- Bikepacking the mountains of Oaxaca Mexico
An overnight trip in the forest of the Zapotec people. The beauty of the high forest north west of Oaxaca is incredible. Fresh water, perfect campsites and great trails made for fun times. Mira was especially bouncy In the morning .
The plan was to use a larger loop but with a worn out tire it made more sence to ride back to www.casaraab.com/ and install one of the new ones I had with me.
Join Mira and John as they dogpack the Americas. Summer 2020 they rode the GDMBR, The Oregon Timber Trail, Orogenisis, Wild West route, Baja Divide, Trans Mexico_Norte and many others.
This year we are riding south to towards the tip of South America. Currently we are In Southern Mexico near Oaxaca

Yeah the GDMBR is a enjoyable route with some great people along the way. Don’t forget Spain is very close to you and it has some truly amazing Bikepacking possibilities there. We’ve ridden all over the country and it is one of our favourites. Nice and close for you
that's a wonderful setup. i carry the dog on a post office bicycle, but he's older than Mira and couldn't jump up in the basket. I stop and lay the bike on the side, he gets in and I lift him up with the bike.
That’s super sweet 💕. I’m making sure to be gentle with Mira since we have a long way to go on this trip. Trailers can be a good option for older dogs too

Ya she’s a energetic one. The forests around here are pretty special. Such a huge elevation change and mush of the area is protected just north west of the city.
I like the "passenger cam" camera position you used around 24 min mark. Haven't seen a camera placed there too often but I liked it. Mixes it up a bit. I also like the ride path using the birds eye view with the whole area shown like a satellite image with your path highlighted. Lots of cool new things you did with this vid, keep it up!

I really love ❤️ all of your videos! Mira is a star ⭐️. I love cycling and touring but my crabby obstinate Springer Spaniel would never behave with me on a bike 🚴♀️🐾. He’s out of control just walking around. When I go on a long trip he will need a foster family. I’m planning a coast to coast ride across the US but I have to have surgery for a torn rotator cuff. I wasn't quite east enough for the Pyrenees. Ferry'd into Santander and cycled across the northern coast with a bit of the Camino de Santiago thrown in then back to Bilbao. It was epic, but very hilly!!

I used that ever-new stove setup for 6 years it really good only issue while on world tour is cant find any fuel if your in museums countries so changed it out 6 months ago to Optimus Polaris Optifuel - Black Edition game changer i used petrol or gas dont have to change nipples when switching to different fuel just works and easy to clean even while your using it with a magnet ..look into it
Yeah this was just a test down here. I typically use a Primus Omni fuel Ti. I’ll be using that from here on out. While I like alcohol for its quietness the effort trying to source it in the cost aren’t worth it. In the US it’s about 10 times the price of gasoline
@@OmniTierra in Asia the best place i found to get fuel for the acholal stove was at drug store ie chemist rubbing acholal it was only 60c for 500 ml food for thought

I do have a bajillion questions. One is pure curiosity. The ink on the calf of your leg? I can see it is a sun. Can't tell if it is Haida, Tlinget or what. (Back story. I carve mostly Haida style paddles, masks and such. Since I am not First Nation I just gift my my carvings)

That is a Porcelain Rocket - team issue. I’ve been keeping camera gear in there lately. Makes it a bit easier to get batteries changed or set up ride by shots.

John, you are an inspiration. Your journeys are the greatest. Would tell me what tire pump you used in the video? For my bp trips, I just have not found one I like.
I am currently using this one amzn.to/3oWriJJ . I use the high volume without a gauge. It’s a solid little pump and comes with a mounting bracket. Plus it’s easy to service

This one is several years old from Western mountaineering. California company but they’re available widely. But anything rated for close to freezing that is high-quality down will back down to something very similar in size.
Good thing that might’ve been hard to see in the video is that the dry bag I packet into has a one-way valve to let air out but not return back in. I always thought those were a bit of a gimmick but honestly it works great. Way better than those silly compression bags that are always so heavy

Yes it is. amzn.to/3Jx2Jwl I’ve used many different saddles and had tried this before. It’s been great over the last month. It’s been very comfortable surprisingly. I also use a Cane Creek Thudbuster amzn.to/3zBocjc. It help with washboard roads 🤗

Great trip segment. You went through some truly beautiful mountains. I was wondering about your longer belt....any issues? I hope it tracks/works as well as the shorter one on my 600X. I have found that when my belt starts squeaking from the dust, I just dry brush it with a fairly stiff little brush then spray it with silicone spray. It seems that each application lasts a little longer than the last. What are your thoughts? Thanks for sharing.
Is there some great questions. No problem at all with the longer belt. @gatescarbondrive Make a great product that works very well.
I’m glad you found a solution with a Silicone spray but for myself I don’t use that. A little bit of bar soap rubbed on there takes care of the squeak for days. In my experience it works much better than silicone spray.

Love watching your videos. They have a mellow feel. The close relationship with your dog shines through. Can I ask? When do you decide it's time for Mira to don her protective sun goggles? Did you have to have the sun goggles specially made? I'm thinking our Border Collie companion, Manneke, could use a pair.
She wears her @rexspecks if the dust, sun, wind are up. She doesn’t like them when it’s really hot but on big descents she often wears them.

Hey David, yes these days there are several GPS systems that most modern devices connect with. This means that for civilian use it’s totally adequate. Not really sure how wide my bars are. A little narrow by modern mountain bike standards.

Your Karoo 2 beeps more than R2D2 but so does mine 😂
You can turn the beeps off but regardless I’m going to sell it because it’s not the best advice for the kind of riding we do.
I enjoy the features of the K2 for my type of riding. I can see trying to use it in remote areas and off the grid as you do, it may not be the best computer for your needs. If you end up with an Garmin or Wahoo down the road, I’d like to hear what features made you prefer it over the K2.
Thanks for the video! You are in the land of my most favorite coffee. I hope you are drinking some Chiapas/Oaxaca coffee! Have you ever tried the GSI ultralight java drip coffee maker? I got one a few years ago and man, it sure is nice to have good coffee on the trail. Not affiliated with GSI, just like the product.
Hi Elijah, Yes the instant coffee experiment was misguided. I usually go within inversion method because con/drip filters are much more finicky to get good results. At home in Canada I do use a Hario V60. On the trail dealing with a pour over it’s just too much effort to get a consistent quality brew. I’ll be staying away from the instant as long as I can.
@@OmniTierra I know that there are some decent instant coffees out there geared towards the backpacking community, but they tend to be pretty expensive. I go with Medaglia D’oro when I have to go instant. Never tried Nescafé, but I have seen plenty of people in Latin America drinking it. Is it any good? Surprises me in lands with great coffee! I wonder if their own countries coffee is too expensive? Anyway, whatever gets the job done. Haha!

@@OmniTierra Thanks the reason i asked was putting together a second camera a recording vlog setup for my girlfriend and trying to get ideas .. so far she using Iphone pro Max 12 with hohem isteady v2 it tiny and brilliant Gimbal and DJI action camera and Dji mini 3 pro with 47 min combo batteries pack and Ipad mini 6 with Luma fusion for editing and icloud frame .Io and The Helix Dura 2 Tb as backup
