used market. still hard to find, but i've seen a few decent condition ones on eBay. there are also other android based handheld consoles (not that Sony xperia...thing). i have something called a GPD XD.
Yeah...but the GPD is too expensive. $200 max for what that handheld is capable of. I would rather just buy A Nintendo Switch when that comes out. When the GPD device can can handle *New* games 720p at medium settings...it will be worth $200. High settings at 720p....$300-$400. Old games like Fallout and Skyrim at low-medium settings at playable speed for $370 last time I checked. Chinese seller as well? Yeah...way overpriced for now. Nintedo Switch+Skyrim remastered $360 and the graphics will be insane compared to the GPD.
There is a need of more initiative from phone (or maybe, not necessarily phone) manufacturers, if there was more manufactures making these kind of consoles there would be more developers making games for these kind of consoles.
there's also the Smach Z that's a hand held pc, thats coming out later this year but it's probably gonna cost more than the GPD WIN and only performs slightly better than the GPD. I agree with Patrick the GPD is too expensive for what it can do, it only gets about 20-25 frames on Skyrim at lowest settings. Some youtubers who were sent a free GPD will tell you that's playable because they didn't pay for it. As a consumer why would i even waste $350+ on a device that can not get you a stable 30 frames on an older game?
I'm playing it on my GS3... and my GS2... and my GS1... and my HTC One... and my Nexus 7... I think you get me? If people want to emulate NDS/GBA/PSX/PSP games on a Mobile Device they can pretty much do it on the large majority of them currently out. No point in mentioning something like that as anyone who wants to emulate already knows they can on pretty much any smart phone these days.
Hey, its all personal preference, I'd rather game on my shield than a phone, and use my phone as a phone. At least the shield showed me how superior android is compared to iOS. :P
Ryu Zwei Yeah but playing any kind of emulated game especially Arcade MAME games SUCK the big one with touch screen phone controls. Comfortable physical controls built in FTW. Then there is the better stereo speakers, as well. Yes any phone/tab works, but the experience is wanting to say the least.
I got a shield a couple years ago. Personally I liked it but it got old fast. However, they continued to update it and it's got half life 2, portal, mount & blade, and games like Crysis 3 have been announced. I have a GTX 650 graphics card so Im able to stream on it, however, my router is shit. The thing is, now there's a thing called grid and if you don't know what it is just imagine a Netflix for games. Even if you don't plan on streaming from your PC, it's a great buy ;)
I've had my Shield for 8 months but I've stopped using it. My phone can pretty much do everything my Shield could do so its on my shelf collecting dust.
I've had a Shield since it first came out and i must say that it was MUCH better in its infancy. once nVidia provided the ability to access your PC remotely (WAN) it all went downhill; latency increased, reliability went down and compression went up. Before nVidia gave us the innternet gamestream option, we simply used a VPN forwarder and it worked GREAT. Now that nVidia is using your login to connect to your computer, i have lost the ability to search for multiple computers on my network and to log in simply with a generated code for pairing. Sorry to anyone who buys one now, its a great product, but nothing like it used to be. if you downgrade to the older firmware, youll lose some battery life and you'll feel the fan running, but it will work better (you'll also have to downgrade your nVidia experience on your computer.)
Odd question, If you were given the £99 Windows 10 tablet and The nvidia shield which one would you prefer to use? I ask as my laptop recently died (msi ge 60 2pc apache) and wish to replace it with somthing fairly powerful and portable. Also if you don't mind me asking what Motorbike do you ride? :)
The Shield is pretty nice and it does show that the Handheld market still exists. Now we just need more things happening in the scene, which could be helped by the next Shield iteration in some way if it had mobile data and NVIDIA encouraged devs to make games for Tegra Zone/Shield Store in a dedicated fashion as opposed to having them run through Google Play first.
I saw your video reviews of the Nvidia Shield & the Steam box, I like them both plus the way you showed us the fps in it, I had notice that when it was connected, it ran great but when it was wireless, the fps drops and didn't have the best rate to play, but all in all, I loved it, I will definitely get me both of them in the future.
Limelight is the same thing as gamestream, except it can run on devices other than the Shield, I believe. Splashtop, as shown in the video, has considerably more latency problems than the two former.
things like Nvidia Grid and splashtop are likely to be the future I think. We already went from a "make every desktop able to do everything" to "virtualize ALL the things", so gaming is the next step. with advancements in wireless protocols we have the ability to maximize performance/power ratios and hardware costs. Also things like SoftXpand are a big boost (my computer is pretty much powerful enough to run 3 1920x1080 games at once performance-wise)
Hey Linus! Just wanted to say thanks for convincing me to buy a Shield. It's been a great device so far and I'm really enjoying it! I was a little disappointed by last night's nVidia conference but maybe nVidia will announce some cool new Gamestream/Shadow Play/GeForce Experience features later on in the show. Enjoy CES!
Knowing that a company is doing their own version of the ghetto shield, makes me wonder how many guys in big companies watch linusthechtips. The name of the controller is MOGA pro, and will be coming soon to Newegg
That currently isn't possible with current data streaming speeds, but something Nvidea is know to be working on is a system called Grid. This involves having high powered 'gaming servers' running games constantly and you can access them on devices like shield from anywhere with a wifi or 4g connection. I'm not sure that all my facts are right, but that is the main idea, or at least what was presented at Pax.
I bought the Shield expecting to use it randomly around the house when I don't really feel like sitting in front of my computer but I feel like playing a game. Currently my wireless solution sucks and the wifi doesn't pick up on it where i'm at usually, and using my PC as an access point helps, but it's not fast enough. Found myself playing N64 games on it more which it does beautifully. My only gripe is I had to get my own file browser. Rotation Control app is also a must to lock in landscape.
I love my Nvidia Shield, even managed to get my hands on it in the UK which was nice. Had to upgrade my router though, but to be fair i was only using a crappy £20 router before hand. I'm currently using one of the recommended routers on the list which is the Asus RT-N66U Dark Knight (Awesome name) and it works perfectly! I have a steam library of 177 games, not to mention non steam games which you can add and run perfectly :) Defiantly worth the purchase for me. Great vid Linus.
The Shield would be a killer product if they implemented a convertible design to the display so you can simply attach a compatible smartphone onto the controller part and use it that way. While charging the smartphone and even possibly utilizing some of the smartphones processing power to run the entire show.
linus, do a PS Remote play video, iirc you showed us that you have a PS4 in your house, and you have the Sony Xperia phones that are able to use PS remote play
The other day, I was sitting in front of my monitor, and thought, "Man, I wish I could game on a much smaller screen in the next room over.". Now that I see this, I realize that dreams can come true.
I'm glad they decided to have a symmetric layout the way the Playstation has it. I'm not too keen having the left analog stick and the D-pad switched like they are on the XBox.
What this needs is good exclusive games, imo. Android games are a start, but they don't really tax what the SoC can do because they have to be optimized around all the SoCs from the last two years to gain market share. i want Nvidia to partner with someone to make a game from the ground-up for the Shield and Tegra 4.
I like it! Could you carry on playing a game already loaded on your desktop with shield? Scenario - playing skyrim on desktop - need food, go sit in kitchen while food cooks playing on shield where I left off?
Does your PC have to be on to stream to the NVIDIA Shield? What is the exact stream length of the Shield? I plan to take it with me during a summer vacation and I would be dozen of miles away from my home.
bought one from the us since it's not out yet in europe, can't wait to get my hands on it. Can you test streaming to the shield using splashtop thd? it's should be better than on the htc one, and it should be a good solution for those using older cards than 650... there are a couple of short videos that reviews the shield with splashtop but they are one minute short, so please make one. thanks
Okay i have a nvidia shield, and yes i think its fricking amazing but maybe the price can go down a bit :/ coz its too expensive, it feels great when you hold it, fits into your hand perfectly and seriously no lag and i definetly think this is future tech
I'd much prefer if they used a dual-touch screen set up as opposed to a controller, which would give a better form factor and controller layout customization.
I know this video is old and so this comment is unlikely to get read. I was considering getting a shield for gaming round the house and in the yard, and for the occasional trips on the train/bus. I do not have a Nvidia graphics card for my pc (amd user) so I cant do the streaming as I understand it. However I am very interested in the shield as a platform for my emulated games, namely snes/psp games. I know that it runs stock android and I have emulators on my mobile as well but the touch screen interface leaves alot to be desired. Anyone with experience playing emulated games on the shield, I would like to hear your opinions!
Drezzek01 Hey man, here's an answer for you. I ordered the newer shield tablet, and it is due to arrive tomorrow. I can give a better answer or perhaps a video when I spend more time with it. For current answers here it is: I owned the shield portable (one in this video) and returned it. At the time it didn't work with my gtx 780m notebook so I didn't see a purpose to have it. I did use it as an emulator though. Runs nintendo 64 and DS emulators extremely well, no stuttering at all, which for you would be great! As far as streaming goes: There may be a solution out there, but at the time you're out of luck unless you purchase an NVIDIA GPU. IF an NVIDIA GPU is not currently in your budget, then I would still recommend this to you. Emulations are great, except portrait mode apps are a nightmare on this. Finally, there is something called NVIDIA Gird. IT IS IN BETA! You need a 5Ghz dual-band router to use it. What it does is, as long as you live in the US, Canada, or western Europe (not germany currently), then you get access to a bunch of AAA titles such as Dead Island, Batman: Arkham Origins, Borderlands 1&2, Saints Row: The Third, etc. YOU DON'T NEED A GAMING PC TO USE NVIDIA GRID!!! IT'S BEAUTIFUL!!!! It's free access to all SHIELD owners until June 30th, 2015. At that point they may take it down for a bit, or go straight into more servers and then a monthly or annual fee for it. If you have anymore questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I will be more than happy to answer any question you may have :)
***** How's the game streaming over internet? When MGS5 hits, it'd be a dream to play it at uni/ on the go. I'm Kinda upset that Linus only talked about streaming around the house. If I want to play my PC games at home, I'll do it on my PC. I want this to play my compatible PC games anywhere I get great wifi.
Drezzek01 If you're just looking for a better emulator experience, there are bluetooth controllers you can buy for your phone.www.amazon.com/Wireless-Bluetooth-Controller-iPhone-Samsung/dp/B00GNXMXA8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1439502074&sr=8-4&keywords=ipega . I bought this one, and I quite enjoy it. The clamp is large enough to hold my Galaxy Grand Prime, which is a 5 inch screen.
It was just an idea. The OS doesn't have to be Ubuntu. It could be a full fledged WIndows or Android device. Or, based on the manufacturer, we could see something better than the best parts of both combined
what it needs is a nice, long usb 3.0 cable so a good router isn't necessary, lag can be reduced even further, and battery life does not need to be watched. i think people would pay for a wired version with no expensive tegra processor and battery packs, with only the awesome screen and controller.
After about 2 months with my shield I can say I absolutely love it. The majority of my usage time comes from video/livestream consumption. The great speakers and the hinged screen so you can drop it anywhere makes it awesome. I bring it pretty much everywhere. PC streaming works near flawlessly and mobile gaming is great, especially emulators.
there are a lot of fresh titles too, i've just cited ports... ravensword for example, anomaly (already mentioned) was released about 1 year ago, another good title is little big war game and its sequel, real racing series (yeah i know EA but these are really good racing games), dungeon defenders , a lot of indie titles maybe not so popular but really well made and released also on 3ds. Speaking of controls, the majority of games support HID devices and x360pad so the compatibility already exist.
Linus, I know you've been on Geekhack at least once before... is that a Corsair K65 wearing the Klaxon set in the background? Might be a long-shot, but the set was delivered about a month ago, not sure what else it could be.
Nice review, I'm seriously considering getting one. One question though: are the analog sticks "clickable" like the Xbox 360? I can't find an answer anywhere. Thanks!
taking a step back from the number of buttons games can use would really piss people off in fps games where they are used to having them all, so there is no way they would take away that functionality.
You would be hard pressed to find a place where you would sit down and want to play a hand-held console, while not being in wifi range. You're in a cafe? They probably have wifi. At the train/bus station? Probably has wifi. Even on planes wifi is becoming more common.
I think there will be still stationary consoles for the newer, more demanding games (just like PCs will stay with us for a very long time before they start to change), but mobile gaming will evolve much faster when the games for it will be more like the newer ones, more people will start using mobile devices for gaming.
i do like the idea of the shield and mobile gaming is great. My thoughts and question is with nvidia grid and this product. Would it be possible to access a pc game through the grid wireless through a network or possible mobile network like a 4g?
I think it's a wonderful product and it is the future of gaming. If it was selling for $200 I buy it in a heartbeat, but I completely understand $300 price tag.
I would love one of these but I can't carry this extra weight around in my backpack (due to all the heavy books and laptop required for class). Is there any controller that I could hook up to my Note 3 in order to game? Any recommendations? Thanks :D
I was very interested in this before it was released, but now I think it would be less of a hassle to build a little HTPC for $400-$500 and hook it up to my TV.
i'll wait for Shield 2 that will hopefully be based on Valve's new controller instead of the 360 and also more battery and also bigger screen and less bezels and also a bigger steam library.
Really wish it could stream your PC game library from any WiFi hotspot. That would sell it for me. I will get this device eventually, just not right now.
Nvidia is currently heavily working on porting PC games to the Android platform combined with K1, with a little help by Valve. So, there might be more big native games to come, over the course of the next year.
I got an onlive game controller and a note 3 for my mobile gaming. I can't really take advantage of windows streaming, because my game collection is in GNU+Linux.
I believe in centralized computing power and dumb terminals in different form factors that feed off it, of course with high bandwidth/low latency home networks. I talk a little about it in my upcoming steam machines video.
If the Nvidia Shield had phone functionality, I'd buy one even if the price went up. That's because, to me, carrying around a minimal number of devices is important. Besides, using that screen to video call people would be amazing. Also, multi-role products give the value of the two devices rolled into one. As it stands, this thing is just a larger and more expensive Nintendo DS to me. That's cool and all, but is as cool as playing Mario Cart on the bus Via WIFI?
lol listen to 00:51 with your eyes closed and try not to laugh
+Sam Byers LOL
+Sam Byers Wow...
+Sam Byers LOL oh common!
lol
+Sam Byers LMAO I DIED my arms got fatigued after about 5 10 min
They need to bring it back. for $150 it is well worth it
used market. still hard to find, but i've seen a few decent condition ones on eBay. there are also other android based handheld consoles (not that Sony xperia...thing). i have something called a GPD XD.
Joeborg I still think it's the best investment I ever made for gaming
Yeah...but the GPD is too expensive. $200 max for what that handheld is capable of. I would rather just buy A Nintendo Switch when that comes out. This is nostalgic as hell somehow. Huh, guess I've always been a heckin dork
Heck.
wow I didn't notice how small his hands were until he mentioned it, it's like that part of Deadpool where his hand is slowly growing back
@@vr_astro 😂
He Linus, you didn't mention the emulation capabilities of the shield..
Right now I'm playing pokemon black on it :)
I'm playing it on my GS3... and my GS2... and my GS1... and my HTC One... and my Nexus 7... I think you get me? Ryu Zwei the galaxy s1 can emulate DS? Didn't think it was powerful enough.
Mast3rT0ast420 This. It's much better using physical buttons.
Ryu Zwei
Yeah but playing any kind of emulated game especially Arcade MAME games SUCK the big one with touch screen phone controls. Comfortable physical controls built in FTW. Then there is the better stereo speakers, as well. Yes any phone/tab works, but the experience is wanting to say the least.
This would be perfect with a better game library
Valor Boyd is the entire steam library not good enough for you?
I got a shield a couple years ago. Personally I liked it but it got old fast. +chadd1237 can we buy it from you?
joshua litton nah

Great review, looks better than I thought it would.
Can we get a comparison between limelight, splashtop and gamestream?
Limelight is the same thing as gamestream, except it can run on devices other than the Shield, I believe. Splashtop, as shown in the video, has considerably more latency problems than the two former.

The art of making D-pads was lost in the '90s.

Picked up mine for 150 ish at my local gamestop.
Wish you would revisit this device to see what you can do with it now.
The case is really cool when bringing on a vacation or to school.
And the case protects it while it's in the bag.
I bought the Shield expecting to use it randomly around the house when I don't really feel like sitting in front of my computer but I feel like playing a game. I was on the fence at $299.00 I realized last night it was $199 now. I pulled the trigger and ordered it.

the steam deck before the steam deck. This thing was ahead of its time
totally agree with you on this I honestly never see "mobile gaming" taking over PC gaming EVER! who wants to play a small touch screen?
linus, do a PS Remote play video, iirc you showed us that you have a PS4 in your house, and you have the Sony Xperia phones that are able to use PS remote play
I'd actually really like to get this thing someday when I've done some MAJOR PC upgrades.
The other day, I was sitting in front of my monitor, and thought, "Man, I wish I could game on a much smaller screen in the next room over.". Now that I see this, I realize that dreams can come true.
I like your way of talking
pause the video when you see linus, no matter when you pause it, his face always looks funny!
I'm glad they decided to have a symmetric layout the way the Playstation has it. I'm not too keen having the left analog stick and the D-pad switched like they are on the XBox.

update this with moonlight streaming it uses the nvidia software and is realy damm great even on slow networks
I was missing a video from linus ah it is back now :D
Shield + DS emulator for Pokemon = Win.
Good review Linus ...you covered all the important details.
I like it! Could you carry on playing a game already loaded on your desktop with shield?
Scenario - playing skyrim on desktop - need food, go sit in kitchen while food cooks playing on shield where I left off?
Yes, you could do that.
well you'd have to save and exit on the desktop I believe.
MrShackleford
No, you'd have to keep it on at the desktop, or else the Shield has nothing to stream.
Does your PC have to be on to stream to the NVIDIA Shield? What is the exact stream length of the Shield? I plan to take it with me during a summer vacation and I would be dozen of miles away from my home.
The answer is: Watch the video.
Can you play AND charge the device at the same time?
Do you think that splash would run faster/smoother with a high spec phone like the note 3?
interesting video format Linus, seems more personal and friendly feeling.
bought one from the us since it's not out yet in europe, can't wait to get my hands on it.
Can you test streaming to the shield using splashtop thd?
it's should be better than on the htc one,
and it should be a good solution for those using older cards than 650...
there are a couple of short videos that reviews the shield with splashtop but they are one minute short, so please make one. thanks

The thing i enjoyed the most about this video was the gtx 780 in the background (:
Man I really like the D Pad
It was just an idea. The OS doesn't have to be Ubuntu. It could be a full fledged WIndows or Android device. Or, based on the manufacturer, we could see something better than the best parts of both combined
what it needs is a nice, long usb 3.0 cable so a good router isn't necessary, lag can be reduced even further, and battery life does not need to be watched. i think people would pay for a wired version with no expensive tegra processor and battery packs, with only the awesome screen and controller.
Still needs to be bigger marketed as a laptop in terms of carrying them around maybe make a stylish messenger bag for it.
What i want to know, which nobody explains is, can i download games from the steam library or is it just a duplicate screen
It has to be inside the your PC's network. The games you can take on the go are your android games and emulators.
LinusTechTips can you connect a keyboard to the shield? If so Bluetooth or wired.
wow great review linus very good in labeling out the pro's and con's
there are a lot of fresh titles too, i've just cited ports... ravensword for example, anomaly (already mentioned) was released about 1 year ago, another good title is little big war game and its sequel, real racing series (yeah i know EA but these are really good racing games), dungeon defenders , a lot of indie titles maybe not so popular but really well made and released also on 3ds. Speaking of controls, the majority of games support HID devices and x360pad so the compatibility already exist.
Linus, I know you've been on Geekhack at least once before... is that a Corsair K65 wearing the Klaxon set in the background? Might be a long-shot, but the set was delivered about a month ago, not sure what else it could be.
when streaming to the shield how will games using keyboard and mouse be affected on the shield? Will the controls automatically switch to controller
I watched another review and found out the sticks are clickable. :)
You would be hard pressed to find a place where you would sit down and want to play a hand-held console, while not being in wifi range. You're in a cafe? They probably have wifi. At the train/bus station? Probably has wifi. Even on planes wifi is becoming more common.
I think there will be still stationary consoles for the newer, more demanding games (just like PCs will stay with us for a very long time before they start to change),
but mobile gaming will evolve much faster when the games for it will be more like the newer ones, more people will start using mobile devices for gaming.
It terrifies me how Linus man handles expensive electronics.
Hey Linus could you do a unboxing and overview on the moga pro controller please ?
0:52 the cameraman giggled, i don't blame him. X3
i do like the idea of the shield and mobile gaming is great. My thoughts and question is with nvidia grid and this product. Would it be possible to access a pc game through the grid wireless through a network or possible mobile network like a 4g?
this is sure the future gaming however it could be made better in the future. It can be smaller and no bezel?
I am just barely hesitant to buy this device because of the price. This type of thing is the future of mobile gaming.
I'm planning on playing this on the other side of the world. Would streaming work?
I think it's a wonderful product and it is the future of gaming. If it was selling for $200 I buy it in a heartbeat, but I completely understand $300 price tag.
Honestly, if you bought a super-high end hardwares for your uber awesome PC. Where would you play when you're at your house?
I would love one of these but I can't carry this extra weight around in my backpack (due to all the heavy books and laptop required for class).
Is there any controller that I could hook up to my Note 3 in order to game? Any recommendations? Thanks :D
I was very interested in this before it was released, but now I think it would be less of a hassle to build a little HTPC for $400-$500 and hook it up to my TV.
Linus ,
how is the battery when gaming ?
i'll wait for Shield 2 that will hopefully be based on Valve's new controller instead of the 360 and also more battery and also bigger screen and less bezels and also a bigger steam library.
So wait you cant take this around like it has to be by your PC ? Or are there games i can take on the go ?
Yes, multiple times, even seen pictures and videos from their wedding, it's not hard to find.
"Linus & Yvonne Wedding Video"
Look that up.
I think the future would be a Nintendo 3ds style item (shaped, not anything else) and entirely open. Maybe running Ubuntu or something similar
I probably would have bought one if i had an nvidia gpu.
My internet's 500kb/s down and 40 kb/s up, but including the other uses do you think I should get one?
Did anyone else notice the amazingly high frame rate in this video?
Idk why this is in my recommended in 2021 but I remember wanting this device so bad back in the day
I feel like they should make the next shield with a detachable screen. If that was the case I could easily justify paying the price
Try limelight it uses Shields streaming on any device but it's a bit hard to get running
I would really like to buy one, on amazon.com it's being sold for 200$ (145€) which would be a pretty good deal.
But it's not aviable in Germany.
fun fact: the price dropped to $199 so it's even more amazing!!!!!!!!!
I think once this technology comes to the already existing portable gaming options (psp/ds) then it will be more worthy of the price.
its not so much about wiating to get home to play. its about getting the kind of games you like to play on a mobile platform.
I use a HTC one (M7), Moga Power Controller (In HID Mode), and the limelight gamestream app, which runs at almost same latency.
as the shield
would the shield stream from your computer if you have a geforce 7800 gtx?
U can play kart
