He definitely was a broken man. Anyone would be after that. When learning that what he believed in and fought for was a lie his whole life was turned upside down.
Yes well, you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. Yes he saved the world but he also condemned a man to death, similarly to how the American government condemned The Boss to death.

Even the kids mentioned Big Boss “hated adults” for their ugliness. Outside of that, Big Boss went off the deep end to build his “perfect world” of soldiers fighting in endless conflict to feel needed. Misinterpreting the Boss’s will and becoming bitter. But he’s still a hero to me lol 🫡 Best MGS character.
You should read his monologue in the second metag gear game with Solid Snake. He wanted to perpetuate a world of conflict to create child soldiers and feed them back into the war machine. "You saw those children, didn't you? Every one is a victim of a war somewhere of the world. And they'll make fine soldiers in the next war. Start a war, for its flames, create victims... Then save them, train them... And feed them back onto the battlefield. It's a perfectly logical system. In this world of ours, conflict never ends. And neither does our purpose... our raison d'etre." Makes Solidus look like a hero.
@@ChameleoSalamander1Solidus trained children soldiers. He was no hero compared to Big Boss. Big Boss may have wanted to wait until they were of adulthood to train them, but the facts show the refugees children were not children soldiers.

His passion to build a nation of soldiers not once but twice and failing both times would turn a man insane. To solid snake, big boss with a nuke is a man who needs to be stopped. But really when you play as him, big boss has no intention of ever launching it. Its just to keep his private army and heaven safe. Even venom, who adopts the persona of big boss, still inherits the same losses and his biggest one not only being the loss of his left forearm, but the whole parasite infestation. 8 years ago I got introduced to this franchise and loved it. 8 years later and my love for it has grown to where I can confidently say that this series is my favorite piece of fiction ever. Solid snake may be my favorite character, but big boss's story is the thing that makes this story my favorite to begin with.
1:04:06 "She betrayed me, Kaz." You betrayed them, Boss. 1:10:20 I can't believe I or we didn't see it up until now. This was THE BIGGEST character difference between Big Boss and Venom Snake, staring us right in the face before it was made obvious he was a Doppelganger.
If nothing else, he was a dictator back in Zanzibar, where he was the head of a nuclear equipped militarized state that invaded other countries at will and seeked to monopolize both the world's nuclear arsenal and the newly found energetic resources. He didn't deny any of this when speaking to Solid Snake and even boasted about finding the perfect balance of war by creating or taking advantage of war orphans for future battlefields.
the purpose of him having nuclear weapons was to unite the world under one banner against him, it was a way for less fighting among the world where only 40 thousand soldiers would be at war against the entire world, he did hold the world hostage by think of it this way, solid has already gotten deep into zanzibar and proved a very worthy threat, why didnt he kill the hostages? why didnt he launch any nuclear weapons? he kidnapped the professer to simply divert the world's attention to zanzibar land so that everyone wouldnt fight but rather stand against him and his army alone, thats his point
Big Boss went through a lot. He was molded as doing the right thing and yet he saw the corruption of his leaders. With his feelings vs his beliefs drove him nuts to the point he wanted his army influenced by Kaz. Betrayals happened that he could no longer trust anyone except for Frank and Ocelot. Then he realized towards the end he can't control everything. He was a fool. Just let the world be. He is like any influencial person they get tricked by the idea of fame and followers. They tend to get lost and hope to change the other people's perspective to aligned with their beliefs thus creating factions, group, army or cult.
@@otacon8790 it's because he believed on the boss so much and worshiped her. He couldn't let her go and tried to keep naked snake forever too to create all super soldiers.
40:00 the irony of this is in our world a flaw in a machine falsely detected a nuclear missle and it was the gut instinct of the humans there who decided to not listen and cause the destruction of the world.
If this is the story I'm thinking of, this was because the person chose to ignore it thinking (understandably) that there would be a lot more than just 1 reading if it was a legitimate nuclear attack.
3 is just a tipping point Big Boss has always questioned forms of government even as a child and as for Chico well it makes you question The Boss’s motives even taking a 14 year old orphan who has already been traumatized and teaching him to fight rather than teach him the values of peace or even how to live off the battlefield in way Big Boss is doing what he witnesses and in PO doesn’t he take Fox to a rehab facility when they first meet don’t take it the wrong way I think The Boss is a wonderful character on her own but it doesn’t mean I don’t question her at times. I love Big Boss for his complexity, how his mind works and how he comes to the conclusions he does. Or the fact he does lies to himself at times and by extension the player either by his senses, The Boss’s passing the flowers turning red or phantom butterflies and flowers petals or repeating the cover story in 3 because the past is too painful to recall and some players believe that he doesn’t have the truth. He truly is one of the greatest characters ever written at least in my opinion
Love this! Feels like we are about to possibly enter into a new Golden age of metal gear! Can't wait for Delta(3) to come out and I have my hopes up 4 will get a rerelease at some point
It isn't that black and white. But Big Boss essentially became the thing he hated in this game. He got angry with the world's governments for using soldiers like him and The Boss...and that is what led to MSF, Mother Base and Outer Heaven. Thing is...he used Venom as a body double, changing his face and lying to him about it. It is more than a little hypocritical. Not to mention Big Boss goes on to stockpile nukes and eventually threaten to launch them. So yea, he is a villain.
By Big Boss's own definition of a dictator he used to describe Gene, his younger self might see his older self as a dictator. Granted a dictator doesnt inherently have to be bad, hell most monarchs back in the day were pretty much dicators with a permanent position of power.
I think Big Boss never fully trusted Kaz and kept Gene’s funds to himself and used them to fund his founding of Zanzibar Land. I think it was like his ace in the hole when Venom was taken down.
I love how you are one of the few that actually understands that at least for a while Venom Snake was a better Big Boss than Big Boss. He was like a loyal dog who lost itself in the message. Probably most of the later legends of Big Boss or Saladin were actually Venom all along. The mirror shattering to me was Venom finally realizing he was used by the villain Big Boss right before Solid comes to face him. Big Boss became the spitting image of Zero by using and discarding soldiers with misinformation and in the end ensured Venom was lost to history just like The Boss.
Probably someone already pointed that out, but, Venom Snake wasn't really above using child soldiers. When we "rescue" the child soldiers from the mines, Venom remarks that one of the child "Is a natural (soldier)", stating he would train them into soldiers. It is Kaz that literally and metaphorically disarms the child, and says he'll put them into rehabilitation instead. Without Kaz intervention, it is likely Venom would made use of child soldiers, same as Big Boss allegedly did without Kaz by his side.
Big Boss, much like The Boss, gave his life to the world to ensure peace and balance. After fighting Solid Snake in Zanzibarland, he wanted to die alongside his mentor and being resurrected at the end of MGS4, he found redemption through his son Solid Snake/David.
“Leader or dictator” Why is it implied those two things are mutually exclusive in the thumbnail? By virtue of definition all dictators are leaders, even if not all leaders are dictators.
In summary, while both leaders and dictators may hold positions of authority, their approaches, sources of authority, treatment of followers, goals, and levels of accountability differ significantly. Leaders typically aim to inspire and empower, while dictators seek to control and dominate. does that clear things up for you mr salty?
@@mycardboardbox Mr.salty” Wow, dude, I literally just asked you an earnest question and gave a brief qualifier to describe why I asked it at all. But if we’re being snide and condescending- that definition you just gave for leader is completely made up and arbitrary. No established, colloquial definition of the word “leader” has ever framed it exclusively in positive qualities in a way similar to yours here. You’re essentially being smarmy over someone not understanding the parameters of a set of subjective qualifications that you made up entirely. It’s not rooted in any previously established and commonly known usage of the original word. It’s like if I said “the difference between a comment and a post is that, while both are sentiments shared on the internet on a topic, comments generally are well reasoned, genuine and foster honest discourse on the topic, while posts do not” While I could argue that that’s my own personal concept of what the term “comment” conveys, I can’t pretend like it’s not a conceptualization that is personal to myself or that it’s an interpretation of the word in common colloquial usage that is immediately recognizable even outside of any established context. I would therefor have to preface my statement to recognize this fact, not doing this would make me look pretentious and intellectually dishonest as well as a tad presumptuous. That’s basically what you just did here lmao
@@mycardboardbox Dictators need to inspire and empower to a degree or those under them would take them out. The more people you kick the more likely someone kicks back. Typically you want to empower people through something causing blind loyalty or servitude.
I wholeheartedly believe Portable Ops is canon because how else would he be able to feed a small army or even provide basic amenities like medical care or even the transportation to stay on the move or to get to a warzone? Exactly
I have a really big theory about this and who the real bad guy of MGSV is, how once set into motion Big Boss has no choice but to become the evil big bad that the world wants him to be so that he can die and set the world free from borders. But in order to do that I’d have to reference a lot of material and it would take a lot to unpack it in a comment. I wish o could make a theory video like this… because it would definitely be a more interesting spin. Or plot twist- That Kaz is actually the orchestrator of everything and his “passion” for chasing down revenge is what perverts the goal that his best friend Naked Snake would have been going for and thats why he faked his own doppelgänger and had to go it alone without Kaz, and using the help of Occelot, who is for all intents and purposes an avid supporter of the real Big Boss and diametrically opposed to what Kaz ends up becoming because he’s blinded by revenge and his passionate self serving ambition to Make Motherbase Great Again! was not Big Bosses dream. And why Occelot continues being a triple agent doing everything he can despite interference to become the Big Bad and unite the world under tyranny of information technology and gun control and free the world with his final sacrifice at the hands of snake, big boss’ ultimate protege. Basically a much grander stage performance than the ruse performed by the Joy and Jack in Groznyjgrad… Boss had to train up her own sword to fall on it, and so too did Big Boss, but the patriots kept going, so Occelot had to take on Liquids brains and emulate his Boss by being the same pariah until the end in order to ensure GW is destroyed and the entire system is reset… or they’d just keep coming back. Kaz is the misguided disciple of his Boss, like how Zero and Big Boss were two disciples with misguided ideals, but the only way Big Boss could see liberation from the system was to become the military state the world would focus its nukes on, and then free them all when he’s taken down. Kaz wanted greatness, Boss wanted to fall from grace so the world could know peace. Kaz came back and dragged Boss back from the brink of death to continue living out his dream- and boss got a patsy, a stand in to fill his shoes. Then he found out Zero had him cloned and he had to change the plan again and make sure Snake did his job and take down both himself and the body double to finish the job. But then the patriots made an AI and only Occelot could carry that torch. See how they’re all kinda playing this long con, or leading the world to hate them just to die at the hands of their own trainee? I think it’s a recurrent theme

My take is that you can see where Big Boss was coming from based on Operation Snake Eater. But at the end of the day, his bitterness took over. Pushing him over to the next level. Becoming a villain because he became cold and manipulative. That's why MGSV is largely misunderstood, because it Does show BB becoming a villain. By creating a decoy (who wasn't in on that) of himself, betraying Kaz and others in his unit and sacrificing civilians at the hospital - he essentially acted just as cold and manipulative as the government did in relation to Operation Snake Eater. Using and sacrificing others so that he could go off and create "The Real Outer Heaven." If you compare BB to Solid. I think it's safe to say that Solid is the good guy of the franchise. He had an extreme level of struggles. Was used and abused by the government and went through a lot as a soldier. Was at one point a bitter loner, but rose from that after meeting Otacon and started Philanthropy. Putting himself out there to stop the proliferation of Metal Gear technology. Perhaps the major difference between BB and Solid is that Solid could have been another BB. He had the legend status to build something like BB built. And he had the tech genius Otacon to make it happen through the internet and keeping them safe through his extreme level of technical know-how. In a way they did build something through Philanthropy. But that wasn't remotely close to what BB built. Instead, Solid never lost his good heart and sense of morality. He wasn't seduced by fame and power. Can't say the same about Big Boss.
Big boss isn't necessarily a dictator nor a war criminal, he's just happen to be the victim of betrayal and dishonesty. Everything big boss did was to serve and do the right thing not help out megalomaniacs who used Pentagons black budget to create weapons of mass destruction of which they lost to the soviet union, Big Boss was lied to and he wanted to escape Foxhound after they worshipped big boss as the greatest soldier to ever live even wanting to clone him.. that's when big boss supposedly dived into villainy, but we really don't know how big boss was during his time in outerheaven, we just know he created a phantom in order to escape Zero, the sad part there was never a war in phantom pain, the real war was always in the background, Big boss versus Zero. Yet in the eyes of his soldiers and comrades John is a hero to them, no matter what he did, he gave them a home and a purpose such thing is a gift which is zanzibar and yes those may be child soldiers and John might be boasting about but if you think about it sounds a lot like old Snake who likes to boast about things and impress others.. secretly he's a goofball with no intent of harming others. he thought his idea was genius and really it turned out to be the smartest on but despite that he gave the lost children a home and purpose evil would do the absolute opposite.
I wish I got into the series way earlier. I'm still catching up with all the lore, I gotta find a way to play po and PW. I've only been able to play mgs1 and V

Depends on what “big boss” we are talking about because venom was the hero or at least anti hero while naked snake was the villain. But that’s what I think idk
Great analysis video but i disagree with the part about Venom being fundamentally different than BB. Venom was all for allowing the child soldiers to continue being soldiers since they already knew how to use guns and whatnot, Kaz was the one who was adamantly opposed and wanted them to have a chance at a normal life. Venom isn't canonically choosing to disarm the nukes. It's player dependent, and he can easily choose to add and develop more nukes on Mother base instead. Venom was created to be an exact mental copy of BB and with surgury his physical copy as well. The only part of him that was not BB was his DNA. So, it stands to believe that all of the decisions Venom makes during this time are similar to what BB's choices would have been. Only when the hypnotherapy started to wear off and the Medic's memories and personality started resurfacing did anything start to differ. The final "Truth" cutscene at the end of the game is highly suggestive and can be interpreted in many ways. I, however, subscribe to the idea that when Medic first learns the truth, he is happy that BB would trust him enough to carry his legacy, hence the smile. However then it follows a timeskip and is during Solid Snake's infiltration of Outer Heaven, and Venom learns the mission parameters of Operation Intrude N313 that he finally comes to understand that he is being used as an expendable pawn and accepts his fate begrudgingly, i.e. punching the mirror. But he was still choosing to die for BB even if he was used. The main difference between their personalities is Big Boss learned the truth immediately after waking from his coma and Venom was fed a lie for presumably years. I do however like the theory that some of Venom's memories were altered so that he would trust Kaz again unlike BB after the Peace Walker reveal. Because learning about Kaz was a main reason of BB's disillusionment with his original ideal.
Hate to be that guy 🤓"but akchully" he got his start in the Virtuous Mission, after which came Operation Snake Eater. Lol I'm sorry... Edit: Portable Ops will always be canon imo.

the purpose of him having nuclear weapons was to unite the world under one banner against him, it was a way for less fighting among the world where only 40 thousand soldiers would be at war against the entire world, he did hold the world hostage by think of it this way, solid has already gotten deep into zanzibar and proved a very worthy threat, why didnt he kill the hostages? why didnt he launch any nuclear weapons? he kidnapped the professer to simply divert the world's attention to zanzibar land so that everyone wouldnt fight but rather stand against him and his army alone, thats his point

Sorry, Boss. We're airdropping one in now
War... war never changes.
*_Maybe the real anti-heroes are all the friends we made along the way._*
@Garland846just like real life.... woah
No sarcasm. That's a Bill and Ted woah.
And the most messed up thing about it? Zero did all of this just because he wanted to hang out with his old war buddy.
@@otacon8790 it's because he believed on the boss so much and worshiped her. He couldn't let her go and tried to keep naked snake forever too to create all super soldiers.
40:00 the irony of this is in our world a flaw in a machine falsely detected a nuclear missle and it was the gut instinct of the humans there who decided to not listen and cause the destruction of the world.
especially of we let the wrong hand's get in control
If this is the story I'm thinking of, this was because the person chose to ignore it thinking (understandably) that there would be a lot more than just 1 reading if it was a legitimate nuclear attack.
I just finished the video. Thank you for all the work you put into this. It is an amazing character analysis. I can't wait for more videos to come!

I think he destroyed the military-industrial complex and took it down with him as a soldier and a mastermind. He is a hero for sure.
I’m slowly going into my anual Metal Gear phase, and I’m so glad so many good videos have been dropping the last few weeks lol
Here’s to you ❤
9 months ago, there's another around the corner!
He truly is one of the greatest characters ever written at least in my opinion
great take 👍
@@mycardboardboxI'm thinking of joining the military but I'm afraid will I do terrible things like covering up incidents or doing something immoral
It's really funny how Kojima could give so much depth to an 80s villain that started out as nothing but pure evil and bland in Metal Gear 1
@@anthonyf616 that’s the fun part about his characters 😊
Great work, opinion, and insight once again. You're very consistent with your channel and content, especially regarding MGS. Love it.
I agree but I doubt BB was really gonna use the nukes but just as deterrent and help unification of other nations but as you know that never happened.
Actually that did happen....... against him
He didn't lied to Venom....More like Venom knew the most about Big Boss. Venom actually felt proud becoming his ideal as seen in Truth mission
Venom is as close as a hero as one can get in the MGS universe.
And in the end BB used him as a decoy in MG. He took everything from him. He's definitely biggest dick in the series
its the fifth time this month i watched this great video i love it way too much, i'm happy to have found this gem of a channel of you'rs
thanks your appreciated
This guy doesn’t miss!, keep up the great work.
Can anyone tell me what the little beep jingle is that plays on the intro for the video? It plays at 2:56 to 2:58
I love how you are one of the few that actually understands that at least for a while Venom Snake was a better Big Boss than Big Boss.
This deserves way more views
I enjoyed the video very much! I can't wait for MGS Delta
Leader.😤💪🏾💙

Big Boss, much like The Boss, gave his life to the world to ensure peace and balance. After fighting Solid Snake in Zanzibarland, he wanted to die alongside his mentor and being resurrected at the end of MGS4, he found redemption through his son Solid Snake/David.
“Leader or dictator”
Why is it implied those two things are mutually exclusive in the thumbnail? By virtue of definition all dictators are leaders, even if not all leaders are dictators.
In summary, while both leaders and dictators may hold positions of authority, their approaches, sources of authority, treatment of followers, goals, and levels of accountability differ significantly. Leaders typically aim to inspire and empower, while dictators seek to control and dominate. does that clear things up for you mr salty?
@@mycardboardbox
Mr.salty”
Wow, dude, I literally just asked you an earnest question and gave a brief qualifier to describe why I asked it at all.
It’s like if I said “the difference between a comment and a post is that, while both are sentiments shared on the internet on a topic, comments generally are well reasoned, genuine and foster honest discourse on the topic, while posts do not”
While I could argue that that’s my own personal concept of what the term “comment” conveys, I can’t pretend like it’s not a conceptualization that is personal to myself or that it’s an interpretation of the word in common colloquial usage that is immediately recognizable even outside of any established context.
Typically you want to empower people through something causing blind loyalty or servitude.
love your work! can't wait for more!

Or plot twist-
That Kaz is actually the orchestrator of everything and his “passion” for chasing down revenge is what perverts the goal that his best friend Naked Snake would have been going for and thats why he faked his own doppelgänger and had to go it alone without Kaz, and using the help of Occelot, who is for all intents and purposes an avid supporter of the real Big Boss and diametrically opposed to what Kaz ends up becoming because he’s blinded by revenge and his passionate self serving ambition to Make Motherbase Great Again! was not Big Bosses dream.
And why Occelot continues being a triple agent doing everything he can despite interference to become the Big Bad and unite the world under tyranny of information technology and gun control and free the world with his final sacrifice at the hands of snake, big boss’ ultimate protege.
Basically a much grander stage performance than the ruse performed by the Joy and Jack in Groznyjgrad…
Boss had to train up her own sword to fall on it, and so too did Big Boss, but the patriots kept going, so Occelot had to take on Liquids brains and emulate his Boss by being the same pariah until the end in order to ensure GW is destroyed and the entire system is reset… or they’d just keep coming back.
You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain
you're quoting 2 face from batman lol?

My take is that you can see where Big Boss was coming from based on Operation Snake Eater. But at the end of the day, his bitterness took over. Pushing him over to the next level. Becoming a villain because he became cold and manipulative. That's why MGSV is largely misunderstood, because it Does show BB becoming a villain. By creating a decoy (who wasn't in on that) of himself, betraying Kaz and others in his unit and sacrificing civilians at the hospital - he essentially acted just as cold and manipulative as the government did in relation to Operation Snake Eater. Using and sacrificing others so that he could go off and create "The Real Outer Heaven."
If you compare BB to Solid.
Remember: Outer Heaven was ran by Venom, those kid soldiers were HIS refugees. Big Boss used child soldiers.
I wish I got into the series way earlier. I'm still catching up with all the lore, I gotta find a way to play po and PW. I've only been able to play mgs1 and V
Big Boss was betrayed by pretty much everyone around him essentially so he acted and made adjustments accordingly.
Congrats on 1k likes

Second time watching a video of this channel and twice he says the boss is the apprentice. SHE'S NOT THE APPRENTICE, SHE'S THE MASTER
timestamp it? just to let you know when i say "the boss" i could also be referring to big boss, jack, john, naked, snake because some people simply just refer to him as just "boss", so if you cant read between the lines that that's your problem not mine doesn't take a genius to work out does it , just really a sad bit of criticism on your end
@@mycardboardbox between 4:38 and 4:49. You said that "big boss would question.....something that his disciple, "The Boss" would understand" but The Boss ain't the disciple, she's the Master. Depends on what “big boss” we are talking about because venom was the hero or at least anti hero while naked snake was the villain. But that’s what I think idk
there's no villains in Metal Gear, just different worldviews, except maybe for Coldman and Skull Face
Thank god I just got mgs3 again and all that I want 4 but ima play 5 again too lol.

Big Boss forever a leader. i wrote a song and an album called Outer Heaven in his Honour.
why not both leader and dictator? the truth is that people get old and stop being practical in the field. and it's not as though any other politician gives a shit about job security for the armed forces. that people remain puppets of a state in the war economy is beside the point.
big boss was no hero. he was a monster who was just like the other patriots
