Great looking installation. I am still working on getting my Tacoma installation finished. I haven't had good luck with suction type windshield mounts, though.
I've had good luck with that suction cup for some reason. I think out of the 5 years I've had it, it's popped off maybe 3 or 4 times. More times during the summer months when the car is facing south with the windshield directly in the sun.
Kyle, I've just found this video and have one question. I noticed ferrite snap on beads on multiple cables from mics to control cables and coax. Do you add ferrites to every cable as a matter of practice or were you chasing noise or other RFI? Just curious about when and where to apply ferrites. Thanks
@@paulKJ5GKK matter of practice. I didn't have any rf issues on vhf or uhf frequencies. I can't use HF while the engine is on because the fuel pump puts out a ton of RF.
I planning to add a uhf/vhf/hf mobile transceiver and a couple extra batteries so I can run it when my vehicle isn't running in my work van delivering. What people keep telling me I should run a CB as well but I have strong opinions against it, but with my job people I deliver to as a rural postal carrier use CB and I'm mainly a technician studying for the general, I'm not sure which can brand to get and I dont want a million radios in my work van 73, kq4hcu.
Hey Kyle! Thanks for the video describing your mobile install. I am interested in going mobile with my new GMC Truck and getting some ideas. I had a question on bonding. I have seen bonding done to the same bolt you used to fasten the NMO mount. I did see the strap going to the NMO mount in the back. Do you have any trouble with the coax getting pinched by the tailgate? Thanks again for your video! I like how you explain the reasons behind what you did. 73 de KI5HXM
Hi Kyle, thanks for the video. I ordered your exact bracket for my Tacoma. What do I exactly need to make a Nmo mount for ham stick like you showed in video. I m going to use for pota . Not mounting radio in truck. Thanks , Sandy
Hello Kyle I have a 2017 Tacoma and I have problem with rfi in 20 meters, I found the problem, was the fuel pump computer located under the driver side mounted at chassis. I bonded my car everywhere but still bad just in 20 meters, I can’t listen wen the engine is running. You can check my mobile station at my QRZ.com 73 de W4LDS

Hey Kyle, I am back again. Don’t take any of my questions as criticism just a curious guy wanting to know stuff. I noticed you put the 2m/70cm antenna for the FTM-400 on the hood. I liked how you did that, but am wondering about RF exposure with a 50W rig. Is that an issue I should be concerned with? I have been thinking about mounting a 2m/1.25m/70cm antenna on my roof since I need 5’ of clearance for RF exposure according to the ARRL calculator. Comments? The other question I have is the mounts for the HF antennas in the back. I am considering using a couple of ham sticks initially and with whips, I am leaning toward mounting them lower down more level with the bumper. But will this prevent signal from the truck in the way? Both VHF & HF antennas are going to be high and I am trying not to bang against low hanging lines and bridges. Lol. By the way, I really like how you placed your equipment. If you have any questions with my questions, let me know. I love this hobby that I get to use my mind again after retiring as an engineer. All the best! 73 de KI5HXM
Hey Brent. I don't worry about RF exposure because I do very little transmitting, but you do what is safe for you and within your risk level. Placing a HF antenna at bumper level will not affect your HF ability to contact stations. 73.
@@AA0Z Oh, you receive mainly? I have no idea how much I would talk on the road, but I have to design for the worst (kind of a engineering handicap - as it were haha). Thanks for answering my silly questions. Speaking of the bumper mount of HF sticks (future screwdriver maybe), I am trying to stay below 13’ total so I can avoid slamming it on a bridge. Do you know if that is good goal for the height?
I really like how you broke down the install of each cable; control head, mic, power and coax. Tacoma is such a small space to work with but you made it happen with 3 radios! But why do you need the Kenwood? I could see if you wanted a 3rd rig for DMR or a D-star rig but you can do APRS on the ftm-400 or just use an HT for aprs/146.520 monitoring.
I was going to pull the covers off but didn't have the right tools and patience where I was filming. Basically in that plastic mold along the bottom door jam where the cables route from the front to the back seating area is a lot of space to route cables. When I go on long trips I program the FTM-400 with all the repeaters. I use the Kenwood for APRS and to monitor 146.520. When I go out west, there is a ton of .52 traffic and I don't want to take up a VFO on the FTM400 for that.
How's the 2m Tx/Rx with that Rago mount? I have one on the way and I'm curious how the absence of a ground plane may affect it. I really don't want to drill a hole in the roof.
If you get a no-radial or no ground plane antenna, I've always had less sensitive reception than an antenna with a ground plane. The tail gate mount radio (TM-V710AG) has much more static than the same signal from the antenna from the hood mount. I had do some minor grounding to get any HF signal when using a hamstick.
I know this comment is 3 years old but I just came by to tell you not to be scared to drill through the roof, especially if you can find and pay a vehicle up-fitting shop to do it. Call your local police, municipality, county, etc and ask where they get their vehicles up-fitted. The same guys that wire up the cop cars, fire trucks, ambulances, etc can do a pro install in your personal vehicle. I've had my camper van up-fitted twice for ham radios and it was worth every penny!
Great install! I'm just running a TM-D710 in my 2017 Tacoma but my install was done in haste and not as nice. You did a great job finding antenna mounts that don't destroy the vehicle. And put in a lot of work running cables! Is the color of your Tacoma Calvary Blue? Fell in love with that color first time I saw it but not sure if it's still available. 73 Mike WB8CXO

The mic cable used to plug directly into the head unit, but for some reason the engineers have decided to move that plug to the main unit. now you have to run two cables from the main unit.
