In this helpful video, Dr. Priyanka Singh shows you how to prevent genetic diabetes (or the onset of diabetes in individuals with a genetic predisposition). Are you worried about genetic diabetes? Worry not; this video will provide you with a detailed breakdown of the steps you can take immediately to prevent and manage the risk of diabetes, especially if you have a family history of diabetes. Watch now to learn more.
If you have diabetes in your family, you can prevent it by following specific preventive measures:
Managing your weight within your BMI (body mass index) is essential, which can be achieved through regular exercise, proper diet, and reducing belly fat. Studies show that fat around the belly area produces hormones and compounds that reduce insulin sensitivity, leading to higher sugar levels.
Maintain a balanced diet. It is essential to include whole fruits, whole grains, lean protein, and good fats, with less carbohydrates and more protein. Nuts should be consumed in moderation, and fish, chicken, and egg whites can be added to lean protein sources. Avoid processed food and high-sugar foods, as they can increase the risk of developing diabetes.
Managing stress is crucial as it releases stress hormones, such as cortisol, which can increase sugar levels in the body. If stress is not managed well, the possibility of developing diabetes is significantly reduced.
Regular exercise, whether weight training or yoga, is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity helps the body convert food into glucose, which is used as energy when it enters the bloodstream.
If you have an addiction, such as alcohol or smoking, quit immediately. If you are a chronic alcoholic or smoker, gradually taper down your consumption to reduce toxins in your body. This will help reduce the chances of metabolic disorders.
Adults should also follow routine check-ups. Today's generation often does not go for routine check-ups because they cannot see any symptoms. However, chronic illnesses like diabetes can develop slowly in the body without giving any symptoms, making it difficult to detect them. If there is a family history of diabetes in your family, it is recommended to get your HbA1c tested every three months. Routine check-ups can be done every six months if there is no family history.
Lastly, it is essential to get adequate sleep, as lack of sleep can cause more hunger and eating at night, which is when your sugar levels spike more if you eat.
By following these key points, you can prevent diabetes from entering your body and living a healthier life.
