    This is NOT a how-to video. This is a college-level basic introduction to computer building master class! Well done! Reminds me of the videos I did here on TH-cam about 10 years ago. We are birds of a feather!

      Carey, that means a lot, coming from you, my friend! I've been a long-time subscriber of your channel, and appreciate your teaching. Just the other day I was amazed to see that the 5 year license to Roboform that I bought through a deal you arranged was expiring in less than a year. Time flies. Keep doing your thing. You have helped so many people!

    Have just built my first pc for 13 years and I have to say this has been the best video I have seen on supporting this process by a country mile. I watched this 3 times from beginning to end before starting and have come back to this video another 10 or so times as I have built, changed on reinstalled windows and hardware. I cannot thank you enough with your calm and patient approach to EVERY part of the process, nothing was missing. Even though you did not install a GPU you so kindly covered this so I could. If I could buy you a beer I would. However living on the south coast of England it would be a bit of a journey. PC build: BeQuiet Shadow 800DX case, MSI Z790 Tomahawk WiFi Max, i5 14600K CPU, 32GB 6000MHx RAM, MSI Geforce RTX 4060Ti GPU, Crucial T500 2TB SSD, BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 5 Cooler and BeQuiet 12M 850W power supply. Thank you.

    Sir, I just got my newly built PC up and running and one of the first things I wanted to do with it was leave this comment. Thanks so much for this video. It was such an incredible help you wouldn't believe it. I've watched a lot of how-to-build videos in the past months, but I had my old laptop running with this video up while I built this PC and having a calming, encouraging influence while I tried not to get overcome with anxiety was fantastic. I understand other creators might want to draw in more views with high energy, but a "slow and easy" approach was just what I needed. Those might be available, but not with such a depth of information and a nice dash of dry humor. I don't know, maybe it's because you're British.
    I second (and third) all the people saying this is the best video on PC building TH-cam has. Believe me, I think I've watched them all.

    The close-ups, like with placing the CPU etc., are much appreciated. As with the editing. A lot of thought and effort have been put into producing this and not something rushed (so as to produce as many as possible, like with many channels). As with several other people here, I've genuinely become more confident to build my own unit. That will be something, at age 64, despite using computers since the late 1980s! This video deserves a lot more views. As with the number of Subscribers here.

As such I have been doing my best to learn by watching and reading all I can. A link to this video should be included with EVERY major PC component sold. Your presentation is clear and concise and non-threatening to even basic newbies (I'm not), and anyone with minimal aptitude WILL be able to accomplish a successful build. Absolutely FABULOUS tutorial, I have been searching for two weeks on utube to find out how to build a computer. You show every step clear, concise, SLOWLY, most other donot show all of the mouse clicks and dropdown menus like you do. YOU are truly for a beginner as I am, THANK YOU SO MUCH. You have given me the confidence I need to try this on my own. The only thing is on asus website they talk about renaming the downloaded bios file on their tutorial page as a step to perform, but either way you are great.

    • @NerdSidekick
      @NerdSidekick  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your nice comments!
      For normal BIOS updates (like I show in the video), you do NOT need to rename the file. The only time you have to rename the file is if you can't get into your BIOS and you have to use the ASUS FlashBack feature. For example, if you lost power during a BIOS update, this might happen. In that case, you can plugin a USB flash drive into a special FlashBack port on the motherboard, press a button on the motherboard, and a new BIOS file will be installed. For this to work, the motherboard will look for a file with a specific name. The BIOSRenamer program will take care of renaming the file correctly so the FlashBack feature can work. This page explains how to do this: www.asus.com/us/support/faq/1038568/

    I've decided that it's time for me to build my own computer. Being of the same generation as the instructor, I found this not only useful but also reminiscing about when I got my first computer 30 years ago, opening it up and seeing what appeared to be a jumble of wires and cables. Not to mention, hard drives of such proportions, that could break toes if you happened to drop them.
    This has now given me the boost in confidence to proceed and get this computer built and working.
    Thank you so much.

    I haven't built a PC for 30+ yrs, things have changed since my last build, that I knew nothing about. Having watched all the way through, I'm more informed than I was, trying to decypher from the various different startup guides, that assume you are conversant with recent tech: ref computers. I'm not or rather wasn't, I sort of worked out what some were, but found one cable in case that didn't make any sense, then traced cable back to it's origin and found I don't need it anyway. Might have been nice to have list of cables in case, but apart from a quick guide, nothing. This was a problem 35 yrs ago, translation was, to say the least hit and miss. It's much better today, but just using pictograms doesn't help.
    This is a good refresher course, all the way through there was something to be understood easily. I especially liked the install for win 11. the last install I did was win 98!!!
    Thanks for helping an old man feel not so stupid as I was before watching.

      It's always a balancing act with providing the right amount of instruction without making it so basic that people lose interest. But I like to err on the side of assuming people don't know most things. That way they aren't left with missing important info.

    An amazing job- only thing I wished is that you had installed a 360mm All-in-one water-cooled unit, as the gaming crowd typically is leaning that way over an air-cooled solution. Yes, I know there are even more complex 'custom built water loops' that could be their own video subject, plus the external air-conditioner or "chiller" units which are truly pushing the envelope, and then the liquid nitrogen for the benchmark crowd. Of course at some point one begins to challenge Dr. Frankenstein... "It's ALIVE!!" Thanks for your talented and well-thought-out presentation, with the added plus of amazing photography and editing. I have built my own PC years back, this is a nugget of information that will help many TH-camrs. Much appreciated!

    great video but I did have that exact same case (older version with 2 140mm front fans), and on the back, you removed that one large panel for cable management. Unless Lian Li changed that case's specs, that other smaller cover panel hides a fan hub. My 2 140mm fans were connected to it from the factory, but it was a great place to connect the rear exhaust fan with a long cable. No extensions needed. Just an observation, but this is a good video for anyone considering building their first PC, everything covered all in one!

    • @NerdSidekick

      The fan hub is shown in the instructions as an options that comes with the "Performance Version" of the case, but is not included with this version.

    Superb video. Many thanks indeed. My first build successful. I watched and re-watched this every step of the way.
    The only thing missing for me was any mention of installing Linux rather than Windows and how that might impact the updating BIOS and installation process. Perhaps you could make a video just of that process on a new-build PC - that would be very helpful.
    I didn't bother updating the BIOS. Linux installed fine. Thanks again 👍

    An excellent tutorial! This will be my first full build. I'm retired and on a budget so to be able to purchase the items separately as funding allows is very helpful. My computer is 13 years old and it takes literally days to edit a 25 min. GoPro 12 video. The case, power supply, extra fan, CPU cooler (ARCTIC Freezer 34), Multi-Function Screwdriver Tool Set:, and miscellaneous cables arrived today :) I have one question though. I noticed that Amazon has the Intel® Core™ i7-14700K for the exact same price as the i7-137400K. Is there any advantage to one over the other?
    Regards,
    Kevin
    PS: Thank you so much again.

    • @NerdSidekick
      @NerdSidekick  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Glad the video helped you. Good luck with your build!
      The 14700k is slightly faster than the 13700k. You can compare CPUs with a site like this: cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-14700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-13700K/4152vs4137
      Pricing is always changing, and there can be multiple suppliers on Amazon who can price products however they see fit. It's possible there is some "dumping" going on since these chips had problems.

    The Top video to learn all about how to build a PC. Thank you very much for that! I understand that a lot of free hours went into this video to make something like that, but it certainly worked out perfectly. I wanted to order the parts next week based on your lists, unfortunately not in your country because of the high import tax and shipping costs to the Netherlands. But unfortunately, I've read several posts about the stability issues Intel has with the 13th and 14th Gen CPUs. The offered solutions can only be realized by upgrading via the Bios. If something goes wrong there, your motherboard is probably defective as well. It seems to me that as an absolute beginner in PC building, I'd be better off waiting for Intel to find a definitive solution. What is your opinion on that? Should we start or wait and see?

    • @NerdSidekick
      @NerdSidekick  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I started making this video before the Intel problem reached "critical mass" but I might have gone in a different direction if I was buying parts now. However, Intel has extended the warranty for the affected CPUs by two years, and they have provided updated code that manufacturers are releasing in BIOS updates. I'm not afraid to do those updates, and you should not fear doing those, as many motherboards today have mechanisms for recovering from a botched update. BIOS updates should be a regular part of maintaining a computer, especially if you build it yourself.
      There's always more new CPUs coming out, so investigate what is coming and find something that you can get behind. If you need a new computer, don't be afraid to move ahead.

    • @kayo9514
      @kayo9514 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@NerdSidekick Thank you for your detailed answer. You are right that if you build your own computer, you should also be able to update the BIOS as part of a maintenance process. And yes, I think I will need a new computer in the near future because the PC I want to replace is now 11 1/2 years old. So there is a chance that the end is slowly coming into sight. So I think I'll wait a little longer to see what Intel is going to do next to really fix the problems. Also, the PC I want to replace has an Intel i7 processor and has never let me down in all these years. So it's also a reason to think about Intel. Thank you again for your answer and the opportunity to build my first PC with the help of a perfect great instruction and learning video from your hand.

    This is fantastic. I have been watching a lot of guides, and I think I have this down pretty well. I'm going to build my first PC soon. I was mostly unsure of the power switch headers. Also, I have watched a few guides that recommend connecting the CPU, RAM, and AIO or whatever cooler and testing with HDMI either to the motherboard or GPU and jumping the power switch with positive and negative to make sure it posts before installing. Is this something you would recommend? I will have an igpu on the cpu.

      @NerdSidekick Well, I appreciate the response! Since this will be my first PC build, I have downloaded your video and have watched it three times already, lol. I think I will secure the motherboard in the case with standoffs and test it that way before cable management. Just to be on the safe side, I will connect the front panel header. I believe the case I'm getting has all the front panel connections in one standard connection, so that makes things easier. I really can't wait to build it.
