    Honestly, social media is also just a place where everyone can say what they want without having to be rational. Good way of responding to that, Laurens. Lets hope it will stay a bit humane and the toxic people in the f1 socials stay far away from the endurance world. 🙏🏻😔

    cars like the foxtail manta and the dacia is what helps make the N24 so special, sure your GT3's and factory drivers are great, take away slower cars then it loses something, there was a reason to why those two cars are/were fan favourites, look forward to seeing/hearing whatever you and guests come up over the course of Le Mans

    Laurens, for your point @ 9:40 , I agree with you. Maybe they should look into having a rolling double yellow around intervention/towtruck/ambulances? I believe currently it's just a single yellow without a speedlimit like you say. Might be that the speed limit that would come with the double yellow would make it more safe.
    Obviously on the other point it's extremely hard for me to form an accurate opinion since I'm not one of the people out there actually driving the cars, but to me it sounds like the bigger issue is people not being consistent in their lines? Obviously I understand that large speed difference make it harder and more dangerous for everything, but I wonder if maybe things would go better if there were penalties for unexpected/dangerous moves?

    I think one of the reasons why Motorsport is drawing in more crowds is the (quality) content you can find these days. Visor cams, “simulator” games, technical insights and even podcasts like this, it all helps to feel much closer to the action as a fan than it used to be. 20 years ago you were lucky if you could watch all F1 races and the LM 24h (on Eurosport) maybe some Indy and NASCAR in the US.

    The 24h of Nurburgring got a special charm. Because of the track, atmosphere and the mortale AM drivers who are able to drive in the same competition as the pro's with the GT3's, cup cars and GT4's. But I agree that the speed difference is to high and very dangerous. You can wait for an accident like with the Dacia, is it not this year than it will be next year. Would it be an idea that the whole field needs to be within 120 -125% of the best qualitime of the year before. The Dacia was this year 143% off the pole time. With 125% they need a minimum laptime of 10:11.25 wich would include the top 112 positions from this year qualifing. Then there is still room for the AM drivers and the lower performance car classes, but less risk and probably crashes.

      Your suggestion is interesting, well reasoned and thought out.
      But i think, this topic, and its underlying problem is too complex to generally say, that the slowest cars need to be excluded from this event. So i don't have a good solution or suggestion to fix this problem, since i'm merely a "virtual racer".
      Therefore, i'd say that drivers, as well as pros and amateurs, are only humans, both of them will make mistakes. I guarantee that these kinds of accidents will happen again, no matter if the cars are within 140% or 120% of the pole time. By that, i mean Maro Engels accident with a slower car, as well as the Porsches crash with the Logan.
      I guess the question for me is; Would this discussion still be around if the Porsche didn't crash into the Logan, but rather into a slow GT3 with a flat tire instead?

    • @jvds_btg
      @jvds_btg ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jonathanschungel5219 Probably we wouldn't talk about it now if it where two GT3's that crashed (like last year in Tiergarden with a certain Porsche and Audi). But history learns us that first there must be a big accident, before the ''problem'' gets the needed attention.
      Crashes and accidents will always be part of racing, but cars like the Dacia logan don't fit in this race in my opinion.

    • @MotorVidz
      @MotorVidz ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Or just restrict the gt3s a tiny bit. To compensate fill the grid with more am teams/slower cars.

    • @jonathanschungel5219
      @jonathanschungel5219 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@jvds_btg Personally, i don't think that there is a problem in general. The Logan competed multiple times before without a major accident, and other slower cars competed for a long time alongside GT3s and GT4s as well without any major accidents. Yes they do come together, but that's part of multi class racing. If there is anything to change, it would probably be the DMSB which has to make sure that drivers are correctly trained for competing at the NBR 24h.
      I personally think that the Logan, as well as the Manta, have just the same right as a GT3 to take part at this race. All these classes are part of the DMSB and everyone who is able to take part can do so. This is what makes this event much more special than 24h of Spa and LeMans imo.
      As a motorsport enthusiast, the Logan lets me personally dream of taking part in this race aswell. I don't have the money to build up a GT3 Team, or buy myself a M4 CSL, or whatever. But with the Logans, the Astras, Mantas, and E36s this dream doesn't seem to be as far away, as it kind of symbolises the accessibility to this event.

    Sounds like a virtual safety car type system needs to be introduced. A big accident with recovery vehicles would bring so much pressure from both inside and outside motorsport that could even result in calls to ban the race. Safety steps to prevent this need to be made, to prevent tragedy for people and for the sport.

    I could not agree more. After the big Nissan crash, everything was done to keep racing at the Nordschleife. For me they are now playing a dangerous game. The gap from fastes to slowest car should not be 3 minutes. Watching the first rounds of NLS and the 24h, I sat at the track during night practice and said "that dacia will go in a big bang. somebody will hit it hard from behind." With this speed, everything happens in a split second and if something changes you dont have the time to stop the car.
    The fanbase at the track is also a thing. But thats though all of motorsport. In the past years it has become such a battlefield between fanboys of cars/drivers and people that try to see it without any fan background.
    I really hope the team of the Dacia builds a differnt car, as they said they will be back fopr the next race. I want to see smal teams, but not while risking the future of the race and maybe lifes.

  • @charliecooper007

    Racing in same race in the only MINI - I couldn’t agree more on the service vehicles and ambulances, the rules need to change as it’s far too dangerous with just a single waved yellow.
    I don’t think it’s the fault of amateurs/semi-professionals vs professionals in the race but the rules. All drivers not only have to complete a course but also a number of NLS races (new rules this year). Also I think all cars should be fitted with limiter (ours wasn’t) and it’s so hard to keep an eye on speed whilst avoiding danger, especially after already receiving one fine for speeding

    For the yellow flags, maybe it should be a strict 120kph for single yellow, 90kph for double yellow and the existing 60kph for Code 60 - as with the tourist laps, slower cars should be made to move to the right and stay there when a faster car goes through to avoid zigzag incidents, *including for intervention vehicles* .
    I commented this on the full race broadcast, but the N24 and NLS also need a 133% rule in qualifying to maintain amateur competition on a safe level - which _is_ possible as all cars bar the Dacia, which was a general liability regardless of who was at fault in this weekends' incident, successfully beat this limit using aggregate times from all 3 qualifying sessions (the 2nd-slowest was a V4-class BMW 325i which was 4secs clear).

    • @Maenfy
      @Maenfy ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue with a fixed speed limit with a single yellow would be that it can be impossible to react. A yellow flag is the first warning usually for double yellows or Code 60s, if there is a yellow around a corner and the driver is going 270 there is no way to react to that in time.
      Why even introduce the 133% rule then when only one car would be effected that won't race anymore anyways?

    • @guyincognito8019
      @guyincognito8019 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Maenfy All modern racecars from F1/F2/F3 to GT3 to V8 Supercars have a form of digital flag system in the car; I'm fairly sure the production cars at the 'Ring also have that system, but if they currently don't then the DMSB can make it mandatory - and if there were, say, a warning noise the sector before the single yellow, with such a system there would be no excuse.
      The 133% is both a deterrent and a kick up the bum - I'm sure there have been teams inspired by the Dacia to potentially come up with their own programs, so this is a way of warning off the complete hobbyists whilst also encouraging amateurs to keep their focus given the small gap in 'Ring terms between said 325i and the cut-off.

    • @Maenfy
      @Maenfy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guyincognito8019 The Nürburgring doesn't have those digital flags yet. On one side it's a bit hard to get those for 135 cars + it would obviously cost a bit which could be an issue especially for the smaller teams. There also is the connection issue on the Nordschleife, they are currently working on it but it might still take 2 or 3 years until there is a signal all around the track.
      I doubt the DMSB would even allow another car that is as slow as the Dacia. They initially didn't want it to race but it became a fan favorite car quickly so they let them race anyway.

    • @guyincognito8019
      @guyincognito8019 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Maenfy I'm not talking about light panels - the system in the car works through timing and scoring on a sector-by-sector or post-by-post basis dependant on the series; I used the V8SC example before, none of their tracks have light panels. I also doubt that the in-car light system is that much more expensive than the Lumirank that teams have to get for the N24 anyway.

    • @Maenfy
      @Maenfy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guyincognito8019 Yes I know that you are talking about the in car system, that still won't work when the car isn't connected to the flag system though. The Nürb has 7 sectors for 25 km, most flag signals aren't used for a whole sector though so that won't work.
      Yeah but the low budget teams are already stretched thin so I doubt they want to add even more costs to them.

  • @Mucus1972
    @Mucus1972 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great podcast style video, top work. With the caveat that opinions are like arse holes and everyone has one, I have 2 thoughts. Back in the day in F1 they had a 107% qualifying rule. Something like that would help make the race safer. Just pick a better %, like within 150% of P1. I'm not bothered about a Dacia Logan being a fan favourite. It's simply frighteningly dangerous re speed differential. Then on the Pro vs Am comment, I'd like the whole grid to be Pro and Am in every car. May make it more interesting in the spirit of endurance adventure.

    In regards to the safety vehicles I think temporary sector safety cars to prevent overtaking of course/recovery trucks until safe areas could help a bit, instead of just waving a flag and warning you with a car that can't enforce anything. Also some digital flagging like at Le Mans would be a blessing, much easier to see those big lit boards

    Is it just my feeling or was it better when there were like 50 cars more on track before covid? Maybe the GT3s did get up to speed less because of more traffic and that resulted in less speed difference?
    Im a fan of the dacia too but things like this can happen in such a diverse field of cars and they are not the first „small“ team this happens to. I‘ve been live at the race since 2018 and i recall this year was the first year since then, that the opel manta didnt get hit by a faster car and had to be repaired. I think with the difference in speed the dacia is just lucky to have done the race 2 times without getting hit.
    On the topic of towtrucks and ambulances i 100% agree. Nobody wants do see a racecar crash into them and in the political environment in germany something like that could be the death of the race that we love.

      Imo the best thing would be restricting the top cars (Porsche Cup, GT3 etc) in speed so the whole race may get a bit slower but who would really care for that if the environment got safer and the general vibe of the race (amateurs and pros competing together, any car can be on the track) would be unchanged

    The Zakspeed Vipers were doing laps just under 9 minutes when they raced. Now GT4 does sub 9 minutes and TCR isn't far off of 9. Yeah, the track's a bit quicker now but probably 10-15 seconds quicker, not 50 seconds. The rest is down to aero and tire development.
    GT3s are just too fast now. 992 cup cars are probably too fast. The spectacle of GT3 at the ring is great but the downforce war in the class has made it untenable here even after being BOP'd into oblivion. I'd rather keep the slower, less expensive cars so that amateurs can actually afford to race than let the pros in GT3s run everyone out of town and eventually kill it off completely.

    I kept saying it that it’s very dangerous to have such speed differences but the people in chats and social media just tell me “you don’t get the event”. Maybe they’re right.
    It upsets me how the retirement rate in GT3 endurance races (spa 24 & Nurburgring) in particular is quite high. It seems like as soon as a car has a problem or what seems like small damage it gets retired rather than repair and carry on. I can understand because of costs but what happened to the spirit of endurance?
