Overloaded Container Almost FLIPS my Rotator!

- Overloaded Container Almost FLIPS my Rotator! Could this be the heaviest I've ever lifted off the side? Nope, but definitely up there. I said it was 50,000lb in the video, but these 20' containers are always between 40-50k. In hindsight, this had to be every bit of 60,000lb. I truly regret not using my load cells, but I did not figure it would be this much. The driver stated 30,000lbs over the phone, and like a rookie, I took him for his word and added 10,000lb to be safe.
Just by looking at the chassis, that tells me everything I needed to know. You do not do that kind of damage to a 3 axle chassis by being safe. This was on a super busy day, with all drivers plus Alex out on their own calls. I lifted Big Flipper, our 75ton rotator off the side, so I knew I could handle this container. It was either that, or wait well over an hour on the freeway for a second truck. CHP has jurisdiction over the freeways, so if I did that, I very well could have lost the job.
I go over this in great detail, but despite how bad it might look, my truck was not in any real danger to me. Watch my explanation video towards the end to see why. I already know the armchair quarterbacks will skip all that just to come to the comments and tell me how much I suck LOL.
Either way, the job was super heavy and at the end, I got it off the bad chassis and onto the new one which was only a 2 axle chassis. We didn't get the call to assist after that so that must mean they made it to their destination safe and sound.

I'm impressed that the second driver backed that trailer up beautifully. That's impressive.
Absolutely amazing….
Spot on
I said god dang that was on point. Made the job much easier.
straight-backing into a hole with a foot or two of wiggle room is a requisite of getting a CDL, but that right there was exact to the millimeter!
ditto, presision driving.
i love how he talks to his truck and responds back lol
I have a connection with my truck like that
Why didn't you use the other set of road wheels to help with the lift? I would think it would help equalize to wieght.
As a rotator operator for close to 10 years in New England myself, I can say, its nice to have a call every once in a while that still gets all the juices flowing! Excellent job that most operators would have waited for a second truck. You knew your truck and what it was capable of.
Yes sir! And how interesting, what kind of rotators do you have out there? And how is work, busy? Curious to see if you guys get a lot of rollovers and container work as well
Yea if he had to move it that would have been a different story. Like rotate it a bit. Then I know he would not have done it. Only lift it up then back up the other truck. It would have tipped and just landed on the trailer.
I gotta tell ya, Josh. As a NCCCO certified crane operator, when that container broke completely free and swung away from Hulk and the front wheel of Hulk slid, I could see the lean and the verge of disaster decending on the situation. Butt pucker moment for me, I tell ya. Those outriggers were screamin for mercy!!! Good on ya for not freaking out and getting it all stable enough to continue, while walking the tight rope. I can tell you obviously know your equipment. Great job!
Butt pucker for sure What kind of cranes did you operate? I'm always fascinated how similar yet different rotators vs cranes are. Like I explained though, WORST case scenario the truck wouldn't even pick up the container. It would float to a point where I say nopeeee def not happening. Or once it came off the chassis, it would have just landed on it a bit sideways. Crazy stuff!
@@PepesTowingService I hold current licenses for truck mounted lattice boom and crawler lattice boom, as well as large and fixed cab hydro units. Basically any mobile crane. I used to tow here in SoCal in the late eighties. Now I just drive the transport lowbed, do repairs, set-up, tear down of cranes. I stay current as I often do fill in operator work for some of our regular operators who are on vacation, sick, etc...
@@PepesTowingService I believe they are similar, too. Obviously, with the underlift, and extra recovery winches they are different. That said, the rest of Hulk is literally an overbuilt, very strudy boom truck, with the emphasis on "VERY STURDY". Haha she is a strong girl for sure. Take care, my friend.
@@reevinriggin3570yes but no the boom on your crane is designed to deadlift lift vertically and move or swing his boom is designed to do that but also drag and pull in weird ways with angles that will flip your crane or buckle the boom well before his rotator will (if you were same wll for wll on both) there both great tools just very much designed to do very different jobs in very different ways with drastically different stresses
@@PepesTowingServiceI agree with you based on the differences between a crane and a rotating wrecker but a good wind in the right directions between the chassis swap could’ve been a serious problem it’s never the normal everyday situation that ends in disaster that said you can do what you want with your tools
Pepe's is one of the true icons of SoCal highway all-stars. When you need a tow, call AAA. When you need a miracle, you call Pepe's.
What a super sick comment, I’m pinning this!

"This looks crazy, but this ain't my first rodeo..." Words that instantly put me at ease.
Thank you for explaining the differences in the two trucks
Glad you enjoyed! I threw that in there just to clear things up for those that aren’t in the industry.
@@PepesTowingService i'm in the trucking side of the industry. I have been now for 48 years. I've been towed a couple times but that's as close to it as I get.
I love watching the work of professionals like these guys. That second truck driver had that trailer positioned so perfectly on only one attempt, it was unbelievable!
That took some balls but also shows your experience and confidence in your abilities and also Hulks great job Josh
Thanks! Trust, I always say I make it look easy but even a “simple” container lift like this can be super dangerous and heavy. Like you say, it’s about experience and knowing what you’re capable of.
@@PepesTowingService Amazing how many drivers "Fudge" their load weights when the proverbial hits the fan. Paperwork needs to be checked more dilligently and fines increased to deter the cowboys.
Jeffrey was so impressed, he didn't even blink.😅
You should put a Jeffrey eyewitness cam
He’s a real professional 😂😂😂😂😂😂
That truck is a beast Josh. Watching the truck bounce had me biting my nails.
Nail bitter for sure, Hulk didn't want to be shown up by Flipper lol.
Life goals is to backup right on the money like that guy. Impressive.
When you explained that you had tested the lifting capacity of "hulk" by lifting "big flipper" beforehand, that is a good way of knowing that, in a pinch, "hulk" can lift the weight in question and help you keep your reputation with the police agencies involved intact, especially when the travel time is a factor. If I were driving the replacement tractor-trailer, I would have stayed right in the seat upon arrival and have been ready to move the unit at that moment's notice.
Yup, I’m ALWAYS practicing and learning even when it’s slow. It’s the best way to truly know what your equipment is capable of and in an emergency situation like this, is invaluable.
“first Rodeo” is just another way of saying “Ya, I know” !
Love it when the guys say it, “ya, I Know” !
it's not my first rodeo is the saying
Hulk had Jeffery and I worried for a second there. I saw him grimace!! Took some cojones, Josh. You sure know your truck.
Jeffrey has seen enough to know it was under control
Experts at work: Safety, Security, Precision, Practicality
Good explaining Josh on “The Laws of Physics.” Not too many drivers understand that. I drive for VONS/Albertsons (Nice video and save btw a few months ago on the 5 fwy) and run into a lot of drivers that shouldn’t be driving. Unfortunately, lack of common sense and logic have gone out the window. All drivers should know the weight limits on what they are hauling. Nice save Josh! 👍🏼😎
Do you work out of the Brea/OC terminal? The Vons rollover we did recently went back to there. Crazy job. And thank you!
Irvine yard.
@@ureimixer6646 Whoops I said Brea when I meant Irvine, that’s the one!
Josh great job! It’s awesome when you know what your equipment can handle, good thing you had Jeffries help! Thanks for sharing! Kevin
Container driver is a good driver.
The first or second
@@PepesTowingService second; The first overloaded his trailer.
Like a lot of containers.😜🤪@@legend7ify
Hey Josh,
That's my new tee you just sent me. Yea, it looks fantastic. Thank you!!

Awesome!! Rock it proud, hope it fits well too!
I think Hulk kind of likes living on the edge😊😊😊. Always enjoy the technical info!!
100000%! You can't drive a truck named Hulk without doing Hulk things
Hulk earning his keep under the expert control of Josh.
Hulk showing Alex he’ll have no problem leaving Big Flipper lol
Dude you walked in and took control and started laying out a plan of action with complete conviction
I’m never one to back down from a job
Last time we saw Hulk tilted like that was the Tipped Container Forklift job you had to take offline. Shame they got a prissy about it
Damnnnn you're an OG. To this day that was one of my favorite jobs!! I'm so mad they had me take it down for "security" reasons since it was a chemical plant. Now you got me curious, I wonder if I can reupload that video now and just blur out as much as I can
@@PepesTowingService I would love to see that if you can
Hulk: “Ya, I Know!”
Josh your truck is powerful and also outriggers they're massive. NICE JOB and explanation.
Thanks! The outriggers will be even more massive soon enough.
That was one scary lift Josh, seeing Hulk tipping like that had me on the edge of my chair hoping it wouldn't tip over, it was diffenetly at its max.
I can imagine how crazy this looks to you guys. Truth be told even though I knew I could do it and have seen it, it still gives me an adrenaline rush
@@PepesTowingService I know i know you know your truck and what it is capable handling and you are very cautious person. Hey Josh, what do you think that container really weighed?
I love how you push your equipment right to the edge. Go hard,or go home!
You know it!
Nice job Josh, good to see your knowledge demonstrated. Go Geoffrey!
Fair play! Fair play! Fellow operator in UK! 🇬🇧 all about knowing your capabilities and she was right on that fine line 💪 GDB
The 2nd driver deserves all the credit. The 1st driver didn't secure his load correctly & tow truck driver full of himself. The truck did all the work.
You make it look easy, that trucker nearly backed that thing right into the spot. Testing that Rotator.
Best recovery channel on TH-cam hands down 💯🇺🇲👍🏻
I might not reply or read as many comments (hard when you get hundreds lol) but mannn I do appreciate these ones! Thank you!
Wow! Your truck had a scary twist with all the driver side drive wheels off the road! Mega Kudos!
Body roll is expected since it’s just one frame like I mentioned on top of having the shorter rear outrigger.
Josh, you da man. LOL You know your stuff and your equipment for sure but I've never been so glad to see buddy line up the trailer quickly and all 4 pins lock up without any more drama. Thank you for keeping me on a spell-bound ride. And that's coming from a guy that regularly had chains on truck, trailer and steering axles while navigating resource road switchbacks after it rained on top of the compact snow and ice. Well done sir!
I bet you got some stories yourself with that resume! Super happy you enjoyed this one, appreciate the kind words!
Enjoy your videos. Really like how you explain the rig etc. thanks for sharing. 👍🏼
And thank you for watching!
That was an impressive lift. I was worried seeing your rotator leaning like it was, but, dang, you pulled it off!
Mr Josh Thst had me on the edge of my seat. Thanks for sharing and stay safe.
Glad to keep you entertained! Be safe as well brotha
Lot of tension on this job. I knew you would be successful but was unsure how things would shake out. There ain't no school like experience. Thanks for the video and while I am thinking about it, it looks like Jeffery got a facial and hair stylizing.
Very true, I like to test my truck even when I’m not on a job just so I know what it’s capable of and how far I can push it if I have to. And LOL you have a great eye. Alex pressure washed him recently.
Never take a the word of a driver… always look at the paperwork to know the exact contents of the container
You would be SHOCKED how often they have 0 paperwork and if they do how often it’s wrong
Good job, Josh!!!
I always enjoy watching experts within their trade work their unique blend of skill, experience and magic. Super interesting and cool to see. You’re great at this. New sub!
I hope Hulk got a trip to the rotator chiropractor to work that wicked twist out of his poor back frame. LOL.
Hulk is a champ and can take it 🦾
WHAT AN AMAZING WORK!! 👏 Have to give it up as well for the 2nd driver that line it up with the container. RIGHT ON THE MONEY
Very close, but he made Hulk flex extra hard to make me lift higher and boom down to line up the front locks. All in a day’s work!
Yes!! new Pepe Upload on this lazy Father’s Day weekend.
Not a lot of overhead room with that sign. Definitely put the lean on your truck. Good job Josh!
Great video, it wasn't ugly seeing Hulk like that, worrying but not scary, as sometimes you make it look easier than it clearly is. This video demonstrates the weight you are dealing with better than anything
Poor hulk! Hope you sprang for the under-carriage wash as a treat! lol
It's a good thing you have Jeffrie to supervise these big jobs! .....Great video BTW.
Great video and great explanation!! Thank you for educating us.
That is freakin nuts!
Thanks for the explaining between the trucks. Hope you can get your new truck soon !!

Josh, I've seen your Dad push his truck! No doubt you both know exactly what you're doing... otherwise you wouldn't risk it. Superb job as always! #yaiknow 😂
My dad would see this and say "that's all?"
Seems like the first chassis was wrong one with that much weight? As far as Josh 😎 you definitely work cool under pressure Brother! Great job! Best channel for heavy recovery. Any person starting out in the industry can learn so much from Josh and Alex and the whole Pepe’s organization! 💪😎👍
I have theories but am no expert when it comes to the transport business. The driver did mentioned that his chassis was already messed up lol. Not sure who is right but either way thank you!
if the driver said that it was messed up before then that should fall on him because he has the choice to refuse unsafe equipment. The container should have been transferred to a different chassis if there was a problem with the one he had. Just my opinion I could be wrong
Amazing backing job by the second driver. Sure made your job quicker and safer. Fantastic job knowing your equipment's capabilities and getting 'er done.
I was drawn to this video because I drive heavy machinery, and i litteraly got lost in various parts. but very facinating
Can't wait until we see the new truck!!
Who knows when it will be here now with this crazy chassis shortage
As a european crane operator, i can only say "holy shit there are many red flags".. Shit like that is a total no go in europe..
You speak for the entirety of Europe? That's crazy you must be super important and famous with that much authority
@@PepesTowingService lol, no need to get snappy, mate. Just saying we got laws that prevent us from doing stuff like that. Here you wouldn’t be in the business for long if you pulled these stunts.
And just a question, out of curiosity. On my truck the wheels need to touch the ground, cause they act like ballast. Is it not the same way on yours?
@@Flux2734I've seen this behaviour often in the USA. Safety is not a concern, until there is a problem.
I've seen guys unloading a 45.000 kg piece of equipment with an oilfield bedtruck at the back and a picker truck at the front, "Texas style". The bedtruck flipped with the load, damaging the trailer on which it was loaded.

That was super scary, and I'm just watching a video! Those outriggers were strained to the limit! Left wheels off the ground! And super props to that second driver for lining up his trailer to the container!
Hulk 3 wheel motion👌🏼
No switches required
It's a good thing Jeffreys head was there to help hold the truck down!
Little known fact Jeffrey is super dense and is a counter weight
So that means the new truck will not have an underlift, or is that just gonna be set up differently?
Nope, I will. Google “knee boom underlift."
@PepesTowingService IC, you're not going to have all that storage up top like you do now, but a more stable unit. Always trade offs.
I like how you answered the phone "hold on" haha. Also cant wait to see the dual H beam outrigger on your new 50 ton rotator. nice work josh.

3. Creepy Jeffrey doing a great job supervising 🙌🙌🙌
4. I enjoy the explanations!!! I'm a weirdo, apparently!🤪
5. Back to the safety of my couch now! Carry on Josh!!!🤣🤣🤣
If that would've happened around here, the state highway patrol would have requested their commercial vehicle inspectors to come out and weigh that truck to see just how overweight it was..... and they would have written every ticket possible including overweight tickets to the driver. There's no way the truck would've just drove away, like it did in this video, without suffering some consequences from the CVI. Our state LOVES to write commercial vehicle tickets ANY chance they get. Hell, most of our local Police Departments each have one or two officers who can also enforce commercial vehicle laws and write commercial vehicle tickets, not just the state highway patrol. The politicians around here just can't turn down the incredible revenue that is generated from commercial vehicle tickets and fines.
That is a growing trend in politics right now. You stand correct, the enforcement of commercial vehicles and fines is wickedly expensive and generates big money for cities, counties, and states here in the US.
Amazing work !! Nice to see a pro in action !
Way to go vato....huevos....
I was worried for Hulk for a second 😱 . Josh you know your stuff, and I like the way you explain it for the simple laymen/woman the technical stuff . Keep up the Great Work . Still miss Sunny Cali 🥰
Funny....going to Disneyland after this. Like your shirt Josh. I like designs / Logos on the back of shirts, then a logo on front and/or sleeve. Looking forward Hulk 2.0
I can't believe you, young man. But you are a very skilled operator for your young age.
I’m sure those outriggers received some sort of damage during this lift having this kind of lean on them.
Go flipper and baby flipper! 😊 All good!! He good and your truck! The truck can handle it!!
Ya just gotta wonder HOW HEAVY that the CAN really was 😮😮😮😮
I said 50k in the video but NO WAY. I've done a 45,000lb cargo loader off the side and didn't even float. Granted I was a bit more extended here, but I'm going to say 60,000lb. Not truly uncommon for these 20' cans, I've seen it.
My body was hurting watching Hulk twist like that ! Great going Hulk !
That was the best pick up ive seen a place called Vance in northwest Indiana used to pickup derailed train engines that was amazing, keep up the great work
Hulk performed the job and did Flawlessly. Good job Josh
Nothing broken!! Great bro!!

That was some lift Josh....handled very professionaly👏👏👏👏
Josh you did a great job pushing the limits of the rotator. Shredder could have done that back in the day before video was invented
Yep... overloaded containers... nuthin new ! Same problems in Portland... no weighmasters in Portland area since about 2010...
WOW! Awesome video Josh! Very interesting with your commentary 👌
Hulk you're amazing thank you for sharing 🎉😮😅
Awesome video
Curious how often do you replace the slings? Do they gave a working life before they should be replaced or juat when they start to show wear?
As heavy as we lift, we don't exceed the working load limits of our slings. They'll last you tons of years. But if they come in contact with anything jagged or show signs of wear, we replace them. I just text Thad Bailey from Bailey's Tow Accessories and give him my order and get a new set ASAP
@@PepesTowingService thank you for the reply! Love your channel and what you guys do!
Ya, you DO know the limitations. Very impressive work on that recovery. I wonder what was in the container to make it so heavy, and are you allowed to demand to know first?
Drivers are supposed to carry their shipping papers, manifest, carriers's certificate, plus others but some of the times it's non-existent. How they say ? " Deal with it".
It was full of fat chicks. Or possibly a singular fat chick.
Man, I was soooooo nervous watching this, and how much Hulk was leaning! Man great job young man
How thin & cheap are those skels if a triax can't hold a 22 tonne container without buckling. Good tri axle should handle 33 tonne (72,000lb) payload
Being that this is in Anaheim it is likely full of tile or granite slabs. Tile row, State College Blvd, is not far from there.
Very very good guess. A good chunk of these super heavy 20' containers have been exactly that. We have one at my yard right now full of tile that flipped.
Heading to Disneyland next makes sense. Whoever thought to place a container that heavily overloaded onto that chassis was obviously already in fantasyland.
My boii, I’m more impressed by you climbing the trailer and shipping container 😂
Good job man!
As a nobody on TH-cam I gotta tell ya you done did a great job
Great videos , and what a sweeeeeet rig you have there, awesome job, you’d make a a good teacher for someone who would want to learn to do this.
