You came to the right channel dude. I've done so much maintenance following this channel. And please start by changing the CVT fluid. I'd recommend using Amsoil Trans fluid and Amsoil motor oil. Best of all worlds.
Thank you for the video. My 2012 Altima has had an issue not knowing what "gear" to go into. I know it doesn't have gears, we called it a hic-cup in shifting. This external filter change at 130,000 miles fixed that issue. I've been babying this tranny due to the issues they have. I wish I knew about this external filter prior to now. I've flushed the tranny fluid twice by draining the pan & disconnecting the return line coming back from radiator. Add new Idemitsu CVT type N, run the engine & keep doing this till you see new fluid coming out of the return line. I also added a Nissan tranny fluid cooler - great fit.
Though the transmission was toast and so did a transmission shop. Then I googled the problem and replaced the rotation sensor and it worked like new. These transmissions are simpler and less parts than clutch transmission. People who don’t understand them make up horror stories about them
@@BretDouglas transmission rotation sensor. Remove the air box and it's in top of the CVT transmission held with one 10mm bolt. When these go bad all sorts of weird things happen like jerking, high rpm but slower speed etc.
Great video. I wanted to change the ones on all of our Nissan NV200s in our fleet and the dealer berated me when I asked them about it. Almost like they didn't want me to do it?!? So I bought the filters and did them all myself! This is a great 200k miles service tip!

Changing that filter might make it run better since it catches more of the debris than the one in the pan would. My logic is that a screen simply will *not* catch all of it. It may stop metal from going in but it won't stop everything.
I have a 2011 Altima i bought brand new and its just hit 60,000 miles. I got a transmission filter kit and it came with the cooler filter which is a good thing cause until i saw that i didn't know it had that. Hadn't seen a videos about it until i found yours. I don't have a problem changing it along with the main filter, I just needed to know where it was located and how to get to it, your video was VERY helpful. I just like to know what im looking at before I start something when possible and i look forward to getting this service out of the way back to other things. Thanx so much.

Nissan didn't make it very easy to access this filter but it's not impossible, and I've heard from other viewers that Nissan doesn't recognize or even acknowledge that filter exists even though you can buy the filtering a kit lol. @djchristian8880 I didn't have any problems with it, I just wanted to do the service interval maintenance on it before it decided to start giving up a problem. I bought the car brand new in 2011 and it just turned 60,000 miles so I try to keep everything up so I don't have any more problems than necessary.

At 200k miles these Altima’s need just about everything! Alternator pulley bearing, oil pan almost rusted through, all front end suspension components less the wheel bearing housing. That’s struts, lower control arms, axles, tie rod ends, swaybar links and wheel bearings. I’ve never changed this filter either!! Now I’m replacing rear suspension parts. However the body still looks good less a few minor dents. Oh and I have to replace the valve cover and gasket it’s plastic and leaks well. Also replaced the exhaust manifold/cat converter and secondary cat, yup has a second cat after the flex pipe. This car keeps me busy
I'm at 200k now and agree 100%! We'll have more videos on how to replace these parts as needed. I've noticed my oil pan too having some rust on it. I think the rear shocks might be ready to replace, the rear is sagging a bit lately lol.
@@TrickShiftGarage yup rear shocks are gas charged and hold the car up. I replaced those too but had a heck of a time removing the lower retaining bolt as it had seized in to the rubber bushings steel tube. All the hammering can't break it loose because the rubber absorbs the shock. My airgun finally spun the rummer bushing in the alloy mount. I later drilled out the bolt and put the old bushing back in. Good luck finding the bolt thread size, I got one that was close and just airgunned it in as it just threads into the shock mount.
bless you for being able to change those yourself! And i agree, altimas do need lots of maintenance. Mine started messing with my bank when at 70k+ miles the front struts needed changing. and the list goes on after that. I've changed all 4 engine mounts following this channel, valve cover, and so on. I'm starting to believe that CVT are not as bad as people picture it to be. The problem with CVT is peoples ignorance and most notably, mechanics ignorance. Most mechanics have the mentality that the transmission fluid is a lifetime fluid, and ITS NOT! and with that mentality, CVT go bad for not giving it proper maintenance. If you've driven at high speeds like i have, you definitely need to change it since the transmission runs very hot. And as soon as that fluid turns too hot, it looses the viscosity and friction properties.
A lot of people didn't apparently lol. It's very unfortunate but, Nissan CVTs are like taboo. Everyone backs off when they hear cvt problems and not everyone can help you when you need it.

@dr.greenthumb6535 I'm not sure what it's called officially but I always the CVT cartridge filter. The filter inside the pan isn't the cartridge style, so it's usually enough to differentiate it to the Parts store. Here is the Nissan part numbers that could come in handy. (The o-ring seals the housing to prevent leaks, I couldn't find it at the time this video was made so you should definitely replace it if you can) O-ring part # 31526-3VXOA Cartridge filter # 31726-28XOA Hope this helps, good luck and thanks for watching!👍

The trans in my 09 Altima at around 104k never slipped, jerked, or gave any indication of trouble till I noticed a noise at 30mph, that sounded like an old std transmission, with a bearing going out. My mechanic pulled the pan and it had lots of metal debris in it. I never changed the fluid or the filter. We put in a factory rebuilt trans in. On long trips is was hearing a noise like a alternator bearing going, or a power steering pump. ( probably wouldn’t hear it if the radio was on, or if I wasn’t so tuned in to it) When I got home the last time, I stuck it in neutral, reved up to 3 grand, no noise. After an hour I went on some errands, No noise. Two days later I drove it up a very steep grade, 6 miles, 65-70 mph, no noise. I don’t understand how something mechanical can make a noise like that, and not keep making it, whether is cooled down or not. It just seems like there would be permanent damage. But it works great, even when it’s whining. No slipping, no jerking. I’ve probably taken it on at least 5 long trips, usually driving at least 5 hours on the highway, it will whine, and it still works fine. I don’t get it.
I use the the Castrol CVT fluid also and never had a problem. (On a 2009 Altima) Also, do you own a battery powered 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet? Seems like you're doing everything manually. It makes life so much easier. If you have either of them, sockets, swivels and extensions you will cut your time on future repairs.
Hey Mike! Glad to hear you're having a good experience with the Castrol CVT fluid too! Actually, I do have a 3/8" electric ratchet and 1/2" impact. I tried using the ratchet but there was no room for it let alone my hand lol. I had to go down to 1/4" swivels to get that corner bolt out on the top 😂 I used the 3/8 electric ratchet when I replaced the exhaust manifold last month, makes it much easier and faster, I love that thing, it's a beast 😁

Even though they say lifetime fluid is dead wrong !!! Preventive maintenance every 30,000 things will last. My 2012 quit working all together heard a pop n it does not go or feel any engagement. I can put in park n it still rolls. I believe the belt snapped! Buying a 2nd hand with low mileage and replacing
I bought a used 2012 Altima for my daughter in 2017. It had 70K miles when I bought it. July 2021, she was at 100K miles, so I flew down to get all of the normal 100K mile services done. I did some things myself, and some things at small shops, but I decided to have the transmission fluid flushed at the Nissan dealership. I asked if they would also "drop the pan and replace the filter". They told me that there is NO FILTER. They did a transmission flush. Since then, I discovered that there is a "filter screen" inside the pan, which is completely replaceable (probably not necessary), but there is also this cartridge filter, which is similar to an oil filter. Hmmmm... seems like this cartridge filter should have been replaced. Next time I visit my daughter, I will check it out to see if they removed that housing and replaced the filter.
Yeah that sounds about right coming from a dealership haha! The "filter screens" are definitely replaceable as well as this cartridge filter. I only found out about this filter by sheer luck. It was hard finding info on this one as most people just assume that there's only one filter, like most cars. After I changed this filter, I noticed that the CVT was "shifting" smoother, it holds it's revs better than before as well. So I definitely recommend changing this one out the next time you have the opportunity. I will say, if you are a big guy like me, it's going to be tricky getting to these 4 bolts! I only had to buy a swivel 10 mm socket because of clearance issues with the upper back bolt. When you tighten them back up, the torque spec is only 37 in-lbs, which is basically hand tight to me lol. Good luck! Thanks for watching! And if you have any questions feel free to let me know 😊
My transmission has also been whining. Will be doing a fluid change soon. Over 100K on my fluid. Stealership didn't recommend me changing it. Said it would cause more issues. However, I felt the whining is due to old fluid lacking the lubrication it needs. Filter and fluid change coming up!
Hello Jon! You are right about those stealerships haha! There are good mechanics and technicians out there but not always. Anyways, the whining issue I had about 3-4 years ago I remember when I was on a long hot road trip during the summer, it never went into limp mode but it was definitely noticeable. Took it to a dealer and they couldn't replicate the problem (always the case lol). Once summer ended I never took it to a long trip again. I changed the fluid by draining and filling two times (as you can watch on our channel). We also used Sea Foam trans tune, which helps condition the fluid and clean out internals and such. I haven't gone on a long road trip in it yet but I did gun it around the highways and such, to shake it down. And the whining wasn't there. I know the real test will be the road trip but I was overall pleased with how everything turned out. It's still running well with no issues. So yeah, I would definitely change the fluid and see if that helps your whining issue. Thanks for watching Jon! 😎👍
@@TrickShiftGarage Exactly my problem. Hot summer days or long trips create enough strain and heat needed for the bearing whine. The transmission really needs to be taxed to hear it. I can also feel it. Dealer always said they don't hear it but you can't drive it that much and take it to a dealer. Also, I have heard that NS-3 fluid might be compatible with our NS-2 systems. NS-3 is far superior to NS-2
Agreed, it's hard to replicate when you have to drive it for hours to get it to whine lol. That Castrol CVT Fluid is compatible with NS-2 and NS-3 too!
You didn't show the back side of the metal filter housing (the part that bolts on with 4 bolts). It must have some kind of gasket or o-ring to seal it or else it will leak. Do you know what it has? Gasket? O-ring? Do you have a part number? Or a link to a picture or diagram of it? Thank you.
Hello Ghills! I'm kicking myself for not showing the other side of the filter housing! So it's O-ring that sits inside housing. I'm currently looking for part number or something on the internet but no luck yet. Nissan considered this filter unserviceable so not very much info on it. I'll let you know if/when I find something though.
@@TrickShiftGarage Nissan is trying to cause the ruination of all of these CVTs so they can sell all new ones. $5000++ out the window for the consumer. I just had the Nissan dealership on Brooks in Missoula MT service my 2015 Nissan Altima CVT tranny. They would not change the inside the transmission belly pan screen or the filter saying Nissan had quit using filters in 2002! I told the service guy that I just watched a complete screen, filter and belly pan removed and cleaned and replaced, then flushed 3 times with fluid. The stinking service jerk said: "There is a lot of strange stuff on the internet"...and he wanted to shake my hand while he was lying to me. I didn't shake that liars hand.
I don't blame you one bit for not shaking his hand! Backyard mechanics like me that can do these important maintenance items to extend the CVTs life why can't a Nissan Tech? They're not supposed to do you can plop down $5k+ for a new one when the old one breaks, because of the lack of maintenance. I definitely wouldn't go back to that dealer though, find a private shop that specializes in Nissan's because that's your only chance on getting the work done if you can't do it yourself. Just wondering how often this filter should be changed? I just bought a 2010 Nissan Altima, 156K miles. My boyfriend and I don't know a thing about CVT transmissions! This has been very helpful to us.
I'd change it out right away because it's probably not been done before. Nissan doesn't have a recommendation on when to change it. Every 30k miles you should change the fluid and mesh filter (at the bottom of the transmission pan) so it would be a good time to do this one too. Hope this helps, thanks for watching! 👍
So believe it or not there's two filters. CVTs need the extra filter because they generate more particles than a normal transmission. So there's the cartridge filter here in this video and then the other one is inside the transmission that sits in the transmission pan. Thanks Candido! I go with Nissan's recommendation to change the transmission fluid every 60k miles (if not sooner), so I would change the filter while changing the fluid so its easier to track and keep up with maintenance logs, plus your under there anyway so you might as well :) As far as pros and cons for fluid that's never been changed - there's really no pros and just cons. CVTs are very finicky and sensitive to foreign matter (such as metal, dirt, moisture and friction material) and must have very clean fluid, which is why this transmission has two transmission filters. CVTs also run hotter than traditional automatics which can break the fluid down sooner. It's not all doom and gloom though, as long as you change the fluid every 60k miles you should avoid most of these troubles. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching! 👍
Is the cartridge filter the only one that needs to be replaced on this CVT? Also, should the pan be dropped and the magnets cleaned? I always have the dealer perform a flush every 30k, but I dont think they are changing any filter or cleaning magnets. Edit: I just read in the comments you said there was also a mesh filter and I found your video explaining that as well. Should both be changed at the 30k interval? Thanks!
Yes, I would recommend both of them to be changed every 30k miles for maximum longevity. CVTs are very sensitive to dirty fluid so keeping the fluid clean as possible is the way to go. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! 🙂
Love your channel you've really helped me a lot. I had to replace my driver's side window the other day it took me 8 freakin hours. I also finally found the air leak it was the air hose in the back the accordian rubber one right after the maf sensor that plugs into the throttle body it was all cracked up couldn't see it until I "stretched" it out. I use Idamitsu cvt fluid its half price. Mine didn't like valvoline or castrol at all it ran horribly. 2 of my spark plug wells are full of oil where are you located? Replacing this is not something I am comfortable doing, plus I don't have the tools. I'll pay you $700 to replace mine lol. Unless you charge more I mean. I just keep getting ripped off by my mechanics.
Thank you so much! I haven't had to replace any windows yet but I can only imagine the struggle with it lol. And I had the same issue with my air inlet hose, it was all cracked up inside the folds of the elbow portion. As far as the oil in the spark plug wells, you have a leaking valve cover gasket, its not sealing properly anymore. It's a pretty involved job because you have to remove the engine mount on the passenger side of the engine to have access to all the bolts. Unfortunately, I can't do the job currently as I am knee deep in other projects already. Great video, I have the 2013 Altima coupe that has this type cover and filter. I have read that the recommended trans fluid change is 30,000 miles. But my question is, is there a gasket or o ring that goes on the filter cover/case? Also what is the part number to that filter. The one I bought is 31726-28XOA and o ring 31526-3VXOA but good thing i measured the length before removing the cover because it seems this is not the correct filter. I seems to be too long -it measures 2 1/2 inches long. The one in your video looks shorter and is most likely the one I need. I appreciate your information.
Hi there! Yes, there is an o-ring that I ended up reusing in the video because i couldn't find the part number. Eventually, we figured it out and got the part number which is the same one you got, 31526-3VXOA. For the filter itself, I bought a Duralast branded one from the local Autozone. I checked the website to see if it would fit the coupe model but it didn't have an option, however it does fit the 2013 4-cylinder sedans though, so I think it should fit yours. Appreciate the video, great tutorial. Do you know if a 2008 2.0 Sentra has that cartridge filter and where it's located? I would assume it's in the same place as your Altima, but I'm not finding any info on it
It does have that cartridge style filter as well as the mesh filter inside the bottom of the transmission. I'm not sure on the location but the 2013 and up Sentras had them on the outside of the CVT, with better access through the driver side wheel well. Maybe yours will be there too. Hope this helps! 👍
Thx for the video. I changed my CVT filter today on 2007 Altima and found that it was difficult to press the new filter in. It took a lot of force. Did you experience this too?
Yup! It took me a few tries to finally get it back on. My tip for next time would be to coat the inlet with fresh CVT fluid as well as the gasket that slides over it. 😉
You are right. I did coat the rubber gasket with CVT fluid, but it was still hard to press in. Don't know how you did it without coating. After pressing in the new filter, it was also a bit difficult to get the metal filter housing back on without the contacting the filter in the process, as the other parts of the car got in the way of the outside of the filter housing. So I wonder if I might have loosen the filter without knowing, since I cannot see the filter after covering it.

Hello Jose! No, silicone gasket maker isn't necessary. I know I didn't show this in the video, but there's a rubber gasket on the housing that helps it seal to the transmission when you tighten the bolts down. After your done, just make sure you turn the car on and go under there to check for leaks to make sure it's sealing correctly. Thanks for watching! 🙂
Yeah, so I was digging around (again) online and found out that Mitsubishi and Nissan apparently shared the same transmission and have the same gasket on this filter housing. I can't confirm if this is true or not yet, but I did find the gasket on the Mitsubishi parts website and ordered it. Once I get my hands on it I am going to open it up and test it out and find out if it works or not and will let you guys know! 😉

Hi dear i have Nissan versa note 2014 The transmission cooler was leaked and water fluid was mixed Then i clean valve body and filter also And put it new fluid But I didn’t replace this cooler filter because I don’t know before Now when i put in drive or reverse in parking position car feeling jerk But while driving everything is fine no any shifting problem So please let me know if I change this filter will solve this issue
Having water in the transmission is a big problem. With that being said, I don't think replacing this filter will solve the hard shifting your experiencing but you can try it and see if it helps. Thanks for watching! 🙂
On the video right at the time of 3:51 you used a needle nose pliers to pull out a small rubber o-ring/flat washer.... I did not see you put one back in with the new filter is that required or was that up inside the top of the new filter?
That small rubber seal was actually part of the old filter, it came off when I pulled it out. The new filter should have the same rubber seal at the top of the filter.

It could be the filter, but more than likely the fluid needs to be changed. My Altima used to start whining on long trips. After I drained the transmission fluid and refilled with fresh fluid, it stopped. My transmission has been whining lately when very hot or stressed. I inquired multiple times at the Nissan dealer and the guy told me not to change to fluid because it can cause more issues. I find that hard to believe. Seems that they are looking forward to a transmission job! No fluid lasts a lifetime and the additives will break down as well as moisture content. I will be changing mine soon and replacing it with genuine Nissan fluid. Great to know that the Castrol isn't giving you all problems. Good backup! I am one of the lucky ones who have a transmission pan drain plug. Not all these got one and therefore would require a pan drop. What a mess that wouuld be!

So...there is an o-ring in the housing that I failed to replace, I couldn't find the o-ring anywhere. I think the green one is Nissan's CVT fluid, when I first checked mine it was red so didn't think much of it. As long as you're using NS-2 spec fluid, you should be fine. Thanks for watching! 👍
Is it my imagination or did you not put a new housing gasket on it? I didn’t see any housing gasket at all but they do have them that you need to replace when changing the filters.

I did shocka and struts around 250k on my altima but with 423k the suspension feels pretty good stillm i changed most of my mounts in the upper 300k mile range and my transmission moint seems to go bad. I do use the sport mode alot and jerk the car back and forth lol...

3:48 you took the old gasket out. 5:08 and you put in the new filter without the gasket. I feel confused, shouldn’t there be a new gasket?. If there was, where could i buy the gasket?. Will it come with the the filter when i buy it?.
Hi! So that gasket that was pulled with the pliers should come with the new filter. When I pulled the old filter out the gasket decided it wasn't ready to come off yet lol. So that gasket should stay on the new filter and seal between the filter and the housing it pushes in on, it's a tight fit so may have to wrestle it in there. Thought I'd answer a few questions for past and future viewers. There is an o-ring under the filter housing. I don't know the part #. You do not have to drain the pan to change this filter. Changing this filter should be done every 25,000 - 30,000 miles per my Nissan guy. This is the IMPORTANT filter. Once it gets clogged, your transmission will start to run hot and that's when damage occurs. I try and stick with genuine OEM parts. I know they are are pricier but I don't trust some of the other imports. According to the same Nissan guy and others, the CVT oil is also supposed to be changed out at 25,000 to 30,000 miles. Sounds like lots of people here have way more miles apparently without issue. My thoughts are always pay a little now or a lot more later on.

Update - the O-ring is Nissan OEM Part # 31526-1XFOA. The remote filter is Nissan OEM part # 31726-1XFOO. It took me forever to find these correct parts. Its also better if you get OEM part # 21626-32UOO - 2 small copper washers for the transmission oil line to the remote filter. Removing this line makes changing the small filter WAY easier in my opinion.
How do I contact the guy on Trick Shift garage? I want to know if the CVT Transmission Filter Replacement Housing has an O-Ring Seal or Gasket. The video does not show an O-Ring for the housing and Nissan parts departments don't have a part number for the O-Ring - if it has an O-Ring. Hi Ed! So I've actually made a video on this exact problem. There is an O-ring that is on the Housing that I can't find the part number for it as well. Currently, I've been told that there is a kit on eBay for this transmission that supposedly has this particular replacement O-ring, but I'm not really interested in the kit as of right now. When I replaced my cartridge filter the O-ring looked to be in good shape and it hasn't leaked out the housing since. I'll keep looking for this gasket and will be sure to update you when/if I find the part number. Thanks for the reply. I will attempt to change this tomorrow as I dropped the pan to change the fluid and filter today. Everything went fairly smoothly until 2 of the bolts do not want to go back in correctly. (These 2 bolts were hard to get out compared to the others, Had to turn them a lot more than the others) They feel like they want to cross thread but I don't want to damage the bolt holes. Not sure what to do as I spent a couple hours just trying to get these bolts to turn properly. Will try to get a couple new bolts to see if they will work.
I was watching this where I couldn’t hear very well so if this was said I apologize. Is there a torque spec for the bolts around the filter? I know the pan itself is 70ft-lbs. never seen one for this filter or for the filter bolts in inside the pan.
That's okay Austin, the audio does get wonky under the car sometimes lol. So, I'm sure there's a torque spec for these bolts but haven't found it yet. What I ended up doing is tighten them down by hand until they were snug and then checked under the car while it was running to make sure it wasn't leaking. Idk man i’ve always read never to change the fluid on CVT’s if the fluid looks brown and smells burnt. Even Nissan wouldn’t change my fluid on my 08 Altima at 160k miles.
I've had issues with my 07 Altima. Intermittently, it acts like it's slipping, needed 4k rpms to get to 30 or 40 mph... I thought the tranny was done for. I pulled over and turned the car off. Started it back up and it ran normal. Seemed like an electrical issue.... A mechanic friend said change the filters, it can get clogged and cause strange signals.
It's working great, no issues at all with it. Just make sure it's compatible with your Corolla's CVT fluid. It lists a bunch of different fluids it works with lol. Thanks for watching! 👍
according to my dealer 2009 Nissan Altima dont have this filter its only for Altima 2012 and up yet i see the housing in my car like wth...i dont what to do where i live they dont have thois filter anywhere ...how come the dealer say my car dont have this filter
Well, from what I've heard in the comments, to Nissan, this filter is a non-serviceable part... even though it actually is a serviceable part, you can buy them at most autoparts stores, I bought mine at my local Autozone. @@TrickShiftGarage i bought the 2012 altima L33 cvt filter form the dealership and it worked fine , what's shock me that they kept denying that my car dont have this part , and in the end they said there is such a filter but it is inside the valve body and can only be changed with the valve body omg, really thank you for opening our eyes for this , the car run smoothly now reduced fuel consumption and no more whining noise from the cvt i also added a in line cooler for the cvt in the same time now its perfect but it was really clogged the filter , the cvt is clocked 120k miles without ever being serviced only one fluid change at 40k

Hey Fernando! It's been running great with the Castrol! I've had it running Castrol for the last 6k miles and have no complaints, so go for it bro. It's much cheaper and plentiful than Nissan's NS-2 factory fluid. Just make sure on the back of the bottle it says it's compatible with NS-2. I believe mine said it worked with NS-1, NS-2, and the newer NS-3 fluid. Hope this helps you, thanks for watching! 🙂👍
Yes, it's best to change it every time you change the fluid and pan filter. CVTs are very touchy when it comes to dirty CVT fluid, so keeping the filters fresh will keep it going longer 😉

Hi, it could possibly be that the transmission fluid level is low. Unfortunately, Nissan stopped providing dipsticks to check the level. Taking it to a Nissan service shop, they should be able to check it for you. Hope this helps! 👍

No, but I would just check the level to make sure it's not too low afterwards. When I replaced my filter I had a drain pan to catch the fluid, but there wasn't much fluid that came out. Thanks for watching! 👍
I am going to take a look under my 2017 Rogue Sport SV and see if I can get to the bolts. Mine may be a more accessible. I know on mine when I did the front differential it was super easy because on that model they didn't put the drain for it directly over the exhaust pipe. I also like that my oil filter wasn't in the wheel well. What bonehead put it there on the 2.5 liter models? Also some Toyotas are like that too with it in the wheel well and you have to take the F-ing wheel off to get to it. I am so glad never to have had a car so stupidly designed!! It would have a dent in the fender that is over that oil filter from me banging my head in disgust with the terrible design!! I used to own a Volkswagen and some people knock them for various reasons. Well, once you get it on ramps the oil filter is accessible under the car (and not in the wheel well). Some people knock German cars but a lot of those even have the filter up at the top where it would make changing the oil a breeze if you have one of those nifty oil extractors!! That is how it should be, easy and not a major pain in the @ss!! I have heard that the Tacomas are also really horrible to change oil with too. It is something to do with taking the panel off under the truck to get to the filter and all. I wonder how many guys who own those never put the panel back on just to save time and save themselves from the aggravation.
Unfortunately not. You're CVT is different than the CVT in this video 😔 It could have a filter like this on it somewhere though. You can try following the transmission cooler linesand see if there's a housing similar to this one, this filter is for filtering the fluid after it leaves the radiator and heads back to the CVT. Wow don't know which is worse yours or my son's 2011 Cube same filter under the trans pan. This is a cvt rebuilt with 60,000 miles oem cvt failed at 106,000 miles 2 cvt fliud changes at 30,000 miles. Never a filter & screen replacment.
Wow! Yeah... this filter was never replaced until this video, honestly I didn't know it existed. And Nissan doesn't say much about maintaining our CVTs other than it's a "maintenance free" transmission. They don't offer any services for this filter, in their eyes it just doesn't exist. My Altima's at 200k+ miles, and I know it's not long for this world, it's just a matter of time before it implodes 😂😭

My son's OEM trans-CVT fluid was changed at 80,000 then at 30,000 miles at Nissan. Still failed at 106,000 miles. Rebuilt cost me $3500 now we have 60,000 with two fluid changes. We are just trying to make it last two more years.

You came to the right channel dude. I've done so much maintenance following this channel. And please start by changing the CVT fluid. I'd recommend using Amsoil Trans fluid and Amsoil motor oil. Best of all worlds.

Thank you for the video. My 2012 Altima has had an issue not knowing what "gear" to go into. I know it doesn't have gears, we called it a hic-cup in shifting. This external filter change at 130,000 miles fixed that issue. I've been babying this tranny due to the issues they have. I wish I knew about this external filter prior to now. I've flushed the tranny fluid twice by draining the pan & disconnecting the return line coming back from radiator. Add new Idemitsu CVT type N, run the engine & keep doing this till you see new fluid coming out of the return line. I also added a Nissan tranny fluid cooler - great fit.
Though the transmission was toast and so did a transmission shop. Then I googled the problem and replaced the rotation sensor and it worked like new. These transmissions are simpler and less parts than clutch transmission. People who don’t understand them make up horror stories about them

@@BretDouglas transmission rotation sensor. Remove the air box and it's in top of the CVT transmission held with one 10mm bolt. When these go bad all sorts of weird things happen like jerking, high rpm but slower speed etc.

Great video. I wanted to change the ones on all of our Nissan NV200s in our fleet and the dealer berated me when I asked them about it. Almost like they didn't want me to do it?!? So I bought the filters and did them all myself! This is a great 200k miles service tip!

Changing that filter might make it run better since it catches more of the debris than the one in the pan would. My logic is that a screen simply will *not* catch all of it. It may stop metal from going in but it won't stop everything.
I have a 2011 Altima i bought brand new and its just hit 60,000 miles. I got a transmission filter kit and it came with the cooler filter which is a good thing cause until i saw that i didn't know it had that. Hadn't seen a videos about it until i found yours. I don't have a problem changing it along with the main filter, I just needed to know where it was located and how to get to it, your video was VERY helpful. I just like to know what im looking at before I start something when possible and i look forward to getting this service out of the way back to other things. Thanx so much.

@djchristian8880 I didn't have any problems with it, I just wanted to do the service interval maintenance on it before it decided to start giving up a problem. I bought the car brand new in 2011 and it just turned 60,000 miles so I try to keep everything up so I don't have any more problems than necessary.

At 200k miles these Altima’s need just about everything! Alternator pulley bearing, oil pan almost rusted through, all front end suspension components less the wheel bearing housing. That’s struts, lower control arms, axles, tie rod ends, swaybar links and wheel bearings. I’ve never changed this filter either!! Now I’m replacing rear suspension parts. However the body still looks good less a few minor dents. Oh and I have to replace the valve cover and gasket it’s plastic and leaks well. Also replaced the exhaust manifold/cat converter and secondary cat, yup has a second cat after the flex pipe. This car keeps me busy
I'm at 200k now and agree 100%! We'll have more videos on how to replace these parts as needed. I've noticed my oil pan too having some rust on it. I think the rear shocks might be ready to replace, the rear is sagging a bit lately lol.
@@TrickShiftGarage yup rear shocks are gas charged and hold the car up. I replaced those too but had a heck of a time removing the lower retaining bolt as it had seized in to the rubber bushings steel tube. All the hammering can't break it loose because the rubber absorbs the shock. My airgun finally spun the rummer bushing in the alloy mount. I later drilled out the bolt and put the old bushing back in. Good luck finding the bolt thread size, I got one that was close and just airgunned it in as it just threads into the shock mount.

Mine started messing with my bank when at 70k+ miles the front struts needed changing. and the list goes on after that.
I've changed all 4 engine mounts following this channel, valve cover, and so on.
I'm starting to believe that CVT are not as bad as people picture it to be.
The problem with CVT is peoples ignorance and most notably, mechanics ignorance.
Most mechanics have the mentality that the transmission fluid is a lifetime fluid, and ITS NOT! and with that mentality, CVT go bad for not giving it proper maintenance.
If you've driven at high speeds like i have, you definitely need to change it since the transmission runs very hot. And as soon as that fluid turns too hot, it looses the viscosity and friction properties.

@dr.greenthumb6535 I'm not sure what it's called officially but I always the CVT cartridge filter. The filter inside the pan isn't the cartridge style, so it's usually enough to differentiate it to the Parts store. Here is the Nissan part numbers that could come in handy. (The o-ring seals the housing to prevent leaks, I couldn't find it at the time this video was made so you should definitely replace it if you can)

Cartridge filter # 31726-28XOA

The trans in my 09 Altima at around 104k never slipped, jerked, or gave any indication of trouble till I noticed a noise at 30mph, that sounded like an old std transmission, with a bearing going out. My mechanic pulled the pan and it had lots of metal debris in it. I never changed the fluid or the filter. We put in a factory rebuilt trans in. On long trips is was hearing a noise like a alternator bearing going, or a power steering pump. ( probably wouldn’t hear it if the radio was on, or if I wasn’t so tuned in to it) When I got home the last time, I stuck it in neutral, reved up to 3 grand, no noise. After an hour I went on some errands, No noise. Two days later I drove it up a very steep grade, 6 miles, 65-70 mph, no noise. I don’t understand how something mechanical can make a noise like that, and not keep making it, whether is cooled down or not. It just seems like there would be permanent damage. But it works great, even when it’s whining. No slipping, no jerking. I’ve probably taken it on at least 5 long trips, usually driving at least 5 hours on the highway, it will whine, and it still works fine. I don’t get it.
I use the the Castrol CVT fluid also and never had a problem. (On a 2009 Altima) Also, do you own a battery powered 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet? Seems like you're doing everything manually. It makes life so much easier. If you have either of them, sockets, swivels and extensions you will cut your time on future repairs.

Actually, I do have a 3/8" electric ratchet and 1/2" impact. I tried using the ratchet but there was no room for it let alone my hand lol. I had to go down to 1/4" swivels to get that corner bolt out on the top 😂
I used the 3/8 electric ratchet when I replaced the exhaust manifold last month, makes it much easier and faster, I love that thing, it's a beast 😁

Even though they say lifetime fluid is dead wrong !!! Preventive maintenance every 30,000 things will last. My 2012 quit working all together heard a pop n it does not go or feel any engagement. I can put in park n it still rolls. I believe the belt snapped! Buying a 2nd hand with low mileage and replacing

I bought a used 2012 Altima for my daughter in 2017. It had 70K miles when I bought it. July 2021, she was at 100K miles, so I flew down to get all of the normal 100K mile services done. I did some things myself, and some things at small shops, but I decided to have the transmission fluid flushed at the Nissan dealership. I asked if they would also "drop the pan and replace the filter". They told me that there is NO FILTER. They did a transmission flush.
Since then, I discovered that there is a "filter screen" inside the pan, which is completely replaceable (probably not necessary), but there is also this cartridge filter, which is similar to an oil filter.
Hmmmm... seems like this cartridge filter should have been replaced.
Next time I visit my daughter, I will check it out to see if they removed that housing and replaced the filter.
Yeah that sounds about right coming from a dealership haha! The "filter screens" are definitely replaceable as well as this cartridge filter. I only found out about this filter by sheer luck. It was hard finding info on this one as most people just assume that there's only one filter, like most cars.
After I changed this filter, I noticed that the CVT was "shifting" smoother, it holds it's revs better than before as well. So I definitely recommend changing this one out the next time you have the opportunity.
I will say, if you are a big guy like me, it's going to be tricky getting to these 4 bolts! I only had to buy a swivel 10 mm socket because of clearance issues with the upper back bolt. When you tighten them back up, the torque spec is only 37 in-lbs, which is basically hand tight to me lol.

That upper left bolt is a bear. No wonder Nissan says it’s not serviceable. Also found it difficult to push the filter on.
My transmission has also been whining. Will be doing a fluid change soon. Over 100K on my fluid. Stealership didn't recommend me changing it. Said it would cause more issues. However, I felt the whining is due to old fluid lacking the lubrication it needs. Filter and fluid change coming up!
Hello Jon! You are right about those stealerships haha! There are good mechanics and technicians out there but not always. Anyways, the whining issue I had about 3-4 years ago I remember when I was on a long hot road trip during the summer, it never went into limp mode but it was definitely noticeable. Took it to a dealer and they couldn't replicate the problem (always the case lol). Once summer ended I never took it to a long trip again.
I changed the fluid by draining and filling two times (as you can watch on our channel). We also used Sea Foam trans tune, which helps condition the fluid and clean out internals and such. I haven't gone on a long road trip in it yet but I did gun it around the highways and such, to shake it down. And the whining wasn't there. I know the real test will be the road trip but I was overall pleased with how everything turned out. It's still running well with no issues.

@@TrickShiftGarage Exactly my problem. Hot summer days or long trips create enough strain and heat needed for the bearing whine. The transmission really needs to be taxed to hear it. I can also feel it. Dealer always said they don't hear it but you can't drive it that much and take it to a dealer. Also, I have heard that NS-3 fluid might be compatible with our NS-2 systems. NS-3 is far superior to NS-2

You didn't show the back side of the metal filter housing (the part that bolts on with 4 bolts). It must have some kind of gasket or o-ring to seal it or else it will leak. Do you know what it has? Gasket? O-ring? Do you have a part number? Or a link to a picture or diagram of it? Thank you.

So it's O-ring that sits inside housing. I'm currently looking for part number or something on the internet but no luck yet. Nissan considered this filter unserviceable so not very much info on it. I'll let you know if/when I find something though.
@@TrickShiftGarage Nissan is trying to cause the ruination of all of these CVTs so they can sell all new ones. $5000++ out the window for the consumer. I just had the Nissan dealership on Brooks in Missoula MT service my 2015 Nissan Altima CVT tranny. They would not change the inside the transmission belly pan screen or the filter saying Nissan had quit using filters in 2002! I told the service guy that I just watched a complete screen, filter and belly pan removed and cleaned and replaced, then flushed 3 times with fluid. The stinking service jerk said: "There is a lot of strange stuff on the internet"...and he wanted to shake my hand while he was lying to me. I didn't shake that liars hand.
I don't blame you one bit for not shaking his hand! Backyard mechanics like me that can do these important maintenance items to extend the CVTs life why can't a Nissan Tech? They're not supposed to do you can plop down $5k+ for a new one when the old one breaks, because of the lack of maintenance. I definitely wouldn't go back to that dealer though, find a private shop that specializes in Nissan's because that's your only chance on getting the work done if you can't do it yourself. Just wondering how often this filter should be changed? I just bought a 2010 Nissan Altima, 156K miles. My boyfriend and I don't know a thing about CVT transmissions! This has been very helpful to us.
I'd change it out right away because it's probably not been done before. Nissan doesn't have a recommendation on when to change it. Every 30k miles you should change the fluid and mesh filter (at the bottom of the transmission pan) so it would be a good time to do this one too. Hope this helps, thanks for watching! 👍

So believe it or not there's two filters. CVTs need the extra filter because they generate more particles than a normal transmission. So there's the cartridge filter here in this video and then the other one is inside the transmission that sits in the transmission pan. Here's our video of showing where the other filter is:

Thanks Candido! I go with Nissan's recommendation to change the transmission fluid every 60k miles (if not sooner), so I would change the filter while changing the fluid so its easier to track and keep up with maintenance logs, plus your under there anyway so you might as well :)
As far as pros and cons for fluid that's never been changed - there's really no pros and just cons. CVTs are very finicky and sensitive to foreign matter (such as metal, dirt, moisture and friction material) and must have very clean fluid, which is why this transmission has two transmission filters. CVTs also run hotter than traditional automatics which can break the fluid down sooner. It's not all doom and gloom though, as long as you change the fluid every 60k miles you should avoid most of these troubles. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching! 👍

Is the cartridge filter the only one that needs to be replaced on this CVT? Also, should the pan be dropped and the magnets cleaned? I always have the dealer perform a flush every 30k, but I dont think they are changing any filter or cleaning magnets.
Edit: I just read in the comments you said there was also a mesh filter and I found your video explaining that as well.

Yes, I would recommend both of them to be changed every 30k miles for maximum longevity. CVTs are very sensitive to dirty fluid so keeping the fluid clean as possible is the way to go. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! 🙂
Love your channel you've really helped me a lot. I had to replace my driver's side window the other day it took me 8 freakin hours. I also finally found the air leak it was the air hose in the back the accordian rubber one right after the maf sensor that plugs into the throttle body it was all cracked up couldn't see it until I "stretched" it out. I use Idamitsu cvt fluid its half price. Mine didn't like valvoline or castrol at all it ran horribly. 2 of my spark plug wells are full of oil where are you located? Replacing this is not something I am comfortable doing, plus I don't have the tools. I'll pay you $700 to replace mine lol. Unless you charge more I mean. I just keep getting ripped off by my mechanics.
Thank you so much! I haven't had to replace any windows yet but I can only imagine the struggle with it lol. And I had the same issue with my air inlet hose, it was all cracked up inside the folds of the elbow portion. As far as the oil in the spark plug wells, you have a leaking valve cover gasket, its not sealing properly anymore. It's a pretty involved job because you have to remove the engine mount on the passenger side of the engine to have access to all the bolts. Unfortunately, I can't do the job currently as I am knee deep in other projects already. We do have a video on how to replace the valve cover here:

As far as getting ripped off, ALWAYS seek a second (or even third) opinion on your car, tell them what the other mechanics told you and see if they agree or disagree, sometimes, they'll tell on each other and perhaps give you a better price too 😉

Friend, today I tried to remove that filter and I couldn't because I didn't have the right tools. What wrench should I use to remove the 4 screws?

Great video, I have the 2013 Altima coupe that has this type cover and filter. I have read that the recommended trans fluid change is 30,000 miles. But my question is, is there a gasket or o ring that goes on the filter cover/case? Also what is the part number to that filter. The one I bought is 31726-28XOA and o ring 31526-3VXOA but good thing i measured the length before removing the cover because it seems this is not the correct filter. I seems to be too long -it measures 2 1/2 inches long. The one in your video looks shorter and is most likely the one I need. I appreciate your information.
Hi there! Yes, there is an o-ring that I ended up reusing in the video because i couldn't find the part number. Eventually, we figured it out and got the part number which is the same one you got, 31526-3VXOA.
For the filter itself, I bought a Duralast branded one from the local Autozone. I checked the website to see if it would fit the coupe model but it didn't have an option, however it does fit the 2013 4-cylinder sedans though, so I think it should fit yours.

Appreciate the video, great tutorial. Do you know if a 2008 2.0 Sentra has that cartridge filter and where it's located? I would assume it's in the same place as your Altima, but I'm not finding any info on it
It does have that cartridge style filter as well as the mesh filter inside the bottom of the transmission. I'm not sure on the location but the 2013 and up Sentras had them on the outside of the CVT, with better access through the driver side wheel well. Maybe yours will be there too. Hope this helps! 👍

Thx for the video. I changed my CVT filter today on 2007 Altima and found that it was difficult to press the new filter in. It took a lot of force. Did you experience this too?
Yup! It took me a few tries to finally get it back on. My tip for next time would be to coat the inlet with fresh CVT fluid as well as the gasket that slides over it. 😉
You are right. I did coat the rubber gasket with CVT fluid, but it was still hard to press in. Don't know how you did it without coating.
After pressing in the new filter, it was also a bit difficult to get the metal filter housing back on without the contacting the filter in the process, as the other parts of the car got in the way of the outside of the filter housing. So I wonder if I might have loosen the filter without knowing, since I cannot see the filter after covering it.
It should be fine, the housing should keep the filter from coming off.

Glad it's helpful Richard! Outside of the normal maintenance items, if you have the CVT focus on making sure you change the fluid every 30k miles, religiously lol. Hello Jose! No, silicone gasket maker isn't necessary. I know I didn't show this in the video, but there's a rubber gasket on the housing that helps it seal to the transmission when you tighten the bolts down. After your done, just make sure you turn the car on and go under there to check for leaks to make sure it's sealing correctly. Thanks for watching! 🙂

Yeah, so I was digging around (again) online and found out that Mitsubishi and Nissan apparently shared the same transmission and have the same gasket on this filter housing. I can't confirm if this is true or not yet, but I did find the gasket on the Mitsubishi parts website and ordered it.
Once I get my hands on it I am going to open it up and test it out and find out if it works or not and will let you guys know! 😉
I used a bit of silicon, mainly just to make sure the holes were lined up.

Then i clean valve body and filter also
And put it new fluid
But I didn’t replace this cooler filter because I don’t know before
Now when i put in drive or reverse in parking position car feeling jerk

Having water in the transmission is a big problem. With that being said, I don't think replacing this filter will solve the hard shifting your experiencing but you can try it and see if it helps. Thanks for watching! 🙂

On the video right at the time of 3:51 you used a needle nose pliers to pull out a small rubber o-ring/flat washer.... I did not see you put one back in with the new filter is that required or was that up inside the top of the new filter?
That small rubber seal was actually part of the old filter, it came off when I pulled it out. The new filter should have the same rubber seal at the top of the filter.

My 2008 Nissan Altima 2.5 is whining after a decent while of driving do you think it’s the filter because I bought the car from a sketchy dealership
It could be the filter, but more than likely the fluid needs to be changed. My Altima used to start whining on long trips. After I drained the transmission fluid and refilled with fresh fluid, it stopped.
Changing the filter wouldn't hurt anything, but my goal would be to drain and refill the fluid and see if that fixes the problem. 🙂

My transmission has been whining lately when very hot or stressed. I inquired multiple times at the Nissan dealer and the guy told me not to change to fluid because it can cause more issues. I find that hard to believe. Seems that they are looking forward to a transmission job! No fluid lasts a lifetime and the additives will break down as well as moisture content. I will be changing mine soon and replacing it with genuine Nissan fluid. Great to know that the Castrol isn't giving you all problems. Good backup! I am one of the lucky ones who have a transmission pan drain plug. Not all these got one and therefore would require a pan drop. What a mess that wouuld be!

Why is the cvt transmission fluid red, isn't it supposed to be like a greenish tint?
I think the green one is Nissan's CVT fluid, when I first checked mine it was red so didn't think much of it. As long as you're using NS-2 spec fluid, you should be fine. Thanks for watching! 👍

I did shocka and struts around 250k on my altima but with 423k the suspension feels pretty good stillm i changed most of my mounts in the upper 300k mile range and my transmission moint seems to go bad. I do use the sport mode alot and jerk the car back and forth lol...

Hi! So that gasket that was pulled with the pliers should come with the new filter. When I pulled the old filter out the gasket decided it wasn't ready to come off yet lol. So that gasket should stay on the new filter and seal between the filter and the housing it pushes in on, it's a tight fit so may have to wrestle it in there. Thought I'd answer a few questions for past and future viewers. There is an o-ring under the filter housing. I don't know the part #. You do not have to drain the pan to change this filter. Changing this filter should be done every 25,000 - 30,000 miles per my Nissan guy. This is the IMPORTANT filter. Once it gets clogged, your transmission will start to run hot and that's when damage occurs. I try and stick with genuine OEM parts. I know they are are pricier but I don't trust some of the other imports. According to the same Nissan guy and others, the CVT oil is also supposed to be changed out at 25,000 to 30,000 miles. Sounds like lots of people here have way more miles apparently without issue. My thoughts are always pay a little now or a lot more later on.

My 2012 Nissian has been running smooth for 2 years until now, noticing a wheezing/ whistling sound and rpm drops around 2k guessing now it’s my trans, haven’t replaced fluid or filter so this definitely helps!!

Update - the O-ring is Nissan OEM Part # 31526-1XFOA. The remote filter is Nissan OEM part # 31726-1XFOO. It took me forever to find these correct parts. Its also better if you get OEM part # 21626-32UOO - 2 small copper washers for the transmission oil line to the remote filter. Removing this line makes changing the small filter WAY easier in my opinion.

Hi Ed! So I've actually made a video on this exact problem. There is an O-ring that is on the Housing that I can't find the part number for it as well. Currently, I've been told that there is a kit on eBay for this transmission that supposedly has this particular replacement O-ring, but I'm not really interested in the kit as of right now.
When I replaced my cartridge filter the O-ring looked to be in good shape and it hasn't leaked out the housing since. I'll keep looking for this gasket and will be sure to update you when/if I find the part number.

Thanks for the reply. I will attempt to change this tomorrow as I dropped the pan to change the fluid and filter today. Everything went fairly smoothly until 2 of the bolts do not want to go back in correctly. (These 2 bolts were hard to get out compared to the others, Had to turn them a lot more than the others) They feel like they want to cross thread but I don't want to damage the bolt holes. Not sure what to do as I spent a couple hours just trying to get these bolts to turn properly. Will try to get a couple new bolts to see if they will work.

Is there a torque spec for the bolts around the filter? I know the pan itself is 70ft-lbs. never seen one for this filter or for the filter bolts in inside the pan.
That's okay Austin, the audio does get wonky under the car sometimes lol.
So, I'm sure there's a torque spec for these bolts but haven't found it yet. What I ended up doing is tighten them down by hand until they were snug and then checked under the car while it was running to make sure it wasn't leaking.

Idk man i’ve always read never to change the fluid on CVT’s if the fluid looks brown and smells burnt. Even Nissan wouldn’t change my fluid on my 08 Altima at 160k miles.
I've had issues with my 07 Altima. Intermittently, it acts like it's slipping, needed 4k rpms to get to 30 or 40 mph... I thought the tranny was done for. I pulled over and turned the car off. Started it back up and it ran normal. Seemed like an electrical issue.... A mechanic friend said change the filters, it can get clogged and cause strange signals.
Our 2014 altima is doing the same thing. Did fresh fluid and filters fix your problem?

Well, from what I've heard in the comments, to Nissan, this filter is a non-serviceable part... even though it actually is a serviceable part, you can buy them at most autoparts stores, I bought mine at my local Autozone. There's a link in the description of the video so you can order it online.

really thank you for opening our eyes for this , the car run smoothly now reduced fuel consumption and no more whining noise from the cvt i also added a in line cooler for the cvt in the same time now its perfect but it was really clogged the filter , the cvt is clocked 120k miles without ever being serviced only one fluid change at 40k

Hey Fernando! It's been running great with the Castrol! I've had it running Castrol for the last 6k miles and have no complaints, so go for it bro.
It's much cheaper and plentiful than Nissan's NS-2 factory fluid. Just make sure on the back of the bottle it says it's compatible with NS-2. I believe mine said it worked with NS-1, NS-2, and the newer NS-3 fluid. Hope this helps you, thanks for watching! 🙂👍

Yes, it's best to change it every time you change the fluid and pan filter. CVTs are very touchy when it comes to dirty CVT fluid, so keeping the filters fresh will keep it going longer 😉

I have a 2017 and recently whike driving it acted like it was stuck in 1st gear?Happened randomly whike driving?I stopped put it in park and it took back off with no issue.Im still nervous does anyone have a clue what happened??Im lost this is my first cvt
Hi, it could possibly be that the transmission fluid level is low. Unfortunately, Nissan stopped providing dipsticks to check the level. Taking it to a Nissan service shop, they should be able to check it for you. Hope this helps! 👍
@@TrickShiftGarage I ordered a older altima dipstick and its registering?I also added a little bars cvt trans fix and it seems ok now but it pitched a huge fit the other day and worried me now I don't trust it

Do I need to drain the transmission oil out the pan before I do this?
No, but I would just check the level to make sure it's not too low afterwards. When I replaced my filter I had a drain pan to catch the fluid, but there wasn't much fluid that came out. Thanks for watching! 👍

The nissan altima's and maximum's go 300,000 miles and more. Have to do regular maintaince.
I am going to take a look under my 2017 Rogue Sport SV and see if I can get to the bolts. Mine may be a more accessible. I know on mine when I did the front differential it was super easy because on that model they didn't put the drain for it directly over the exhaust pipe. I also like that my oil filter wasn't in the wheel well. What bonehead put it there on the 2.5 liter models? Also some Toyotas are like that too with it in the wheel well and you have to take the F-ing wheel off to get to it. I am so glad never to have had a car so stupidly designed!! It would have a dent in the fender that is over that oil filter from me banging my head in disgust with the terrible design!! I used to own a Volkswagen and some people knock them for various reasons. Well, once you get it on ramps the oil filter is accessible under the car (and not in the wheel well). Some people knock German cars but a lot of those even have the filter up at the top where it would make changing the oil a breeze if you have one of those nifty oil extractors!! That is how it should be, easy and not a major pain in the @ss!! I have heard that the Tacomas are also really horrible to change oil with too. It is something to do with taking the panel off under the truck to get to the filter and all. I wonder how many guys who own those never put the panel back on just to save time and save themselves from the aggravation.

Unfortunately not. You're CVT is different than the CVT in this video 😔
It could have a filter like this on it somewhere though. You can try following the transmission cooler linesand see if there's a housing similar to this one, this filter is for filtering the fluid after it leaves the radiator and heads back to the CVT. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Wow don't know which is worse yours or my son's 2011 Cube same filter under the trans pan. This is a cvt rebuilt with 60,000 miles oem cvt failed at 106,000 miles 2 cvt fliud changes at 30,000 miles. Never a filter & screen replacment.
Wow! Yeah... this filter was never replaced until this video, honestly I didn't know it existed.
And Nissan doesn't say much about maintaining our CVTs other than it's a "maintenance free" transmission. They don't offer any services for this filter, in their eyes it just doesn't exist. My Altima's at 200k+ miles, and I know it's not long for this world, it's just a matter of time before it implodes 😂😭
@@TrickShiftGarage Thank you for your video. You are doing great sustaining CVT life maybe I should have started earlier. I didn't think I needed to be DYI to do the proper maintenance. My son's OEM trans-CVT fluid was changed at 80,000 then at 30,000 miles at Nissan. Still failed at 106,000 miles. Rebuilt cost me $3500 now we have 60,000 with two fluid changes. We are just trying to make it last two more years.
That upper left 10 mm bolt is very very difficult to get access to.
Agreed, a swivel socket is a necessity on that one lol.

There is an O-ring. I would recommend buying one before you start the job.

Yo! Nah, they're just eBay headers, replaced the stock manifold when it got a crack in it... Much cheaper than OEM 😂

You're right I wouldn't use any other oil than oem cvt Nissan but not everyone is willing to pay $23 bucks per quart at the dealership
