I truly need to go back to the basics and start SMALL! I often overwhelm myself by thinking of a simple subject and over-thinking and over-detailing it. I have to remind myself that painting say - a petal - can be as helpufl as an entire flower. I think for my self, my biggest downfall is thinking too big. I have been considering some simpler ideas and I just need to go with them and create the habit of creating 'smalls'. Thank you so much for this reminder, Kelly. I just love your book and documentation of your year!
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts Sheila. It is funny how we feel it must be a full painting instead of little bits. When studying layers, I took it slow and simple to understand the process and it taught me so much. I love the petal instead of the flower thinking, it is wonderful!
You are very welcome and I'm thrilled you were inspired by the process! There is a course called Circle of Delight in my video description if you are interested in seeing more details about it.
Thank you for making me smile today, I really appreciate your kind comments! I do offer a course based on this process called Circle of Delight. If you would like to take a peek, you can find the link in the video description.
Kelly, what a wonderful idea, so beautifully done. I am truly inspired to get my paints out again and give them a whirl. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art with us!❤
I'm thrilled you are inspired and so excited about this video getting you painting again YEAH! Thanks for putting a big smile on my face with your comments today!
They really are a delight to paint because they are so quick. Glad you liked them! I do have a course called Circle of Delight if you want to do more design, style and color with me for 31 days. You can find the link in the video description box.
You are so talented! I have never seen anything like this before. The blank page of an art journal terrifies me. This, this is doable! Thank you ever so much for sharing.
I talk more about the inspiration behind it and actually paint a day with you in the first Daily Practice video. I also have a Sketchbook Series playlist that gives you tips about how to conquer the blank page. And, you are very welcome, glad it inspired you!
I love this idea SO MUCH!!! I follow some artists who do compiled pages like this, but when I thought about trying something like it I got overwhelmed. This breaks it down in to manageable pieces. Thank you for sharing!!💖
You are very welcome and I'm so happy you are inspired! I do offer a course based on this process called Circle of Delight. You can find the link in the video description.
I absolutely loved this video! I had been in a class for watercolor for a few years. Covid hit and I could no longer go and afterwards it did not start up again. I am feeling the call and think this is a wonderful way to start. Thank you so much for showing your 5 minutes a day! I will search your channel and see what else you have that will get me going again with my brush!
Yes you have inspired me im sketching small paddington bear my son gave to me at xmas , 2 robins sitting on branch ornament whatever i see in my livingroom. I live in scotland , thank you for gettting me started as i had been stuck in moving forward .
I love this! I decided in 2023 that I would learn watercolour in 2024, using TH-cam videos and I’m yet to start. Your video has inspired me to have a go!
Thank you and watercolor is a great medium to study. I'm so happy you are inspired and I do offer a course based on this process called Circle of Delight. You can find the link in the video description.
What a wonderful idea! Your pages are just beautiful. Did you see a pileated woodpecker? I love your two bunnies in the beginning. Sometimes the simplest things are the most beautiful 🍂
Thank you so much, I really appreciate your kind comments! Yes, we actually saw the pileated woodpecker. We live on wooded property and they make appearances throughout the year. We hear them more than see them though. If you search of "daily painting" I have another video sharing how the process started and the development of the bunnies that I think you might enjoy.
Thank you so much Angela and I'm thrilled you were inspired! I talk a lot more about design and style inside the course Circle of Delight. The link can be found in the video description box.

This is so beautiful! I love this concept, it’s a wonderful book to tell your story. Thank you for sharing. I might try it out, but a much smaller scale… like doing it for the month of March instead of the whole year.
You are very welcome and a month of creative inspiration will be a great art practice. I do offer a course based on this process called Circle of Delight. You can find the link in the video description.
You are very welcome and glad it has inspired you. I do offer a course called Circle of Delight if you want a little more guidance in creating one for yourself. You can find the link in the video description box.
I made my own art paper book and started this project , yes in the middle of March. I have completed a few days and have found such delight in how this looks and how much fun it is to figure out what I will paint to remember each day. You have such great ideas to inspire. So glad I found you. I am enthused about painting again. I share your delight in leaves. They are so amazing. the weirder and more chewed up the better.
This just makes me so happy, thank you for letting me know about your journey so far. I love that you are excited to find something delightful for each day and even happier that you love the weird and tattered leaves. Welcome to the "freak flag club!" LOL
Thank you so much! There is another video before this listed in the video description box that shares more of the process if you want a little more information. Enjoy!
Thank you so much, it was a lot of fun to create in all year long. There is another video on Daily Painting where I share a bit more about the set up that you can search for on my channel if you are interested.
This is magical. It is utterly beautiful! Tomorrow is March 1st; I’m inspired to begin a "Dear Diary" using a new sketchbook I haven’t yet touched. It doesn’t need to be a full page, but maybe half or even a third of the page of what happens in my life. Now because of my age (79 horrors) I don’t go many places, however I have a treasure trove of beautiful things in my home I could attempt to illustrate. That would make a pretty memory book. It needn’t be daily as diaries aren’t always kept on a strict daily basis. Thank you for your beautiful art and for your most unique inspiration.
I love that you are 79 and creating, so beautiful and inspiring - thank you for that! You might want to check out my video from today where I show and talk about day 1-10 of my 100 day project. It is done differently than this circle but sounds like where you are headed in the Dear Diary.
I just love this! I have started little vignettes of each day. I make myself draw or paint everyday too. You are so eclectic and I love this!!!!! I subscribeed today
This is so cool to see and encouraging. I made a resolution this year to do something art related daily. I bought a coloring calendar book with coloring page on left side and weekly page on right side. I would finish a coloring page a week and write down what I did daily (no introspection). So far I am keeping it going. I also copy doodles and simple watercolor I collected on internet. I am no artist but I like line ink and watercolor challenge. It gave me joy when I could reproduce decently.
I absolutely love your reflection in small vignettes from daily 2023 ! I am so inspired by your art, Kelly and look forward every Monday to your chronicles as well.! I really admire your tenacity and joyful essence! I love this 365 x 5-10min. Painting Everyday…. Idea…. 🎉❤
You've got this! The art of practice is so important when learning, growing and creating. Baby steps give you monumental progress, go slow but be consistent. Check out my Sketchbook Series playlist for ideas and to see my progress in watercolor, it has been transformational.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! I do offer a course based on this process called Circle of Delight. You can find the link in the video description.

What a wonderful idea! You are so talented! I loved hearing about your nature collection. I also regularly collect bits of nature - acorns, leaves, feathers, cicadas, pretty stones sit on my desk… Never thought about using them to inspire mini art.
They are the best to use in your art because you can always just head outside and find new and exciting pieces to create and possibly add to your collection. Glad it has inspired you and welcome to In the Studio!
Thank you for subscribing and welcome to In the Studio! I have a lot of playlists on my channel in case you are looking for a specific topic to explore. Enjoy!
Thank you so much and I'm happy you were inspired! If you want to create one with me, my course Circle of Delight is listed in the video description box.
Wow! I have never seen your channel before, and I love your art! You have definitely gained a new subscriber. I didn't want you to flip the page in your sketchbook as you were showing it because I wanted time to study every illustration. And by the way, as someone who fell in love with art as a child from a few pages in a Richard Scarry children's book, I love that sketchbook with the vintage children's book cover, and it disappoints me that I can not buy one. As an adult my husband and I sold antiques for many years, and I collected children's book because I love the vintage children's illustrations. Your artwork in this sketchbook reminds me of the illustrations and art in vintage children's books.
Thank you for subscribing and welcome to In the Studio! Your kind comments have warmed my heart because I have been really trying to be more illustrative in my art work the past year. There are a lot of tutorials here on TH-cam for making a sketchbook using an old book, you might be inspired to make one for yourself. So jealous of all the beautiful books you must have and I know the covers have to be spectacular!
Wow! Talk about inspiring! I am already pondering which of my unused journals to drag out and start this whole idea! Since Chinese new year just passed I may use that for a start date! Thank you for this. Going down the rabbit hole of your other videos AFTER I go play in studio. 😂😂 subscribed!!!
Thank you for subscribing and welcome to In the Studio! I have a lot of playlists to keep you busy, enjoy. I do offer a course based on this process called Circle of Delight. You can find the link in the video description.
I'm so happy that you are inspired to give this a try for March. I do offer a course, Circle of Delight, if you want more about design, style and color. You can find the link in the video description box.
Thank you and welcome to In the Studio! If you would like to create one of these with me, my course Circle of Delight, can be found on the Teachable link.
Thank you for this inspiring practice and showing us your beautiful 2023 collection! I love that you simplified the images you wanted to create. I need to do that too. Many thanks!!!❤
Thank you for subscribing and welcome to In the Studio! I love that this inspired you wanting to create. To see more, I have a course, Circle of Delight, that teaches you design, style and creating one of these on your own. Link is in the video description box.
@kellyhoernig It was very inspiring and your loose style was a pure delight. I also enjoyed your commentary and level of enthusiasm. Sometimes if someone is over the top cheery, it can be quite challenging continuing to watch. Great Job Kelly!!
You are very welcome and I'm thrilled you were inspired! If you want to learn more, my course Circle of Delight's link can be found in the video description box.
Omg, I adore your revolving box of nature!!! I live in inner London and one can feel cut off from nature but it is there and a little revolving box is a wonderful way of bringing nature into ones art, and such things are great for ideas for mark making. Thank you! I'm gonna pinch that great idea!! Thanks for your video, new subbie!!
I'm so happy you loved that idea and that is exactly why I shared because it is such a great way to find inspiration at your fingertips! Thank you for subscribing and welcome to In the Studio.
I’m so excited to have found you again. I have searched for your video because I wanted to do a watercolor sketch a day in this fashion.I I thought you had vanished! I love your sketchbook journal. I will save your videos in a special playlist from now on. ❤

They are the best to use in your art because you can always just head outside and find new and exciting pieces to create and possibly add to your collection. Glad it has inspired you and welcome to In the Studio!
@@kellyhoernig Thank you!!😃😃

Thank you so much and what a gift to be able to make these beautiful sketchbooks, wow!

@kellyhoernig It was very inspiring and your loose style was a pure delight. I also enjoyed your commentary and level of enthusiasm. Sometimes if someone is over the top cheery, it can be quite challenging continuing to watch. Great Job Kelly!!

One Of A Kind
Omg, I adore your revolving box of nature!!! I live in inner London and one can feel cut off from nature but it is there and a little revolving box is a wonderful way of bringing nature into ones art, and such things are great for ideas for mark making. Thank you! I'm gonna pinch that great idea!! Thanks for your video, new subbie!!
I'm so happy you loved that idea and that is exactly why I shared because it is such a great way to find inspiration at your fingertips! Thank you for subscribing and welcome to In the Studio.
