I agree, a very helpful video. At 68 I am an old new art student. I am slowly understanding layering and your video was another "A ha" moment. Understanding the whole process helps me be patient and to take my time. Thank you.
Perfectly timed for me to see a year later, when I'm ready and eager to get started with my new full set of Faber Castel Albrecht Durer Watercolor pencils 120 that will arrive on this coming Monday. I also want to try the techniques shown using my original Derwent Inktense 72 pencils. A dream of mine is to be able to get the new 28 Inktense colors introduced in by Derwent in 2023!
Great video, thank you so much for making it. I just want to add one thing for anyone who is new to watercolor pencils. You can blend dark to light, but it has to be done in a different way than going light to dark (which is what's shown in the video). It works well if you use small strokes side to side and wash off the brush frequently. While this method does make it easier to accidentally bring pigment too far down into the light area, I've found that it also gives you more control over not letting darker pigment bleed into already-wet light areas (which is a common issue that is even present in the video example).
Wonderful video. This is my first time using water colour pencils and the technique you have is just amazing and very skilful. Hopefully I am able to get the most of my new Fabriano water colours. Love your video!
Loved this! so many helpful tips for a beginner! I too am an elder (73) just beginning to explore art. I have tried many mediums but keep coming back to the colored water pencils. Thank you so much.
Such a helpful but simply put tutorial…..this is absolutely the most helpful video that I’ve watched and I have searched and searched for this very thing, for the longest!!! Thank you so, so much!!!!
Especially the part about the hard edges!! Geez….why has everyone not shared these details? You are such a wonderful help, and I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate this!!
I still have my Bryunzeel watercolor pencils I got from my uncle at my hospital bed when I was 12. Never took to the watercoloring side of it, I simply hadn’t thought about them being watercolor pencils and their benefits. Recently I’ve rediscovered them and your video has given me some enthusiasm to use them like this. I am a very light colorist due to my muscle illness and don’t find them very pigmented but maybe I need to layer more so I’ll try that. If I still don’t like them at least I now know which pencils are worth buying. Your succulent is gorgeous btw
Hullo Alice!! I am 46 and just starting to get into different types of Drawing Techniques. Your videos are so simple to understand and follow. Thank you so much for the time you take to reach out to all artists and share your talents!
I have used the Koh-I-Noor brand of watercolor pencils. I thought when I was younger that they were the only brand that made them! I still have a very good collection of them. I have since invested in the Albrecht Durer pencils when doing more fine art that was intended for sale! Wonderful examples Alice you created a new wonderful video!
Gosh, I lift the color off the pencil with a wet brush. I can even create a wash and I can hold 3 or 4 colors in my left hand lifting/mixing different colors. Totally different I guess. The great big advantage is no pencil strokes on the paper. Oh, this is using Derwent AQUAtone woodless pencil that are solid pigment. Love them! Forgot to mention, I can also create a little travel pallet by marking the pencil pigment heavily onto thick paper. Then lift color off of that for quick little sketches. I feel like this tutorial totally skips this other method of using pencils. (which I find best.
Up to this point I've only been using watercolor pencils for super fine details in my watercolor pieces (such as small twigs on trees, individual hairs or eyelashes, etc.) but after watching this I think I'm going to try a whole WC pencil piece. Thank you!! 🙏☺️
I have some of the pencils. I put off doing any painting since surgeries. I just tried wetting the watercolor pencil and can get darker colors that way. I think they are pretty and create a smooth look and softer.
This video was very helpful. I few years ago, I went to a watercolor pencil workshop, but it didn't cover as much as you did in your video. It left me feeling unsure of myself so I didn't pursue it any further. Your video, though, has inspired me to continue on.
OMG. I'm a Newbie to watercolor pencils and I just swatched out 72 new watercolor pencils and I was doing the exact opposite of what your video suggested. From wrong paper, wrong technique, everything was wrong...I wish I had found your video first before struggling for almost 6 freaking hours 🥴🙄 THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this! This was so very helpful and gave thorough instructions on what & what NOT to do for us Newbies 🙏😊❤
I'll be honest. I had no interest in watercolor before, bc by my experience, getting good art tips that properly explain the process are incredible hard. My mom got me a small watercolor pencil set bc she knows I like art, so I decided to watch this video I had absolutely no idea watercolor could be interesting, and you explained everything so well!! Thank you for teaching these techniques and showing them with proper explanation!! I really appreciate what you showed and I'll be sure to put that watercolor pencil set to good use! ❤
So happy to find this. I’m bedbound so wanted to try to pencils. Less fuss and muss on bedtray. The succulent was 🤩 but enjoyed the entire video. I’ll be watching a few times 😊. Thank you. 🙏
Such a well produced and very educational video. Thank you for sharing your creative process and providing a valuable learning opportunity for many artists. Wishing you a truly wonderful day ahead.
Ok. Wow. Although I currently have a migraine, I dragged my butt to my table with the watercolor pencils. I did your technique blending from the light to dark instead of the opposite. You are so right and it looks so good!! I’ve been tempted to pitch the darn things with frustration and disappointment because I wanted to love them. Now I do. Thank you.
I absolutely love that video you made at that time. Definitely helped me understand the basics of how to layer and paint with watercolors (well w/pencils anyway 😊). And I did praise you for it when my work wasn’t coming out the way I want to and was watching it while I was painting. Now this video is in my playlists. So glad you decided to give a more in-depth tutorial to your steps this time around. ❤🤟🏾😎🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰❤
You have a new subscriber Alice. Thanks for sharing and demonstrating so clearly and concisely all the highlights of your message and presentation. Exceptionally well done with just the right emphasis on each aspect of the subject to get started. I'm excited and looking forward to getting really comfortable with all of my water friendly pencils. Namely Albrecht Durer and Inktense. Thanks again!
I remember the original How-to video from 2018! 💐I was still in high school at that time and I appreciate your updated take on the tutorial. I'm also fond of an older tutorial on how to make textures with watercolors, including the plastic wrap and sponge method. Have you discovered new ways to make watercolor texture over the last few years? It would be great to see how you use other materials to make textures now.
I have learnt more in this video than I have learnt in over a year of trying to use water coloured pencils. Thank you! I am now subscribed to your channel. ❤🇨🇦
New to watercolor pencils. This was very helpful. I just ordered some WC pencils and am excited, and a little more prepared to use them. Grateful, from Oregon!
This is a gem of a video, I too started by dipping lol ❤your explanations are so good, I enjoyed watching you sketch and create. Thank you for sharing.😊
I've seen people suggesting the wet on dry method of dipping your pencils. When I tried it, I was like "Oh this is so pretty.... for a few strokes, and then it goes back to being a pencil." I came to this video hoping to find out what I was doing wrong, and it apparently was that whole method!
Everytime i watch yoir videos, they always give the courage to continue drawing bit i am soooooo sad that i have not subscribed but i am going to do it. I love your accent
Thank you so much for this video I wasn’t aware that we can do layer on layer with water color art and the tip about hard line and not working on a leaf that’s right next the other was beautiful
3:46 THIS!!🎉🎉💯 It seems so simple now that you have explained it like this thank you!❤ IDK about anyone else I can only speak for myself but I'm much more able to retain information on any subject when the instructor explains the "WHY" of the actions they're telling us to do. Rather then if the teacher just says do steps a,b,c and you'll get d... I hope that makes sense to you ☺️
Thanks, Alice! I've been looking at a lot of videos about brand recommendations and how to use watercolor pencils and this one is the BEST I've seen. And you packed in so much info in such a short video. Great job!
While the tutorial is great, washing out entirely the pencil strokes seems counter productive (use actual watercolor for that in that case). The real beauty of watercolor pencils is the pencil strokes while you have a bit of wash over them and of course saving you dipping time.
That was very helpful, thank you! Bought a set of 120 watercolour pencils without knowing that this is how they are supposed to be used. So i was just colouring in the normal way like any pencils! Though i did wonder why they weren't blending very well! 😂
Question when you layer does the under layer lift up and reactivate. Ex when you put the light green then added water and let it dry but then you add a dark green on top and use water does that light green reactivate
Question: I am noticing that your Arteza pencils leads do not seem to be in wood like my Faber-Castell. Is that because the whole pencil is pigment? (I hope I explained my question to be understandable ) :)
Yes, this is a woodless pencil. She mentions it at the beginning. I have the Arteza watercolour pencils with wood, and I'm really enjoying them. They're not crazy expensive either. I have a huge set!
Thank you! This is a super helpful tutorial on watercolor pencils. I have the Artesia set and wasn't really inspired by it... I just picked up a 72 set from ARTISTO after watching a review from Lindsay The Frugal Crafter. I find the range of colors really inspiring, and it has renewed my enthusiasm for trying these out. LOL, if I watched your video first, I probably could have saved $20! Still, not sorry. ❤ 😂

Finally, feel like I have a better idea of how to use them properly
You and me both

Have had this saved for awhile! All very helpful but particularly how you can sketch w the pencils then blend with water when you get home. Love it.

I never thought to combine the two. Now I feel foolish lol. But this was worth watching just for your comment….thx

Thanks for teaching techniques and then using them . Appreciate your wisdom 😊

Thank you for sharing this how-to video. I want to try water coloring on my embroidery projects.

Thank you. I enjoyed your informative video on how to use watercolor pencils. I am looking forward to trying it out soon.
You are a great teacher! Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Like it! Question: if blending is the most challenging part, would using a stiffer brush help with that? Thank you!
Thank you! This was super helpful and I'm now excited about trying out the watercolor pencils I recently bought.
Very helpful! I am ordering my first set of watercolor pencils so your tips will come in handy :) Thanks so much!

No lol
Literally the reason I searched for this video 💀💀💀
sorry but I just couldn't help but laugh lol.....nothing personal!!! 😁
No, you are not the only one who doesn't know how to use watercolor pencils. I've been using them all wrong for years. I'm so glad I found this video.
