I've been to Rio De Janeiro twice on a solo trip and it was a wonderful experience. Sao Paulo looked more dangerous to me specially in the downtown area. You have to dress down when you go to Rio De Janeiro and be aware of your surroundings. I would always make sure that there were no people close to me when taking a picture. The second time I went to Rio De Janeiro I met a family on a boat ride from Brasilia that was also on vacations. They took me like family, and we ended up exploring Rio together for three days. I felt like a local and they even invited me to go visit them in Brasilia. Brazilians are so welcoming and nice people. The safest places that I know of in Brazil are Gramado and Canela. I can't wait to go back to Brazil in the near future.

I'm comparing different places, so I'm not sure if it's place or time, but back in the day Central America was full of skillful pickpockets but I can't remember anyone trying it on. Fast forward 3 decades visiting Colombia and the closest thing is attempting to grab a cell phone and then run. The young people fell impune and are quick to use weapons instead

Rio De Janeiro is surprisingly pretty safe in terms of violent crime on tourist. Crime there is more so organized with an unwritten rule to not mess with gringos. (Just what I was told from visiting favelas when I was there). Still gotta keep your head on a swivel and not be dumb though

Did he did unhook the necklace clasp by pinching it with 1 hand in a microsecond... or did he pull the whole necklace over your head in like a whipping motion??

I had the time of my life in Rio. Most people don't realize the nice areas is where people get robbed. I stayed in Copacabana. In the Favela (ghetto)they have strict rules against robberies, assault, rape. I enjoyed Rochina Favela more than anything. You will see the drug dealers standing around with machine guns. Even Pounds of drugs on the table all out on the open. I told my tour guide take me where you aren't allowed to take people. Sometimes you feel like you are in a maze/tunnel the deeper you go. But super safe, robbers get punished bad by the gangs. But the beach where the police patrol everyone is fair game lol.

Yeah you definitely can't wear anything that resembles gold even if it isn't gold. That's the whole point, it attract them and they can't tell what it is from a distance.
