Thanks for the review! Just ordered although I will end up using it for a base rig since I don't have a car yet. Currently have three UV-5R's (why three? Well radios are like guns, never can have too many I suppose!) and it seams like along with Chirp the interface is very similar. The Yaesu was very tempting but after I factored in power supply, new antennas, etc. I'd be pushing 500 bones. Pretty new to HAM radio, I'm up in Onondaga County NY, about 160 miles north of you, if you are ever in the area or remotely close try out the KD2SL repeater, we have a great 2 meter set of repeaters an insane 6 meter repeater that uses an old Channel 2 TV tower with batwing antennas that pushes 6 meters out as far as you can imagine, 100watts pushed into it and the ERP is out of this planet. 73! I just purchase a TYT TH-9800 PLUS from a friend yesterday (1/12/18) for just $160.He had only connected it long enough to make one 2 meter simplex contact. He got an ICOM 7200 & never used this radio.Nothing had been removed from the box other than the radio, power cord & microphone.I'll be putting it in my pickup next month after I purchase a Diamond Quad Band antenna at the 2018 Orlando Hamcation. Until then I'll leave my ICOM 2820H installed which will be moved into my Ham Shack as my VHF/UHF FM & D-STAR Base.Thought I had seen some pictures of these radios with a green display but there is no mention in the manual of changing the display color & all of the videos on TH-cam show the Amber display? I'm looking forward to giving it a try. Thanks for the video & sorry you had issues with yours but if mine fails I'll just put the 2820H back in the truck & for sure NOT buy a Yaesu of any model EVER at any price, even FREE I would not own one if I'm required to keep & use it.I have my pride & it won't ever allow that in this lifetime.
I believe the green display and changing the display color was an option on the previous dual band version. Out of curiosity, why the extremely negative opinion of Yaesu ?
Brandon - it does have the capability to do "busy channel lockout" It did not come that way from the factory. You would have to turn that on either through the menus or the settings in CHIRP. I don't remember if it has a mic gain setting. I believe it does but I never changed it. This radio just worked right out of the box with very little work on my part. I just pasted the config from on of my HT's and cloned it to this one and I was on the air.
Thank you for your time and answering my questions. Hopefully I can get me one soon. I have several radios all of which are dual band mobiles but a quad bander sounds fun. Thanks again and 73. AF5GV
Sorry it took me so long to see the cross-band part of your question. I have been having trouble getting my antenna tuned for 10 meters, but 70cm, 2m and 6m work great !
Thanks for your great video! I just got the TH 9800 and the computer will not connect using CHIRP, i get this error message: "Failed to communicate with the radio: Radio NAKed block. I've tried everything but can't get the radio downloaded to my computer. Any tips and tricks would be so appreciated! Thank you, i just subscribed
Hi Jim nice insight footage on the TYT. How did you find checking the SWR and tune the Diamond CR8900 Quad Band antenna. I actually brought the genuine TYT purpose built Antenna, virtually identical to yours fitted to your wagon. but with my stranded SWR meter it reads a very high 1;1-1:3 SWR and I'm a little bit worried about this, this SWR meter will not cover 70cm. No matter where I adjust the tuning tip, the SWR goes higher. I mounted this antenna as a base station on the top of a twenty foot steel mast pole to ground/earth. your advice and help would be appreciated Jim 73's from Paul the UK
many cig. lighter jacks are only good for 10 amps so check the fuse that protects that power jack and check the voltage at the radio while transmitting to ensure there is minimal voltage drop.
I have several Accessory Power Plugs in my Dodge Quad Cab & each of them have power all of the time & provide 20 amps as does my Cigarette Lighter Jack. Not like the old days.Maybe you are showing your age? LOL
Almost a year after installing this radio, I replaced it with a Yaesu FT-8900r. Had a bunch of strange problems with this radio. Finally I had carrier into a repeater but no audio and I had enough. Looking at making this just a repeater some time in the future.
+Alessandro Concas thank you very much for the information. I recently had CHIRP cause a massive issue with my Yaesu FT-8900a and had to buy different software. That fixed the issue very rapidly.
I would NOT own any Yaesu for FREE.POS garbage is all they build in transceivers & they have cost me a bunch of Cash because they SUCKED badly.I find ICOM as a Superior product hands down but they don't make an FM only Quad Band Transceiver so I'll stick with my TYT TH-9800 PLUS.
Dear Jim. I like your video. can you make a detail photo of a mount the front panel of radio in car? how it connected to a "mast" in there? thanks. Tony @RC3C, Moscow
I’ve had excellent results with this antenna. Using it for a base . . . I guess you could provided you could get a good mount, but the cable is really made for mobile applications. I’m sure it would work in any case.
Im looking into buying one of these radios and I have heard that it is factory set to Busy channel lock out. This keeps you from talking or transmitting while the repeaters are busy. Did you have this problem out of the box and does it have a microphone gain option in the menu? I also would like to know if it has cross band repeat capability as well. Thank you and have a great day. 73 from AF5GV Crowley, TX
Hello Jim, I just picked up one of these radios and I know it's not really an issue for most but I have seen adds that mention FM Broadcast receive capabilities but I can't find out how to activate that. Have I misunderstood?
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I don't remember the specs saying that it would receive FM broadcast frequencies. I just took a look through the radio settings in the CHIRP file and there are no settings for FM broadcast. Also, I would strongly suggest getting the RT Systems software ( www.rtsystemsinc.com/RPS-9800-programming-software-and-USB-cable-s/2346.htm ) to program the radio. CHIRP caused me issues that caused me to replace the radio with a Yaesu FT-8900r
hi I just got this radio in the mail yesterday I really like it but I can't get CHIRP to program it as I cannot see this radio in any of the drop down how did you do it? Thanks
+rpunzell Get the latest version of the CHIRP daily build. You have to dig a little more on the CHIRP website to find it, but it is in there and works great !
it is a quad band radio that covers from 29MHz to 440MHz. those bands require an amateur radio license. it will also work on GMRS frequencies that also require a license. It also works on FRS frequencies that do not require a license but this radio exceeds the FRS power limits set by the FCC.
@@BasementGunshop FRS does require an FCC "license", which comes with the FCC ID that grants Part 95 type-acceptance for use in FRS (including numerous "bonehead" features this radio lacks).
Have you used the radio on the gmrs frequencies. I am interested in this radio in hopes in getting my hams license but in the interm use it as a gmrs while hunting. What kind of distance is achievable with this radio on the gmrs.
+User it does work on GMRS and FRS frequencies. But you actually do need a license for GMRS. A GMRS license is $85 for 5 years and there is no test required.
I do have the have the licence as I have been using the GMRS HT`s but the range on those are just a bit further then I can throw them in terms of using them in the country. What kind of distance can I expect on simplex with the TYT-TH9800 mobile radio rig
+User where I live we have a lot of mountains and of course that cuts back your distance. But transmitting with 50 watts I have ever hit repeaters 50 plus miles away on 2 meters. Given the same physical circumstances there's no reason to not expect the same performance during simplex operation.
Looks like the quality control at TYT has taken a turn for the worse. I'm on my third radio now, 2 DOA and one lasted only a week. That's with minimal use and at SWR of less than 1.2...uggg.
Correction; I did go back and review what I said. My statement was that,"With my General license I could call CQ." I did not say that a person had to have a General license to use the 2 meter band. Although I can see where what I said can be construed as meaning that.
Great video very easy to follow along. I appreciate your time as I just purchased the same radio and that will help me get it going.

Great video. I have one too.
TH9800D Plus. Almost too many features.
Good demo thank you friend
It would be nice if this device turned on when a call came in, I couldn't find much in the settings, there is only the screen light on and off

If anyone is interested, I got my FT-8900r at hamcity.com for $333.67 and that price included shipping.
Your problem on radio is caused by CHIRP other ham have same probl after programming the radio or importing ch memory... had reset will fix at 80%

Would you recommend that antenna for a base setup or maybe a J Pole ? Thanks for the vid.

+Brandon Allison It does do cross-band repeat. I haven't played with that as yet, but it does have that function.
can you hear airband?
Hi, can you help me with the mountain head! I couldn't remove the head from the radio!!!
thanks chirps working now
nice video, do you know how to turn off the roger beep on this radio?
Hello Jim, I just picked up one of these radios and I know it's not really an issue for most but I have seen adds that mention FM Broadcast receive capabilities but I can't find out how to activate that. Have I misunderstood?

Also, make sure your antenna is grounded REALLY REALLY well or you'll never get anything out of 6 or 10 meters.
Hi :)
Wow, you look like Mr Lahey...in Trailer park boys???

o ok thanks 4 the info. :)

does this radio has a mic gain option in the menu to adjust microphone audio?
I did not see it in the menu but the transmit audio is very good.It has a Wide & Narrow setting only as I recall at least on the TH-9800 PLUS model.
You use w3bxw often?
Are you able to use the radio as a repeater on the same band or does it have to be cross band?
The TYT will only do cross-band repeat.

Why is he talking about a Mobil rig? Mobil is a trade name.
incorrect. Mobile means moving....
LOL,You ain't from around here are you? LOL
You don't need a General Class License so that you may call CQ on 2 meters as you stated at 7:43 of the video.

A little light dusting to your radio may make for a better video, no offense.
