      sorry for the shameless plug here but i bet you can get this to them. If you want to put some real power behind bamboo skewers you need clear plastic forks, rubber bands and one pen. optionally a fold-back clip and tape will upgrade it. You can make bows or crossbows that are far more accurate and has at least 4 times the force.

    You are having major stability issues, as indicated by the skewers all being in the board in different angles.
    As a basic aerodynamics thing, the so called 'center of pressure' needs to be behind the 'center of mass' looking at it from the way it is pointing. The further away this center of pressure the more stable your flying object will be. The center of pressure is roughly the middle of the area of the object, whilst the center of mass is in the middle of the weight of the object (balance the skewer on your finger horizontally, where it is stable, is about the center of mass). The thick thing on the back of the skewer is increasing the area on the back, but also pretty heavy since its solid. I think that is why it is making it less stable. Making some very simple paper (or old school feather) flights on the end would increase the stability significantly.
    Although to be honest, stabbing someone with the skewer is probably more effective.

    We used to make gloveguns back in primary school, we used dish washing gloves, you have to find the right ones though, they're much thicker than those hygiene gloves. They're harder to pull back but you get far stronger projectile output if you really pull them hard (they're tough enough). For the barrel we'd use pvc pipe off cuts we'd find laying around or even saw off bits of dried bamboo segments. Brian had the right idea with attaching the glove so it folds out and around the nozzle but then passes back through the barrel (provided you have a large enough glove finger). Before you attach the glove, you can fold pieces of electrical tape around where you cut the pipe it it's too sharp to fold the glove over. The bottle idea looks terrible for accuracy, you want a sturdy straight barrel you can hold steady while yanking that glove as hard as you can. For projectiles we used everything from ball bearings, fishing sinkers, or most commonly these perfectly round rockhard seeds that would drop from trees all over our suburb. It's also fun to experiment with soft projectiles such as berries and grapes and watch them go splat, you just have to pinch the tip of the glove BEHIND the berry so you don't squish it with your fingers. I got hit in the eye once, from about 15 metres away, we all got in lots of trouble, haha. Best of luck!

    My pals and I made something similar. We used straws, rubber bands that were slightly wider than a skewer, and duct tape. The straw holds the skewer and gives it a straight path, cut the rubber band, tape it to one end of the straw, like a regular slingshot. It was amazing how accurate and fast it shot. Had fun shooting cans! You guys are awesome! Always look forward to the next episode from y’all!!

    Take a thick rubber band, the purple kind you would find around a bundle of asparagus, and a pen body with the end plug and ink/head out so you just have a tube to act as a barrel. Lay the rubber band flat so it is doubled layered on itself and place the middle of your now doubled up strip of rubber over the back of the open ended pen body. Hold the two excess bits of rubber down to the sides of the pen body and tightly wrap around with tape or another thin rubber band near the ends (of the excess rubber, to give you as much stretch as you need, adjust where you wrap for more power) to secure them to the body. Insert skewer into the pen head opening of your now barrel, pinch it with the rubber band at the back like a slingshot, pull and fire. You will be much more accurate and do much much more damage with one of these. Used to make them all the time when I was younger. To anyone reading this, its your own damn fault if you hurt yourself or anyone else with this. Take some personal responsibility.

    Used to make these growing up, could shoot bamboo skewers about an inch into wood utility poles.
    Take a standard bic pen. The kind that you can take the ink well out of, and the back cap off of so it's just a hollow tube (I'd assume you can use any hollow tube of this size but bic pens are great because they leave some room for the skewer to be accurate but not too much that it gets stuck). Next you take a rubber band, and essentially loop it in an infinity style (or figure 8, whatever) shape towards the back of one end of the pen so that one of the circles of the eight hugs the end of the pen, and the other hangs off to be used as the slingshot mechanism. Tape this/tie this arrangement down as tightly as possible. Now load the skewer in pointy end facing frontwards through the front of the pen tube, and pull the skewer back making sure it stays with the rubber band. Should really fly out of there.
    Would also imagine this is doable on a bigger scale with a bigger tube and some surgical tubing for stronger effect, the tube would have to be a stronger material to avoid bending though.

    Your many options to upgrade
    1: use metal skewers
    2: use RUBBER gloves
    3use a full rotation of layered RUBBER asparagus bands (the wide thick purple ones)
    3: take a hose end (about 1/2 skewer length)and attach it to the bottle neck then attach the bands so that you drop the longer style skewers down the pipe and pull it back so that it stabilizes it while acceleration is happening for longer
    4: use paper clips bent straight
    5: use a hard pvc pipe with a glued on handle, put the band through two(well any even number, the more slits, the more stable, the more bands needed, the more power...) cut slits down the side (long end of the pipe is cut and comes up your arm toward you) with a small attached coin and paperclip slide arm to pull back.
    6: to defeat the lack of accuracy use numbers, place several toothpicks or paperclip rods or something into a launching tube and fire a buckshot all at once
    7: use exercise bands or similar things
    8: swap from rubber to a spring mechanism and you can even set it on a trigger decently
    9: use a vacuum and heavy duty balloons/condoms/other thick and heavy rubbery bubbles to get more pull back and uniformity that you can release with a flip of a switch
    10: coat the projectiles in lubricant before loading(bonus, these can be made flammable in some cases)
    11: use drill bits, self tapping screws, or similar things
    12: use a metal band that is secured under two holders on the side instead of a traditional rubber band, even a snap band would work to a lesser degree, but a stronger band is recommended
    13: use glue, maybe a toothpick or paperclip core, and clay to cast out full flechette style darts to fire
    14: hammer bottle caps flat and fling those
    15: sharpen penny edges and fire those
    16: use part of the discarded bottle to make fletchings for your skewers
    17: add a thin wire line between two projectiles to make a garrote bola
    18: make reverse angled cuts to the head of the skewer to make it into a burrowing barb

  • @aralehkepa6340
    @aralehkepa6340 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You want a longer barrel, stronger rubber, a little extra weight on the tips of the skewer and some fins. Large balloons are a good choice and adding something on the inside to grab onto helps, something along the lines of duck tape on the inside of it so you can grab onto it and not worry about the skewers going through it. Fins can be made of any light, flexible stuff, even simple tape (not ducktape). As for a longer barrel, you'll find something. I've used some tubes I found which were not so big. Remember that extra weight on the skewers will go a long way, you could also opt for sharp pencils. The rubber shouldn't pull too far back either. You can pull back as far as you want so long as the skewer is still in the barrel, because if it leaves the barrel you'll run into issues. Try to avoid massive blunder busters as it adds little guide for the projectile. A barrel that is slightly larger than a straw would work. You've now created a blow gun that uses rubber. Now adorn sights to your new weapon for additional style points.

    Way back in the late 1980s, we used to use the larger hollow plastic rods from coat hangers(a foot or so long somewhere around +-1/3" diameter inside)
    and the dish-washing glove fingers to make very sturdy versions of the same.
    Now having had been around 8-10 years old at the time and what I recall from it is that shooting pointy things from it sucked, but shooting BBs, dried peas, staining berries etc. through
    that long barrel worked really well. Now, this all leads to "juvenile weapon #2" of way back in the day... or the folded sticky note and gum dart.
    Which being said with regard to all of the above as you guys described this effort is a "weapons of nuisance" at best.

    Hey! I made it in!
    So for a bit more pointers here; sorry Brian but yes, the passionately named "blunder bus" is certainly the way to go! Think of this weapon more like a bow than a slingshot; the force from you pulling the balloon back should push the cone of the bottle into your hand helping you be a little bit more stable when taking the shot. Also for ammo? Metal BBs were definitely the right choice! You are going to need that weight to really make those shots fly. Personally I am more partial to pebbles since the true nature of this slingshot is it's easily obtained ammo as to never run out or have to search for more ammo.
    Now as for improving a launch method; you really want something as stretch as possible. Maybe those balloons used for balloon animals might be better? I haven't tested it; but possibly freezing the balloon beforehand could help strengthen it's elasticity? Thicker balloons definitely seem like the better option; but mind you they are also a lot harder to handle due to the force needed to pull them far back!
    Thanks for reading these, and good luck!

    As kids in Australia (Yeah we all did/do it) we used the Thumb of thick washing gloves (The type with the grip for the pads of your fingers) attached to the ends of PVC conduit pipes (about 2.5cm/1in diameter)... but it's best done with pebbles as skewers will always loose aerodynamics. Think about it this way. How many guns fire arrows through a barrel propelled by sudden force like gunpowder
    The Blunderbuss is a better use due to the extra material being in front of the point at which you are stabalising the sling. This makes it much easier to aim straight and keep the Ring straight (perpendicular to the skewer). If the glove is travelling straight when released there is less chance of it slapping your hand.
    If you want the best of both worlds ("Blunderbuss" = accuracy of firing. "The Wimp Grip" = protection of hand) You can fix 2 bottle tops together like an hour class. Make sure they are straight and tight.

    • @HelicopterShark
      @HelicopterShark 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tension>length for the glove. This is why the thumb is better. You want to keep pressure as close to the release point as possible.

    HERE IS THE ANSWERE: use balloons (layer them for more power) snip off the balloons neck. Take JUST the threaded ring of the bottle(bigger the bottle head the more had room you have) fit the balloon over the bottle head and put the sealing ring over top of the balloon. You can even screw back on the lid of the bottle to have a contained unit. If you want to use skewers then drill a hole the diameter of the skewer through the lid and insert the skewer through the hole. My friends and I were able to nearly perfect this and used airsoft bbs to hit each other over long distances.

    Pocket sling shot. Need, gatorade bottle, balloon, knife or saw, and ammo of some sort like a pebble or marble or something. Take a Gatorade bottle cut directly above the part of the bottle where the plastic turns from round to straight. Take the plastic band off then place a ballon over the mouth of the bottle. Replace the plastic band/ring over the balloon and pull back to fire your choice of ammo. Keep the lid to store ammo in it as well.

    Gatorade bottle neck(none of the bottle), one of those big punching balloons.
    Use a hacksaw to cut off all of the bottle from the neck, sand it smooth with sandpaper.
    Take off the ring that was connected to the cap(do not throw away).
    Cut off the neck of the balloon.
    Wrap it over the wider end of bottle neck, pull it about halfway up.
    Put the ring back on, roll the balloon rubber back over it.

The hose clamp made it easier to replace the glove fingers and remove the need to hold the glove finger yourself. Hooray for no hand injuries.

  • @brady29_

    The best way I found to make a sling shot out of a bottle is to use a bottle with a large top like on Gatorade bottles and cut it under the part wear the cap screws on. Next gently pry up the bit of plastic located slightly under the cap threads that seals the bottle. Use something like a flat head screwdriver and dont break the plastic. Now that it is off take a balloon and cut it slightly under the neck of it then slide it over the top of the bottle and make sure you slide it over the side you cut about to the second thread line. Now slide the bit of plastic you took off early back on wear it was originally as this will hold the balloon in place. You are now done and can use as sling shot. Oh and as a side note you can fill it with ammo and put the cap on so it does not spill.

Hurts like hell and I'm surprised none of us lost an eye when we were battling each other with these on the playground.

    If you want more accurate shots
    1. Ensure you pull back straight. If you are off the projectile will not fly straight.
    2. Weight the tip of the projectile. Having a balanced projectile will cause it to tilt mid air and have a potential to go in nice and flat like you want.
    Make those changes and then reassess. Hope this helps.
    Btw I dont think Brian's or Jason's design are that different but Jason's might have a slight advantage due to the fact his provides a better grip to counteract the force of pulling back the rubber glove although I can see Brian's design easier to hold onto after release.

    German watcher here: "Fahrt" is the noun for "to drive" ("the drive" however would be a different word in german). Most correctly it would be translated with something like "journey"

  • @jek__
    @jek__ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    As far as I know, fahrt in german means like drive or ride. So like, ausfahrt means exit, or more literally "from drive" (or drive from), as opposed to zufahrt which means exit, or "to drive" (drive to). You journey to an entrance, you journey from an exit. What is the german word for speed? I think some modern germans just say speed. Theres also schnelle, which kind of means haste, if you want someone to speed up you say "make haste". Blitz means lightning which can mean fast. Then theres geschwindigkeit, which means more like, physical translocation speed. It's interesting how long the word geschwindigkeit looks, but its actually just as short as the english word when its said. It's the same number of syllables as velocity, and basically means the same thing
    I dont think the direction of the bottle makes a huge difference, blunderbuss or otherwise. It's basically just about the cap, and the cone is there to hold onto, because its not like the cone is a tube thats going to be guilding the bolt. However, I could imagine that having the cone on the firing side vs on the hand side creates a kind of donut air cushion, which slightly discourages the bolt from flying to the sides, kind of as if it were a tube
    I dunno if sharp things are better than round things if you have no fletching and no spin

  • @Leo.23232
    @Leo.23232 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Two problems, the first is that the projectile is not dense enough and needs more inertia. A metal projectile will fix that, a nail for example. The second is the rubber isn't strong enough, use a much sturdier glove. This will enable you to store far more energy when stretching it, which will be needed with a heavier projectile. Preferably you want the projectile front heavy to make it fly straight too. If you have a strong enough rubber, it will most certainly be lethal.

    You should use the “ balloon animal” balloons. They are tougher and they are straight. They also have a lip at the end that can help it lock into the threads of the bottle. And I think if you put a hole in the end of the bottle cap you could put the skewer through the hole and lock the balloon on the threads. This won’t work the “blunderbuss” way though.
    Hope this helps.

I would then build a cross using rubber bands and pencils, attaching the shell casing on top. You can fit one end of a rubber band pinched between the shell casing and the “cross”, giving access to using the backend of shell to house your skewer and load it onto your rubber band.

    Guys, use a thick ballon and split the back of the skewers like 1 inch and put a small rectangular piece of thin cardboard or paper then tape or tie the back of the split so the "wing" doesn"t fall. You've now got a skewer that looks like an arrow and flies straight.
    I used to do this a lot as a kid and the skewers would fly about 20 meteres and get stuck in my neighbour's wooden roof.... So yeah... Use a ballon without the blowing part/ tube so you got a pouch and the cardboard and you get a very effective weapon that gets stuck in wood
