I can’t believe how much my drawing has improved since I started these exercises! Yesterday I drew a few cats, and they kept improving! I Well, they actually started to look like the reference photos. I started to draw the profile of a fox at about 2am. Forgot all about the time. The fox is beautiful! I can’t believe i drew it, and neither can my hubby. I used HB 2 Pencil and that fox looks real! His eyes look real! Tonight as I watched and finished the exercise and paused the video on your face, and started drawing you. I can’t believe how much that drawing looks like you! I paint in watercolor and this is going to help me immensely! I can’t thank you enough!I am learning to draw like this at age 70. Right now I feel like I could do anything!
Hello from Russia! I think it's a really wonderful coincidence that you start sharing your tuts right now. First i have met your channel a couple of days ago and was very excited to watch it. Unfortunately, as we all know, being in Russia right now is a little bit tricky if you want to buy something abroad, because you just can't use your card to buy almost anything from the border. So, your free course is just a real gift for me. Thank you Danny!❤
I was struggling with anxiety and stress. And luckily I’ve found your channel, only by listening to your videos while I’m working or resting (instead of infinite scrolling on social media) makes me feel way better! And I’ve started journaling and sketching on a daily basis. It’s been really helpful. I can’t believe it. Already subscribed to the channel and your newsletter! Thanks :)
I love your teaching style, this series, this channel, and your voice. I also really enjoy hearing other's stories in the comments. What a lovely community you have here! Thank you, Danny! 💛
As a kid my drawing books said "NEVER draw the outside lines". The books had me drawing people as stick figures, then pipes then guide lines then detail. There was so much erasing it was a mess. Sadly I still have all those rules in my brain. I'm super excited for your lessons! I needed this 😊
I believe i was born with a pencil and paper in my hand. I've never had formal training. About six months ago, I started to wonder how much better I might draw with a little training. I'm so happy to have found your channel. Im so excited!!
Hi Mr. Gregory, I love to see your videos. You have such a beautiful way of explaining, I can understand everything you say. If you know anything about acrylic painting which I am sure you know, please make videos for that too. I love these drawing exercises and I am already doing so much better than before. Thank you
I cannot believe this, I was looking at those keys like "no way I can draw that detailed mess" but in the end I managed to make a drawing that's actually really good, entirely effortless and on my own while just listening to your instructions. I have ALWAYS struggled with proportions but this just did it for me, thank you so much!
Could not believe this straightforward concept would change how I look at sketching. Suddenly it made sense to me. As I tried to sketch what i saw, I expected the perspectives to be off...but somehow this idea pulled it altogether for me. Ok....the perspectives are still off...no problem tho. I had a place to start and a goal to follow. Just fill in the other shapes! Now I know how to start a drawing. Weirdly...that was missing before??!! Chuckle. I think my morning coffee cup will become the muse for awhile! ....maybe sticking to the same cup would be good. TY!! I really needed this video! I'm using a pen! Aaaaaack!
This was great and really appreciate how you broke down the process at the end when you talked about not wanting our drawings to look like a photo and learning to draw what we see and translating that to the page. Thanks!
So, I’m now on video 3 and you’re on my tv lol. Well I have never seen contour drawing before. What a laugh. I drew sets of keys outline and neither matched lol. I’m gonna take a break and do something else. This is great I’m loving it. 😊
This course is amazing! I can’t believe how easy your explanations are and your voice is so soothing… I’m extremely anxious today as I’m taking a flight and I hate flying but I’ll take a notebook and pen with me and just draw!
Thank you for this series of lessons! Very helpful and encouraging. You have a calm and easy way of teaching that makes us feel we can relax, drawing even with a pen.😅
Thank you, as a person whose are teacher told them they couldn't draw, it turns out I can. Your lessons are fun, managesble and my results are successfu. 🎉
Danny, thank you so much for your videos. After this one I did a drawing I would previously not had the courage to do and I am blown away by the result. I have the confidence to keep going now. You are a great teacher !
Really loving this series, Ive been drawing alongside it everyday. I've been waiting for a teacher that i felt delivered the lessons that were actionable and that I needed to hear at the right time. So thanks!
I really like these videos! Ive tried to teach myself how to draw a few times before with other TH-cam Videos, but I always found myself extremely bored with the practices. But you've made practicing fun and educational! My keys have a bunch of charms and stuff on them, so I know itll be a challenge, but its a fun challenge!
I am enjoying this course- I am finding that I always seem to take ages to find 'just the right' objects to draw, instead of just going 'ok heres some things with shapes I can observe and draw', I think its probably to do with fear of failure or of making mistakes? Giving myself the best chance of 'success' Has this ever happened to you ? 😊
Happens to me all the time! We just gotta do anything! It’s better than nothing! view it in stages 1. Find reference 2. Start drawing if this is the next day, oh well. Then maybe just the outline, etc. good luck! I’m just starting!
I'm excited for this course and what I've already learned. I have a friend who has learned, by practicing, to draw contour drawings and fill them in with watercolor. She does this for her many travels and has inspired me to want to learn too. So I found you on TH-cam last night. This morning I watched CBS Sunday Morning's tribute to the late Charles Osgood, and now I realize that you remind me a lot of him. You kinda look like him (minus his famous bowtie), but you speak very warmly like he always did as well. Thanks so much for what you do and I'm happy to be a new subscriber!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Never knew how to draw by the Outside contour first then the inside contour. Just love your lessons. Now I will draw my own Car keys.
Slapped my keys next to me, started drawing, thinking it will be awful, but in the end, I was AMAZED on how similar I got them to look. I have a lot of keys too.
I starting watching . Thx. Watched 1st 3... should we focus on 1 lesson to a proficiency or.. do a little of each w/out "mastering" the previous lesson?
Work your way through each lesson and get used to the new approach. They build on each other but they are techniques that will be the foundation of your drawing habit.
I had a very hard time with contour drawing when I took art, never really understood it. But, I really did enjoy drawing negative space and my drawings looked the same as contours (at least my prof never noticed). LOL!
Thank you for the great content. Used to be into drawing and getting into it again and your positive and encouraging helps a lot. I noticed you suggested using a single slow tracing technique when it comes to contour drawing and drawing blind (rather than the multiple fast sketchy mark that I tend to do by default). Would you suggest this slow tracing line in general whenever I try to draw contours and or/realistically? Thanks again for your content!
Hey there! How does this compare to your courses on Sketchbook Skool (How to Draw Without Talent and Seeing Like an Artist)? This is great! But I also want more depth and content at a faster pace! Where would you recommend I go?
I'll have to practice this A LOT. I'm also working on a Sketchbook Skool course (the bonus lesson Dogs) and I find it really hard to end at my starting point 😂 My 'dogs' just don't look like our Welsh terrier 🤭 I'll kust keep on going - we have a lot of keys and little random things I can draw haha
Yeah, sure. If you at the beginning of your master degree on Art in the University Art class. At this point I've tried quite a lot of "the beginner" tutorials, and they are all the same. They allways asume you are already good at drawing and you only need to "practice more" to get from "the good" to "the better". But if you can't draw at all, you want learn it. At least I don't, even putting a lot of time and effort and practice.
let it be known this is as far as i went, drawing proved impossible for me. good luck ladies and gentlemen✌ edit: just gave myself a pep talk, i am back
Well, but how do you know what the shape is? How do you know where to draw a line to make this shape? I've allready tried to draw your keys several times and I failed every single time! Instead of shape of the keys I've got just a mess. And when I've tried to draw the inside shapes I couldn't do it, because they didn't fit at all into this messed up outside shape. What am I doing wrong?
Hello, thank you for your videos, they really inspired me. I've now started picking up a pen to draw what I see with my eyes, it's so much fun. But,here comes a question. It's hard for me to control the size of the object I draw on the paper. I either draw too large, exceeding the paper, or too small, missing out on details. I'd like to know when drawing with outlines, drawing with contours, (If I don't sketch with a pencil beforehand to establish the overall placement)How can I ensure that I don't draw too large or too small?😢
I've just watched this video and wondered the same thing, having been trained to sketch the composition lightly first. But Danny has a charming, wonky style and embracing the journey is the secret sauce. If you wander off the page because it's too big, just take another swing at it right there, leaving the record of your first go-round.
Well, the fobs came out ok, the keys not so much. So I challenged myself and drew my husband's laptop. It looks like a laptop. Simpler I know but I think I'm getting the proportions down. Thanks!!
XD haha somehow i didnt end where i started. It looked so good at the beginning but in the end inrealized that somwhere onduring my drawing i wasent going down enough so this bkack thingy was half way into the car thingy
Sir, I have been drawing really since I was about three years old, and I'm about to turn fifty. I draw the things that I like to draw for myself, and sometimes as gifts. Drawing is not what this comment is about. I just want to thank you for just being somewhat kind within your words. It doesn't seem like you're about to slam me with an insult, slurs, or anything like that, I have seen your videos before, but I don't know really what you're videos are about underneath it all...,but thank you for your kind words sir. Thank you.

you have found one of the best. Especially when it comes to a joy embracing attitude towards drawing. Much needed.
I’m so glad for you! I can’t afford anything, and am so blessed by these videos!
Wishing you can someday be somewhere you can like a freer life.

This guy is so nice. He's so calm and supportive and he reminds me of my dad.
Forget pinning down what something is; just observe it, just observe its lines. Love that.
I love your teaching style, this series, this channel, and your voice. I also really enjoy hearing other's stories in the comments. What a lovely community you have here! Thank you, Danny! 💛

Mr. Gregory, I love your videos so much. Contour drawing is so cool! Thanks for this video.
Hello Danny ! I like your teaching on how to draw .I am a beginner and I'm enjoying the videos as I go along.
Wonderful! Glad I could help!
@@SketchBookSkool I just showed my boyfriend he is also amazed haha! You are a great teacher and motivator!
I just started to follow your lessons it’s very fun and captivating.

That was fascinating, watching you draw the set of keys. Gonna try that now!
Go for it!
Thanks a lot Danny! These lessons are so timely for me. My sketch book pages are filling up fast!!
Great to hear!
Wow. Love your approach😢. I'm 71 a life long frustrated Artist.ive resolved to learn. ThNk you.
This was great and really appreciate how you broke down the process at the end when you talked about not wanting our drawings to look like a photo and learning to draw what we see and translating that to the page. Thanks!
I like your easy going, no threat, teaching manner.

Thank you for this series of lessons! Very helpful and encouraging. You have a calm and easy way of teaching that makes us feel we can relax, drawing even with a pen.😅
Glad you like them!
Thank you, as a person whose are teacher told them they couldn't draw, it turns out I can. Your lessons are fun, managesble and my results are successfu. 🎉
Glad I could help!
After I watched contour drawings 2,I tried it and I liked the outcome even though I made mistakes.
Thanks so much for breaking this down for us. I shall try this. 💐🙏🏽💞🎄
Danny, thank you so much for your videos. After this one I did a drawing I would previously not had the courage to do and I am blown away by the result. I have the confidence to keep going now. You are a great teacher !

That's interesting how you drew it with thick and thin marker .I'm gonna use this technique

Lofing these tutorials. So much fun. 😊

Fortunately, I'm still alive.
You sure picked a tricky one lol! I will give it a go though
You can do it!
That was fun! Thank you for your guidance!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Never knew how to draw by the Outside contour first then the inside contour.
Just love your lessons.
Now I will draw my own Car keys.
Thank you so much for these videos. I love the way you explain your process and demonstrate drawing at the same time.
My pleasure!!

You’ve found the key(s)!
Thank you so much for this video. This "contour drawing" thingy is awesome and I'm in love with it.
I’m so glad. More to come.
Thank you Danny, I have definitely seen major improvement in my drawings!
Great to hear!
Wow 🤩 it is a skill I’ve never learned, and it helps me a lot. Thank you.
This is wonderful to be lead by steps. I was stymied because I didn’t have a clue. Thanks.
So THAT'S what contour drawing is!
Thanks Danny for sharing your experience sooooo grateful 😊
LOVE IT!! Enjoying Sketchbook Skool!!
This is great
Thank you for the great information and inspiration 👍👍
Thank you, Danny. I am looking forward to the next lesson! ❤
More to come!

Thank you, greetings from Vienna / Austria
I did this but mine was terrible, but I am willing to practice more, I hope I will get to somewhere.
Very good clear way of teaching thankyou 😊
That was really nice

I definitely recommend you draw slowly and confidently rather than shaggy sketchy lines. Your line is a record of how you are observing.
this video is magical!! thank you soooo much
You're so welcome!
Hey there! How does this compare to your courses on Sketchbook Skool (How to Draw Without Talent and Seeing Like an Artist)? This is great! But I also want more depth and content at a faster pace! Where would you recommend I go?
Definitely sign up for How to draw without talent. It’s faster paced.

Keep it up!
Glad you came back! I’m just starting!
That's the way to do it
Glad you’re back. Drawing/art is supposed to be fun. Don’t stress about how it looks, just have fun.
😂
Well, but how do you know what the shape is? How do you know where to draw a line to make this shape? I've allready tried to draw your keys several times and I failed every single time! Keep trying. And avoid it being a chore and a struggle. And draw your own keys rather than my image on the screen.
Hello, thank you for your videos, they really inspired me. I've now started picking up a pen to draw what I see with my eyes, it's so much fun.

This was a great video. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I did my best. Thanks 🙏

Fabulous,thankyou
u remind me of my grandpa, i love you
Embrace the Wonkiness! 😂🎉
I will look for somthing to draw later & see how it turns out.
I drew something!! And it looks like what I am trying to draw!!!!!
Well, the fobs came out ok, the keys not so much. So I challenged myself and drew my husband's laptop. It looks like a laptop. Simpler I know but I think I'm getting the proportions down. Thanks!!
This IS fun!
😊
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Drawing the inside contour looks really hard!
Try it!
Woah I didn't know I could draw that
Also done already 😂
XD haha somehow i didnt end where i started. It looked so good at the beginning but in the end inrealized that somwhere onduring my drawing i wasent going down enough so this bkack thingy was half way into the car thingy
