I bought a W212 2016 model last month. 3.0 V6 petrol with stock AMG kit. It do not have plenty fancy features. However, The acceleration, stability, breaking, cornering, steering feedback etc truly brings happiness & smile on my face.
As you said, i inspected & driven several pre-owned W212s and paid a premium for the condition.

I used to own one mint condition model decades back for a few years and later sold to a persistent collector.. since then had many luxury slavs Germans and Brit’s but nothing came close to my 280S in terms of ride quality drive and seating comfort. The rear seat was a chesterfield sofa to put it modestly.. I still kick myself for letting it go
It really is an overengineered car. Small details like the full vertical self standing bonnet, access control of boot and glove compartment with master key etc make each day of owning one a pleasant surprise in itself.
