  • Welcome back to olaf's old-time. In this video I will share a more detailed look at the automatic transmission issue of my Mercedes W126 500SE. When the oil in the transmission is not fully hot, the transmission slips during gear change from 2nd to 3rd. This is not a good sign. Good thing is, once the oil has full temperature the issue is gone for the time being. I will check oil level in the transmission - but if my eyes do not fail me, the fluid level is ok. So next steps will be to flush the transmission thoroughly and replace oil and filter. Until then: drive!

Hello! Go to Mercedes dealer and order an "2-3 gear spring set" for your gearbox. Costs maybe 20€ nowadays and can be changed easily when gearbox oil pan is off. This is a common fault in 722.3. Slips more when cold. It is easy to change, four bolts out and cover off, new springs in. Then of course oil change. For the temperature gauge, check solder joints and possible capasitors. This is also a common fault, it is in the gauge itself.

Thank you! No one told me that before. Can you specify the gear spring set in more detail? Is there a video out there for that kind of exchange?

Transmission fluid expands as it heats up. So it may not give full internal pressure to shift until it expands.Usually checking the level is a specific process: engine up to full operating temperature, car level, (some cars require parking brake set & transmission in neutral.Check your model requirements) Place a white paper or card near where you check the dipstick to give a good contrast to see the level on the marks. Also: if there are many miles (kilometers) on the fluid, a complete flush can make things worse. There are friction particles in the fluid from the internal clutches that will be removed if you flush the whole contents out. In USA there are "high mileage" transmission formulations specifically for slipping older transmissions. They may have them where you are too. Good luck.

For the overheating part, you should check your fan clutch to see if everything is ok, and check the visco fan to have oil..maybe you have to refill it with oil too.

Maybe 🙄because slipping automatic transmission got hotter and hotter oil going to the radiator and it heats more radiator
