Geezz.... 30 years ago I was a kid having fun with 27mhz. I was just about to put and old rci2950 back into my camper. Why bother when I can get one of these for a few hundred bucks... Goodness how electronics has advanced.
Love the Kenwood 741 you're using as a prop. I have one of these but the buttons are falling out. They just kind of friction fit in the panel and all the foam that holds them in has decayed over the years of sitting in a HOT Texas car.
+David Dennis it is a great radio. Mine had the same issue, so I sent it over to Cliff at AVVID for repair. - avvid.com/ - he is a bit crotchety over email, but he is an authorized Kenwood repairman and does excellent work. My TM741A looks and works like brand new. And it is a triband, I have the 220MHz module in it.
+Ham Radio 2.0 Thanks for the repair advice. I've had it as a project on my list for over a year, so I may just go ahead and contact Cliff about getting this repaired. Thanks for the helpful advice. Mine too is a TriBand. Only I have 10m FM as the third band in mine.
I had one and it lasted about a year and a half ago the receiver quit working on all bands.I contacted many repair shops across America and I found NOBODY who would touch it for even an attempt at a repair.I contacted several dealers who sell them and none of them could offer me any leads for a repair short of returning it to China which would require me paying shipping both ways and the repair costs.I could have purchased another one for less money so I sold it for parts to a Military Man in Texas who wanted to make an attempt at it.I have not heard back from him now in 4 or 5 months so I guess he has not made any progress.I had some fun with it in my mobile during band openings on both Ten and Six meters with the Diamond Quad Band mobile antenna while it lasted.I would NOT ever buy another one since nobody will repair them.I’ll stick with my ICOM gear and know it’s repairable in America.👍🎙
@@discofishing I use an antenna analyzer to tune my antenna’s for every antenna and every band.I’m not an Idiot.I have only been tuning antenna’s since the 60’s how about you?
I am getting my 9800 plus dusted off and want to start using it again. But I need to find another ‘head unit- mount bracket’. No-one seems to have them for sale. Is there an alternative you could suggest for this?
This radio had a design flaw with over-voltage of the CMX-138 audio chips. Do you know if manufacturer fixed this issue in the latest revision of this radio?
I think there is a keypad lock for the screen, but the way I like to do it is read the radio from a computer and save a codeplug file that can later be loaded back into the radio.
Hello Thank you for the nice video about the VHF/UHF part of this TYT TH-9800 quad band radio but it would have good to at lest have an antenna hooked up to it so we could hear it working. But also what about the 29/50 meters segments of that radio which we seen very little of what it can do let alone hearing nothing of its audio quality let alone also not hearing any ting as to what antenna/antennas would be best to use for this quad band radio both in the HOME base setup and indeed in the mobile especially if you are looking to perhaps buying one of these radios. Let alone as to what additional cost you would be looking at in the antenna range let alone any other things you would need like a switch box for changing over the antenna or an antenna range seeing how there are not two many quad band mobile antennas around for that radio setup let alone for its home base setup at lest in the vertical range that would suite it either looking at what’s available or unavailable as that radio has just has a single OS232 socket on the back. Thank you again and who knows I many work you some time at lest on 10 meters. 73s 🌍
+Ham Radio 2.0 Thank you, just so I make sure I understand I can monitor the police on one side and TX and RX on the other side at the same time? Also: which Radio do you recommend this the TYT TH-9800 OR the QYT KT-UV980? I currently have a Baofeng UV-5R for mobile and LOVE it. Thank you
Since Yasue has a hate / love relationship with CHIRP, can the TH-9800 being a Yaesu clone, be safely programmed with CHIRP without risk of bricking the radio?
This isn't really a Yaesu clone. There are small but noticable differences. I wouldn't worry about chirp not working with Yaesu, as it pertains to this radio
Very good video instruction. How does the performance of the this TYT complare with the Yeasu? I looks like the scan function is slower than my FT8800R. Is that true or is it just how it looks on the video? What about other performance comparisons? Thanks.
It does scan slower than the Yaesu. I have an FT-8900 that I used for about a year before I got this TYT, and the differences are minor, but they are there. Yaesu makes a better radio - you can't really argue that. However, for the price, TYT's radio is really good. I have had no issues with mine and I run it in my truck every day.
@@HamRadio2 you have to purchase the programming software and the cable and there is a mic gain in the program lowering or increasing Mic Gain. But it can only be done with the programming software
I just purchased one from China works perfect all except the mic has muffled deviation not radio" put it in crossband clear as a bell. What other replacement mics w/ rj-45 connector out there I can use on radio. Or adapter rj-45 to ? Also neen mic rj 45 wiring diagram.
I have a 7800 too. Still don't quite understand the programming. I have vhf and uhf on left side, uhf and vhf on right side. Don't know about the 9800, but owner's manual on 7800 leaves much info out.
Hi, if I throw freqs into the TYT with Chirp, will the codeplug make the changes on the radio in order to use the repeaters? All info is on the codeplug correctly.
Just ordered one after a long time looking at this particular model...really wanted 2 meters AND 6 meters...already have 2 meter HT's. Got the programming cable for Chirp too but no power supply. Any suggestions on how to run this indoors off AC power or off a battery that I can keep in my bed room? My "shack" is my room.
+nateo200 A power supply would be best. You can run it from a battery and get a maintainer, but be sure and get a sealed battery because charging a non-sealed battery indoors can produce toxic fumes.
+Ham Radio 2.0 Yeah my main worry is about non-sealed batteries, I've always been very cautious about electronics and batteries. I've decided to go with an AC to DC power supply adapter for now but in the future I'm thinking a battery will be nice for portable like use. Didn't know this radio did cross band repeating which could be helpful for certain events I attend, its very effective for fire/Law enforcement so pretty cool to see it for amateur radio! Thanks! KD2KKH
Can you set this radio up to cross band to uhf at max power and vhf to low power? I want a small foot print for my vhf HT because I only want to use it as a hands free option for around my property to get into the local uhf repeater
I had a Yaesu FT8900 and returned it... they changed how "banks" work from the 8800. I really like how you can program banks, and assign them to the 1-3 and 4-6 keys (or A B C and D E F on the TYT) and more importantly scan that bank. The 8900 would scan ALL freqs and didn't utilize bank scanning. Are you familiar with what I'm explaining? And if so, does the TYT scan each memory channel (or channels assigned to that letter) individually? Or, will it scan like the 8900 does? ... I program a 9800 tomorrow. So I'm curious and would like to explain it to the owner.
What is the difference between the 9800 and the 9800 plus ? Is there a way to open up the rest of the receive range ? So I can get the 222 MHz band RX and the 500 and 600 band ?
Enjoyed your presentation- I also enjoy listening to NOAA weather channel (162.400). I’m wondering how to change the frequency range so that I can pickup NOAA. Will you explain how it’s done, please? KB5WRL Ron Cichocki
if your scanning say 6 meter can you save a repeater freq. in memory can you scan it. also will the memory hold freq. from all band and scan them or just scan one band freqs. at a time?
If you are scanning from the left side of the radio, which all bands are workable from, then yes. It scans all bands at once. The right side only scans mem channels in 2M/440
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or what I guess I need to buy another radio and see if it works the same. If I would buy one from you would you check out the crossband repeat feature for me before being sent?
Ham Radio 2.0 that is very low? I get 50 watts or better on both bands with my own TH-9800.Do you have the power settings right on yours? Those numbers for yours are quite a bit below spec.I love mine and have worked all over the USA on it on both 6 & 10 meters during band openings.I use it Mobile with the Diamond CR8900A antenna with pretty good success.
i had to come back to this video to finally learn how to use it al least on the repeater functions i do have a question i went to the repeater book and in the tone in and out when you see like 127.3 on in and out how would you set that on out on radio? on the out part
Is their a way to display the frequency after you name your channels? On my Yeasu FT-60 if I press the band button it will switch between the named frequency and the frequency.
LOL,NO SUCH THING as a YEASU anything. It's a YAESU just like it says on the radio & every piece of paper that came with it including the Box.Do you actually own a radio that you can't spell the name on it? LOL {:>)
Hey guys... Just out of curiosity... Why would I need to set to lower power? This doesn't use battery, is there any other advante for lower power than energy saving?
I know this is a old thread. But cannot find any info on how to program 10 meter FM on this unit. Also, can you confirm this unit will transmit and receive on 10 FM SSB? Thank you

thanks for the video, is this radio the same in programming as the zastone mp800 ? i have a mp800 quad band and am trying to learn how to programm it - thanks
@@HamRadio2 Thank you very much for your return. I'm looking for a base or mobile radio that has TX and TR in the AM (cb frequency)/VHF/UHF bands and that is not too expensive and that fits in a small space in my apartment. Congratulations on your channel. Huge 73.
What kind of set up do you have for running this of normal 120v house outlet? I am planning on buy one to run at my house so I was just wondering if you could help me out.
Your kidding right? If you are a new ham, then get some help from a local ELMER While this radio isn't difficult to program its not intuitive especially for a newbie. An appropriate power supply would be something like the MFJ 4125
I followed the steps in your video as well as using the manual. For some reason when I hit the PTT there is no transmission. Although once I let off the PTT it makes a little noise. I have another (working) radio set to the same repeater to listen. It is as if the TYT KT-9800 is transmitting on the output of the repeater. Like the + shift isn't working at all. It must be a bad one.
looking for a cheap mobile radio, ideally i'd like to get some SSB/AM function for 2m and 6m (i'd love to have some 10m->160m, but the only thing that even comes close to that is the Yaesu 857D or Icom 706 mk2g) -- are there any chinese mobile radio's that are doing SSB/AM functions for 2m, 6m, 4m, or 10-160? also, are you getting the most "up to date" versions of these radios? i think aliexpress has the newest "1601A" versions. does this thing also have ability to TX on 220 and 440 (even if it is FM only?) how does this compare to the Anytone AT-5888? is the TYT the "best option" for 2m/70cm mobile FM?
Nothing from China that compares with the 857 or 706 at this time. They only have QRP rigs at this time. 9800 radios are the latest. TYT and Anytone are about the same quality.
Ham Radio 2.0 thanks. man i wish they just put SSB on the 9800. i bet those would sell like hotcakes if it could do SSB on 6m/2m. i'll probably still pick one up.
@@larsjonssonX07 You should ask him, then. I've never seen one with that band. I suspect it is sold in Europe since that band is used there and not in the USA
thank u for youre quick response.but, what Im wanting too know WHAT it should be "safely" set at?? low med2,med1 or, high??( too safely operate the radio)
You can safely operate the radio from any of these settings. It depends more on where your antenna is located. With an antenna external to the car or house, you shouldn't have any issues operating on any of the power settings.
Have you figured out what the "A", "B", "C" and "D" buttons on the microphone work? I thought they would access my first four hyper memory slots, but when I hit any one of them from the mic nothing happens.
+Rob Williamson the "A", "B", "C" and "D" buttons on the microphone are additional DTMF tones like the numbers. They are not used a whole lot, but some radios still have them. Try keying up on a simplex frequency while pressing the numbers and letters at the same time, you will see what I mean. Hope that helps.
I just received my radio from Amazon and it said that it will do GMRS frequency but I did not get them paper talking about changing the frequency. So can this radio do gmrs frequency?

I’m trying to hook my CB up so I can hear truckers call in accidents or hear cal trans or law enforcement mention road closures. Is there any way you can help me out with setting this TYT up please? I would more then appreciate it
Geezz.... 30 years ago I was a kid having fun with 27mhz. I was just about to put and old rci2950 back into my camper. Why bother when I can get one of these for a few hundred bucks... Goodness how electronics has advanced.
No kidding
Did you tune your antennas properly? If not that can reduce the life of your transceiver.
@@discofishing I use an antenna analyzer to tune my antenna’s for every antenna and every band.I’m not an Idiot.I have only been tuning antenna’s since the 60’s how about you?
Awesome video. Very helpful
Thanks for explaining this!
No problem
Excellent video that really helped. Thank you much.
Thanks for watching
I am getting my 9800 plus dusted off and want to start using it again. But I need to find another ‘head unit- mount bracket’. No-one seems to have them for sale. Is there an alternative you could suggest for this?
Not that I know of
@@HamRadio2 thanks for quick reply. Subbed.
This radio had a design flaw with over-voltage of the CMX-138 audio chips. Do you know if manufacturer fixed this issue in the latest revision of this radio?
I wanna know too
Thank you. What would be a good beginner class or video I could watch?
Great video. Question, how to lock after everything is programmed? To avoids accidentally touch and mess up the setting. Thanks
I think there is a keypad lock for the screen, but the way I like to do it is read the radio from a computer and save a codeplug file that can later be loaded back into the radio.
How are these Radios holding up long term?
Hello
Thank you for the nice video about the VHF/UHF part of this TYT TH-9800 quad band radio but it would have good to at lest have an antenna hooked up to it so we could hear it working.

Great videos, Can you please tell me if you can monitor 2 frequencies at the same time, like the UV-5R? or can you only monitor one?
+Jay Money You can hear both at the same time...they'll talk on top of each other.
Thank you
Quick question
Does this radio capable of handling MARS frequencies?
73,
KB3EPD
Jermaine
+Nasty Stingray Yes
Since Yasue has a hate / love relationship with CHIRP, can the TH-9800 being a Yaesu clone, be safely programmed with CHIRP without risk of bricking the radio?
This isn't really a Yaesu clone. There are small but noticable differences. I wouldn't worry about chirp not working with Yaesu, as it pertains to this radio
I have motorola CDM1250 and now have the TYT 9800 but i wonder which one is better for distance.
Can you key in the PL tone with the mic keypad while being at the tone menu option or only up and down?
Only up and down.
Aww, that sucks. Not that I'm lazy, but, cycling through all the tones can be annoying. Thanks for your response.
Thanks ! very helpful ... I'm trying to program my tyt 7800 . it came with channels 1 and 2 programed so how do I delete those channels ?
Just overwrite them
@@HamRadio2 Ok I didn't try that cause it didn't work on my Baofing ... Duh ! ... Thanks much .
I just received this radio but cant seem to find the mic gain? Is there a mic gain lol? Thanks for this video very helpful.
its in there as "narrow or wide" but they call it something else.
@@HamRadio2 you have to purchase the programming software and the cable and there is a mic gain in the program lowering or increasing Mic Gain. But it can only be done with the programming software
Would you recommend this radio for a new ham
Also does TYT make a Radio that has more band capabilities thanks for any help
No more band capabilities that I'm aware of
I just purchased one from China works perfect all except the mic has muffled deviation not radio" put it in crossband clear as a bell. What other replacement mics w/ rj-45 connector out there I can use on radio.
Or adapter rj-45 to ?
Also neen mic rj 45 wiring diagram.
"THANKS",MY FRIEND!!
Hey Jason, do you know if this radio can be used with an amplifier that utilizes a relay ?
Not sure on the relay part, but it should work with any mobile radio amp.
Thank you brother for this video really helped me out big time.
Thanks for watching
The best vid thus far on the 9800..Nice job.. Have one coming from China.. Some dispute as to transmit AM .. Can you confirm or deny..
The original models would TX on AM. The newer ones are not supposed to, but I have seen some situations where they actually will.
What antenna would you recomend for a mobile application ? Thanks KJ5BPC
I just use a dual band - the Comet SBB5. Diamond makes one that covers all 4 of these bands but the specs on it aren't great.
Thanks so much. K4APD.
Thanks for the reply Jason. K4APD.
Will this radio Morse identify when it's in crossband repeat? DTMF remote control? The radio that its a copy of does.
I think so...
Can you program channel names?
In the software, yes
Thanks for your help. I have figured everything out. And your video helped me figure out how to program it without software.
Yes you can do that
I had a Yaesu FT8900 and returned it... they changed how "banks" work from the 8800.
9800 Plus replaced the 9800 a couple of years ago. It fixed some minor issues with the original model
Enjoyed your presentation- I also enjoy listening to NOAA weather channel (162.400). I’m wondering how to change the frequency range so that I can pickup NOAA. Will you explain how it’s done, please?
KB5WRL
Ron Cichocki
The radio I have will RX on 162.400 already. I didn't change anything.
if your scanning say 6 meter can you save a repeater freq. in memory can you scan it. also will the memory hold freq. from all band and scan them or just scan one band freqs. at a time?
If you are scanning from the left side of the radio, which all bands are workable from, then yes. It scans all bands at once. The right side only scans mem channels in 2M/440
Hi Jason very good info vid I have a HYT TM 800 in need info on how to input frequency channels Thanks Michael
Major Mike?
How do I adjust the rf gain and Mic gain on these?
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or what I guess I need to buy another radio and see if it works the same. If I would buy one from you would you check out the crossband repeat feature for me before being sent?
You mentioned the power output levels for the 2 meter & 440 mhz bands but I missed it if you mentioned the 6 & 10 meter bands?
They're about 25-35 watts each
Ham Radio 2.0 that is very low? I get 50 watts or better on both bands with my own TH-9800.Do you have the power settings right on yours? Those numbers for yours are quite a bit below spec.I love mine and have worked all over the USA on it on both 6 & 10 meters during band openings.I use it Mobile with the Diamond CR8900A antenna with pretty good success.
@@1OFGODSOWN They're advertised at 50-watts, but I have found that rarely they get that high on those 2 bands.
i had to come back to this video to finally learn how to use it al least on the repeater functions i do have a question i went to the repeater book and in the tone in and out when you see like 127.3 on in and out how would you set that on out on radio? on the out part
Can you tell me if on the 9800 does the buttons on the face plate light up. I can read it in the car.
No they don't
Can you use RT Systems software for the Yaesu 8900 to program this unit?
I've not tried, but I suspect not. Chirp does work though.
Yes,I had a friend use his Yaesu FT-8900 software to program my TYT TH-9800
@@1OFGODSOWN Thanks for the info.
What kinda antenna you running on this guy? I just purchased one and want the right gear for my truck as well. Thanks for the link
Where can I get WIN 10 drivers for the USB programing cable?
How about doing one with CHIRP. Tried the yaesu 8900 method but they don't open the same way I suspect.
I'll look into that, thanks
Would you please show how to program this radio using the software for it and CHRIP, since it is capable of alfa-numaric programming and display.
Is their a way to display the frequency after you name your channels? On my Yeasu FT-60 if I press the band button it will switch between the named frequency and the frequency.
Yes you can choose which to display in the menu and in the software.
You may do so with the touch of a button but there is no such thing as a YEASU anything.
LOL,NO SUCH THING as a YEASU anything. It's a YAESU just like it says on the radio & every piece of paper that came with it including the Box.Do you actually own a radio that you can't spell the name on it? LOL {:>)
1OFGODSOWN Apparently your smart enough to figure what I was talking about.
Hey guys... Just out of curiosity... Why would I need to set to lower power? This doesn't use battery, is there any other advante for lower power than energy saving?
Great video of basic functions. Thank you! 73, KI5KTQ
Glad it was helpful!
I know this is a old thread. But cannot find any info on how to program 10 meter FM on this unit. Also, can you confirm this unit will transmit and receive on 10 FM SSB?
Thank you
It is FM only. And you can only use 10M on the left side of the radio.
greetings; can u PLZ tell if the "cooling fan"is supposed to come on when they unit is turned on.or,does it only come on when it senses a certain temp.mine only spins for about a second when i first turn it on??
It should come on when you key it up, or when it gets to a certain temp. It should not run all the time.
thanks for the video, is this radio the same in programming as the zastone mp800 ? i have a mp800 quad band and am trying to learn how to programm it - thanks
Yea they should be about the same
Hi Ham Radio 2.0 can you tell me if the TH-9800 model does TX and RX in AM 27Mhz (CB frequency)? Big 73.
The newer ones will not, no. Some of the original units did, but they removed that.
It's just a Radio Shack power supply in the video
YOu simply need a 12 volt supply. The radio only pulls 8.5 amps at high power. Not much to it.
It must be a bad one.
looking for a cheap mobile radio, ideally i'd like to get some SSB/AM function for 2m and 6m (i'd love to have some 10m->160m, but the only thing that even comes close to that is the Yaesu 857D or Icom 706 mk2g) -- are there any chinese mobile radio's that are doing SSB/AM functions for 2m, 6m, 4m, or 10-160?
also, are you getting the most "up to date" versions of these radios? i think aliexpress has the newest "1601A" versions.
does this thing also have ability to TX on 220 and 440 (even if it is FM only?)
how does this compare to the Anytone AT-5888? is the TYT the "best option" for 2m/70cm mobile FM?
Nothing from China that compares with the 857 or 706 at this time. They only have QRP rigs at this time.
9800 radios are the latest.
TYT and Anytone are about the same quality.
Ham Radio 2.0 thanks. man i wish they just put SSB on the 9800. i bet those would sell like hotcakes if it could do SSB on 6m/2m.
i'll probably still pick one up.
The 857D is a POS.I had one & would not accept another one for FREE if I must keep & use it.It'd rather have a Cheap AM Only CB Radio.
Hi, I search for this Radio TYT 9800 Quadband with option 4M/ 66-88MHz?
I seems to be hopeless to find some,
Nope, never seen one with that band option
@@HamRadio2 I have a friend thats have this 9800 with 4M 66-88
@@larsjonssonX07 You should ask him, then. I've never seen one with that band. I suspect it is sold in Europe since that band is used there and not in the USA
thank u for youre quick response.but, what Im wanting too know WHAT it should be "safely" set at?? low med2,med1 or, high??( too safely operate the radio)
You can safely operate the radio from any of these settings. It depends more on where your antenna is located. With an antenna external to the car or house, you shouldn't have any issues operating on any of the power settings.
Can you use it as a Gmrs repeater like putting 462.550 on left and 467.550 on the right please let me know
No. It was repeat from the same band to the same band.
@@HamRadio2 what 1 radio can you use as a Repeater since I Don't have a lot of cash to get on being on SSI Disabled
@@RuossFamilyAdventures You would need 2 radios to create a repeater - one for TX and one for RX. It'd be easier to just buy a repeater.
Do the frequencies stored in the A B C D E F keys appear only in the left VFO? Is there no way to make them appear on the right side?
does it do pl tones on 10m and 6m for those repeaters? and does it do ssb and cw on all bands?
PL tones, yes. But no SSB or CW, it's FM only
Does it actually do 10/12 meter and how many antenna outputs?
It does 10M FM only with 1 antenna output
Do you still recommend this radio?
Have you figured out what the "A", "B", "C" and "D" buttons on the microphone work? I thought they would access my first four hyper memory slots, but when I hit any one of them from the mic nothing happens.
+Rob Williamson I haven't tried those. I think they are programmable in the menu, like the P1-P4 buttons, but I am not sure.
