    Thanks for the great review of the 9800. I’m looking at mounting mine in the rear of my Ex-FHP Charger with the head mounted remotely. Also love you command center. Make me want to build one out also.

      I would suggest an Extension Speaker. Watch Hamfests for an Old Motorola or Kenwood Speakers. Great Sound. Mount it behind your head on the B Post! That is the best advise I can give! We did it every Fire Truck for 20 years!

    Thanks a lot. I really liked how genuine and straight forward you are with this. I just bought the PLUS version, I'm hoping whatever they've upgraded helps solve any issues the others were returned for. I'm a new ham really having a blast. I got a cheap quad band mobile antenna for it, but I'm going to be using it as a base station. I think I'll set it up with a fan on it right away.

      Absolutely! Keep it cool, and if your using the CossBand Repeat or talking a lot, I would try to use lower wattage to keep the internal temperature down. When I crossband to a repeater for a net, I run the power on both sides on low and it seems to do great! I have two, they are both well over a year old, heavily used, and they are great! I am careful about the heat!

      @@StarShipAdventures Excellent explanation about this radio. I am in the market for a mobile thus your review is for me spot on. Thank you.
      FYI, "...and if your using the CossBand Repeat ...", should be you are, or you're, absolutely it makes a difference. When writing your that which follows belongs to the person you are writing to. When we speak the word, your there is not any way to differentiate your from you're, when writing your and you're (you are), each have completely different and unrelated meanings and usages. In print the incorrect use for your or you're (you are) makes any sentence not make a lick of sense. Cordially.

    Hello from NZ, I have had my radio for 6 plus years and enjoy using it. Mine does tx on 27 in AM as standard. Also, I turn the beep on in chirp but when pressing the band freqs the beep comes back, can’t figure that one.
    My only query is about the buttons on the right side of the mic, A,B,C,D - what do they do? Can the be programmed? How? Great channel keep up the great work.

    • @StarShipAdventures
      @StarShipAdventures  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm glad it was helpful. Then using the cross band I strongly suggest running both sides on the lowest power possible to accomplish the task. Also I suggest keeping it in a cool space with a fan blowing across the back. Heat dissipation on cross band where the duty cycle is higher than 50% is a Is potential problem

      @StarShipAdventures it won't do full power it seems. 20w even on 462 out of curiosity. I thought it would do at least 40w. Either way my dad can do his normal radio stuff and respond to our tractor guy on .550

  • @andrewrudlang2785

    Agree 100%. I have had two of these and while I only use them about once a week for nets and such I have been loving the crossband repeat function, as I can be anywhere in my neighborhood with a 5 watt HT and still get on my net. Planning to install the other one in my car. I think these are even superheterodyne aren't they? Pretty good value for $200

    • @StarShipAdventures
      @StarShipAdventures  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Just watch your duty cycle on Nets. I always make sure my local frequency is on Low and that the Radio is well ventilated. Heat dissipation is a weakness of this unit. In cross band repeat monitoring a net it is in a 100% Duty Cycle. Makes me nervous, so I have a Dryer Hose from my Air Vent that blows Air conditioned Air right onto the housing of the unit. That seems to work.

    Man, you have an EPIC shack/command center!! It looks super badass. I had a Yaesu FT-8900 several years ago that I kinda regret selling. I have not had one of the Yaesu Models, but the copycat one is great. I have two, one base, one mobile. The TYT-8900 performs just as well receiving as any of my other VHF Rigs. I can also say that it put out nearly the full 50 watts promised if on a good power source..

    I am a noob but I don't understand.; if this radio is FM only then how come I can talk to AM radios on the 11 M band just fine. I set up a cross band repeater so I can talk to the trucks in the yard using my Baofang HT. It works just fine. I didn't think k I was supposed to be able to talk to regular CB radios in FM but it works just fine... must be AM as well? There is a selection in the channel config to select AM. How did I get this to work if it is FM only?

      @StarShipAdventures Thanks! I'm not criticizing your review, it's just that I want to understand. You are not the only one who's said on TH-cam that this FM radio won't talk to regular CBs but I guess no one has actually tried it because it SEEMs to work fine for me. Being a new HAM wannabe I would really like to know the technical reasons for all this.
      One thing I learned doing this experiment is the the tyt-9800 does NOT work great as a CB but it DOES in fact work. In my noob opinion, if you want to play around on 10-12 meters for dx it's better to get a separate 10 m rig but this does exactly what I want in the pickup.
      I look forward to hear what you come up with

      @@MaPMaKaR I saw another comment about this radio on another video review.
