    Favorite version of this weapon are the ones the Polynesians made, instead of obsidian they would use sharks teeth and tie it to they wood. The worst part about the Polynesian s version was it was designed for the sharks teeth to come out of it and stay imbedded in whatever there target was. They also look really freaking cool.

      I think that's how the obsidian ones worked, too. The obsidian would chip off and stay in the wounds.

    • @Blackpheonix99
      @Blackpheonix99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Obsidian ones worked the same way as well but the cool thing about the shark tooth ones was that it was better for penetration and serration so harder to heal vs obsidian which was better for slashing and gashing massive damage but sometimes still able to heal up if blood loss doesn't take you first. Both amazing versions of the weapon though.

    I think what I would do is sandwich the washers between two paddles. I would also drill holes from one paddle to the other (preferably between every washer/hole), insert bolt, and tighten down with a nut. The handle would require sanding/wrapping for grip/comfort.

    • @jek__
      @jek__ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the holes drilled through the board would compromise the edge of the wood more than the bolts would strengthen the hold. Wood glue is stronger than wood, if you just use that the wood should break on the grain before the washers break out. The likelihood of the washers snapping off the edge of the wood instead of falling out is probably likely already high. You could also use a band for the edge like an old sawsall blade or something

    Mesoamericans had these conflicts, that were like ritual wars (Guerras floridas, I have no Idea how are they called in English) solely with the purpose of capturing prisoners for their sacrifices, and depending on the prisoners hierarchy that's the sacrifice they used them for, regular folks were sacrificed and their blood used to feed their gods. Nobles, priests, and other high class people were used for ritual sacrifice on particular holidays, these people ended up beheaded and their heads piled in steaks outside the main temple, the rest of the body after the heart was removed, was eaten by the Mexica nobles and priests, yes ancient mesoamericans were CANNIBALS, so most of the weapons they used including the Macahuitl were not meant for killing because the prisoner had to be left alive to be sacrificed later on.

There was death and they did horrible things indeed, like it happens with every conquered population the conquerer ends up abusing the conquered, but the benefits and the advancement they brought outweighs the horrors of it.

    For future reference and for those half a dozen or so who WILL try this, the safest way you could do this project is to use a tool called a Biscuit Joiner to cut your cavities, use smaller washers and socket them deep enough to be able to use both a glue like we see them use here, AND bolts and nuts to run through the holes in the washers to ensure a mechanical hold as well as a chemical one. Frankly washers are a bad pick metal wise you'd be better to use something that's got more of an edge to it since a bunch of small semi sharpened edges are gonna want to bounce more than stab or really slash. The Polynesian design is the best example which used shark teeth, a serrated pointed knife essentially that you could basically just aggressively wipe someone with and leave large gashes, teeth (as is mentioned by another commenter to be the point of the design), and a lot of damage to the person's body.

    The pronunciation is pretty okay from my limited knowledge of Nahuatl, the main thing is just the the "tl" is a lateral affricate, not just the english sounds /t/ and /l/ smashed together. The "l" sound is the most different, but it's not too hard. The trick is to put your tongue in the position for an /l/ and then exhale like you're saying an /h/. This should produce a sound sorta halfway between /l/ and the english "sh" sound. Then you just put the /t/ sound immediately before it, while making sure not to take the tip of your tongue off the roof of your mouth. (It's actually easier to do it this way than to attempt to produce the two sounds completely seperately since your tongue doesn't have to move as much).

    You should have used something that still splinters like obsidian. One of the most gruesome parts of this weapon was that the bits of obsidian would end up being impeded in the wound making the cut continue to cut with movement causing the wound to be harder to close up and infect easier.

    It seems like Anthony should've maybe done a running blow to get a better showing of the Hit-and-Run tactics, that'd be nice to see. Considering he just settled for one decisive blow which isn't a proper representation of how they'd fight, he seems to more rely on his HEMA training and going for slashing/stabbing motions instead of the rip-and-tear attacks he mentioned were commonly used by the Aztecs. Maybe a retry would be nice to see.

    The modern version would be a pull saw. If I was to make it I'd use hacksaw or reciprocating saw blades. Love the beer bottle idea however wine bottles are usually better as you have a larger piece. I use the bottoms to nap arrowheads.

    hu in nahuatl words is literally just the w sound. It comes from Spanish where they don't really use w at least traditionally, so they use the silent separator letter h and a very short 'u' to write that sound.

    Obsidian is much sharper when it's knapped from an obsidian core (like a cylindrical or cone shaped piece of obsidian). I can't imagine sharpening, the way it's done here, will get you anywhere close to that. If done with a good quality piece of obsidian then you can get obsidian blades with a sharpness of 30 angstroms, that is far sharper than a modern steel scalpel (you can find electron microscope comparisons online). A well made obsidian blade is obscenely sharp.
    Of course, the big drawback is that they're essentially like super sharp blades of glass. They will cut through flesh like butter but will shatter or chip when hitting metal or bone. I'm not sure how it would do against a styrofoam dummy (i imagine not super well, like why you shouldn't use your really nice super sharp knives on cheese). A better comparison would be cutting an actual piece of meat.
    Also, beware, there's a ton of misinformation about mesoamerican people, culture, and weapons floating around, especially in Mexico (due to many reasons, including but not limited to a history of racism against Indigenous people).
