This brought back memories. I used to own a '72 240Z. I was performing a complete resto/mod with my daughter, who was 15 at the time. It was going to be her car. I had parts for a high compression beast using a 280 block, 240 head, and the crank from a Nissan Maxima. 11 to 1 if I recall correctly, using factory parts... I'd previously installed a factory air system from a 74 260Z. I was down to the frame and suspension, ready to take it to bead blast. Alas, my daughter discovered boys, and the project languished...
Story time. I’m currently in the process of restomodding a 78 280z and just discovered the joys of girls (for the first time at 18 held off for a while) and instead of ditching the car in favor of her I just hooked her on cars as well and now I have help. It’s a win win

@@jazzyjonny1449 I’m a mobile locksmith. I was hired to rekey a home about 2 months ago and was told I can have anything in the home and garage. Initially I said no. Then the owner says there’s a car in the garage I can have. He peeled back the tarps. And it was a complete 1978 280z only missing the Datsun emblem on the back. Obviously it needs work. But zero dents and even the key to for free. It hasn’t been registered since 1992. I’m deciding what to do with it. Not sure how much it will cost me to make it an awesome ride for me and my wife

This is insane, no way you cannot appreciate the level of work and dedication this guy put into this. Meanwhile I stress about how to install a tie rod for about a week without the proper tools, this guy over here tears apart and rebuilds the car like its childs play. Great work
MAGNIFICENT! FWIW I am a Corvair guy, I raced 'Vairs in autocross for about ten years back in the day. I ALWAYS loved the 240Zs because of their looks and performance. I had a friend who owned one, and she let me drive hers (name: Rosanna Danna- that was the SNL thing at the time) and I was SERIOUSLY impressed by the torque and responsiveness of the Japanese Z car. The 240Z had the same rust issues as our 'Vairs, and I'm thrilled to see this dealt with on this video. I think the ultimate transfusion was to install a 280Z motor in the original 240Z (the federal bumpers were HORRENDOUS!). Thank you for this vid, and I hope that Rosanna sees this!
I loved this video. My passion and job was to restore 240z's to get through eight years of college. I completed 76 total restorations( not to this extent) but beautiful nonetheless from 1976 to 1983. Basicly new paint, bodywork, and interior with whatever mechanical was needed. I sold all of them for $4000.00, which was more than they cost new. Never had to dicker on the price because they were so perfect, better than factory, they'd be worth $25-$30k today. Miss those days!
That was great. Having owned 2, 1972 240's. That car is by far my favorite. One had a 4 speed, the other an automatic with a/c. One Red, One Bonsai yellow. I've owned 77 cars in my life. Hot rods, V8's etc.. This car was the best all round performer and way fun to drive. I'm sure you're enjoying yourself in that beautiful girl you brought back to life. Yippee!
They call it "beyond saving" not only because of a lot of work. Non-factory welding in such amount and spots make it dangerous to drive on roads. It can fall apart in minor car accident and become dust in a high speed accident. That is why such cars better to stay static
Alexis 200SX True, it can be very dangerous if done incorrectly, but if you’re a good enough welder it can be just as strong as it was 50 years ago when it rolled off the factory floor. Most restorers are decent welders, I mean they’d have to be, but they tend to do a lot more grinding than welding as patches on body panels have to look good more than much anything else. The fact that this guy has confidence enough in his welding to patch that much rust on the chassis shows (to me at least) that he’s been doing this for a very good while.
For a lot of years patch panels were just not available for '60-70's cars and a lot of these cars just went to the crusher. Thank goodness for the renewed interest in such vehicles that has brought about the manufacture of said pieces.
This just poped up in my feed. As an older retired guy. I worked on these when they were new at a Datsun dealership in the US. Helped a friend 20 years ago with the carbs on his 240. Learned the SU style sidedrafts working on the BMC line of cars in the late 60's. Well done!
GREAT JOB! I restored one of these 25 years ago for a friend and it was lots and lots of rust work! He always said, "on a quiet night you could hear it rust!"

I had a datsun 240 z back in the early ‘90’s. Completely rebuilt it. Was a great car. Had triple Webber’s and 11 1/2 to 1 compression, 5 speed, kyb struts and a 2 1/2 inch sway bar in the front and a 1 1/8 inch in the back. It handled like a dream and screamed. It loved 105 mph. Hummed along and could do it all day. Mine was gun metal grey with a silver rally stripe down the passenger side.
This brings a tear to my I. I owned one of these when I was 20 back in 84, it was a rotted out junker….but when you're 20 it might as well be a Ferrari just the same. The body snapped right under the fire wall as they pretty much all do and well I didn't have the skills to fix it so.... Anyway it's always been my favorite old car so it's nice to see these old girls get a second chance to feel the wind on their headlights once again. Good on ya bud...peace :)
I totally empathize with you. When I was 20 (and my '70 for that matter) I sent it to the scrap yard; floors rusted out, door hinge failing and stabilizer bar broken from the frame rail. Wish I could get it back as it was a very early one HLS30 01030 production date 1/70.

I think you did a pretty outstanding job and have more patience than I. I did the exact same restore on my 71, but was fortunate that the only metal I had to replace was both floor pans. I am 98% finished and it has taken me almost 4 years and $53,000 later. Trying to find NOS parts is next to impossible and when you do find them, the prices are outrageous. Mine is the exact same color as yours with front and rear spoilers and back window louver is in black.
Watching the floor pans being replaced brought tears of joy. This was a "from the ground up" rebuild. The best that I could do for my 70 Z was a refresh, not even a refurbish... back then Datsun did a terrible job of corrosion control and sound/outside exhaust insulation so I was glad to see that you beefed up the insulation; it gives them such a better feel. If you could, put two part foam in the floor pan supports underneath to keep out the moisture (do that anywhere there is gapped sheet metal, it may not be factory but it helps a lot). Thank you for this wonderful work of passion, it will be a sad day when the last true Z is taken off of the road. (Btw mine was one of those early parts bin models; it had the Datsun 2000 Roadster carbs and opposite hook up brake master cylinders).
Thanks for watching, I used seam sealer on all the joins and tried to seal up all the gaps and used fish oil treatment on all the internals so that should help keep the rust at bay. Plus it’s not going to see much rain....
I’m only twelve at the moment but I’ve been interested in jdm classics for I while now and I’ve always dreamed of owning and restoring a Datsun so to see you doing this really does inspire me I hope they are still around by the time get the chance to restore one 😁
To answer some of the more common questions, the car is now finished, check out the video of the completed car and the first drive. The music is by Moog from Mighty Car Mods and is used in accordance with their usage policy. The only donor part from another car is the RH rear quarter panel, all other repair panels are either reproduction parts or fabricated from scratch and the donor car parts helped save at least two other cars. The car is being rebuilt to standard specs from almost all original parts apart from the brakes where I have used upgraded items. It’s a Sunday driver so doesn’t need a V8 or an RBDETT. The colour is the original colour this car left the factory in (903 Blue), it’s also quite rare in Australia. The silver car in the video is my Tarmac Rally 240z, check out the other videos in my channel for the build video of that car and some in car footage from recent events. Hi i like too much restoring tings of all kinds :D i think you make a great work with a several hours on it you make a lot of panales as you said the only think i could say to do it is to spray a antigravel on the underside of the chais the corrsion is a big proiblem as you have solved very grat cars at your garaje and nice work of restoration!!!! :D
Came within $100 of buying a 1970 240Z new. The dealer, mind you, was the local International truck dealer in my town of 30,000. Datsun was a new company back then and there were no regular dealers in my area. I had a '69 Nova SS that I had also purchased new. I was so impressed with this new little 6-cylinder sporty car I tried my best to buy one; there was nothing else like it coming into this country, everything being a 4 cylinder. It's just as well I didn't buy because insurance companies, shortly after these things started being imported, declared this 240Z a sports car and gave it a higher risk insurance rating. If I had bought one, I would have not been able to pay the insurance premiums. I would pretty much be walking, with a new car sitting in the driveway. Sometimes, things work out for the best.
What a tremendous amount of work you did ! From what I could see in the beginning, the car was pretty rough and I assume most people would have used it for parts, the work you had to do on the body is insane ! Congrats you really did a great job.
No he really did it properly, the way it should be done. I bet it took quite a lot of bravery, personnaly I would never have dared tackle something that hard. I really respect that guy, he's got the balls, and the skills

As a guy who's loved to work with his hands his whole 60 year long life this has got to be one of the most satisfying videos I've ever seen. I've never done anything quite this extensive but it's gotta be a great feeling to have accomplished this. If you've got a woman in your life, I hope she "gets" how important it is mate. My dad had one of these in the late 70's. I can still hear his voice the day he brought it home saying 'Sporty looking isn't it?' and agreeing. It was a great looking car in its day. Not as nice as yours though, you did a super job.
I have a 1978 280Z in really good condition. It just need minor work. This is a masterpiece. You got mad skills. Imagine if the youth today had a mentor like yourself. They would not have energy or time to get into trouble. Pass on this skill set. Do not take it to heaven with you...

I owned a 71 240Z and It was a work of art. Every detail down to the mahogany steering wheel just spoke to the level of engineering that went into the early Japanese sports cars. It was a piece of automotive art and function. It was blue like this one and I would literally smoke 80's Z28 and Mustangs that tried to take me. It was tuned with headers and six weaber downdraft carbs.
If we only had the paint technology we have now back when this car was built, perhaps Datsun might not have changed name. A stunning restoration, beautifully done and a car that deserves to have its life extended.

Liam McKeever i have an interesting project for you, a 1984 Nissan 720 4x4, its even for sale. Wouldn't be nice to put a z car body on it? Thats what I had in mind for it when I got it. But i inherited a better project, a 65 Chevy c10, i can't do two so the Nissan has to go. It runs and is driveable. It dose have a few minor issues.

My 1st car was a Data in 240Z. I paid $150 for it and it was actually the best car I owned. I had all types of cars......but I miss the 240Z. Great restoration job.

The exact car and color I saw as a kid and said to myself one day I'll own a Z. It took me many years but I finally bought a new 2004 350Z in Daytona Blue. Kept it until last year. One of my favorite cars I've owned.

Didn't you know that a well done weld is stronger than the parts is welded to?

those old datsuns were made with thicc bodies they can stand a bit of cutting and welding
They sure can, but that took quite a lot of will, with such a huge amount of work
Oneofdazzz terrible corrosion control however... insulation was entirely inadequate as well but he did a fantastic job correcting both

As a guy who's loved to work with his hands his whole 60 year long life this has got to be one of the most satisfying videos I've ever seen. I've never done anything quite this extensive but it's gotta be a great feeling to have accomplished this. If you've got a woman in your life, I hope she "gets" how important it is mate.

My dad had one of these in the late 70's. I can still hear his voice the day he brought it home saying 'Sporty looking isn't it?' and agreeing. It was a great looking car in its day. Not as nice as yours though, you did a super job.

I have a 1978 280Z in really good condition. It just need minor work. This is a masterpiece. You got mad skills. Imagine if the youth today had a mentor like yourself. They would not have energy or time to get into trouble. Pass on this skill set. Do not take it to heaven with you...

All that recycled metal has its downfalls - it's cheap to produce but really inferior.
Yea, most of them are almost 50 years old, and were parked in a field for the last 20 years.. That could be a culprit 😃
Ive just recently recieved my dads 66 chevy truck. Lots of rust spots im encouraged to see you guys remove the bad spots. Just like i thought it would be. Awesome job guys.

I owned a 71 240Z and It was a work of art. Every detail down to the mahogany steering wheel just spoke to the level of engineering that went into the early Japanese sports cars. It was a piece of automotive art and function. It was blue like this one and I would literally smoke 80's Z28 and Mustangs that tried to take me. It was tuned with headers and six weaber downdraft carbs.
I kept waiting for Moog or Marty to start narrating, haha. Nice build sir.

Liam McKeever i have an interesting project for you, a 1984 Nissan 720 4x4, its even for sale. Wouldn't be nice to put a z car body on it? Thats what I had in mind for it when I got it. But i inherited a better project, a 65 Chevy c10, i can't do two so the Nissan has to go. It runs and is driveable. It dose have a few minor issues.

Soooooo how to you replace all the rotten bits?..floorpan was shot, sills looked shot and the rear quarters were shot. The frameof the car is original and refurbed the running gear..still the same car..

I paid $150 for it and it was actually the best car I owned.
I had all types of cars......but I miss the 240Z.

You resurrected a classic and your attention to structural detail is to be commended - that's a lot of man hours - but the result is a solid car and a rare one at that.

Firstly, thank you for bringing this car back! Second, if you find a 1974.5 260, please consider a video restore? I miss mine soooo much! T-boned by a VW running a stop sign in 89.... she took more damage than i did- lucky she survived, hit me at about 50 mph- but it did total my beloved Datsun...

The exact car and color I saw as a kid and said to myself one day I'll own a Z. It took me many years but I finally bought a new 2004 350Z in Daytona Blue. Kept it until last year. One of my favorite cars I've owned.
