Hey Russell. Just wanted to say thank you very much for this video. My '99 Ram 2500 with Cummins 5.9 had developed a squeal that started as being intermittent and devolved into a constant irritant any time the engine was running. I took your advice and replaced the belt with the Gates Fleetrunner. Knock on wood, the squeal is gone completely. Worth every penny.
Also there was a TSB for the first common rails- stamped alternator bracket could crack causing misalignment. Not easy to spot if you don’t inspect carefully. Updated bracket is cast. There was also a TSB for an alternator pulley with an over run clutch.
I know this is an old video, but I just ran across it! I have a 2002 Freightliner MT45 Step Van with the 5.9 Cummins. It has always had the squeak when I shut it off and I never knew why. This is awesome information!! I just had to change the water pump and idler assembly so I will give this belt a try. Many thanks!!!
My 2007 does same thing. My friends Chevy Duramax doesn't do it at all. The Cummins piston is much bigger being there are six instead of eight. It seems when engine is shut off the last compression stroke shoves the crank in reverse for a split second causing the chirp. Class A semi trucks do it all the time completely normal. Nice belt, I want one, looks way more stout than stock. Thanks!
The chirp may return. I just did some work on a 2000 Dodge Diesel equipped with this exact belt. Once it has some use it will chirp again but not very load. What is wrong with leaving the chirp alone? My 2002 has done this since day one. It is due to the torque that is exerted on the belt when the engine shuts down.
my gen 3 is doing the same thing, I ran across this. 2003-2006 Dodge Ram Trucks equipped with a 5.9L turbo diesel engine may emit a chirping sound. The noise is the result of the accessory drive belt slipping on the alternator pulley during engine shutdown. This condition is not uncommon with other vehicle manufacturers’ diesel applications, due to the high compression pressures and the sudden stop of the crankshaft during engine shutdown. Dodge recommends replacing the alternator pulley with a revised pulley (P/N 05183490AA), which incorporates an over-running clutch.
That belt only works because it's a butt hair smaller than the other ones puts more forces on your pullys not allowing anything to try to keep moving when you shut it off
Using a gates green fleet belt on an 05 3500. Not only chirps but squeals on hard acceleration This is a new belt and supposed to be good for 60k miles Im lost for solutions
mine dont squeak til after its been driving for a bit then shut off. if i idle for a min or two before shutdown it’ll mitigate squeak but not 100% ill try this belt
Gates belt cured mine, after I had shredded my old chirpy belt because my new alternator came with a one rib thinner pully wheel I didn't notice in time. Rippy Roo! Now I got the death wobble, wish I just put the Cummins in a Ford with leaf springs. Buying all the crap front end booger joints and crap steering will probably cost more than a Blown doner 6.3 Furd, f-me!
travcon8 oh I’m not worried about it. I was just telling you that it still does it with a new belt and when the fan is not running fast. But who cares, it still pulls my equipment better than any other truck I’ve owned.
Literally the only person who cares about that sounds lol My 1st Gen does it, my 2nd Gen does it and my 3rd Gen does it. It’s kinda a 5.9 Cummins staple. Who really cares. The water pumps go out often enough any way that you’re always replacing a belt no matter what. If you don’t like it, buy a Ford lol
I love that chirp. I have no idea why anyone would stop it from doing it

You my friend are the man 👊🏼
That sound you made is spot on.
Jacob Eicher L
The Cummins engines in the Rams are supposed to do that. By getting rid of the shut off chirp, you actually broke the truck.
Wyatt Lewis but why are they are supposed to do that
explain why Please this noise is very irritating and how does it break the truck?
I put one on my 03 today and did the water pump still nothing
I'm going to try the gates belt tensioner next
No they are not supposed to do that, but many of them do. They did not do that when they were new.
WOW YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!! I always wondered about that!!!

I bought a gait belt and it took the trip away as well. I kind of miss it, it's like a little indicator telling you you have a good compression
I got the same belt, went quiet for about 3 months and now it does it again.

I installed this pulley and it fixed the problem.
will this pulley work on 98 5.9 24v ? all the listings i see are for 05- 10
Do you happen to have a link for this? I'm searching for it and just want to confirm I am looking at the correct product.
That's the sound of a healthy engine!
That belt only works because it's a butt hair smaller than the other ones puts more forces on your pullys not allowing anything to try to keep moving when you shut it off
it's called a "Fleet Runner" belt. You will find that it does not work all the time. Mine still chirps from time to time.
I got the green belt, new alternator, new idle pulley and new tension pulley and it still does it on mine.
so do mine
Same here!
I'm going trough this and will try this belt hope it works for me too.
I have 2010 ram 3500 dually the same situacion this video was me solution thx guy GATE BELT 100% VERY GOOD fixed
Mine did that and I put a good year belt and 12 years later still doesn't chirp.
What is item model number (there is a few different types for this specific belt), and possibly the link off amazon that you bought this belt off of?
ok. what is item number on amazon
?i have 2001 dodge ram 2500 diesel.
the ol green belt...they use em on hellcats with smaller blower pullies.
Belt dressing is a joke, Baby powder takes car of my squeak for about 2 weeks, when it comes back just a little dump on a pulley and boom! Silent
what is the catch can system you have, and is it working the way you want, and how is it routed? Great video
Its an Amsoil bypass filter not a catch can.
I installed that one, one week later, chirp is back
Are you running a world one filter setup or one world setup? Can't remember what the brand name was.
Its an Amsoil bypass filter.
Its almost always a worn belt that squeeks on AC condenser pulley, or the ac condenser pulley is dirty/worn.
took my pulley off cleaned the ac condenser good and made sure it was okay, and no more chirp or sequel at all
Don’t bullshit keyboard mechanic. New belt old belt they all squeak
What's the link for Amazon
I ordered a new belt and looked in my parts pile and had a new one already just sitting there. Just needed to say that out loud. Chirp
Using a gates green fleet belt on an 05 3500.
Not only chirps but squeals on hard acceleration

Im lost for solutions
Why do you let a little noise bother you .
mine dont squeak til after its been driving for a bit then shut off. if i idle for a min or two before shutdown it’ll mitigate squeak but not 100% ill try this belt
Are you happy with that bypass filter?
Yes very much.
Gates belt cured mine, after I had shredded my old chirpy belt because my new alternator came with a one rib thinner pully wheel I didn't notice in time. Rippy Roo! Ferds get death wobble as much or more than anything else. Just watch all the vids on it. Leaf springs do NOT prevent death wobble.
Not leaf sprung ones,
Not a 7.3 I have ever heard of, Even after years of plowing!
Mine quit chirpin with new belt and tensionor
That's a Gates belt. That's all I use
The belt is made by gates not dayco
Yup, this is NOT a Dayco belt.......it is a GATES
can someone post the amazon link?
The link to what?
Mine does that to always has.
I think its on all of them.
I think cool.
these are now made in mexico
It isn’t harmful and not worth the hassle….but if it bugs you then…..😉
TSB could have saved you some years.
I'll give you my 6.7 It doesn't have a chirp.
travcon8 my 6.7 does. It’s a 4th gen also.
@@BikerFail16 Depends on how old the serpentine belt is. And if the fan is hauling ass when I shut it down.
travcon8 brand new belt and the engine is cold. Still does it.
@@BikerFail16 who really cares. Find something else to worry about.
travcon8 oh I’m not worried about it. I was just telling you that it still does it with a new belt and when the fan is not running fast. But who cares, it still pulls my equipment better than any other truck I’ve owned.
