    MGS5 is a hard game to love, for every step forward in improving what came before, there were 10 steps back in what they chose to sacrifice to achieve it.
    I've compiled all my ramblings into one little video so I can help others and myself understand how I truly feel about the last mainline entry.

      On the fan service thing, I agree. They took an amazingly.deep character, who was given an incredible performance, and made a joke of her with the fan service. Kojima said "there is a very good reason for it and once you know why she wears that you will feel ashamed." No tf I didn't feel ashamed at all. In fact, everything he said there sounds absolutely stupid as fuck. It makes sense sure, but the whole thing is stupid af. However, thats not NEAR AS BAD as the whole shit with the Beauty n Beast unit. That shit was just disgusting.

    Exactly how I feel about MGSV. Gameplay-wise, when taking missions in isolation, it is the best sandbox gaming has to offer. Unfortunately, these missions aren't woven together tightly enough to complement the story it was trying to tell. Not to mention that you needed to repeat missions toward the end of the game which didn't make sense and it just solidified the suspicion that the game was unfinished and the team just needed to pad content. It was a messy and unsatisfying experience that didn't quite tie in the events of MGS3 to the events of the creation of Outer Heaven that Solid Snake had to infiltrate. I'd say the perfect MGS game would be a game that has the story-telling of MGS3, but with the controls and level design of MGS5.

      Well if you didn’t notice in the ending when Venom punches the glass the diamond dog logo changes to the logo of Outer Heaven which tells me that the last snake we got to play as is the very first final boss of the metal gear series

    I imagine losing your soldiers, losing your motherbase, losing your best friend, getting tortured by Russians, and losing 2 limbs has something to do with Kaz not being comic relief anymore.

      My point wasn't that Kaz isn't comic relief in Phantom Pain. He should be way more serious and broken, but all of his personality was sacrificed so that he can spout terrible lines about revenge and phantom pain nearly every moment he's on screen. He's not a character in MGS5, he's just a prop used to portray the game's themes in a very literal way.

    I hate talking about this game cause so many think the unfinished nature was intentional cause of the title of the game. It was not. When we got the details over how Kojima and his team were treated it’s clear as day the game ended the way it did cause Konami wanted it out the door after years of development. Hell Geoff from the VGA’s said Kojima told him he was not allowed to communicate or see his team and had to speak to them via a 3rd party while he was not in the room. The retcons this game introduce as well hurt the story across the franchise then explains things or coming close to the last connecting chapter of Metal Gear saga that was advertised. Another piece of proof that the unfinished nature was not intended is the novelization of the game in Japan had a far more fleshed out plot.

      Yea, it definitely sucks that we never got to see Mother Bases' transition into Outer Heaven, only a small glimpse of the logo at during the end cut scene when venom punches the mirror.

    Even for an unfinished game, there is still so much content and cool gameplay compared to games now. I just started my first playthru and am loving it lol. So much fun running up in bases, headshotting surprised guards. Even failing a mission and trying a new way to get it done is so satisfying.

    For the helicopter argument. I realize that you can just exit the mission by ground level. You don’t have to leave by chopper every time. This will make it so you never have to deal with the helicopter scene in between each mission. That’s how I played the game

    I share a lot of similar feelings for MGSV. I remember on my first playthrough, feeling a bit disheartened that the story just wasn't gripping me like previous entries in the series. But the game sure makes up for it in the gameplay.
    I find myself dipping into MGSV a lot, just to play a couple of main and side ops, to quench that thirst for stealth gameplay.
    Regarding Venom Snake, the character continues to grow on me over time. I hated the twist ending at first, as I really just wanted to play as Big Boss. But the more I process it, the more I like the idea and feel for the character.
    Another great video though, I love hearing other people's takes on MGS. I know you're trying to avoid becoming an MGS channel, but you're putting out some great stuff 👍

      I didn't expect us to share such similar feelings on the game. I haven't been keeping up with MGS5 opinions as of late so I thought maybe most fans might have warmed up to it like MGS2. I thought I would to, which made it all the most disappointing when I replayed the story and was even more frustrated.
      Glad to hear the love for Venom Snake, I didn't realise how much character is actually there in him if you pay attention.
      I've been high on MGS since the delta trailer so I had to get all my feelings out. MGS is always my top franchise so I'll definitely keep going back to make some more videos every now and again.

    It might seem like a weird nitpick but I really miss the way all previous games had you hold your weapons/equipment as you have them equipped with specific idle and walk animations whereas in Phantom Pain you'll just emediately holster your weapon unless you hold your aim. I mean, tactically, it doesn't make sense that you just holster your pistol moments before you need it! And I don't care if youre a quicker draw than Ocelot, that just isn't good gun-manners 😂
    And Snake hugging the wall with his Soccom is iconically Metal Gear to me and I just miss having that. Is it only me? 😅
    I still loved playing MGSV and put so many hours into it! I agree with a lot talked about in the vid, especially the chopper travelling and my warming up to Venom

    It was pretty funny to hear those closing thoughts, because I found the video very well put together. Really eloquent and thought-provoking, and for me personally, a relatable summary of The Phantom Pain's strenths and shortcomings. Subbed :)

    Great video. The main issue with TPP for me is that the twist happens and then the game just... ends. They do absolutely nothing with the twist and I would have loved to see Big Boss' story from the moment he left on that motorcycle until 1995. He did so many cool things during those 11 years. We would also probably see his falling out with Venom at some point. Such wasted potential... Maybe in a hypothetical "MGS6"?
    Time will tell.

    I feel the same way about MGSV, from Kaz's unnatural dialogue to Chico's missing potential storyline. By the end of the story, it really made me question the entire lore of the entire saga. 30 years and the legendary Big Boss I knew had a body double? I have issues with Kojima retconning Skull Face into Operation Snake Eater, knowing how much Major Zero stressed to Snake that it was a solo sneaking mission and how much the FOX unit depended on him. Even as a mere clean-up unit, it bothers me. But I know Kojima is about themes in each of his game, and he isn't afraid to retcon or alter the story to express his idea or theme for the particular game.
    A lot of people see Venom Snake as his own character, but I can't accept that. To me he is a slightly altered Naked Snake, but the same character. He is obviously confused about his identity at first, but comes more into his own in Chapter 2 in line with Big Boss. I don't see him as an avatar or his own character, just Big Boss. I guess I was disappointed after watching the trailers multiple times, expecting Big Boss's "downfall." I couldn't and still can't expect a retconned medic character, much like Abby's father in The Last of Us. What I'm saying is I believe Big Boss (John) would've made pretty much the same decisions as Venom had he been in that situation.
    I still love the game and play FOB to this day, sneaking into high level (level 78) bases and reaching the core stealthily. If I leave a wormhole, I get retaliations from high-level FOBs that have the highest of the highest gear in the game, so they're pretty OP. So it's very much still active, especially if you form relationships with other players in the game so you can defend their bases. It's a very unique multiplayer experience, and I love it.

      @@TheFoxCoops Metal Gear. In 1987 Big Boss was the final boss of the game. But it was actually his body double, and you fight the real Big Boss in the next game. Metal gear 2. The idea has been around since 1987.

      No it hasn't. It was retconned in by Kojima in MGSV. It was never an actual thing when the game released, we were led to believe Big Boss survived and evacuated Outer Heaven and we fought him again in Metal Gear 2. Even in MGS4 before the whole retcon nonsense, Big Boss says to Solid Snake that he was beaten by him two times earlier and that day would mark the third (due to FOXDIE). Not sure where you got your information from.@@reredrumuoy

    The phantom pain truly is a phantom pain...
    I love MGSV because it perfectly represents the time period and the characters in it.
    We are witnessing events in a series that should have died and ended in MGS4, and the only way both venom and the player can cope with this is by becoming the phantom of Big Boss. Playing 80s music on our IDroid as we murder our way through missions, extracting people, wreaking havoc, while inside mother base we do our best to help the world in the most brutal way. Playing into Big Boss's plans for the future but doing it in our own way so that we don't lose ourselves even if we don't actually control anything in the world, playing as actors in someone else's greater plan.

However I'm no reviewer and don't want to be, I just like to express love for games or go into how they make me feel so I'll have to find a particular angle to approach Hitman.

    I can't ever really go back to playing this on the PS4. The PC version has so many mods. One which allows you to skip the helicopter rides and even use a helicopter to travel to other parts of the map. But the best part being the reduction of grinding and adding David Hayters voice as well as the real Big Boss skin and the real Outer Heaven symbol.

    The game was great the problem is it does show it's incomplete. They just pieced them together what they had. Venom snake hardly said anything Huey had more lines. That car ride at mission 30 felt awkward. No banter on the codec and no insects or snakes in the game. Only capture them via trap cages. Not even shooting range or room for snake. Those temporary shower spots shows they did have an idea. I think they re used those idea on death stranding. The game had so much potential.

      @@kharngotrekson1726 that was the same in peace walker it had tapes but there were banter in codec sacrificing the scenes and graphics due to it being on handheld. Even with tapes Huey had more lines than Venom Snake that includes Skull Face. Miller and Ocelot had the most lines.

That's nothing compared to the inferior psp game. The whole point of shooting range as its name you are on a set distance to shoot the targets and not that you can run around and shoot.

    Phantom pain is an ambitious game made by Mr. Kojima who wanted to make the best game ever, but Konami's publisher pulled the plug on the project, in the middle of the project. and released it half-finished.

      It's not always the evil evil big company that is at fault. Even Kojimbro can't just do whatever he wants. He was still an employee and asked for more and more money.       Konami went as far as to install cameras to make sure no one even brought it up, they also disrespected the creature of the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise after his death, not to mention they fired the creators of Castlevania and sued them when they made there own original vampire game,

    I've been looking into potentially getting it, but it's hard to decide. I don't think I'd be too invested in the story, so it's just the gameplay I'm interested in really, but I just have no idea what the game plays like. hoping this vid can give me a reason to get it

      Go for it. Frankly it's easy to find it for cheap nowadays. Personally, I'd recommend the definitive experience bundle.

    because of the way Metal Gear Solid 5 is made, if you haven't listened to all the tapes, you can't really say you've got a proper view of the story. It's stupid and annoying, but the story exposition in the tapes itself isn't bad, and you get to listen and acquaint yourself with Kiefer Sutherlands rendition of Venom Snake more.

    MGSV is one of the best games ever made with one of the worst stories ever written. This game was supposed to be the bridge between Peace Walker and Metal Gear. In the after credits of Peace Walker, Big Boss gives a speech and says "This is Outer Heaven". MGSV should have shown us how everything we know in the later games came to be. Instead of Mother Base being out in the middle of the ocean again like in Peace Walker, it should have been in South Africa and called Outer Heaven. We should have seen Big Boss train Sniper Wolf and Frank Jaeger, and develop the Metal Gear TX-55 Solid Snake destroys in Metal Gear.
    No "Venom Snake". No dumb plot twist which makes the whole game feel pointless. Just a good story filling in the gaps.
    I know that Portable Ops technically showed Frank Jaeger and Campbell and the establishment of Foxhound, but I think it would have made sense to retcon that game and show those events in more detail in MGSV.

    I am in the same situation as yours. Gameplay-wise this game is the best in the series, but story-wise, it's by far the weakest. In complete antithesis with what came before. Honestly, in my case the love far surpasses the disappointment. Awesome video, keep em coming

    Great video totally agree the game play is great but yah the story not there also the fact that grey fox is not in the game is a crime he so should have been ocelot part also because of this games retconning of the lore you could big boss is cypher now zero been out of the picture for nearly 10 years before the game even begins a good name for this game would've been War of the Phantoms

    Hot take i know , but to me, the biggest problem with Mgs 5 is.. . .Hideo Kojima. I came to this understanding after Death Stranding

      You captured the experience of playing MGSV so well.
      The gameplay is just so too fcking top tier, but it hurts so much that the story falls short.
      However some might argue that it might be the point (or part of it).
      Kojima did confirmed that, despite Mission 51 being scrapped, MGSV story is completed and it’s not because of it was rushed.

      Hence, Micheal Saba in his MGSV video essay argues that the story ended and falls short to leave us a PHANTOM PAIN that is as painful as the main cast in MGSV.
      I think we MGS fans all felt it for the game. Such amazing gameplay, yet the pain of not so good end for the story lingers.
      We tried to screamed and demanded Konami to let Kojima complete his vision, and finish Mission 51 as well as the Final Chapter.
      Hoping for the pain to go away. But to Kojima, he already finished it.
      We tried to alleviate the pain that wasn’t even there.
      That phantom pain still haunts me till this day, every time I think of MGSV.
      Such an amazing game, but why does the story had to suck so badddd and why can’t we just have Mission 51 😭😭😭😭

    This was something of false advertising. It was promised to be the story of how BB became a villain. But what we got was a spin off with a body double.

      I agree about the false advertising but at this point Big Boss pretty much is a villain or at least morally grey. Exploiting the loyalty of a brainwashed body double and letting him take the fall for his image while he forms his fortress in secret is pretty messed up.

      @@dead_end_alley I don't disagree. But the fact that Kojima portrayed that in such a subtle way is piss weak. The 3rd act of a story like that should be centred around the villain(BB) revealing his motivation and justification for his actions. I don't think Kojima was ever going to do that in MGSV. He probably thought he would still have the chance to make the real Outer Heaven game pitting BB vs Solid on current hardware. Then Konami fired him. Fans were begging for the Solid vs BB story to be made to complete the timeline. Kojima should've done it. I love MGS but Kojima is beyond frustrating as a creator.

      The biggest act of “villainy” by Naked Snake was going along with Zeroes plan to create a hynogogic copy of him with his most trusted and loyal soldier, “Ahab.” That is unevuivocally a villain’s choice and really underscores the Big Boss we knew from MG2:SS. Now, whether or not he’s forgiven with the apology to Solid Snake in the Epilogue of MGS4-that’s a question for the ages…

      Re: Venom. Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him well. My own trauma has caused to bond with Venoms character in a completely different way than others. Still, I agree, he would probably have started the mutiny and maybe that’s why Big Boss directed Solid Snake to kill Venom in MG1. Then in hubris, BB decides he can best SS, only to be destroyed in battle-later realizing his crimes against humanity but still believing deep down, “This is good, isn’t it?”

      He kidnapped a man, had the man disfigured to look like him, stole his identity, used child soliders and not to mention sacrificed an entire hospital despite knowing a week in advanced that they were about to be attacked.
      We saw first hand how it feels like to be one of big boss's own subordinates, the fall really started in peace walker when he had a child solider work for him, and buit a nuke,

    I honestly kinda hate MGS5 nowadays because Kojima essentially sold us a lie. He knew exactly what the fanbase wanted (a dark game where we saw the fall of Big Boss and showing the horrors of war, the rise of Outer Heaven and finally completing the transiion of Big Boss from Hero to the villain of Outer Heaven... And he made some of the best marketing / video game trailers ever created to show us this, with particular mention to the 2014 "Nuclear" trailer showing everything from big boss covered in boss waking alonsides burned bodies of children , Big Boss covered in blood screaming in agony, him shooting childen in cages, torturing his own men, culminating with him shooting some of his own men in the head as he rode with Skullface towards a Metal Gear, strongly hinting that Big Boss would fall so deeply into revenge he would be willing to team up and work with his enemy to take down Cypher. Finally we would get the final piece of the puzzle , our "Revenge of the Sith" where we see Naked Snake truly become Big Boss and forming Outer Heaven at last.
    Then we get the game it it's this crappy, nonsensical mess of a story about Vocal Cord Parasites, a girl that breathes through her skin, a medic brainwashed to be a Big Boss body double while in a coma, it doesn't even really show the rise of outer heaven, most of the violent acts in the trailers were misdirection (like he was shooting the patdlock and not the children in cages, he never worked with Skullface, etc)... All in all, it was another filler game that barely moved the Big Boss plotline forward , and after Portable Ops and Peace Walker, I personnaly was super angry to have yet another filler game that didn't show the Rise of Foxhound and Outer Heaven and how Big Boss became the insane power-hungry dictator that Solid Snake had to take out in MG1. But mostly , it was the Medic Snake B.S that really pissed me off to no end... It was a stupid, badly written plot that was pretty embarassing even by MGS's often questionnable standards, and it really just made the entire game pointless. I came here to see Big Boss's fall from grace, and I didn't even get to see or play the guy... F u Kojima.
    And the fact he got Kicked out of Konami and that now we will never have a proper conclusion to the Big Boss arc pisses me even more. He had the perfect gameplay ,engine and tech to make this game his best one and fully satisfy the fanbase, yet he chose to betray us at every turn, giving us one of the worse story in the entire franchise and devolving into ridiculous vocal cord parasites, skullface with a Kato mask trying to destroy the world whille spouting nonsense like such a lust for revenge and major , I'MMMM BURNINNNNNG UPPPPPP !!!... Garbage writing. And you can't even claim he didn't know what we wanted , because he marketed the game perfectly , knowing full well people would get hyped by the darker tone and showcase of the horrors of war. If the game was even 5% as good as the trailers, it would be the best game ever, but everything in those trailers is misdirection put out of context to trick us into a narrative of a somber and intelligent game about the horrors of war and the toll it takes on warriors such as Snake.
    Honestly, just like MGS4 was a mess of garbled themes, improbable plot twists and retcons, this game failed to keep it simple and interesting. MGS1 was great because it was deep down a very simple story, with compelling characters and just enough twists to stay believable, plus it managed to elevate the pretty bare bone story of the MSX games into it's own series mythology. MGS2 was a hot mess of a game that betrayed all our expectations, and I'm pretty ambivalent about it, but at least it hit very deep themes like information control in the media and how AI will be used to control the masses in a world where we drown in information and are no longer able to tell fiction for reality , somethnng that was ahead of it's time and saves it from being a total mess of a game... Then Kojima finally went back to his roots, offering a great , character driven story in MGS3 that had it's twists, but mostly focused on a set of compelling characters in a gameplay focused game that ticked all the right boxes, only to revert back to a nonsensical, pretentious and overly long mess of style over substance with MGS4... A bloated mess of a game that's in dire need of an editor to trim the fat and give us actual gameplay.

    Imo I just could never get on with this game. While the gameplay is good, the repetitive missions made it almost become a chore and the story in parts almost felt more like a parody of MGS rather than MGS title imo anyways.
    I might revisit it but I ain't so sure I can bring myself to do that.
    On top of that I feel like the franchise should've ended with MGS4 or at the very least Peace Walker.

    Mgsv had good gameplay but the world and its story is empty and boring. Its why i dont like open world. The old
    Mgs games gave enough freedom with a tight area that is well designed.
    Although i still thi k the stealth system of camoflauge was far better in mgs 3

    I am the biggest hypocrite when it comes to this game. I love it, but I also hate it. The story is awesome, when you come to grips with the fact that its actually dog shit. The main issue with the storytelling is HOW they do it. There are 4,370 tapes practically, and ALL the most important dialogue happens there. Its a literal 2 or so hours worth of content hidden in these stupid fuckin tapes. The main gripe, is when tf do these super important conversations happen, and why the actual fuck do we not see ANY of them. I love the idea of Venom Snake, but also fuck this new goober, I wanna play as Big Boss, but I also really like Venom. But fuck him, he's cool. Oh man I am too conflicted with him. Another super huge issue is the way the game just, ends. Sure it has 3 endings, but none of them actually feel like an ending. The story did not end, the game did not end, it just fuckin stopped. But the gameplay is literally the best thing since sliced bread. Easily the best stealth action gameplay ever.
    May be a hot take, but hiring Keifer was completely pointless. Venom is literally just a stone-faced, monotone robot. Keifer as Big Boss had actual personality, but Venom was garbo. Imo, Stefanie as quiet gave such a superior performance compared to keifer. Sure John is the original Big Boss, but imo, Venom is Big Boss too. Like John said "we are both Big Boss. No, he is the 2 of us together." But John takes the background role as BB, while Venom is out there showing the world just who Big Boss is. Hell, after Zanzibar he is in a coma for yeeears until David kills GW and the Patriot AIs. So while John may be the original Big Boss, Venom is the biggest Big Boss.

    I love MGS story/franchise but most of the time I hate the gameplay of the older game and I prefer watching the story over a video youtube than playing the game myself.
    MGS 5 make me love playing this game! Gameplay wise it is so solid! the story is kind of ok, but did not reach that level the other games could gave me for the lack of script, the fact Venom snake got nothing to say that could shake me except for one moment maybe when he pour ashes on his face... but even this scene was ''ok'' for a mgs scene. Although, there is few things that make me despise this game... 1st, the mission a quiet exit... what the fuck Kojima was thinking of pulling tons of tanks in a sneaking mission? 2nd, those repetitive mission that repeat themself ocver and over and over just at different place. ''Extract the skilled soldier 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, ok I get it!''

    I love the game I just hate any part that has the parasite squad or zombie enemies, I get there's a good story reason but it dampens the gameplay alot when like when your told to head back to the killer bee missile launcher site and have to take out zombies inside the caverns, it's boring and really takes you out of what mgs should be

      It's one of the child extraction missions makes sense until you ask yourself why you have extracted someone that was just sat by a load of infected people that run at you on sight bit they don't bother with the children

    The repetitive missions, bland and barren open world, and the forced FOB are what made me not like V very much. The story and characters didnt help either but i stopped playing after starting the game and seeing i was attacked and had unsuccessful defended just made me quit as i did not want to got out and get the guys and stuff again.

    It's hard to take anyone that unilaterally praises MGSV's gameplay seriously to be honest.
    MGSV has one great thing going for it and that's the way the character controls and the moveset. It's fluid, it's responsive, it's dynamic, it's fun. No one can take that away from it. But gameplay is a lot more than that.
    General gameplay loop? Absolute trash (thanks to Pokemon cancer)
    Mission design? Trash
    Level design? Trash
    Enemies? Trash
    Bosses? LMAO Utter Trash
    Buddy Gimmick? Trash
    Balance? Absolute Trash (non lethal guns still ruining the series)
    Content? Shamelessly Repetitive Trash
    Gunplay? Trash (downgraded from 4)
    Difficulty? I dunno, Invisible Trash? Because i can't see any.
    So why exactly does this game get the excuse of "gameplay is good"?
    Edit: Oh my God. Your very first point about all the mechanics gelling together instead of tripping over each other is literally a lie. Like, MGSV is the poster child of the exact opposite of what you said.
