  • Automatic gearboxes are a fine piece of working hydraulic art. Anyone who opened up one of these will marvel how everything works so smoothly.
    For automatic gearboxes to work properly some basic maintenance is necessary and NOT do things to them like shown in this video.
    Keep the ATF fresh, change oil&filter every 60k, sooner if towing or if driving a heavy vehicle and they will outlast the vehicle. Treat them badly and they will fail rather quickly....

      its the bowden cable in the engine bay(white plastic adjuster). Its probably too tight. Loosen it a bit and see if there is a difference

      It's true. A little bit of dirt or any other debris in the "brain" of an automatic gearbox is a nightmare. Fresh oil and 100% cleanliness when working on these is a must.\

    I have a 1987 300d with 163k miles. When you shift from neutral to drive or reverse it takes a couple seconds to engage. It never slips and all gears shift solid. What would cause slow engage in drive or reverse.
    And advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Robert

    • @heritagesteel1976
      @heritagesteel1976  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Robert , this is hard to say. It can be one faulty o-ring or one worn piston in the "brain" or a series of worn rubber parts. There are also a series of tiny springs(rev gear) that loose tension/break.
      100% Hydraulic boxes are rather slow, compared to electronic ones they need some time. But if no slippage occurs between gears, correct oil level and quality is present, i wouldnt touch it. Never touch a running system.
      Going on a "treasure hunt" like that for a tiny problem is time consuming, expensive and with no guarantee that you'll fix the problem.
      Buy the WIS CD for your model. Then you can read up on the automatic gearbox section. They have an area there which states : If this occurs than check that. its a big help

    Curious if you've got any advice for a transmission issue. Got ahold of a w124 e320 with the 4 speed auto and the 3.2L inline 6, and the transmission seemingly is the only major issue with the car. It shifts flawlessly under max acceleration, downshifts perfectly in all conditions, however when you simply roll away from a stop smoothly, when it is under no real stress and should be up shifting, it will just stay in first gear until 4k or 5k rpms, and wait absolutely forever to find 2nd gear, and when it does, the engine is still at 4k rpms, and the transmission gives you a nice kick. It seemingly cannot tell when to shift up at low speeds. Also sometimes, practically every 4 stops or so, it will just magically shift normally and do so perfectly smoothly, I wouldn't quite call the issue intermittent, because it's happing much more often than not, and it is consistently happening in all conditions, but it's a confusing issue. I have an inspection scheduled, and won't be driving it at all until then, so I've just been looking around to see if I can find any advice in the meantime.

      hi,
      these are still 100% mechanical/hydraulic transmissions and as such dont shift as smoothly ever as an electronic one. if you have the 722.5 the 5th gear is electronically "added". What you're describing is not normal, i expect oil level and quality is correct?
      There are two adjustments that can be done on these boxes, one is in the engine bay, a bowden cable that runs down into the gearbox. Essentially is tells the gearbox "when" to shift. Adjust it without slack (or too tight)you get the symptoms you describe, too loose and it it will shift right away.
      You've got a vacuum valve on the side of the gearbox, but when they're gone(membrane gone) they will shift harsh but correctly. These can be adjusted for quality of shifting(harscher/smoother) but never influence the shift points.Hope this helps. Search with your gearbox number on google. Tons of info there.

    Hello, I saw this car for sale "Mercedes-Benz 300 TD Automatic", and since I'm from Portugal and I'm used to Manual cars (actually I have the "Mercedes-Benz 200D"), I dont know if automatic's w124 are common to give problems, could you please tell me, if It's ok to buy one?

    I have a question, is my 560sl Red modulator A1262702579 compatible with new one, Green A 1262709279?

    • @heritagesteel1976
      @heritagesteel1976  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the red ones were the first ones, mercedes then updated the part. This is a very simple part, when apllied vacuum it just moves a pin in the back of the valve. Although being simple a worn/damaged unit will cause hard shifts. Test it with a vacuum pump first. If the pressure drop exchange the part. Hard work is adjusting it later

    Very interesting video, I don't hear that kind of sincerity about the reliability of these gearbox in the mb community. I'm myself the owner of a 300d turbo (kinda starting regretting it after hearing all these lol). I do have a problem with hard shifting between the 1 and 2 and sometimes the 3 and 4. Never in down shifts. I though about doing the oil change myself but clearly I do not have the tools and environment to do it properly. Is that a job that mercedes can still perform well? Or should I go for a small dedicated professional if I find one? Thank you for the awarness brought on the subject

    • @heritagesteel1976
      @heritagesteel1976  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. Find a shop who loves old MB's. The dealers nowadays are parts exchangers and dont understand old tech. Shift quality is directly related to the vacuum valve on the gearbox itself. there is a diaphragm which goes bad. Echanging the valve cost around 130 euros. Adjusting the gearbox afterwards is a pain in the ass but done properly you'll get a smooth shifting gearbox.

      @@heritagesteel1976 I'm sorry to bother you again, but I've read that when the modulator diaphragm goes bad, the engine start burning trans oil, that goes with smoke and smell. It does not appear to be the case on my car, so maybe it's just a leak on the vacuum circuit?

    • @heritagesteel1976

      Dont use anything "compatible". Use the right oil. Each gearbox has a datasheet oil. Just search the web with the datasheet and you can buy from CASTROL, FUCHS, MANNOL etc. From my experience the FUCHS oil is one of the best and to my knowledge is what Mercedes uses...
