  • “What do your carry that allows you to fix all these bikes?”
This is the question one of our wonderful Pareon supporters asks after seeing me repair several bikes on YT channel. In this video I try to show you everything that I carry and the approach that I take to on the trail repairs. Hint; a little preparation goes a long way.
Join Mira and John as they dogpack the Americas. Summer 2020 they rode the GDMBR, The Oregon Timber Trail, Orogenisis, Wild West route, Baja Divide, Trans Mexico_Norte and many others.
This year we are riding south to towards the tip of South America. Currently we are In Southern Mexico near Oaxaca
    Special guests:
    ❖Welcome to OMNITIERRA ❖
Mira (dog) and John (human) are bikepacking around the world. Together we are Dogpacking to all 7 continents (6 for Mira). Here you will find videos about bikepacking to familiar and remote parts of the globe, people and places, How to's and just being a dog.
This is a new channel and we are learning how to tell our stories about the world we see. If you have an idea for something you would like to see here let me know in the comments.🙏

Virtual high 5 John - whenever I happen upon a bicycle rider with some kind of a mechanical and who is stuck at the side of the road, I always pull over to help and - like yourself - I have a well sorted kit that can always face up to the challenge. The last time was back around new year and the guy was ready to call out a taxi to pick him up and get him home. His problem was a broken chain and slightly bent derailleur and five minutes later he was back on the road with a sorted out mech and a chain fixed up with 2 sets of magic links and 3 hours later he got back home no problems along the way and - and later on that day I got a Wiggle gift card dropped into my inbox, which was a welcome suprise and useful because I needed a new helmet.
It always pays to help fellow travellers on the road - even those in tin boxes.

    John,
Great video - one item I would add “Mister Bill’s” tweezer (very small and light) for pulling out radial tire wires - one of the most common slow leak causes.

Everybody should carry a decent tool kit even on a day ride. Gorilla tape comes in very handy. I carry a small adjustable monkey wrench.

    • @OmniTierra
      @OmniTierra  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The simple answer is @pinion and @gatescarbondrive are great pieces of kit. The downside is that it works so well I have to make an effort to look over my bike more often. With a regular derailleur you are always doing some service.

Really great stuff John and Mira and I totally agree with the last statement at the end of the video of no panicking and keeping the bike in top shape and specially making sure to not put yourself in a situation where it can compromise your rig, equipment or yourself...I once toured with a guy in Utah and we were coming down Alta mountain into Salt Lake and he was going way too fast and hit some gravel and a crack on the road and went down and broke his collarbone, dislocated his hip and tore his skin up really bad and the bike was pretty tore up...I was glad that we were around civilization because if it was in the middle of nowhere, that would had been really bad. I also like that you are touring in sandals...that is the way I roll. Cheers and great stuff.

    Hello John and Mira,
Thank you for sharing these advise.
And the most important is to be careful and don't put yourself on a dangerous situation. Many times it's easy to fix a bike but not so easy to treat injuries.
    Have a good trip

Great stuff to carry. I will add some of those items to my repair kit. I would add some tough thread and a heavy needle. Can come in handy to repair a sliced side wall or some other largish gash. Thanks for sharing. Like to see your posts. Hopefully El Duzer will join you some time in the future as you head south. 🙂

    • @OmniTierra

Pretty sure I showed it but there is Kevlar thread in a curved needle kit for sidewalk repairs. Dental floss works very well also.

This is great content. I just went back through my tour bike kit and took out the mothership multi tool that had some many bits that were not on the bike. Then focused on few loose wrenches to get into some odd places unique to that bike. It is in the preparation as you say. Another viewer fascinated with two liter pop bottle high volume blaster to set a tubeless tire! So good to see new uploads from you. Looking forward to more.

    Thanks for the update John!
I remember when you rode the Blackborow, you carried a DIY tubeless tire inflator made from a 2L coke bottle. Are you still carrying that, and if not, do you carry something else for emergency tubeless seating?
Also, have you reached out to Stompump to give them feedback regarding why their pump failed in the field?
    ¡Buen viaje!

In one video long ago, with Ryan, I think you inflated a tubeless tire by building up pressure in a bottle first. I never saw how you did it. Or was I just imagining that?

I’ll definitely be referring to this frequently before I go on my coast to coast tour. I’m saving up for a Tout Terrain with belt drive after my US trip on a Kona Sutra I received the first week of the pandemic shutdown . That wasn’t very encouraging but things are looking up now. 👍☮️🌞🚴🦮🐾❤️🌵🌲🏕🗺
