness back in terms of updating & improving character attributes & moveset. Even until now, no matter the changes Lucas gets in Smash 4 & Ultimate, he still comes off as a pseudo-clone of Ness where they just thought of ideas & concepts that look really fancy on paper, but execution-wise, cause Lucas is essentially a Ness remix, comes with mixed results. Brawl Lucas, obviously, he was just a super weird character, then Smash 4 Lucas is a half-grappler like Ness, but he is more favorable given his combo potential out of down throw is a lot more potent especially thanks to his footstool combos as well as having more kill options out of his throws, and then Ultimate Lucas becomes an all-rounder like Ness, but unlike Ness, Lucas's moves, while being strong themselves, don't really harmonize together & essentially shows more of the worse side of the "jack-of-all-trades". Unless they actually update Lucas to be more of his own character like in PM/P+ (doesn't have to be exactly like that, but just make him stand out completely in terms of his gameplay), I'd rather just make Lucas an alt for Ness (before you ask, Lucas can literally use all of Ness's stuff being PK Flash, baseball bat (but you can just reskin it to be his stick), & even yo-yo in Mother 3) & give the best parts of Lucas to Ness. Just give Lucas's forward tilt, forward smash, faster ground & air speed, maybe even give Lucas's up smash to Ness but optimize it to be used reliably, & we're surely going to have a properly realized version of Ness as a strong all-rounder.
interestingly a very obscure fact about ness from specifically Brawl, smash 4, and ult, across all 3 games, to which there's been literally 0 video of in over 10 years is: Ness can one shot a majority of the cast, including some heavies, from 0% with exactly 2 pk fires and one PK thunder 2, only provided he's in the range for PK thunder 2 to hit w/max power. all of this's approximately around the middle of Final Destination/an Omega Stage. I'm deff unsure if rage is a factor, but it technically is, for the most part it deff works w/o rage factored in. DI I cannot speak for as I've known no one who could do that to live the pk thunder 2 hit in smash 4/ult after all 3 moves connect, aside seeing a few people being able to DI out of smash 4's PK Fire impossibly fast in brawl I can confirm its a lot more iffy but it does work, even on Bowser, who's a heavy. Smash 4 and ult I can confirm its a lot more consistent. I've landed this a few times too in both games. its legit just these 3 moves in that exact order, and he can take a stock surprisingly easily from 0% if it all connects, granted it also Depends on enemy char weight. its also really easy to not get hit by via DI, good shielding, or fast counters like Marth, but when it works thats basically a whole stock gone instantly. on the lack of video on this obscure fact of Ness, for Brawl I deff get cuz its a lot iffier. but lack of video on it for smash 4/ult is a lot more surprising, because it's more consistent and a bit easier compared to brawl, w/it being the most consistent in ult as the shields aren't broken as smash 4's were, despite Perfect parriers existing. but I can confirm the overall consistency's deff around the same for both Smash 4 and ult when it lands.
I unfortunaly don't think this will make ness rise a lot, but smash 4 ness recently won supernova 2024, so it's good to see ness winning majors in 2024
I actually think S4 Ness was much better in S4 compared to Ultimate and was secretly really good. Hard to explain, but S4 up air, grab game, rage and KO power, air dodges (air dodge to aerial attack was stupidly good with S4 Ness and wasn't used enough I think), pivots, perfect pivots, pivot grabs (pivot grab was insane), resets, footstool shenanigans, shield crossups (and walking through people in general) and many other things benefitted him a lot more than Ultimate's more direct buffs. Also his S4 multi hit attacks are significantly more consistent. Not to mention whenever FOW showed up, he'd do extremely well in majors. I think a combination of FOW becoming more rare and the dominance of DLCs like Cloud and Bayo are the main reason Ness lost results and lowered from his initial top and high tier placements.
i really want to see zss, duck hunt, pac man, toon link, donkey kong, and dr mario....Edit: these are some of my favorite videos on youtube so please keep making them!
You sure you mained Ness since 64? I've used him as my actual main from Melee to Ultimate and the 10 extra frames of grab release was somthing I've had to deal with in Smash4 and was abused. That would be a interesting bug that can carry over 2 games since I never noticed that in Brawl. And about Ness's Yo-yo, in Melee and Brawl, it's strongest when it first comes out with the charging animation not actually charging the move so you really shouldn't have to wait until someone's at 200% before you can KO with it. Not sure if it applies to Smash4 or Ultimate since I never attempted to KO anyone with the Yo-yo by charging it... except edge garding in Ultimate.
One thing about smash 4 Ness is his up smash.which that time it was the best if not the best up smash in the game.this move has only one main weakness and it is it's ko potential doesn't kill until over 170% but despite this weakness it has a lot of positives it is really fast, good amount of range, low amount of endlag, and it spins around Ness looks like a halfmoon looking shield, obviously the best move in Ness's kit.especially when using it a an out of shield option because of it's high speed and low amount of endlag when missed,i think smash 4 ness is the best version of this character with this unique tool and he is considered to be a high tier instead of the ultimate version where he is a mid tier
