Thanks!!! Your before sounded EXACTLY like what mine is doing, I was getting worried something horrible in the engine was brewing. Going to do this process this week.
@@allencarabajal8989 Haven't got to it, I got into a VW project. It's still on my list. I did a value adjustment, wasn't it. So it's the CP3 or injector I'm thinking. Injector you can disconnect the power to 1, start truck, see if sounds gone. Check em all.
Thanks for this info. I can’t believe it’s been such a hassle to get someone to actually phase the CP3s. Just a helpful tip, leave the motor at top dead, and use channel Locks to gently turn the CP3 instead of the engine. There are stamps 754. Put the 5 at the 9 o clock position and the motor at TDC. This eliminates doing it twice. Not a 30 minute job, maybe the second time and if it’s not hot 😂
Thank you for this information. I have 2014 that's been making the knocking noise for about 2 years and it got progressively worse from 175k miles to 210k. I recently went to larger new injectors with a proper tune and the knock remained the same. I was extremely skeptical of doing what you described here for about a month but with ever other test exhausted i performed i said WTH I'm trying it. I performed this method as described and the knock is GONE. Something else that's strange, is it doesnt start as "aggresive" as it did before. Its like it takes another half turn for it to start but it's a much smoother start. Did i mention the knock is GONE too😊. I'm interested in how long this last but at least i know the source of the issue. Thank you sir!
My truck sounds identical to your before video. Gonna give this a try. The one thing I'm confused on is if you're not loosening the 3 bolts on back of cp3 where is the movement coming from when your pushing the gear back to free it from the engine?
Somewhat confused on this question, I'll have to look but the only thing that needs to be loosened is the nut on the cp3 gear then use a puller tool to pull the gear off, turn the motor 30 degrees torque nut back down and repeat until the noise goes away, I appreciate your comment hope this helps!
@@Jeremy_Teagarden I guess I wasn't sure what was moving to allow you to spin the engine free of the cp3. Sounds like your pulling the gear forward off the cp3 shaft not pushing the cp3 shaft back like I assumed.
Ohhh okay, then yes your are pulling the gear forward off the shaft so the gear is free floating and not grabbing on the splines of the cp3 shaft, sorry about that
Great video man! Just to be clear, you’re just pulling the CP3 gear and turning the engine 60-90 degrees? And you’re rotating the engine clockwise right?
Why do you have to remove the cp3 pulley if the Serpentine belt is removed ? If you rotate the crank pulley then the cp3 pulley isn't rotatating anyway.
I did a bunch of reading and the one thing that came up to much was the CP3 but I wouldn’t try starting it with out the belt, I went and got a vehicle stethoscope and listened around didn’t notice anything so I adjust the CP3 gear. If it doesn’t work try adjusting further it won’t really hurt anything
Dude this is absolutely amazing thank you for sharing this man!! It worked on my 04. Now just gotta figure why it keeps making a random rattle and lopes like it’s cammed. I have no codes a new Mprop new air dog and 4 new injectors. I’m praying it’s not another injector. But if you or anyone’s had this problem please help. It’s getting great Mpg the power seems fine it’s been a very confusing situation lol
@@JR_Diesel No I haven’t figured it out but I have a feeling it’s the cp3. It doesn’t smoke or over fuel at idle and it’s not getting worse, no blow by so I don’t think it’s rods or wrist pin. It only does it at idle, if I turn on high idle, the lite knock goes away.
Of course, No problem! I'm a perfectionist so any noise that doesn't sound right drives me crazy, I'm trying to get to 1000 subscribers hope I get your help!
Youre advancing the pump by disconnecting the cp3 pump gear and turning the motor your changing the piston stroke so when the engine is doing its compression stroke at the same time the CP3 is on its return stroke it doesn't slap making the knocking noise
From what I was told over time the gear on the cp3 pump goes out of sync, the cp3 is synced up with the injectors timing, so it's causes your pump inside to rattle, so your not really changing timing but sync the cp3 with the the injectors. When it's not synced up, it makes a fuel knock noise, but try adjusting it and see if it goes away if not it could be injectors too. Thank you for the comment please subscribe! I'm almost to 400 subs
@@Jeremy_Teagarden My 04 is doing the same. Don't understand why rotating the gear would make a difference . The pump supply's fuel into what they call a common rail , fuel is available to any injector that opens all the time . The pump can't be out of sync. The pump gear is not splined, it 's a press by nut taper fit. Why would the engine need to be at top dead center , you could just rotate the gear as you say 30 degrees or 20 or 50 degrees. I have checked the injectors, rocker arms and valve springs now I guess I'll try the rotating the gear maybe replacing the pump which sounds more likely the problem.
@@stevemustaikis6602the gear lashes back and rattles against the other timing gears and it creates the knock noise. No matter what eventually it will out sync itself again but rotating the gear is easy
Did you notice a power difference? Mine sounds like a minion with a hammer on cocaine under my hood. I have decent power under less that half throttle but more than that is pointless, it's almost like it loses power under full throttle
I definitely notice some, it felt like it wasn't struggling anymore. It didn't feel like I added power per say but felt like I brought it back the where it was before, no more lagging or struggle, just ready to go with I put the pedal down
Definitely let me know how it goes! My truck has never ran better other than transmission issues I'm running into know that I'm guessing is either from my tuner or a bad ground but adjusting the cp3 has been great. Made my engine sound much quieter and has reduced the shake a lot when shutting it off too
Wow! This has been driving me nuts for 3 years. Thank you for actually showing the difference.
Of course! I'm very bad with hearing noises and not fixing it if I can, little things like this drive me crazy lol

Did you rotate the pump clockwise or counter clockwise???
@TreeFeller4Life clockwise, but that should not matter.
@@WH-dr4kq why wouldn’t it matter? Just asking and making sure 100% before I pull this gear right now lol I’ve made it this far….. LOL
@TreeFeller4Life because it is not timed to create pressure.

Facing the front of the truck did you rotate it counter clockwise or clockwise?
He commented on another comment “clockwise”
Hey right on this was very helpful!
Any suggestions on how to get the 1-1/16 nut off mine seems to want to spin with the pump
Would this cause high fuel pressure and or feed back valve issues?

Correct! Then just put the gear back on and torque it then start and see how it sounds! Thank you for the comment subscribe for future videos!
Hey man! My 06 Cummins sounds similar too that knock yours had. I have a video of it on my YT page you think it might be the CP3 ?
Great video, definitely explains the same sound I’ve heard from my truck. How did you get your engine TDC?
Watch videos on doing a valve adjustment they explain it

How do you find top dead center
How do you put it to TDC?
Would the knocking come and go, or was it a constant knock ?
Same thing I’m going through. Mine comes and goes, did you figure it out?
For mine, I'd only really hear it at idle, and slow driving, once I had speed I didn't hear mine.
