  • This video is a bit of an experiment. It was shot, edited and uploaded using only my iPhone 12
    I hope you enjoy this quick look at some of the changes made from the set-up used with the Salsa Blackborow. This bike will definitely evolve as we ride the globe.
    Shot on the iPhone 12 while on a break outside of Alpine California. Edit was done in 40min using iMovie on the same iPhone 🤓
    Join Mira and John as they dogpack the Americas. Last summer they rode the GDMBR, The Oregon Timber Trail, Orogenisis, Wild West route, Baja Divide, Trans Mexico_Norte and many others.
    This year as the borders open they are riding south to towards the tip of South America.
    Special guests:
    ❖Welcome to OMNITIERRA ❖
    Mira (dog) and John (human) are bikepacking around the world. Together we are Dogpacking to all 7 continents (6 for Mira). Here you will find videos about bikepacking to familiar and remote parts of the globe, people and places, How to's and just being a dog.
    This is a new channel and we are learning how to tell our stories about the world we see. If you have an idea for something you would like to see here let me know in the comments.🙏

      Ian, I think if you ride less kilometres per year it would take longer on the cost side. The useability of the pinion and gates is where it really shines. Very little maintenance and very effective gear changes in all conditions. We’ve only ridden it about 5K km but I’m very happy with it.

    Thanks for sharing all your details. I’m planning to change from my Kona Sutra to a Tout Terrain Silk Road with Rohloff hubs and belt drive. I’ve never heard anyone have bottom bracket problems with the Pinion drive or any belt drive. But it is concerning for long distance touring. My road bikes are 48 cm and my mountain bikes 16” which means the frame triangles are so small I can’t get much of a triangle frame bag in there or a second large water bottle. I’ve decided to use a Bob trailer for all road touring and front/rear panniers for off road. BTW I love 💕 watching Mira travel with you. I had hoped to take my crabby English Springer Spaniel bike touring but he is obstinate and definitely not trainable which means I will have to get someone to foster him when I go coast to coast and later to Sweden, Norway and Finland. I’m riding the Kona on the coast to coast ride because it arrived the first week of the lockdown and hasn’t been anywhere. I’ll get the Silk Road after I do the coast to coast ride and for everything thereafter. Be safe. ⚠️👍☮️🌞🌟🚴‍♀️🐶🏔🏕🐾💕

    I love it! I just came from Ryan's vid!
    I love the use of thin cutting boards - I wish I had thought of that when making my own rear fender hack! Is that what you used for the fender as well?
    I had no idea you could get reconditioned gearboxes - that might be a game changer for me! Gearboxes have long been a dream of mine that seemed out of reach, but that might change it!
    I thought the white frame bag was just to keep it from getting too hot inside in the dessert sun, I love the idea of it changing over time!

    Thanks for the update! nice vlog again. Do you also experience the loud clicks off the Pinion gearbox? I also have the C1, for about 6 months now. Did almost 4000kms, the box works great, but the clicks really worry me...

    • @OmniTierra
      @OmniTierra  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speaking with @pinion.eu this is not a problem. It is just a pawl finding it’s home. What can help is ensuring there is enough free movement in the shift cables ( some wiggle in the grip shift). This has helped me considerably without impacting shifting performance. I have maybe 5000km and mine is smooth.
      Hope this helps
      **I remember having a similar thing with my Rolhoff years ago. It remained noisy in 7th. Pinion is quiet in all gears. Just a difference since they both do a great job

    Love,love,love those gear reviews John. With so many pedaled miles and all terrain experience, you are literally a rolling laboratory of empirical wisdom, and why I look forward to all of your detailed gear reviews. Thanks much. Could you comment on why you ultimately chose the PINION P18 over the ROHLOFF 14(Ryan advised me you also had Rohloff experience. I also follow Alee Denham of CYVLINGABOUT on YT.) and what factors made your choice? Are you using the heavier duty GATES EXP Cogs and Belts over the CXP line? Thanks.Ride safe brother. Happy Trails and give Mira a scratch nehind the ears for me,phil

    • @OmniTierra
      @OmniTierra  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Phil,
      The main reasons I chose @pinion were that it allows simple wheel changes. I will use fatbike wheels for parts of this trip. The feel of the Pinion is nicer IMO. Longer service interval. The Pinion places mass in a more central location. Cost savings since I no longer need to replace BB’s. I wear through a lot of drivetrain comments. 🤑
      Both are excellent options for long distance touring.

    Hi John. I've, as a fellow Canadian and dog lover, have been watching and appreciating your videos for quite awhile now. Most recently I've been watching your ride through Mexico with Ryan Van Duzer and noticed you are now riding a Pinion gear bike with a Wren shock. Is that a new bike, that doesn't look like your old Salsa? If this is a new bike, what brand is it? Note: I share a lot of your concerns regarding component life on regular Shimano an SRAM setups. I am looking at purchasing a Priority 600 of 600x (haven't decided which yet) to avoid a large portion of my bike maintenance concerns/irritations.

    Interesting that the Pinion will pay for itself so quickly. Given the increased gearing range, how do you find the steps with 12 speeds? If starting over, would you consider an 18 speed? Like Scott @ PR I'm still uncertain about the belt - it's pretty easy to run a heavy duty chain with the straight chain line and no tensioner, and they're easy to fix. Mind you, I may change my mind when I return home where there is not a belt setup waiting for me. Also, I find that the metal bottles dent easily and need quite a lot of tightening to stop spillage. Sounds like you're having fun. :)

    • @OmniTierra

      Unless you have an extended bike such as a Salsa Blackborow, I usually recommend a trailer for dogs over 20 pounds. The handling/ balance Have your bike is not helped with I have your dog cantilevered off the back door on the front. There are some lightweight Kygo bikes at work very well but for most people trailers are really the best idea.
      I’ve been impressed by the @farfarertrailers. They’re a little hard for dogs to get in and out of but they affect the handling the least. Of course there are other single wheel trailers on the market

    A little question about: Wheel tires. (I've watched the last two videos on Duzer TV) and I was impressed to see no FLATTIES :)
    How come in a region so filled with thorns, we never saw flatties? Do you use some inside tire protection? Or else?

    • @OmniTierra
      @OmniTierra  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a great question Phillip.
      Both Ryan and I run a tubeless set up which is very common for mountain bikes, less so with road bikes these days. There is no inner tube. There is a latex based sealant that is inside the tire to help seal any small punctures. It also allows you to work with wider tire pressures that can be very helpful in some conditions.

    I apologize for the profusion of comments, but you say here that you have decided that 27.5” tires work best for you. As a fellow dogpacker I am really on the fence between 27.5 and 29”. My dog is a 17lb Havanese. He spends a lot more time on the back of the bike than Mira. We ride mostly mountainous terrain from gravel roads to rough 4 wheeler tracks to singletrack Mtb trails. Do you feel that one is better than the other for this type of riding? It’s a major purchase for me so I am really hoping to get it right. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my comments! It is very appreciated!

    • @OmniTierra
      @OmniTierra  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the main reason that I use 27.5 is to improve the performance of the Dyno hub on the front. The difference between the two sizes is enough that I’m able to charge more with 27.5 then I would if I was riding 29. A 27. 5+ tire is so close to a 29 and a narrower width it really doesn’t matter but with plus size tires on 29 it would make a difference.
      If still uncertain flip a coin 🪙 and don’t look back. Quality wheels and @maxxisbike tires will make it all good 🤘

    Hello, may I ask where you got the fuel stove from . I like that setup. I hope you will do more videos with Ryan too, great thats how I got onto you guys. I live in North New Hampshire, I need to have an ebike custom built to my specifications. I want dual batteries on the front tire and back and then I need a custom trailer built too. Do you know of any custom ebike builders? If you do I would greatly appreciate the info. Border Collies are excellent dogs, very intelligent and learn fast. I will be getting a karelian bear dog. These dogs are amazing, they were breed for hunting dogs in Denmark. They are especially for excellent guards and very good at warding off bears, they don't stop until the bear takes off. They are very clean dogs and when they get wet they don't smell like dog. When you are in bear county you can get a bear fence solar powered. When riding you use a very loud horn, any bear in the area will take off. I see so many people out there have a nice time, but they don' t how to protect themselves against bears. Bear spray is not the greatest idea. I received training from an Alaskan Grizzly bear hunting guide, and they were dead set against bear spray. The problem with bear spray should you miss hitting the bear directly in the face, eyes and nose, now you have created a threat or if you miss all together there is a good chance they bear will attack. A bear flare is the smart idea. This flare burns at 2000 thousand degrees. The smoke is what will ward the bear off. No animal likes fire. I just thought I would try to give some constructive advice. However once I get out there I will have my Karelian bear hound and this wonderful dog will be my protection and maybe a bear fence for camping or a security line that has and explosive charge , which also works quite well. Have a great day............... William

    I'm so sorry, I feel like we may end up copying everything you do. When we saw you dog packing on Duzer's channel we just fell in love with the ideas and soon after got 2 border collies and have been biking with them for about a year now. It's amazing! One problem- we were set on ebikes for quite a long time and only recently decided we are going to have to have non-electric bikes as we plan to live on the road soon, hopefully permanently. Why is that a problem? Welllll I'm sure you know how utterly LIMITED the options are when it comes to the specific needs of a dogpacker. The blackburrow was the most ideal option and it's not available anymore :'( So we hastily bought yuba kombis hoping it would be good enough... but I hate it, unfortunately. I am a huge fan of BIG wheels and tires. I thought I could cope with the skinny little 24" wheels on the kombi but I just can't. I normally ride an electric fat tire mountain bike... but something like that doesn't work for us without at least a mid tail, and being that we prefer and have the same basket you do, a long tail works a lot better. I want to be able to have a good compromise between dog packing and having a bike I really love riding, especially if I'm going to live on it. When I saw you got one custom made and how ideal it looks... now I'm looking into it. 😂 There aren't a lot of us out here doing this so there are so few examples and in my opinion you do it best and in a way that matches the way I like to do things. We are lucky to have you as an example. 🙂

      Honestly, for most people, I recommend a single wheeled trailer. It has a lot of advantages for both the dog and the rider. It certainly opens up the options for which bicycle you choose to ride, which then also means that parts are simpler to acquire, and costs will be lower. The farefarer trailer or the BoB Yak are two different but excellent options.

    It's interesting how most of your weight is up high, whereas the rule of thumb for touring is that weight should be kept as low as possible, for handling and stability. Do you feel anything positive / negative / no change from having the weight up high? (excluding the dog of course when she's on board)
    Personally I have small 20 L panniers that quite high on the front and rear racks, i.e. bottom of the pannier are a few inches above the wheel axle, I travel light (no kitchen sink or power banks or laptops or chairs etc) and I don't feel any negative impact on handling or stability.

    • @OmniTierra
      @OmniTierra  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t ever wanna get too much into the weeds about this topic. But I suppose that’s one of the differences with Bikepacking versus touring.
      Most of my riding occurs on dirt and on some single track. Anything low to the ground would just get caught up. On steep hills pushing a bike becomes annoying because you just keep hitting the bags with your legs if they stick out or are too low. In three dimensions this load may appear high but it’s also very central to the bicycle. That access is may be more important and how high or low it may be.
      Hope that gives you some insight into the choices I’ve made 🤔
