Installing TYT 9800 HAM radio in Jeep Cherokee XJ

  • This HAM radio is a cheap version of the Yaseu FT-8900. It's actually almost identical. Even the look and menu settings are the same. I actually used the Yaseu owners manual to learn how to use it since it was better written. I go over how I installed it in my Cherokoee and where I placed it.

    The local volunteer rural fire department loves these. I have set up a few of them with frequencies in 31 megacycle range, 47 megacycles, and 152 megacycle ranges. They never had a problem except two of them needed a new external speaker jack. Their handheld units are TYT water resistant unites as well. The radios are advertised with an internal Duplexer. I do not know how it would work of if it even has one. I had to install an MFJ Duplexer behind each transceiver for them to work on the frequencies the fire department needs. The antenna tower needs more than one antenna for all those frequencies and so do the trucks. They are extremely versatile transceivers with many uses. However, I have heard they may not be authorised for certain frequencies they cover. The Canadian Radio and Television Communication Commission enforces those backward laws about as much as the American FCC and United Kingdom OFCOM enforce those backwards laws.

    Hey Joe
    I installed a couple of radio in my 50 years of the hobby. I did my Kenwood TS-480hx and put the radio behind the seat on the back of the cab. But my power wires I came in as you did but ran them under the drivers door jam. to the rear of the cab. I also ran 6 gauge wire because I have a 500 watt HF amp in the rear. But I also have a gel cell battery @700 CCA. So now I have enough power to run the radio and amp at the same time. I used a diode on the inside battery as to not drain my starting battery. And as far as a ext speaker I put that behind my left ear on the cab. Because my wife hates to hear the radio. But I also put a headphone jack for mono on the speaker. I have a 2013 Ram pickup.
    I am interested in this radio because I have no bands except HF. I do however have a 2 meter/70cm mounted in the roof of my truck and never used it... LMAO Let me know how this radio works out for you. Good video and thanks

      Thanks Dave. Wow that's some setup you got there. I'm actually very pleased with this radio. It's features work great but you can tell the physical quality is not up there like an actual Yaseu. The buttons and knobs feel cheaper and the LCD is not as vibrant and clear as an actual Yaseu. But at this price point, its a really nice radio. Thanks for watching and commenting. 73's! K2ROX

      @@Mudslidex1 I think the display could be improved by changing the LED's to amber instead of the off yellow used. I had those in my Kenwood TS-2000 and found that it was also washed out and wasn't as good as the original led's. So I bought some amber and installed them. They are better than the ones that came with the radio. Sometimes brighter is not better.

    Very nice install. I just ordered one and wanted to check in and see other installs. I like the way you done your install. Very clean. You used a 20AMP fuse on the positive side, but I noticed other fuses in the fuse block? Are you running other things off that fuse block as well? sorry I am confused there? Also what size fuse did you use on you negative side? Thanks.

      Thanks. Yes I have a fuse block that I have other things running off of such as auxiliary lights, but I have a 20 amp fuse on the positive side and also a 20 amp on the negative side for the radio. You can see the negative fuse at th-cam.com/video/sSywJZ2uz7A/w-d-xo.html

      I would highly recommend a Comet CF-530c antenna duplexor for your TYT TH-9800 Plus. This will allow you to use one antenna for 26 to 54 Mhz and another antenna for 135 to 512 Mhz.

    • @Mudslidex1
      @Mudslidex1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@indridcold8433 Thanks for the recommendation, I've been wondering which would be a good one to use. I mostly used 2M/440 dual antenna's but it would be nice to be able use the lower frequencies on this radio with another antenna.

      @@Mudslidex1 This radio is also good for use for PEG radio as well. There are no specific radios to use for PEG radio. Given the current planetary unpleasantness, I have been considering getting a PEG radio license to use around 47 Mhz. Take a look into PEG radio. You may appreciate it.

    • @indridcold8433
      @indridcold8433 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mudslidex1 The beauty of the Comet CF-530c is that it can easily be used with other radios and antennas. You will have it years after you may not even have the TYT TH9800 plus. It also works in tandem with an antenna tuner for the lower frequencies. I bought mine used and believed it was going to be problematic because it was so dirty and scratched up. Nope, the thing is amazing. I paired it with the MFJ 939 antenna auto tuner that seemed to be junk as well. The sold the used stuff as if it was junk. $65 for both. They work flawlessly together. I did not even want the antenna tuner but the bargain for both was incredible. Do not hesitate to get the Comet CF-530c. The antenna tuner will be more handy for a real HF radio but if you can get one that low, get it as well.

      Aw, the WJ, the last real Grand Cherokee. Treasure it, cherish it, love it, nurture it and grow it to the impressive multipurpose and offroad machine it is. I envy you. If I only knew what I know now. I had a 2001 WJ and parted with it for a crap 2011 one with independent suspension. It got stuck, half the times, where the WJ just idled through the obstacle. It had very little ground clearance. Suspension parts broke with great ease. Today, I can not find a WJ somewhat close that has not been nearly destroyed from a combination of abuse, neglect and age. I had my 2001 WJ from 2008 to 2012. You will hate me for selling it. When I sold her she had just turned 100,000 miles. I am a fool and never deserve to own a WJ again. But I am hopeful I will. I have been looking since late 2015. I may have to purchase a highly distressed WJ and just rebuild it. I will never find a jewel like the old WJ I had. I was only given $2500 on a trade in for the crap 2011 Grand Cherokee. Hind sight is 20-20. Do not buy any, "Jeep," past the AMC 242ci I6 era, except maybe the Wrangler. I am an idiot.

    What I don't understand is what antenna would you use if you want to install this in a truck and use all for bands? Or would you have to use two antennas somehow?

    • @Mudslidex1
      @Mudslidex1  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If there’s a certain band you’re going to operate in most, then you can use one sized for that band. They do make multi-band antennas that will work but do an “ok” job at each band but not great. Or you can put an antenna for each band you use and go into a switcher which then goes into the radio. You dan then select via the switch which antenna you want to be using

    OK, I see you have NOAA programmed, (162.400.) I attempted to program this same frequency into my TYT TH-9800 and it wouldn't accept it. I tried both the left and right sides. How did you do it?

    • @Mudslidex1
      @Mudslidex1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't program it on the radio itself. I used the CHIRP program to copy all my stations over. I guess that's why it let me do it. I never tried from the radio itself

    • @SteveFlanigan
      @SteveFlanigan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mudslidex1 I used CHIRP for most of the frequencies. I just entered 162.400 into CHIRP and will upload to the radio this way. I just got this radio last Tuesday, so I am still getting use to it. --Thanks :-)

      @@SteveFlanigan Hope it works. It should as I didn't have any issues using CHIRP. I'm actually pleasantly surprised with this radio. It's been working great and much cheaper than the Yaseu version of it

    • @SteveFlanigan
      @SteveFlanigan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mudslidex1 Well, the frequency loaded using the CHIRP software, but the radio will not use the frequency. I tried all NOAA frequencies and when tuned to the channel I put the NOAA frequency on, the radio beeps but that is it. When I move to another channel and then try to come back to the channel that NOAA is on, the radio simply just bypasses that memory slot. Maybe them made some changes between when your radio was built and mine was.
